I love the Tabernacle. I LOVE The Variety Playhouse(L5P)! (BEST SMALL VENUE EVER!) The Bjork show will be my first concert at the Fox.
As a rule, after seeing several shows at Thompson-Boling Arena (knoxville), I will not see a show in a building that was meant for any sporting event. The sound sucks and I always feel like i'm in the wrong place.
I think that you're right. This could be the "new Roo" if done right. The promoters have signed a 10 year lease on the land, so they're evidently planning on making this a permenant thing.
I'll definitely let everyone know how it goes when I get back. We're actually going to drive to the farm this weekend and get some pictures of the land.
Post the pix, I think we would all like to see them. You know, the timing of this fest couldn't be better.....with all the negative vibes from a lot of people this year over 'Roo (present company excluded ) if they pull this off well they could really capitalize on the malcontent 'Roo crowd that is looking for the old 'Roo vibe, smaller fest, more jam oriented, back to the roots kind of thing....this could really help Echo grow and give Roo fans a good, close, viable alternative. Or just another good festie party! ;D Hope they realize the goldmine they are sitting on and don't half ass it!

Yes! The Variety! That's the one I was thinking about! Hot Tuna was there the weekend AFTER I was in ATL in July Isn't there another place like RIGHT next door to the Variety that's even smaller? Never been in there, but they have smaller bands that play there I thiink....or maybe just movies.....like I say, never been in there....just walk by usually when I'm on my way to a concert or checking out the shops or flea market....I LOVE third Sat in L5P!
I think you'll like the Fox just for the architecture and the history. It's a beautiful place and artists love to play there. Like I said, the acoustics can be for crap if the sound guys don't know what they are doing, but it's OK. It's very intimate for a 5000 seat theater because of the layout. That's another thing that makes it so cool. And if it's an 18 or 21 and over show, they will have the bars open and they SHOULD have Sweetwater! They didn't have Blue at Godsmack, but you might get lucky
and i cant wait to see the pics man. im so excited about this one! btw whats the weather like in ga in oct.
In mid Oct (which is when Echo is scheduled) it can be quite variable, but USUALLY it's still quite temperate. If we are going to have an Indian Summer for the year, this is quite usually a good time for it, so it may still be pretty warm during the day (maybe even up into the low 80s!) but will drop off into the 60s or mid 50s at night in general. Fairborn is NOT in the mountains (like Manchester is) so you won't have the altitude thing happening to cool it off at night....just the normal drop off in humidity and temp. IF it happens to hit an EARLY cold snap (and mid-OCT would be EARLY this far south) it could get as bad as 50s in the daytime and low 40s at night, but that is VERY unlikely....Rain, however, is VERY likely......

i am really excited to get the rest of the lineup. i sure hope its less like the killers and more like the rest of the lineup.

Yeah, I know. The Killers? That one took me totally by surprise. I have some friends that really dig them, so I may have to check them out again before October.
As far as the weather goes, I have no idea at all. We moved down here in mid November last year. It's gotta be better than June in Tennessee!

The small venue next to The Variety Playhouse(SweetEvilJesus, it is the best small venue ever) is called The Five Spot. Its a bar that has a small area and a stage for a show. I saw Animal Liberation Orchestra in The Five Spot a couple of months ago. Only about 100 people there and it was an awesome concert!

I'm really surprised so many of you are taking these band threads seriously. The only reason people are throwing out names is because its not any fun to speculate that regulars like les and the dead and and trey etc etc. It's all to be in good fun. I never take any of these threads seriously, and I doubt if Bonnaroo will ever bring in 90% of the bands mentioned, esp the really controversial ones you all are getting yr panties in a bunch about. If you are really so offended by the suggestion of a band because their music is somehow BENEATH you, than kindly suggest a more appropriate alternative and explain why.
As for the folks who somehow didn't have fun this year, I'm sorry you didn't. I've had bad times at bonnaroo before, bunk merch, illness, unfriendly and irresponsible neighbors, Nazi-esque security staff....the works. I never once thought to blame Bonnaroo or the bands on the lineup for my problems. and i didn't have a problem with ANY of those things this year, and thanks to snagging 1st teir tickets I paid less to go that any Bonnaroo since 2002. So I sure can't complain. and I thought the lineup was great. The Police were a misstep in my opinion, and I hope Bonnaroo has learned its lesson. But the mediocrity of their set didn't even phase me, and plenty of people around mewere enjoying it, so who cares. 1 band cannot destroy Bonnaroo. 3 bands can't destroy bonnaroo.

the latest u. s. drought monitor shows a moderate to extreme drought continues to impact middle tennessee ... with the southern counties experiencing the worst conditions. this week 100 percent of the state of tennessee is classified in at least a moderate drought ... up from 94 percent last week. 75 percent of the state is classified in at least a severe drought ... which is up from 67 percent last week. finally ... 29 percent of the state remains in at least an extreme drought ... which is no change from last week.
some locations across middle tennessee have burn bans in effect due to the extreme fire danger.. and water restrictions due to the increased demand for and/or lack of available water. check with local fire or water officials for any restrictions or regulations in your area.

