Which bands did you get to see and a small summary of your thoughts:
Full Sets: Tool - What can I say - just mind blowing - I had the hugest grin on my face the whole show ;D Gogol Bordello - So much fun - not normally something I would listen to, but an amazing live show. Damien Rice - A little disappointing but still great - I think maybe he comes across better on an indoor stage. The Flaming Lips - WOW!! First time seeing them and I had a blast. JBT - Again WOW! First time seeing them also and they were even better than I expected. White Stripes - Not mind blowing but again a great show.
Partial Sets: Cold War Kids - They were ok..... Gillian Welch with John Paul Jones as guest - I just happened by the stage and stayed, I really liked her. Michael Franti - Great show The Black Keys - They were ok. Michael Franti at the Sonic Stage - He totally rocked acoustic, very enjoyable Tea Leaf Green at the Sonic Stage - They were pretty good. Superjam - What I saw was good. SCI - Didn't stay long but I saw was good. Dr. Dog - Great live show but was not familiar with their music. Ben Harper - Awesome awesome show - wish I had stayed for the whole thing Franz Ferdinand - They were ok The Police - Very disappointing, we stayed for about 5 songs and left to wait for the Lips... Wolfmother - Awesome live band but it was too damn hot and I needed shade Rocca DeLuca - I really enjoyed him plus it was nice to see someone in such a small setting. Martha Wainwright - She was ok. The Decemberists - Pretty cool - not what I was expecting WP - As always a great live show but just not my cup of tea anymore.
Full Sets: Tool. Awesome show, maynard was very talkative. Kinda disapointed in the set length, but they made up for that by not taking a set break and bringing out morello. The National. Not my cup of tea. Was there waiting for Rod y Gab. Ziggy Marley. Watched from the blue room. Pretty good. Harper and the IC's. Bomb ass show! Loved it. Not someone i listen to too awful much, but i'm a fan now. Police. The most fun i've ever had while not paying attention to a show. I was dressed as the burger king guy, since the mascarade ball was cancelled. The people and comments were hillarious. The White Stripes. WOW! All my friends are big fans, and had all seen them live. I was trying really hard to get into their studio stuff, but I had always seen them as kind of the anti tool, not that thats a bad thing mind you, I just thought it was a bit simple, i guess. I think I now get it. Its been a long time since i've seen such a terrible singer (sorry, but he is) sing with enough passion to make it sound great. He can wail on the guitar too. Loved how they both seemed to feed off of the crowd.
Partial Sets: Rodrigo y gabriella - WOW! Its one thing to hear that on a cd, but to see it live, nuts. I loved the crowd interation. Thursday was a long day so we bailed early since it was all we could do to stay awake. Mute Math - looked cool what little i saw, left to get a space for Rod y gab. Should have stayed instead of the national. The nightwatchman. This one hurts my heart. I love morello, but just cant get into this. Stayed there long enough to make sure zach wasnt coming out, then went to spearhead. Spearhead. Friggan awesome. Totally hyped up. Tons of fun. The Roots. Awesome! My wife couldnt stop dancing, but i was in conserve energy for tool mode. The Black keys. Indifferent on these guys. In hindsight, probably wouldnt have left the roots for these guys. Regina Spektor or however you spell it. Not my cup of tea. The Flaming Lips. Saw War pigs, rocked out. Didnt stay for the actual show, was tired of fighting crowds by this point in the day. Probably my biggest roo regret. Wilco. Not my cup of tea again.
"When I was 4 years old, they tried to test my IQ. They showed me a picture of three oranges and a pear. They asked me which one is different, and does not belong. They taught me different....is wrong." -- Ani Difranco
The Black Angels - good, psychedelic vibe The National - They were aight Rodrigo y Gabriela - fantastic, incredible guitar skillz. couldn't wait to see them live, I got their CD a few months ago.
Cold War Kids - I enjoyed the two songs I knew Kings of Leon - I enjoyed this as well The Roots - FANTASTIC, i got in the little front area so i was mad close Masters of War and Roxanne were incredible. truth be told I enjoyed this Roxanne more than the Police's, it was far more energetic. Tool- I enjoyed the songs I know, Schism and Lateralus, but it did get a little repetitive, perhaps because I do not listen to them much. Superjam- fucking incredible, Zeppelin is my favorite band of all time and this was great
Dr. Dog - this was my second time seeing them, but I liked the first one better, and that was in an indoor 1300 person venue, so maybe that has something to do with it. Regina Spektor - incredible, I <3 her. Warren Haynes acoustic - i was sitting in a nearby tent, but once i heard the music, i stood up for that song and then after that song he was done, did i just not realize he was playing until he was almost done? or did he only play one song? Fountains of Wayne - I saw these guys to get close for ween, and they provided a pleasantly suprising good time. Ween - grrrrrreat, Deaner is amazing. def one of the top 5 shows for me. The Police - Very disappointing, got there late and left early to get a FLips spot. Roxanne's chorus had no fucking energy. The Flaming Lips - incredible, probably the best show of the weekend. do you realize?? was epic and *nearly* brought a tear to my eye. I saw a few gov't mule songs before stumbling back to the tent in the freezing cold.
and on sunday, my entire day was devoted to getting as close as possible for the white stripes and wolfmother, which was accomplished Pete Yorn - I have never heard anything by him but he seemed decent. Wolfmother - incredible, joker and the thief was fantastic. wish they'da played communication breakdown though. Decemberists - havent heard most of their stuff either but i enjoyed the show. White Stripes - I loved it, incredible, mindblowing. although that may have to do with the fact that i had waited all day for this and was very close to the front.
Lewis Black and Friends Dave Attell and Dov Davidoff Sam Roberts Band - I was there to get close for the National The National - Had some serious soundcheck issues, rocking set, loved it. Rodrigo Y Gabriela - Front row center, perhaps my favorite set of the weekend. Cold War Kids - Chilled in the shade, wasn't overly impressed. Manu Chao - So much energy, and so much fun, loved it. Superjam - Blew my mind, major highlight of the weekend, John Paul proves he is a legend. Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminal - So much fun, loved seeing JPJ again, DAzed and Confused baby! The Police - Was already up close for Ben so stayed. Wish I knew more of their stuff, thought they sounded great, wished they had played longer. John Butler Trio - Great time, had fun. The Decemberists - One of my favorites, loved the Tain, loved Mavis Staples. The White Stripes - Great show, just rocked my face socks off.
