I know, for me personally, I'd MUCH rather hang out w/ Sammy than Eddie.
DEFINITELY, I'd rather hang with Sammy that most rock stars... did you ever see the Cribs with Sammie's Cabo house--- it's Rock Star Party Palace Central over there, (with zero pretention)
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
Just so I have this straight, did Michael Anthony leave on his own or was he kicked out to make room for Wolfgang? I suspect Eddie can't get along with Sammy or Michael cause they haven't changed their partying ways. It's difficult for a recovering addict to be around that sort of thing.
Eddie has lost a lot of credibility with me although he is still an amazing guitarist. When Van Halen first broke out he was jaw dropping amazing. The first album and 1984 were great albums.
My opinion still stands though David Lee Roth is an ass with diminished talents. Their show truly sucked back in the day and there is no reason to believe they'll be better now. Plus they are completely wrong for Bonnaroo
Why? I'm sure they would play their most famous song. ???
I despise that song, everything about it.
the keyboards, the horribly written guitar solo, the vocals are pretty bad.
but on your other question, no i would definitely still attend bonnaroo if they played. no way in hell would i let the presence of one band and its die hard fans dictate whether or not I saw all the smaller bands that I <3

Just so I'm on the record on this issue... I'm pretty sure Van Halen is one of the very few bands that could make me stay home from Bonnaroo. I find their music unlistenable. Frankly, I'd rather see Michael Jackson or Peabo Bryson headline than Van Halen. I understand that many people really enjoy Halen and that's great for them. But if they come to Bonnaroo, I'm sitting out.
Dixie Chicks, they're just fine.
Whoever made the comments about the VH1 classic reunion vibe is dead on. I don't have a problem with the occasional reunion, but let's hope Superfly doesn't just rush out and cling to the first thing that's happening. Because if they do... look forward to a kickin' Ace of Base reunion in 2009.
I hope VH has a reunion, however I sort of hope they wouldn't have a show at Roo. I like VH, don't get me wrong, and would go see them, but I think booking them at Bonnaroo as a headliner might be more problematic than anything else.
VH just like The Police have a large following of fans. Many of them are older, but there is that younger generation like my 16 year old brother and the 10 year old kids I babysit for that also worship Eddie and crew. I just think the diversity among the fans would probably pose security and safety issues because you would have so many different types of people sharing space in 80 degree weather. Not only that, I am sure the number of people that would buy tickets JUST to come to see VH and not stay for the whole festival would be fairly substantial, and how would that play out with the other bands?
Just thoughts, I would love to see VH regardless and would still go to Roo if they headlined, but I can just imagine how different it would be.
oh, you mean like tool? and how everybody freaked that tool would ruin roo with their metal music and their metal fans? and how the police fans would ruin roo with their leg warmers and pink polo shirts and white don johnson sport coats? oh wait, they worked out pretty good. wern't there threads on this board about this same kind of sterotyping of tool and the police? as far as i know, i think the 1st time- 15- year- old- burner and the 50- year- old- veteran and the 20- something- metal- head got along just fine at roo '07. people who truely dig music (and go to roo) are there for the same reason you are. the music yo! ;D
lol....... van halen. at roo. ;D well i guess anything is posssible after this year. and judging from all of the clamoring for sh!t shows form the new diverse roo crowd some of these insane suggestions could happen. aerosmith? van halen? i could see superfly doing it. atleast they would almost have to be capable of putting on a better show then the police did. but it still seems laughable to me. but who knows. im sure superfly is checking into how many radio plugs they would get from a VH headliner. maybe get them, toby keith, ted nugent and skynrd. that will get them all sorts of radio mentions and ticket sales to the nascar crowd. throw in rage, incubus, nin, 311, pearl jam, smashing pumpkins, and the chili peppers and ya might as well call it woodstock 99 next year. radio roo! woooo!!!!!
why all the unconditional love for roo? why would you go if they had a bunch of crap? i can kinda relate. i said the same thing. but that was back when the lineup hadnt gone to hell and before the price went from an arm to an arm and both legs and before i was aware that there were dozens of fests to choose from. there are just so many great fests out there with stellar lineups and no hassles, a wonderful sense of community, and at a lot less cost. to each their own. but it seems silly to just say im going even if it sucks. i guess roo has turned into more of hipster radio fest with a couple of jam shows sprinkled in and there arent that many radio band fests out side of roo, coachella, lolla, and vegoose. but nuts even if your into radio bands i would rather see them at lollapalooza or something then deal with roo and pay roo prices. radio bands shows all sound the same, it will be the same show at lolla and every other stop on the tour. so why deal with it all for those types of bands?. if i can buy a loaf of bread for a dollar somewhere, but roo wants 35 dollars plus ya gotta walk 5 miles in 95 degree heat while inhaling dust, stepping over mountains of garbage, and being pushed and shoved by punk hipsters and metal fans, be searched like a prisoner getting checked into super max only to find out they dont sell bread to anyone with glowsticks then i would certainly go with the dollar bread. i wouldnt say well roo was cool 3 years ago so im shopping there even if they have outdated, irrelevant, and inferior bread at an over inflated price. i guess im just really down on roo this year. every year it loses a little bit more of its appeal. and this year really hurt. i hope they dont continue with this diversity. i pray for dave, radiohead, and phil to headline next year!!! that way they get their mainstream ticket sales with great music as opposed to the police, tom petty, aerosmith, or van halen selling tickets but putting on horrible, half length, greatest hit shows. just my opinion. a bit negative i know. but it is what it is. ;D

