It's seems like these 2 bands engender some of the most passionate fans of the past couple of years. I like Tool, but am not a Radiohead fan. Last year for Radiohead, I bought all of the albums and listened to them prior to the show. I felt like I was "supposed" to like Radiohead and did what I could to get them a shot. I just couldn't feel it. I went to the show, sort of enjoyed it, and then went out into the Broo night.
This year, I'm ecstatic to see Tool. They fit me. However, just as I don't feel Radiohead, thousands of Roo'ers won't feel Tool. Sometimes, we should just accept what we like and don't like, see what we want to see and then don't bother with what is expected to be cool. I guess my point is - if you don't like Tool because you don't like their style of music, don't expect to love them after the show. Don't try to force your musical tasted like I did last year.

^^^^^^^^^^ I know what you mean. I've been doing the same thing with a lot of the jambands that play roo frequently. I just can't do it, and last year at Phil and Friends I just resigned myself to the fact that jam bands just don't thrill me. The beaury of Bonnaroo is there's always something else to do. even during the headliners there's stuff going on in Centeroo.

I love them all and am just happy that AC & Superfly are smart enough to realize there is a place for them all at one festival. As for Tool vs. Radiohead, for me there is no contest. I am a huge Tool fan, but also a huge jamband fan. I didn't even see Radiohead last year, I stayed at my campsite. Tool at Roo is going to be the highlight of my year ;D

i definately prefer radiohead, probably my favorite band of all time. i've listened to tool a lot and like them but i'm not crazy about them. however i can't wait to see them live, i really think they will blow me away. i'm not especially looking forward to the police or widespread panic tho most of the stuff i really wanna see happens after the headlines
radiohead all the way, i don't think you can even compare the two. some of my friends are into tool and its just not for me, i will be getting the best spot ever at the superjam during tool. i am glad that they spread the love around though. Looking forward to see whats to come.
I didn't even see Radiohead last year, I stayed at my campsite.
That's just about the most horrible thing I've ever heard!!!
I'd probably give a toe or two for RH too. I've never seen them and they never come around my area.
I've never listened to Tool. I remember in high school (wow they've been around a while) I was both fascinated and creeped out by the video for Sober. That's pretty much the only thing I've heard, so I'm looking forward to seeing them.
I would have actually given a toe, ala Big Lebowski, to have seen Radiohead live.
I am also however an enormous Tool fan.
So I'm happy both ways. ;D ;D
best... show..... ever...
Still, even though im not crazy about some bands playing, including tool, im still gonna check them all out because a live show can be completely different.
seriously words can not describe radiohead's show last year...none I will be seeing tool just because I like all sorts of different music. But I never really listen to them much. I won't just skip them though because that's no fun.

you know....I feel the exact same way about radiohead. Everyone I know (that I consider to have good taste in music) is crazy about Radiohead. I feel like I was SUPPOSED to like them, but when I get down to it, I just can't get into them. I wish I could....but I just don't.
On the other hand, I absolutely love Tool, and will try to be as close as possible for their set at Bonnaroo.
I always liked a few Radiohead songs but wasn't really a die-hard fan - then I saw them at Bonnaroo last year. Now I'm a fan for life. I'm expecting to have a similar experience this year.
Good live music is good live music, regardless of genre. If I go in with an open mind, I'm rarely disappointed.
I'll admit, I can understand why some folks like tool...they just aren't my kinda tunes. Luckily, there are always a million things to do at Roo...like get ready for a SUPERB late night on Friday.
Let me add, I think a lot of this stereotyping of "tool fans" is pretty silly. We're all Bonnaroo people. It's always a good time.

I was really excited to see Radiohead and they just put me to sleep... so I went and camped out for the Superjam which was the best decision of my life. I doubt Tool will put me to sleep but I still want to see the Superjam up close so Ill play it by ear.
I have to see tool this year actually for one reason. A friend of mine passed away last summer in a car crash. But being friends with him turned me on to tool.

I feel sorry for you my friend. You missed a good one!
I regret not going now. But we went back to rest (we were camped on the outskirts) and just never got the energy together to go back to Centeroo. I won't make that mistake again!
I've never really been a Tool fan...but....I saw them at Lollapalooza 97...and Ozzfest 98....and they are amazing live...I'd recommend checking them out even if you're not into their cds.
In the taking my own advice category...I'm not into Panic...I tried...but it just doesn't move me...however...I have every intention of checking them out and I'm hoping it hits me different when it's live.
I was not the biggest Radiohead fan going into last year's set and sad to say I really wasn't that into it. It was pretty boring in my opinion. Especially since the night before, we were up and dancing and singing along to every Tom Petty song that he played. I was looking for a little more energy in the Saturday night mainstage set. Plus, when the screens went black, it kinda sucked to feel like there was a concert going on 10 miles away (we were in the back of the main stage) and not be able to see a thing. The screens are on the main stage for a reason. The fact that they weren't utilized kinda sucked.
It might have been a little better if Radiohead was Friday night and Petty was Saturday night. Whatever though, that's just me.
Anyway, Tool is great live but I worry that they might have some of the exact same problems that I just mentioned. To the casual fan, singing every Police song is going to be a lot more fun than hearing Tool play a 2 hour plus set with just a handful of tunes. They are like an alternative jam band of sorts, if such a thing exists. Also, they are big on the visuals. It might be great to use the screens for that in a festival setting, but it also might feel weird to see some visuals, hear some songs, but not be able to see the band at all.
I have listened to Tool for a long time and love Radiohead, although I've only turned on to them until the last few years.
In 2005 I was totally psyched to see Allman Brothers. But then I realized something. I was bored. I felt horrible for feeling that way, but we ended up wandering away (it was crowded anyhow).
I think a big part of roo is deciding on the moment. So while I'll have my schedule with me, if something isn't tripping my fligger, I'll check something else out. I've realized that I've gotta not feel dedicated to any one band or else tarnish the experience. But everything really deserves a shot. If you are totally ruling out a headliner based on prior judgements and not even trying it, that really could be a travesty.
Whoever said "don't knock it till you try it" was a pretty smart dude. And if you still don't like it, at least you tried.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

I came out of the Radiohead crowd last year and found my buddy who always stays at the back. He asked, "what did you think?" I said, "best . . . show . . . ever." Had to reply.
I do feel for the non-Radiohead fans who stayed back and then were treated to the big screen malfunctions. In my opinion, the music is the thing, but being "in on" the performance is an important part.
Edit: Oh yeah, I'm not as big a Tool fan--I bought Opiate in high school and haven't listened other than on the radio since--but I'm stoked!