Partial sets:
Hot Chip - They really grew on me as their set progressed. Xavier Rudd - Such a great person to see live The Hold Steady - Just ok. Damien Rice - I would've preferred a more intimate setting, especially with the Fountains of Wayne's sound pouring out from next door. Galactic - Rocking Sasha and Digweed - Fantastic, loved the beats, got tired and had to leave Wilco - Caught the last half of the show, good times.

Damn I didn't know JPJ played with Ben Harper. I think leaving both of those shows early are my biggest regrets.

Alright -
Full Sets: Yard Dogs Road Show - crazy entertaining, we didn't know what to expect sitting down, but we were totally entertained Gillian Welch - one of my favs, so I'm biased, but this was a great show Manu Chao - exactly what I expected, very high energy it pulled us out of our mid-day funk Tool - yep, it was great Superjam - I didn't expect as much 'jamming' from Ben, but it was awesome, good setlist, good energy Gogol Bordello - on my must see list from day one, they did not disappoint, again great energy Ween - not the best ween set I've ever seen, a little uneven at first, but the Frank was nice as was Fat Lenny Police - just what I expected pretty much John Butler Trio - had heard a few songs going in, I'm a fan now, great show Wolfmother - the first time I heard these guys this was the exact setting that I had in mind - crazy hot, loud rocking band, audience going nuts - good stuff Wilco - seen these guys waaayy too many times, good set, but being an old fart I'm always hoping for some really old chestnuts.
Partial sets: Black Angels - good show, good way to start the weekend Richard Thompson - a little better than I expected, nice to finally see this guy live Nightwatchman - I really enjoy rage, I like what Tom is doing, but he's a little preachy - still what we saw of this show was pretty cool - and you can't knock an acoustic Guerilla Radio Cold War Kids - good rocking stuff, not overwhelming, but good Railroad Earth - almost didn't go to this set, glad we did, they were great Old Crow Medicine Show - was it just me or was the sound pretty bad for these guys, we could hardly hear for the 2-3 songs we stayed for. Ziggy - enjoyed this way more than I thought I would Gov't Mule - only caught then 2nd set but it was good stuff, the mule delivered Galactic - left mule after the Sabbath encore and caught the last 2-3 songs of Galactic - made me wish I had skipped mule Ratdog - haven't seen them since 96ish, did not expect to enjoy them nearly as much as I did White Stripes - pretty much what I expected, like the albums, I enjoy it at first, but after a while it all starts to sound the same.
Dr. Dog @ the VIP Preparty. - Pretty good. Cold War Kids - just the first few songs, then the heat made me lose interest and we wandered off for some mid day shade. It was just too packed for that show. Brazilian Girls - have to be honest, just kinda wandered in to this one after hearing it from afar. Very good. A new discovery for me. Paulo Nutini - Because we were so wrapped up in BG, I caught the last 4 or 5 songs, including his cover of "I want to be like you" and "Jenny Don't Be Hasty." This kid can perform, and what I saw was great. I love his voice. Kings of Leon I was slacking and watched some of this from the comfort of the VIP tent, eating free food. they lost power or something in the middle of the set and that ruined their rhythm for a bit. Still pretty good. The Roots - This was not the flavor for me that day. But any hip hop band with a tuba gets some cred. Watched a few songs and headed over to Manu Chao - very fun, saw most of the set, headed back to the camp to prepare for TOOL - Absolutely mindblowing. A great mix of songs from the albums. And Tom Morello? That's the Morello I adore...very good. I nearly lost my mind for Aenema, I enjoyed most of the set from mid crowd on the ground. It was the perfect song to end the Bonnaroo set. And fricking amazing. I need to check the shots I got of the laser show. This lived up and exceeded every expectation I had. I have to see them at a smaller venue now, it's just too delicious. After this, we felt like no late night act could possibly top that, so I walked my blistered pinky toes back to camp and slept very well.
Regina Spektor I watched the first few songs and decided it was too hot to listen to something so downtempo from the VIP bleachers, although it was cute she was so excited. A full crowd IMO. We kept hearing something really loud behind us and were drawn to it. Gogol Bordello - Holy effing crap this blew us away. I loved it. My boyfriend got in touch with his gypsy roots and it was definitely some rock and roll. They know how to work a crowd. This is another discovery, definitely going to check this one out at a smaller venue as well. Damien Rice I really really missed Lisa on vocals. Still a good show, but definitely HOT. Franz FerdinandWe got close for this one. Great show, played a lot of uptempo stuff, but seemed to have some technical issues with a squelchy mic that threw off what might have been their planned set, but they persevered and didn't let it throw them off too much The Police - I still don't know how I feel about this one. I am glad to have been able to see them, but I didn't find a groove. It was kind of flat. And Sting was expecting people to sing along with songs I really had never heard or known. And then he jammed out on Roxanne and that was the ONE song I had my fingers crossed that they'd do straight forward. They finished ahead of schedule and there was no encore, which I felt was extremely tacky, mainly for the sake that this is supposed to be a special event for them.
John Butler Trio - quite amazing on guitar. a good start to the day. Wolfmother I thought this set was quite excellent. They ripped it up quite well, and the crowd was packed. They did not disappoint. Definitely building up a following. WilcoI didn't catch the whole set but a good part of it. Very good. White Stripes This was a great set, seemed like they did some different things and cut it short as to not overlap with WP. Jack tunes his guitar between most songs without a huge lull, and things always sound good. I've never seen the which stage so packed, it was standing room only for way back. They could have easily played the main stage. Perhaps not headlining, but it would have been nice to have the big tv's. which stage was too small for the crowd. I think Superfly was kind of testing them out or something, or they missed the boat and didn't realize the crowd they'd attract.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

I wondered about that choice also. They could have and should have been on the main stage, maybe next time!

Or at the very least maybe it's time to add at least 1 screen to the Which stage. I know the crowd at which stage was overflowing for at least the Stripes & Lips (probably sci too I'm sure) - even 1 screen would have added a lot to those scenarios.

Okay, time for mine!
Thursday was mainly focused on seeing David Cross...a lot of fun and totally worth it!