^^^^^^^^ Yawn!
Bla bla bla bla bla expensive bla bla bla dust bla bla bla hipster bla bla bla jam bands bla bla bla bla glow sticks bla bla bla bla bla bla used to be bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla just my opinion bla bla.
You may want to get a new record there, Dude. That one is obviously broken.

I saw Van Hagar in the 1995-ish timeframe when Brother Cane opened for them in Birmingham (I LOVED BC - used to sneak into clubs in Atalla and Gadsden AL to watch Damon play in the band-of-the-weekend pre-BC days...but anyhooo) and they were still pretty good then....Eddie could still tap and shred like a MF....I'm sure he still can. And I really thought Sammy did a great job....never was a big Dave fan....never have gotten into guys that obviously took more time to get dressed and ready than me... Not that it did much good in his case

i'm surprised by some of the hatred for VH. maybe its an age thing.
Yes it is. I'm 28. I grew up in the 80's, but was not old enough to "get into" alot of 80's music. Now today, I hate the good majority of it. There are plenty of good 80's bands out there, but IMO, VH isn't one of them.

That about covers it, in my opinion. (Edit) Just to clarify: I'm not a jamband fan, for the most part. I've always been a big proponent of the idea/argument that Bonnaroo needs to mix it up a little, but some of the bands that I've seen mentioned lately seem like a joke to me. I don't want to keep seeing Dave, Trey, Phil and WSP every year, but I also don't want to see Aerosmith, Incubus or Van Halen EVER. It shouldn't be an "either/or" thing, but it seems to be. Instead of expanding their efforts to expose and promote some of the great bands that make up "the in-between", Superfly seems to just be changing direction entirely. A VERY weird and generic direction, in my opinion. Frankly, like with The Police this year, I think that people get too sucked-in to the hype that surrounds some of these bands. I mean, would anybody have actually given a damn about a Police reunion 5 years ago? I don't think so. Sadly, I think that some/many people are all too willing to buy into the "they're touring again, so they must be worth seeing!" mentality. Why is that? There are reasons that these bands have been broken up for years. Huge egos and progressive musical irrelevance, just to name a couple. I don't understand why people are so enamored by has-beens coming from out of nowhere just to proclaim their former 'greatness' in a totally transparent attempt to cash-in. Am I the only one that noticed that Shakedown and 'tent only' took a backseat to VIP this year? That was no mistake. Bands like The Police draw more of an "affluent" crowd (and their children), thus gauranteeing more cash for SuperFly and AC. That, in it's self, speaks volumes about the path that Bonnaroo is heading down.
Okay, that about covers it.