And please PLEASE shut up about the dust. They couldn't water the roads. water restrictions were in effect for the entire state. The COULDN'T water.
this year is not the first year the dust has been a health concern. its horrible every year. roos water dosent come from any public resevoir anyhow. it comes from private wells. watering restricitons are for public water supplies not privately owned wells. so "please PLEASE shut up" about the water restrictions.

Didn't we already cover the "I-love-Roo-I hate-Roo-It's-Roo's-Fault-It's-Not-Roo's-Fault" argument the entire second half of June and the majority of July? Either you had fun or you didn't, life goes on with or without Roo.
So, remember when we were talking about the possibility/inprobability of Van Halen at Roo?? Yeah, about that...
ok - guess I can jump into the fray about VH - I like VH - would I go see them on a "reunion" tour - NO - I think The POlice kinda ruined that one for me. My attitude on 80's bands regrouping and touring again - if you cannot get into the studio and record a new album to release and then tour in support of that - please don't tour. I mean come on - you could not get along back then - what makes you thik that you can now - plus - you have not played together for years - all in all - nothing good can come of it - except that you make money - that you obviously need or you would not be doing a "reunion" tour and you end up with disgruntled fans who saw you way back when and want the same kind of show that you will be unable to give because you are 20 years older, have ruined your body with drugs and alcohol and you just plain do not have the energy that you used to have.
i may sound like bit of a broken record. but so do all of these 'how about van halen at roo' threads. or incubus, 311, aerosmith, etc...
and i will likely still go next year for latenights alone. and i may do the hotel thing. i get to camp at plenty of fests each summer. why torture myself and ruin my health at roo? especially when i dont care for most of the daytime lineup. and everything on that daytime lineup that i want to see and will miss will be at another festival with a much better time slot 1 or more times throughout the summer. the latengihts and sundays headliner are all thats left for me. and it will probably be enough to get me back. but i go to quite a bit of things. if i could only do 1 or 2 or even 5 fests a year roo wouldnt be on my list anymore.
and i guess lollapalooza depends on your situation. i have friends in chicago and live relatively close. so it would be way cheaper for me. but that ones a bad comparison to roo. i think it would be fun to go. but i dont care for much of the lineup. no camping. no real latenights. and it seems like most radio type fests think 2 hours is a headliner and other shows are an hour. so even with some of my favorite bands on the list why would i go see them have an hour slot? roo kicks lollas ass. no doubt about that. but in terms of mainstream or more radio oriented lineup there arent that many choices so i included it. but i can see how it might be more expensive with hotels. vegoose and coachella would probably both cost similar or more to roo too. so that wasnt worded the best way. i guess if you like radio music your just screwed. you get to deal with the mainstream media outlets and all of there over taxation and commercialization. it comes with dealing with the mega media giants. i guess it applies more to people who are into the music that isnt on the radio. the jam, jazz, bluegrass, hip hop (the good stuff, not radio rap), and electronic type stuff. which imo IS the festival scene. these other fests are the tourist traps that use the true scene as a way to make tons of cash. and superfly has taken roo from one extreme to the other. and it seems to me like they did their best to seem like a true part of the scene to get it going and then abandoned it for profits. id like to talk to les about his statements in the beginning about what a kick in the ass it was to play a fest that wasnt controlled/solely motivated by profits. i doubt he can still say that with a straight face.
its sad that superfly has taken something so beautiful and turned it into a comercialized tourist trap intent on taxing everyone involved to the max. i understand the need to make money. and i understand that having these types of bands on the lineup gets you entioned on radio stations all around the world and sells tickets. and it sells tickets to people with money to spend on vacation. instead of to hippies that live a different lifestyle and arent just on their major vacation for the year. they spend their money on party favors that cant be taxed by roo. they almost never buy anything from shakedown vendors because its so grossly over priced. and most are worried about having money to get to the next show not spending it on vacation shopping. i guess different strokes for different folks. and if roo had started off this way it wouldnt be such an issue. its been warped into this over time. and its sad to alot of people. they own the property, couldnt they leave roo alone and throw soe other fest with this stuff?
Because drawing 80,000 people to see Dave Matthews Band, or Widespread Panic or The Dead is any less commercial than 80,000 people to see Tool and the Police.
We get it. You don't like anything except jam bands. You dont like that Bonnaroo now has bands other than jam bands. OKAY. Seriously. We get it. But don't go calling the same festival "more commercial" when just as many people are coming. Besides, like we, and even know have said...there are other jam band fests. Go to them if you dont like Bonnaroo's lineup...but personally, I wouldnt care to see WSP 27 times. Or Trey 17 times. I think a lot of other people would like to see other artists as well. Just because YOU dont like seeing something different doesnt make it bad. It doesnt make it commercial either.
And for the last time. "commercial" and "popular" doesnt necessarily mean "BAD" either. If that was the case, The Grateful Dead would be one of the shittiest bands to ever exist. But luckily, they're not.