Full sets: -Tortoise - Wow. I really didn't think I would like them based on what I had heard, but got there and they just totally blew me away. Plus I LOVED the xylophone and the vibraphone, I used to play those so it was a real treat for me -The Roots - SO MUCH FUN! I danced the whole time, the sousaphone was amazing...plus I loved the covers of rap songs they played -Hot Tuna - I don't generally get into jamming much, but this was a lot of fun. I danced a lot at this show as well. -The Police - I really really enjoyed it. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I heard pretty much everything I wanted to hear, and I really liked that they tried to mix it up and play a little bit differently. I was a little dissapointed with the lack of an encore and no Don't Stand So Close To Me - Mavis Staples - MY FAVORITE SHOW. She brought the house DOWN. It was a huge dance party the entire time. Plus she played The Wait, which was amazing. I cannot wait to see her at Bonnaroo again next year (she said she'd be back) -Wilco - very enjoyable. Exactly what I expected. I would've liked to have heard What Light though
Partial Sets: - Gillian Welch - sitting in the rain listening to her was amazing. I am seriously bummed about missing JPJ though! -Kings of Leon - I liked it, high energy, sad their power went out though. It made a lot of people leave early -Superjam - I LOVED it, I am a huge Zeppelin fan, but I just couldn't stay any longer...I was exhausted - Old Crow Medicine Show - couldn't hear it well, but it seemed fun -Ween - eh. Not my cup of tea, but I know the show was awesome for Ween fans -The Hold Steady - I have seen them before, and they sounded better this time. -Spoon - good, from what I heard - The Flaming Lips - AMAZING, I really enjoyed it, it was total sensory overload, but I was tired so I left early...
full sets ;D: mute math - rocked CLUTCH!!!! - just awesome!! we were right up front at the mosh pit, its was great, one of the best shows i saw. michael franti & spearhead - great show, jumped the whole time. manu chao -AWESOME!!! tool - not a big tool fan. i could've taken a nap if i would have had room. dr. dog - never listened to 'em before, but it was a pretty solid performance. gogol bordello - just started listening a couple of weeks before roo and they were really awesome live. fountains of wayne - no comment. the police - great show, but disappointed with the length. GOV'T MULE!!!!!! - the REAL superjam, definitely my favorite show of bonnaroo, it was UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!! john butler trio - good, as always.
partial sets: rod y gab - sounded great, only stayed for a couple of songs after clutch i was too tired. cold war kids - pretty much disappointed, and it was really hot. superjam - was it really a 'superjam'? i think not. keller williams (WMD'S) - i prefer keller solo. ben harper - good, especially the last couple of songs.
all in all, a great bonnaroo for me. My number one show, GOV'T MULE, very close number 2...CLUTCH.

Full Sets:
Friday
Lewis Black- I guess this counts, it started the festival off for me The Black Angels- Decent show, nothing special Mute Math- Really, really cool show. One of my top 5 overall. Their lead singer was amazing....and before I saw them I had no idea what kind of music they played, how good they were, etc.
Saturday
The Little Ones- This show was at the Sonic Stage, pretty good show Uncle Earl- Not my kind of music, but still a pretty good show. John Paul Jones played some with the band, since he produced their album. I was in the front row, so JPJ was about 20 feet away from me the whole show. Richard Thompson- GREAT show, definitely in my top 5 overall. Had a spot in the front row for this one, got some really good pics (which I will post later). The Nightwatchman- I got a great spot for his set, right in the center of the stage, about 7/8 rows of people back. His show was fantastic, without a doubt top 5 overall. He really enjoyed the crowd (promised to return to Bonnaroo, said we were the best crowd he has ever played for, etc.) and we enjoyed him. It was so awesome to see Tom Morello in person. The Black Keys- A bunch of people left after Tom, so I ended up getting a spot about two rows back, center of the stage. I was pretty much exhausted by the time their set rolled around (since I had been to 4 shows previous to it, and hadn't set down once) but it was a nice show. I liked how the closed the set with 'Till I Get My Way.
Saturday
Jonah Smith- After being disappointed by Dr. Dog and the Slip, I caught his set at the Sonic Stage. Good time filler. Ziggy Marley- Great show, another top 5 show. His set list was perfect, and his performance was high energy. After his show I got to meet him/got a cd signed. Awesome. The Police- Quite possibly the most disappointing show all weekend. Everyone I talked to felt the same way as well. What was up with the jam version of Roxanne? I hated it. After Roxanne, their show got exponentially better until they stopped playing so early.
Sunday
Mavis Staples- I was right front and center for this show. Amazing show, the crowd LOVED her, and she was giving the love back. Good stuff. T-Bone Burnett- Another huge disappointment. His set list was terrible, he didn't play any of his great old stuff. It was all his new material, which seriously pales in comparison with his older stuff. Sort of a painful set to endure. The White Stripes- I had felt really bad the whole day (sore throat, sinus drainage), and I was pretty much feeling like crap by the time The Decemberists took the Which Stage. I thought, there is no way I can get a good spot for the Stripes, I will just sit back here for the Decenmberists, and I will just have a terrible spot for the Stripes. Then, after a few minutes I sort of got my second wind, and I walked through everyone that was sitting down and whatnot and the Decemberists (I didn't push anyone out of the way or anything, I made my way to the front politely. So by the end of their show I had a great spot sitting against the spot where the video and stuff for the show was set up. So I got some rest before TWS set, which was an hour and twenty minutes after the Decemberists. Even though I had felt bad, after the Stripes took the stage, I was rocking out. They put on a great performance, and the set list was great as well. I loved the songs off the new album, especially A Martyr for My Love for You. Amazing show, the perfect close to Bonnaroo for me.