While I understand where most of your rant came from and accept your opinion, this line really gets me... Roo might cost me an arm and two legs. Lolla, when factoring in ticket prices, taxi to/from venue every day, hotel prices (unless you live in or right near there) would cost me both my arms, both my legs, the appendages of my firstborn child, and possibly even the fingers of my first mate.
edit: oh, and to answer your original question of why the unconventional love for Roo... Well, I have not had any horrible experiences with Roo yet. Granted, I just went for the first time this summer but it ranks up there as one of the best weekends of my life. So, I prefer to just use personal experience to judge rather than anyone else's unfortunate mishaps.

I tend to have to agree here.....you have to realize.....'Roo may seem like it's in BFE to most of you guys....and it IS - LOL! But for some of us it's MUCH more convenient than most other concerts. You have to realize that not EVERYONE plays EVERYWHERE.....a lot of acts don't play the Nashvilles or Charlottes or Birminghams (certainly NOT the Huntsvilles!) Heck, sometimes not even the Atlantas, Memphisis or New Oreleans.....which are 4, 5, up to 7 hour drives! And a little heat and exercise, inconvenience? so what? Expensive food and beer? I've been to Chicago and Cali, you can't get beer for less than $6 there.....not at a Festie for sure! Nah.....an hours drive away, 4 full days of music for less than what 2 concerts would cost me in ATL and it's less than half the distance.....no hotel, no parking, no tipping, no airfare......yeah I'll stick with 'Roo.......I can see why you might not want to, but for me, can't see a downside.... ;D

No I never once thought Tool or The Police would ruin Bonnaroo. Both of those bands have pretty different fan bases but I know a lot of Tool fans can appreciate The Police and vice versa.
I just think VH has a little more divided fan base. For example, people who claim VH sucked with David Lee Roth, and those who think they sucked with Sammy Hagar. Personally, I like VH either way because I appreciate Eddie Van Halen and could care less about who is singing what, though Roth did make for some interesting lyrics in his day. And talk about the spandex, but let me not digress
I just think VH is one of those bands that is so largely popular and has such a diverse fan base that they would be best suited to playing their own tour versus a large festival, unless it was a festival that doesn't have camping or something.
I can already see I've been smited for saying that I just think VH has more potential issues than Tool and The Police. But I guess basically I think VH has obtained a different sort of success that puts them in a different category.
Just my 2 cents And I agree with the person who said U2 is the only potential big name that would headline, but I think Bono's agenda lies elsewhere. Just to clarify so I don't get smited even more, I love U2 and Bono, but heart lies in global issues. While I think he would appreciate a festival like Roo that brings so many different people together, unless it was somehow going to further his global goals, I don't see it happening.
Anyway, before I end up with negative karma beyond all reason, I am going to stop Don't want to start another war about who should play what and where, because I would go to Roo regardless.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything, but I have to ask about this. What shows are you paying that much for? I went with a friend to see Marilyn Manson (not my choice. it was a favor.) 2 weeks ago($50), I'm going to see Bjork($50) and GirlTalk($20) (seperately, of course) in September and I just bought my ticket for The Echo Project festival($120) in October. All of that combined (3 shows and a 3 day festival) for about what I paid for my Roo ticket this year(if not a few dollars less).