Sorry to not talk about Van Halen some more and I can't speak for exactly what dude was saying, but:
I think when people are saying that Roo is getting more and more commercial, that is not necessarily limited to whether or not the lineup is limited to jam bands. I don't particularly like jam bands, so I was all for Roo branching out musically, and still am fine with it for the most part (although I have questioned some specific choices, I understand everyone has different tastes and that's fine with me).
Where I take issue with the commercialization of Roo is with things like 1) the extreme expansion of sponsorship (I know that they have to have sponsors in order to increase their capital so that they can make the experience better, but there comes a point where it is just sponsorship for the sake of increasing the bottom line by selling advertising. Seriously, Garnier Fructise? In some ways, Roo is starting to feel like one big interactive billboard) and 2) the obvious catering to the more affluent crowd (which has already been mentioned before as in the form of effectively killing shakedown and tent-only in favor of an over-developed VIP area). I know it's a business. I know they are in it to make money. I know that involves a certain amount of commercialism. But there comes a point where it gets to be too much, and Roo is getting awfully close to that point for my tastes.
(And again, sorry for continuing the off-topic discussion)

its not about jam or not jam. im not gonna go and list everything i like musically. i assure its much broader then just jam. but no it dosent include radio music. there is no way that you can compare the 80,000 people that will show up for the dead and wsp, or even radiohead and dave, to the mainstream asshats that tool, the police, the white stripes or van halen would bring in. i not the only person who was upset by the obviously new crowd at roo this year. sure ive bitched about the lineup before. but in the past i always came back and said that i had worried for nothing. this year it wasnt that way. and it wasnt that way for quite a few people. so there is apparantly some difference between tool, the police, and the stripes vs. dave, dead, and wsp. prior to this year the only headliner at roo that sucked imo was tom petty. yet another mainstream radio superstar. is it good music? yes. is it a good show that should headline roo? not a chance in hell. like i said i listen to all types of music. not just jam. and admittedly i dont hate all radiobands. i like pearl jam, rage, nin, beastie boys, stp, rem, etc... hell i even like van halen. 5150 was one of my favorite albums growing up. but i dont want any of them at roo. not because its not good music but becasue it brings in a different crowd. and in my experience bands with massive mainstream appeal put on horrible, cookie cutter greatest hit shows. and those suck, imo. for me festivals are half about the music and half about the environment/community. roo lacked on both ends this year, for the first time. and was severly lacking in the people/community aspect. there was enough good music still around to see. but the headliner situation was horribly disapointing. aside from sunday. it sux to pay 250 to see 2 headliners that you cant even sit through. its not because i hate all that isnt jam. i just appreciate a great show and it seems that the jam bands understand festivals and bust it out big, petty and the police show up to collect a check and get back on the tour bus. and its not just the musical aspect of it. like hilari said wtf is garnier fructis doing at roo??? if the showers are sponsored why do we still have to pay for showers? noones gonna get violently ill from not showering for four days. maybe they could have put that shower water on the roads to kill the dust. oh wait. no profits in that. no sponsors for that. and security has turned roo into a place that just isnt as much fun as it used to be. and commercialization isnt based on attendance. there is no way that anyone capable of forming thoughts can look at roo from 02 to 07 and not see the progression towards the mainstream. its just a fact. some may like it, some may hate it. but its the way it is. to say wsp and the dead are as mainstream or draw the mainstream crowd that tool and the police do is absurd. many past roos have shown that. i dont recall pop stations and classic rock stations nationwide doing roo ticket giveaways for the dead and wsp. or even for dave for that matter. i dont know that roo was ever talked about on the radio until this year. you can say oh i enjoy the new mainstream and you dont. ok a difference of opinion. but to say that roo isnt more mainstream and the crowd hasnt changed is insane.
I don't agree with everything dude said, but I will defend to the death his right to say it. I only hope that he is saying this in some form to the fine folks at SF/AC as they are the only ones who can do anything about it. I have sent more than one e-mail to SF describing what I saw as some of the problems at this year's Roo (admittedly not many from my perspective). I have done this every year since 2003. I may be fooling myself into believing it has any effect, but then again, may be not...

Sooooo....if I was drawn to Bonnaroo so I would have a chance to see the White Stripes and the Police (among others), does that mean I'm an asshat?