Half Sets
Franz Ferdinand- Well I was planning on watching Ben Harper, but after Ziggy's show, and after meeting him, I was so excited that I just walked in circles for about thirty minutes, before deciding to check out Franz Ferdinand for a little bit (since I was near the Troo Music Lounge). They weren't too bad, a good time filler. Paolo Nuntini- After Richard Thompson, I hurried over to That Tent to try and get a good spot for the Nightwatchman. I ended up getting there pretty early, and did not get a chance to set down. Basically, I stood up for 5 and a half shows straight. The Flaming Lips- I'll be honest, all I wanted to see was the UFO spaceship. IT was pretty much incredible, I stayed for a while and then caught a few Gov't Mule songs (not enough to count as half a set). Dubconcious- Left early because I had a huge headache/was really tired Partial Sets (Only caught a few songs)

Full Sets:
The National - Great thursday act, lot of energy Dave Barnes - Amazing, really funny guy with tons of personality Tool - Best show of the weekend, can't say enough Annuals - have a helluva guitarist Spoon - pretty solid, not amazing The Police - rather short set, but still a great show Pete Yorn - never heard him before this weekend, that will change Wolfmother - he used 6 guitars, and he looks like a wolf... Wilco - great ending to the weekend
Partial Shows Mute Math - amazing way to start The Whigs - not too shabby Cold War Kids - big disappointment Kings of Leon - didn't pay much attention, since we saw them 2 days before hand Nightwatchman - not a huge tom morello fan String Cheese - alright Dr. Dog - not terrible, not great the Slip - big surprise, very good the Hold Steady - very good, but gosh, they seem old Ziggy Marley - classic ragae Ben Harper - not too bad The Flaming Lips - amazing show, but so tired had to head home early the Decemberists - not as good as i was expecting
helluva weekend, tiring, dirty, but an unforgetable experience for my first time

Thursday: Mute Math : not the entire show but what i did see of it was good Rod&Gab: almost the entire show, one of the highlights for me, wish you were here, was amazing Tea Leaf Green: just a few fun filled minutes Friday: Cold War Kids: I saw pretty much the entire show, I got up to go to the merch tent and when i did- i almost passed out from the heat - i had to go back to the RV for like 3 hours to chill out - so i missed ALOT of music during the day, but im thankful cuz i was able to be up super late that evening Manu Chao: this was a fun, upbeat show - i loved it The Roots: caught about 45 min of it - was good from what i saw Tool: blew me away - I loved manyards sarcastic remarks STS9: I dont know why, but i wasnt feeling it - maybe cuz i was too far back and the sound wasnt great Superjam: the sound was also not great cuz i was too far back, but i enjoyed it Saturday: Old Crow Medicine Show: fun times ;D The WIld Magnolias Mardi Gras INdians: they brought the funk Ziggy Marley: i caught about half of his set, went back to my RV to change and prepare for the evening Ben Harper: OMG he was so good. .. JPJ and dazed and confused was great, his entire set was amazing, def one of my faves of the weekend The Police: eh. Im happy I saw them, but it was kinda a let down. Sting bugged me. The FLips :OMG the crowd was INSANE. i couldnt believe how packed it was. We were way too far back, decided to leave after 4 songs to chill and catch the rest of Girl Talk, and see Sasha and Digweed - where i danced til sunrise and then passed out under a tree in centeroo - which was a roo first for me, but a memorable experience ;D
I left Sunday Morning - was sposed to stay til monday but im really glad i left, i missed the stripes and few other bands but all and all im happy i left. I think i got my $'s worth

here is a review i made up:
Bonnaroo this year was a very mixed bag in terms of the overall experience - on the bad side, an intense drought caused lung-collapsing dust storms (i inhaled so much of it as to miss The Police when I passed out in my tent unexpectedly), the festival food was pretty bad yet pricey, and yeah, there were a lot of hippies. On the bright side, I saw some fantastic performances that will linger in my mind for a while.
Here is a top 5 ranking of my favorite shows:
1. The Hold Steady Okay, so I was three rows back, dead center, within reach of Craig Finn, and he threw his cold Budweiser on me. It was awesome - right as the band came out, the whole That Tent went APESHIT, and the band (who are some of the coolest looking motherfuckers EVER) had shit eating grins on their faces. Finn kept thanking the crowd and dancing, and generally having the time of his life. I really can't describe how great of an energy there was. They even played a request (of a song I didn't know, but which was still awesome), and played beach volleyball across the small pit in front of the stage. This was the best show I've ever seen, hands down.
2. Tool No surprise here - Tool were wonderful. Their light show surpassed all my expectations, and their sound was incredibly immense - the guitar rattled my ribcage, and the bass drum sounded like a gunshot straight to my heart. I was almost in the pit, in front of the soundstage on the right, so I could see Maynard's shadowy figure dancing to creepily. It was a really surreal thing to see. Maynard was very funny with his stage banter - "So, uh... I guess you're all high on the marijuana, huh?" *crowd cheers* "Or maybe, the LSD, huh?" *more cheers* "You're all under arrest!" *laughter*
3. Tortoise I had dabbled with this band previously, but their live set blew me away. It was very special, because the band said almost nothing the whole time besides a thank you at the end. Some songs had two drummers, and they actually made excellent use of this instead of it becoming a gimmick. This was the first set I saw that made me thankful for having come to Bonnaroo. Their krautrock-esque post rock was dancable and epic at the same time. The crowd gave rapturous applause throughout their set, and even called them out for an encore, which is pretty mind boggling considering it was in a tent in a busy time slot at a festival.
4. El-P I didn't know hip hop shows could be so great until I saw this one (Aesop Rock played before him, and was almost as good, by the way. I just chose El Producto because his stage show is much more appealing). His band came out wearing camo, the lights went dark (revealing the creepy red I'll Sleep When You're Dead album art) and the DJ started playing Gary Jules' "Mad World" cover (from Donnie Darko, you might remember), after which El-P blasted into a tight, lightning fast set including the songs "Tasmanian Pain Coaster", "The Overly Dramatic Truth", and "Poisenville Kids No Wins". At one point, he got the crowd jumping like crazy, which sent a smothering dust cloud into the air. It was painful to breathe, but I wished he would have played longer.
5. Wilco Wilco is a very subtle band, and so is their live show. They started off with some cuts from Sky Blue Sky and eventually got more and more rocking, climaxing with a SPINECRUSHING "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" from A Ghost is Born. The crowd wasn't too sure about the band at the start, but slowly but surely came to their side. Halfway through, Jeff Tweedy got more friendly after being silent, asking the crowd how they were doing. He also pointed out how awesome it was that a guy was holding his crutches up and fist pumping at a rock show. The band were supposed to be done after "Spiders (Kidsmoke)", but the crowd cheered them to an encore of "The Late Greats" and "Heavy Metal Drummer".