i may sound like bit of a broken record. but so do all of these 'how about van halen at roo' threads. or incubus, 311, aerosmith, etc...
and i will likely still go next year for latenights alone. and i may do the hotel thing. i get to camp at plenty of fests each summer. why torture myself and ruin my health at roo? especially when i dont care for most of the daytime lineup. and everything on that daytime lineup that i want to see and will miss will be at another festival with a much better time slot 1 or more times throughout the summer. the latengihts and sundays headliner are all thats left for me. and it will probably be enough to get me back. but i go to quite a bit of things. if i could only do 1 or 2 or even 5 fests a year roo wouldnt be on my list anymore.
and i guess lollapalooza depends on your situation. i have friends in chicago and live relatively close. so it would be way cheaper for me. but that ones a bad comparison to roo. i think it would be fun to go. but i dont care for much of the lineup. no camping. no real latenights. and it seems like most radio type fests think 2 hours is a headliner and other shows are an hour. so even with some of my favorite bands on the list why would i go see them have an hour slot? roo kicks lollas ass. no doubt about that. but in terms of mainstream or more radio oriented lineup there arent that many choices so i included it. but i can see how it might be more expensive with hotels. vegoose and coachella would probably both cost similar or more to roo too. so that wasnt worded the best way. i guess if you like radio music your just screwed. you get to deal with the mainstream media outlets and all of there over taxation and commercialization. it comes with dealing with the mega media giants. i guess it applies more to people who are into the music that isnt on the radio. the jam, jazz, bluegrass, hip hop (the good stuff, not radio rap), and electronic type stuff. which imo IS the festival scene. these other fests are the tourist traps that use the true scene as a way to make tons of cash. and superfly has taken roo from one extreme to the other. and it seems to me like they did their best to seem like a true part of the scene to get it going and then abandoned it for profits. id like to talk to les about his statements in the beginning about what a kick in the ass it was to play a fest that wasnt controlled/solely motivated by profits. i doubt he can still say that with a straight face.
its sad that superfly has taken something so beautiful and turned it into a comercialized tourist trap intent on taxing everyone involved to the max. i understand the need to make money. and i understand that having these types of bands on the lineup gets you entioned on radio stations all around the world and sells tickets. and it sells tickets to people with money to spend on vacation. instead of to hippies that live a different lifestyle and arent just on their major vacation for the year. they spend their money on party favors that cant be taxed by roo. they almost never buy anything from shakedown vendors because its so grossly over priced. and most are worried about having money to get to the next show not spending it on vacation shopping. i guess different strokes for different folks. and if roo had started off this way it wouldnt be such an issue. its been warped into this over time. and its sad to alot of people. they own the property, couldnt they leave roo alone and throw soe other fest with this stuff?
4 full days of music for less than what 2 concerts would cost me in ATL and it's less than half the distance.....

That's $240 if my addition is anywhere close to right....I paid less than $200 for my 'Roo ticket. Most concerts at the Fox or Phillips for a big name (Police. White Stripes. etc) are going to run you at least $75-90 a ticket for a non-nosebleed seat. For a really GOOD seat upwards of $100 for a big name at Phillips Arena. I think I paid $41 or so for Godsmack at the Fox in May and that was a good deal. But still, that's maybe 4 concerts vs 4 DAYS ....still not even close.....
Edit: EchoFest is new....I will be interested to see how it works out. If I weren't going to VooDoo this year I would def check it out. If they do it next year I will def try to make it. I think it could be the new 'Roo if done right.....let me know how it goes....there are several people from the boards going I think.....we should get some good feedback...

Sorry about that. I'm kinda impatient sometimes.
I didn't get my Roo tix until they were at their most expensive point. With service charges and 'signature required' delivery it cost right at $240. As far as the "4 days vs 4 concerts" thing goes, it's actually 3 shows and a 3 day festival that is supposed have 60 bands on the line-up by the time it's all said and done. You can't beat that, in my opinion.
Edit- And while I am going to see Bjork at the Fox, I tend to stay away from Phillips and places like that. Nothing really against the venues. I just don't seem to dig most of the groups that play at those places.

I think that you're right. This could be the "new Roo" if done right. The promoters have signed a 10 year lease on the land, so they're evidently planning on making this a permenant thing.
I'll definitely let everyone know how it goes when I get back. We're actually going to drive to the farm this weekend and get some pictures of the land.

Love the Fox just because it's such a beautiful old building....crappy acousitics tho' HATE Phillips.....it's a SPORTS arena....and you can't help but feel it.....even when you are there for a concert....ick. Why oh why did they move away from the Georgia Dome? It has SUCH a better feel to it? Sigh. But yeah, the smaller venues are better, like the Tabernacle or, what's the place in Little Five Points? It's a guys name isn't it? can't ever remember....Sorry. Rant off.