Other full sets I saw: The National - They put on a pretty good show, though a lot of their songs were extremely similiar to one another. The Roots - They were pretty great, just missing my top 5. They did a great cover of Bob Dylan's "Masters of War". This is a great group to see live. Aesop Rock - Like I said, he was really good, but his show was bare bones - him, his DJ, and Rob Sonic kept the rhythm going pretty well. This was a pretty hoppin party, actually. The Slip - pretty decent band. They had some fairly good jams during their set, and the crowd really liked them. Annuals - i was up front for them to get a spot for the Hold Steady, and it was worth it - but my god, this band fucking sucked. Its like emo music from Pitchfork or something. The Flaming Lips - I was really dissapointed with the Flaming Lips. It saddens me to say that, because they are one of my favorite bands. Their show was good and all, but they played under-tempo, Wayne babbled about politics about half the set time (they only played like ten songs in two hours), and the crowd was absolutely dead (this was at midnight on the third day). The best part was their impromptu 10:30 pm soundcheck of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" - it was awesome. I think it was just unfortunate that everyone was burnt out. I'd go see these guys at a show in a smaller venue and it would probably be the best show ever. Wolfmother - I was SO FUCKING HOT. I just sat and listened. Pretty average Led Zeppelin ripoff band, nothing too offensive though.
Partial sets I saw: The Black Angels - Very run-of-the-mill stoner rock. It sounded like Kyuss, only really boring. The New Orelans Klezmer Allstars - one of the surprises of Bonnaroo. They played a jazz-jewish-fusion or something, and everyone was dancing their asses off. One of the most memorable moments of Bonnaroo occured here, when they told us to join hands and do a sort of ring-around-the-rosie jig (all thousand of us or whatever). I grabbed a girls hand and found out she was wearing a cast on it - OWNED! Hot Chip - I expected a bit more party out of these guys. They were okay, but the singer was laughable, and there are much, MUCH better dance bands - see LCD Soundsystem. Dr. Dog - a pretty average jam band (a genre which I always try to avoid) that put on an above-average show. This was a nice was to get out of the heat at least and still have a good time.
Thats it! It was the best of times, and the worst of times. Dust-induced asthma attacks, epic lightshows, nasty Italian sausages, Craig Finn's beer in my face, dirty hippies, and some straight up post-rocking. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go cough up dust and blood for about an hour.
Cold War Kids: some songs were amazing, others were so-so.
The Roots: INCREDIBLE. i was blown away. i wasn't expecting it to be that good. definitely in my top 5.
Tool: very, very good. i don't like them now as much as i used to, but i still thoroughly enjoyed it. Tom's solo was amazing, and it made the set that much better.
Dr. Dog: decent, if a little boring.
Fountains of Wayne: terrible. i was just there to get a good spot for ween.
Ween: AMAZING. definitely top 5. Dean is a beast, and they played a great setlist. i was front row. i also saw Jim Jarmusch & Lewis Black off to the side watching, which was cool.
The Flaming Lips: once again just awesome. it was my second time seeing them, but my first with the spaceship. the show was amazing, obviously, and the setlist was great. obviously top 5.
Wolfmother: the same as last time i saw them, good for a little bit, then really boring after a while.
The Decemberisits: great set. the song with Mavis was awesome.
The White Stripes: mind-blowing. top 5 for sure. i'm so glad i finally saw them. it was everything i hoped for and more.
PARTIAL SETS:
The Black Angels: eh.
Kings of Leon: i was excited about their set, but they were really boring.
Annuals: better than i expected.
The Nightwatchman: Tom should stick to electric.
Superjam: really cool, JPJ sounded great.
El-P: pretty good.
DJ Shadow: very good, but i was incredibly tired and headed back a couple songs into it. i reget that now.
Regina Spektor: decent, but i was really hot and wasn't in the mood for that style.
The Police: pretty much what i was expecting. not mind-blowing, but just enough not to be boring. i left after like 6 songs to get a spot for the flaming lips.
Stanton Moore Trio-Robert Walter tore up it. Lets just leave it at that. James Blood Ulmer-Didn't know what to expect and left the set very happy. Black Keys-Probably the most energectic set at Bonnaroo. That Tent was a mad house for this set Railroad Earth-Really good Hot Tuna-Better than expected Xavier Rudd-Heard this guy's music the day before his set and had to see him and was not dissapointed. T-Bone Burnett-Great set and real happy he played alot of material from his last album and his new album coming in January. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys-Very good set
Partial Sets Tool-Left early to get a spot for SuperJam, but the half of the set I did see was mind-blowing. SuperJam-Left the set an hour and a half in, but the was blown away by JPJ's awesomeness. The Police-Very good, enjoyed it alot. The Flaming Lips-Unbelieveable is all I got to say. Ornette Coleman-This was partial only because of unfortunate circumstances. Get well Ornette. The 45 mins he did play was the best set I saw the entire time at Bonnaroo. North Mississippi All-Stars-Very good set Mavis Staples-Really good set
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
The Flaming Lips! Holy CRAP, The Flaming Lips! I had always been aware of them and their music, but never got the chance to see them live. Color me converted.
Somebody graffiti'd "WAYNE COYNE 2008" on the wall near the arch. Very fitting.
Was anyone else sitting near the jerk at the very top of the VIP bleachers who heckled Wayne just about every time he talked in between songs? THAT was annoying.
I didn't catch many full complete sets, other than headliners... Just too much going on, too much to see. Uncle Earl w/ John Paul Jones was great, Lily Allen was a lot of fun. Clutch rocked my face off. Mute Math was killer. Tool are just too disgustingly good. Tom Morello was a nice highlight to the Tool set (Tom Morello and Adam Jones went to high school together).
Michael Franti was great. It's nice to see he's not quite as angry as he was during his Disposable Heroes days.
Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys were a lot of fun.
What else... Can't even think of it all right now. Way too much to process. This was our first and definitely not our last Bonaroooooooo!
I wondered about that choice also. They could have and should have been on the main stage, maybe next time!
I agree... I think Wilco was playing the main stage at the time.... ?? A swap there would be a no brainer, in my opinion...
We caught:
Full Sets:
Tool- I think I am still in shock.... I wonder if all the "Anti Tool" folks still feel the same way? Best show,.... Hands down
Clutch-I am pretty sure that we started the first pit at 'ROO... !!!! They were excellent... My fiancee lost both her shoes and a contact, but you should see the other guy! LoL...
Ziggy Marley- OMFG!!! We were up close and danced our asses off.... He was FAR better than I thought he would be, and I had pretty high expectations....
Ben Harper- BURN ONE DOWN!!!.... What about THAT cloud.!!?? Awesome set. The guy is amazing. "Gold to me" was the highlight of the set for me because I gotta long sloppy kiss...
The White Stripes- Awesome set list... They should have given up the main stage for them... Jack went OFF... He did miss his pedal once... It looked like he got pretty pissed... Being a huge fan, I was overall very happy with the show...
Franti and Spearhead - Excellent! We all had a great time.... They met my expectations. (I'm glad they did the "What I got" cover) _________________________________________
Partials: R Y G - Awesome! We were just beat by the heat and needed to chill...
Wilco - No comment... LoL... I don't want to offend anyone... But the "mud guy" in the mist tent was funny as hell...
Galactic- They sounded excellent... Very hype... I think I am going to buy some of their stuff as soon as we aren't broke from 'roo
Regina Spektor - My fiancee loves her... I really don't dig her all that much...
Lily Allen - We were at the fountain... From what I heard, I think she sounded great...
Super Jam - Wrong stage guys!!!!! We could not hear or see, so we left...
I'm sure we caught a few more partial acts, but nothing that stands out... I am still trying to get my mind back together...
TOOL: Long time tool fan, and it was my first time ever seeing them. AWESOME-O!!!! STS9: Saw this directly after tool and in the right mindset.... AWESOME-O!!!! I also had no idea who these guys were besides that they made some kind of electronic music... WOW... I didn't realize it was a RAVE lol. This might have been my favorite show of the entire festival because I was SOOOOO suprised by what came out of the speakers. The naked short girl was pretty hot to, so yah... this set owned The Black Angels: GREAT warm-up for what the rest of the festival was going to offer. Cold War Kids: GREAT warm-up for the rest of Friday's shows, it really put me in the right mind to endure one of the best Fridays of my life! The Roots: Supplied me with some great showmanship and entertainment before my favorite band (TOOL). The part where they did the spoofs on beats of club rap, and then intermission song by the guitarist was AWESOME. Especially when he started running around in the buffer zone while playing the electric (w/ wireless amp adapter") The Police: Wasn't the best show, but it was like when your really drunk in the bar (which i was drunk ) and someone plays The Police on the jukebox and you sing to every song and make out... well yah. Wolfmother: They totally suprised me and I might say they were better than the white stripes, but the stripes still win Junior "MOTHER F***in" Brown: OK AWESOME, can any other word show how awesome this guy is on the guitar? IMO one of the top 3 if not #1 guitarist @ bonnaroo this year. Reminded me of a better Police show... where its types of songs you hear in bars in the south... when ur drunk.... lol. The White Stripes: They started slow, but picked up to a pace that you were pissed if they were to stop. ALA, when they turned all of the lights off and made everyone on the sides of the stages start to clear out because they thought to show was over. Then renvigerated everyone once they came back on! (ALso if you were on the right side of the stage by the fence. Did you see the guy tripping in slow motion with a huge smile on his face?) Hot Chip: WOW... I didnt realize they had THAT much energy live!!!! I thought their work was creative from their albums, but their live show BLOWS their recorded work strait into the trash. If these guys are coming to your local region i suggest you check them out!!!
Partial Sets:
Mute Math: only caught one song while walking by... and YES they were supposed to be my 2nd show of Friday, but i had been awake for over 24 hours and had to sleep, but listened to them all the way back to Camp Ferris Beuler. The Richard Thompson Band: Ok... I don't even know who these guys were, but they rocked it nicely. I've always been a fan of the souther bluesy rock, and they just hit the spot after an excellent Cold War Kids performance. Tortoise: Only caught 1 song, but didn't think that they were all that great in a non-night setting =/ Brazillian Girls: I caught 4 songs of theirs and it didn't affect me too much that the lead singer just seems like a Bjork Wanna-Be attention *****. She had great stage presence, but none the less i left. Michael Franti & Spearhead: I caught only 2 songs from this group, but unlike most on this board they were unfortunately not my cup of tea. The Nightwatchman: I caught his last 2 songs and it was great how he really interacted with the crowd and getting down to the common persons level! Gogol Bordello: I was chilling by the metal statue of the head by the tree with the pods in it (on the back side where there was shade), and I listened to a good 50+ minutes of Gogol Bordello. WAY AWESOME... I gotta say, this band's live performance just blew away their recorded stuff. Maybe since i heard 50+ minutes of them i could count them as "Seen performances." Keller William's WMD's: This is kind of the same as Gogol... I wasn't by the stage, but my concentration was directly on them for a good 50 minutes, and this guy definitely deserves a bigger tent than "The Other Tent."... BUT! His style of music definitely deserves a nice chill area to perform at, so in the end it worked out perfectly. The Flaming Lips: Only stayed for half of the show, but it was everything I would have expected out of them..... BUT WAY MORE LOL! The Decemberists: I only caught the last 2/3 songs by these guys (that cover WAS AWESOME!) and I have to say they were great performers and showmen/showwomen. Widespread Panic: THOUGH I wasn't actually at the main stage ever for this show, from camp Ferris Beuler you could hear EVERYTHING in almost perfect detail (without sound deteriation). Not to mention being in the right state of mind at the time I could hear it near perfectly and it rocked!

Full Sets- Black Angels- good...some songs felt like they had a touch of Tool Mute Math- Fantastic energy, really enjoyed most of their stuff Kings of Leon- Good stuff, bad technical issues with soundsystem Black Keys- These guys rocked, hope you were lucky enough to see it for yourself ;D Ziggy Marley- Great show, great positive energy...only show I saw at What Stage in the heat of the day that I didn't mind Spoon- Thought they were great...enjoyed the fact that so many peeps were scattered in that timeslot Flaming Lips- Holy crap, it was flipping amazing. Easily the best of Roo '07 ;D Wolfmother- Liked it, but almost died from heat exhaustion (and I was in the shade) Decemberists- Thought they sounded really close to their recorded sound...I was impressed. Seemed to take the Roo '07 record for helicopter flyovers. White Stripes- Very good show, Jack seemed very energetic
Partial Sets- The Little Ones- Enjoyed it Tea Leaf Green- Pretty good, but hung out on the hill behind the stage and didnt get into it very much James Blood Ulmer- Liked it, but it was warm Cold War Kids- Liked it, but it was a sauna if you didn't have shade Nightwatchman- Caught the end of it, seemed decent Tool- Had massive headache going into the show and the volume in the deep lawn was out of control....had to retreat to camp Regina Spector- Gogol Bordello pretty much ruined it imo, too much sound bleed...WAY too much The Police- Didn't see enough to judge, but didn't seem like anything special Sasha and Digweed- Thought it was great stuff, cool visual stuff too...crowd was "very" into it WSP- Really enjoyed what I saw, but began falling asleep because of no sleep on saturday night
I think I saw more complete sets this year than any other and most of them were bands I had heard very little or nothing about. It ended up being one of my most musically satisfying Roo's and I didn't see a bad set all weekend (yes, this includes The Police).
Complete Sets:
The Black Angels- Loved everything but the mopy keyboard player, she kept distracting me. Rodrigo y Gabriela- Blown away! Singing "Wish You Were Here" was a religious experience I would put on par with singing "Tennessee Jed" in 2002. Cold War Kids- Good pop-rock tunes and I dug the singer's voice. The Roots- This was when I discovered "the pit". Pissed me off until The Roots came out and wiped my mind clean. Being a former sousaphone player myself I was impressed with Tuba Gooding, Jr. Best version of "Roxanne" all weekend. Old Crow Medicine Show- Up there with Rod y Gab as the best sets for me of 2007. Loved the fact that the singer kept calling it "Mancatcher" as that is what I called Manchester when I was growing up there. Ziggy Marley- Any Marley is better than no Marley at all, but Ziggy didn't disappoint although how he survived in that all denim outfit is beyond me. Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals- Great set. When the energy started to die down in the crowd out walks JPJ for a "Dazed and Confused" that melted faces. Tops it by bringing out Ziggy for "Get Up, Stand Up". The Police- Loved the fact they didn't play a "greatest hit" show as I always felt their best songs were album tracks. Thought Stewart brought enough enthusiasm to make up for the other two, and I was impressed that Sting even realized he was in the state of Tennessee. Pete Yorn- I liked it. He's got a good voice and seemed to enjoy playing to such a large crowd. Wolfmother- I have a soft spot for three piece rock bands, so I really enjoyed the boys of Wolfmother. The frontman had a great enthusiasm to him that kind of infected me. The Decemberists- The only downer for me during this set was the girl who moved in front of me after Wolfmother, sat down on my feet so I couldn't move my legs, and proceeded to stay seated through The Decemberists writing in her journal how awful they were. I decided to love them just to spite her. ;D The White Stripes- The show that closed out Roo 2007 for me (sorry WP). As the sun went down and it finally started to cool off Jack and Meg come out and make us all jump around and get hot and sweaty all over again. A set that has converted this kind-of fan into a true devotee.
Partial Sets:
Ryan Shaw- Nice voice. The National- Good songs. Franti and Spearhead- Sounded great from the bobbleheads, but moved on since I couldn't get close. Tool- Sounded great, but made the concious decision to leave to get a good spot for Superjam Superjam- Body gave out about an hour in and had to walk away from my great spot right up front. STS9- Got a piece of pizza before leaving Centeroo for the night and sat and caught some of this set. The Flaming Lips- Ran back to the campsite to get my monk outfit on and ran back, but too late to get close so I just roamed the outskirts of the crowd. Gov't Mule- Wandered over during the Lips to check out some Mule. Sasha & Digweed- I was in the area for this whole set, but it is a partial because I split my time between the Other Tent and dancing in the Arcade to DJ Logic. When I got too hot in the arcade, I would dance out to Sasha & Digweed to cool off.
A great musical weekend, and I can proudly proclaim....

Full Sets
Rodrigo y Gabriela - I met a cool guy in the cinema while waiting for the NBA Finals (which was not shown because of some problem with a satellite setting, btw) and he told me about Rodrigo y Gabriela. I had never heard of them, but when he explained their music to me, he was so passionate and it seemed like somthing that I would be into, so me and my buddies checked them out...
WOW... unreal. Not only are they excellent musicians, but they really know how to involve a crowd and get the audience going. I was pretty blown away. That was a great way to start the weekend.
Tool - Been a big fan for a good while, but this is the first time I had gotten a chance to see them live. They EXCEEDED my lofty expectations. I expected Maynard to possibly get annoyed or be rude to such a diverse audience, but I was shocked at how talkative and interactive he was. From what I've heard, he usually doesn't say a word during Tool sets.
The music was absolutely brilliant, the lights/lasers were insane, and the scary video on the screen was probably playing the most psychedelic experience I have ever had at any concert.
....and Tom Morello for a Lateralus jam????? :speachless:
Super Jam - I have to say, I was disappointed. The music was good and just SEEING John Paul Jones jamming out was well worth my time, but the jam just didn't seem that 'super' to me.
Allow me to explain... When I think of 'Super Jam', I think of several guys from different groups joining in at different times... sharing the spotlight...
I mean... Ben Harper is good, but the Super Jam felt way too much like a Ben Harper show. They should have brought in different guitarists... There are so many great bands there, and the super jam is just the same 3 guys? And it started late and ended early?
I was disappointed... but at least I can say I saw John Paul Jones live.
(I was sick when I heard he played with Mule... I'll never forgive them for putting Mule vs. Lips, forcing me to make a difficult decision... grrr)
Jorma Kaukonen - I didn't get a chance to see Hot Tuna, but I caught Jorma's acoustic set on the Sonic Stage with a mandolin player (don't remember his name... but he was great). I've always been an Airplane/Tuna/Jorma fan, so that was a great experience. He was playing just a couple feet in front of me... awesome.
Ziggy Marley - Brought great energy. It was damn hot, but it is supposed to be when you are listening to Ziggy, I guess. I don't know how he survived with that denim outfit on.
The band was excellent and the crowd was really vibing. Good stuff.
The Police - I guess I'm one of the few, but I thoroughly enjoyed the set. I see a lot of people complaining about a lack of energy, but I felt the opposite.
Then again, I had pretty low expectations going in. They hadn't played together much in the last 25 years and none of them can stand each other, so I really expected a 'greatest hits' show with little emotion.
They actually stretched out quite a few of their tunes, Sting's voice was excellent and the band did remarkably well in being tight, eventhough there is only 3 of them and the margain of error is very small.
I was impressed... call me crazy.
The Flaming Lips - Wayne is officially my hero. The guy is just what Bonnaroo is all about. I walked over to grab a decent spot as The Police were playing their encore and what do I see? Wayne, out on stage, interacting with the audience during soundcheck. What other major band does that? He just seems like the coolest guy.
The 'War Pigs' soundcheck was absolutely great. I hope someone got a recording of that.
The show was out-of-sight. From the amazing music to the spaceship to Wayne's insightful thoughts in between songs to the laser pointers... it was just so much fun.
The Lips should play 'Roo every year. They are made for it.
Wilco - I had never heard a single Wilco song, but went to their show on the advice of someone whom I met during the week. They were excellent. They brought a lot of energy and their music wasn't anything like I had imagined. Very cool.
So good, in fact, we decided to head home after Wilco... it left such a good taste in our mouths and was the perfect cap to a great weekend.
After Rod y Gab melted my brain, I can't remember much else. Easily the best show of the weekend. If you missed that show I feel for ya.
Also saw all of: FLips, STS9, Police, Ben Harper, John Butler Parts of: Mule, Franti, Gogol, Stripes and many others incl/ a bunch of the small stages (Jazz, Mountain Music, etc.)
All in all saw fewer complete sets that normal but more amazing shows.

TOOL- went to tool not really liking them dont know if it was the a cid but that show blew my funking mind. whoever said tool would ruin roo hahahahahahaha is all i have to say about that.
WEEN- ok so front row to the left dressed as jesus funked out of my mind. sweaty sweaty sweaty. no water. barely an inch to dance people around me must of hated me cause i made room to dance sorry to those around me. that show was great went on forever fat lenny encore wow ween killed me
Flaming Lips- wow didnt get a good spot felt sick from ween but still ruled war pigs was sweet. pisses me off the put a stupid beer tent right infront of the stage. beautiful versions of waiting for a superman, and do you realize. i love the lips wayne is a god.
SCI- great vides at this show room to dance right up front. keller shows up sings stayin alive made me so happy
SUPERJAM- again way to crowded no room to move and couldnt see a damn thing but still great show
Little Ones / Sam Roberts / The National -- Saw bits and pieces and was only half paying attention as we were hanging out at the back near the road and meeting up with friends and chatting during these sets. Good stuff and some of it was really fun but nothing "hooked" me enough to suck me in and drag the crew along. Bummed I missed R & G but something that I totally cannot remember now required me to leave then.
Fri:
Richard Thompson. I know I saw some of this but I cant remember for the life of me anything about it. Friends said it was awesome so will have to give it another shot when I can.
Kings of Leon. These guys are really good. Not my taste in music so much but for what they do they are fantastic. Unlikely I will see again but enjoyed it.
The Roots. Now that one kicked some major ass. I loved this show and it had me dancing and diggin. The whole hip-hop tribute song was a riot with the covers of Bismarky (sp?), Salt'n'Peppa, Snoop Dogg, etc. This show rocked. Always worth seeing. Left early to catch the last hour of Manu Chao and was torn up about it.
Manu Chao. Arrived late from The Roots. Was hard to shift gears but Chao was awesome. Talk about energy and ability to work a crowd. Killer show from what I saw. I want a whole set next time! Bummed I missed the first half but The Roots were too good to miss.
Tool. Sounded incredible, songs are great, music rocked, but I could not see crap of the stage from where I was and the lightshow, while neat, didn't do it for me (sorry). I think the Floyd shows and late night Laserium trips made me less susceptible to trippin out on Tool's graphics and lasers. That, plus no more psychadelics for me = good show but a let down. I wish we could have actually seen them well enough to watch them play.
SuperJam. I think I might have cried a little this was so cool. ?uestlove was just awesome, Harper has the perfect voice for this stuff and played so nicely, plus JPJ just made me smile from ear to ear. Harper sitting for the set to play lap guitar did cause some pushing and difficulty seeing and bad crowd behavior but I was thrilled just to watch ?uest and JPJ.
Sat:
Gogol Bordello. Only caught the last three songs but...... holy crap..... They are INCREDIBLE!! Absolutely must see a full set very soon! Will sell organs to get to Gogol Bordello show!
Ziggy Marley. Never disappoints. Was a great show and I really enjoyed it. Pretty mellow but really good. I missed the first 30 mins or so but was easy to slip and enjoy the groove.
Ben Harper. Ok, it's Ben Harper. It's always good and no difference here. Another great show from a great musician. Had a pretty decent spot.
The Police. We could have moved up more and in hindsight we should have, as it was not nearly loud enough even being pretty much right in line with the spotlight & camera area out from center stage. Needed more volume, for sure. Good show, excellent musicians, but honestly disappointed in their level of showmanship. Copeland had promised something totally unique or at least something different for Bonnaroo and we got nothing but a standard Police show and a pretty short one at that. Oh well.
Tried to get into Flaming Lips but by the time we got food and got back over there it was futile. We got hosed on this one. I wanted to see them soooooooo bad. Am already looking for where I can find them very very soon. Hung out in the jazz tent for a beer and saw some Amendola but not enough to get a sense of it. Nels Cline played, was cool to see that.
The Dynamites. Totally kick ass funk with a great band and their singer is incredible. These guys were banging out the funk something wicked awesome and even being dead tired at this point I was up and dancing.
Sun:
Saw a bit of Charlie Louvin then Weir & Ratdog. Enjoyed the bits I saw.
Wilco. I loved them. The whole "I need to go to frontman school" thing was so endearing to me. A great set, just a joy to listen to, and Tweedy was so incredibly sweet and friendly I just loved being there. Left a little early to get a good spot for White Stripes and it almost killed us to leave. Thanks heavens friends had saved us a good spot as this packed up fast.
White Stripes. Holy f'in mother of god they rocked so hard. That was just an amazing show. I looked around at one point in the OCEAN of people (way too many to be just a sea) and as far as the eye could see (through the dust) were hands in the air keeping the beat. People were crowd surfing at the Stripes! Too funny. As the last show for us, this was just a perfect ending to the weekend. Amazing.
All in all, a damned awesome weekend! Thanks to all the inforooers for helping prepare me for my first 'Roo!!
But I've heard voices not in the head Out in the air they called ahead Through ripped out speakers Through thick and thin They found a shelter Under my skin -Evgeny Aleksandrovitch Nikolaev
