I think everyone is missing the point that everyone else is trying to make.
I doubt it's a case of everyone missing everyone else's point. I mean, we are all a pretty intelligent group here. I think it's more likely (and I'll own to it) that we all have our view and we are using the weaknesses we see in other people with opposing view's posts to RE-MAKE our points yet again. Not an uncommon occurance on this or most message boards...
So, we gonna stop beating the dead horse now and move on to something new and more interesting that will probably end up right back here or someplace that looks a lot like it? ;D
BTW...sorry if I offend anyone...I am a pretty straight shooter and call em like I see em...sometimes that is a little blunter than it should be
2004 was the first big shift away from the roots and towards the more mainstream. i love dave but him being there in 04 and 05 is why everyone suddenly knew about roo. and idont know if yall have noticed but everyone and their mom knows about roo now. my mom heard about it on a country pop station. my friend who listens to nothing but true garbage heard about it on the top 40 station and my uncle heard about it on the local metallica/gnr station. and my grandma saw it on cnn. and all of those outlets werent talking about anything but radio bands. hell they had the headliners as the police, tool, and the whitestripes. i never heard wsp entioned on a mainstrea media outlet even though they were headliners. it was all tool, white stripes, fountains of wayne, dierks bently, and the police. so yes i think that its the mainstream lineups that have grabbed the attention of the mainstreamers. and the hipsters have taken over a good portion of the lineup too. i dont really mind with the hipsters. i like some of the music. they just seem like such a quiet and depressed bunch. not a whole lot of fun at fests imo. but im sure im biased. i love my hippie paradises (nelson ledges!!!) im not sure how all "hippies" got lumped into a jam or nothing category. i really dont see much more diversity out of roo if you take away the radio bands. most fests have rock/jam, jazz, soul, bluegrass, hiphop, elctronic/trance/rave, and whatever other labels we can come up with.
Rock/Jam- Ratdog, SCI, Widespread Panic Jazz- Something Else Tent, Ornette Coleman Bluegrass- Railroad Earth, Old Crow Medicine Show Hip Hop- Aesop Rock, El-P, Galactic Hip Hop Extravaganza Electronic/Trance/Rave- Sasha and Digweed, STS9
Maybe you should walk around a little more.... These are just a few examples of each off the top of my head from this year. I will agree that the "soul" category was lacking. Bring on The Delfonics!!!!!!
you definitely misunderstood me. i never said that roo didnt have some artists in each of those categories. im just saying that most of the other fests do too. the only thing that would make roo "more diverse" is radio music and a bit more indi/emo stuff. there is all this talk about roo being so diverese and i just dont see it unless you mean the radio filler stuff to sell tickets that noone would sit through if it wasnt a headliner.
and i certainly dont take offense at anyone elses comments. everyone sees things their own way. i just like to talk about music and fests.

The weird thing is that of the bands I listed, the only one I have ever heard on the radio (admittedly I don't listen to much radio) is Widespread Panic. No offense taken (and hopefully none given) but I do disagree with the point that Roo is deteriorating into some form of radio station festival. It has been, for me, the one place I can be exposed to new music in all of its varied forms because I don't listen to the radio or watch MTV2. If a band is played on mainstream radio, I don't know about it, but I certainly don't think they should be excluded simply because a record company has decided to promote them by pushing them on radio.
Being on the radio doesn't mean the band sucks. Liking popular music doesn't make one an asshat. Having popular bands does not make Bonnaroo suck. Having only popular bands would make Bonnaroo suck.
Radio ,at least terrestrial radio, does suck. Too much repetition and commercials.
I can sort of understand where Dude is coming from. I'm assuming that we are both avid hippiefesters. (he more than me) Bonnaroo HAS changed. It isn't what it was in 02. There are aspects I miss. I don't think anyone is saying Bonnaroo sucks the big one, it just doesn't have the patchwork feel to it anymore. That's sad because Bonnaroo was built on the reputations and traditions of the "jamband" scene. The truth is that if the bands don't come the hippies will go elsewhere, I know personally that if there aren't any of my favorite bands there, or even a small amount of them I'll take my festie money elsewhere. It's a bummer because I'd hate to walk away from this fest feeling like "my scene" was exploited to build this big THING and then abandoned. There are examples of this happening already. SCI and STS9 conflicting w/ Superjam is one. SCI put out a stellar show for Roo's FIRST latenight (along w/ Karl D) and thi year, knowing it was the band's last year, put them against colleagues and a legend. They should've had that slot a little more open IMO. That's just ONE example.
does roo suck.... no
will I be back.... probably, depends on the line up, allgood was great this year :/

i honestly couldnt have said it better! i usually keep my mouth shut cuz its hard for me to get across what i mean through typing. . but you hit the nail on the head for me and for many of my friends who choose to not go back this year .. as for next year, the lineup will have to be killer (IMO of corse) to get me back. There are far too many other fests that are MY prefered type of scene that i would rather check out.keep in mind i have justin timberlake, my morning jacket, sts9 and Michael Buble on my ipod, and loved/love roo, but i prefer a more laid back hippyfest type atmosphere.... /rant

I hear their fans are really....weird...you know????
Nope, definitely not Bonnaroo type stuff...... take your emo money elsewhere..... ;D ;D ;D
Seriously....that's what it all comes down to, with AllGood, Project Revolution, Lolly, Coach, 'Roo, VooDoo, BSJ....and the dozens of other festivals there are lots of choices and adding more every year. If Superfly wants people to come to Bonnaroo instead of Lolly or Coach they are going to have to give people a reason to come to BFE Tennessee and camp out for 4 days in hot as hell TN June with possible monsoons, trekking miles a day and sitting in the blazing sun or poring rain. As opposed to staying in a 4 star hotel in Chicago with A/C eating in gourmet restaurants and clubbing all night then taking public transport right up to the venue....some bands have more loyal fanbases than others who will endure a lot to see them year after year. Some bands only tour every 3-4 years and some bands only LAST 3-4 years period! I think Superfly is trying to find the most LUCRATIVE combo of all those and still keep a unique atmosphere that makes 'Roo well 'Roo! Will they push the envelope as far as they can to maximize the $$$? Sure, because they realize they can't grow the festival on just a hippy/jam band concept anymore esp with the other competition, there is only so much you can do with that. Will they totally go mainstream? I don't see it, just because of the location of the festie and the reputation they have built upon for being "not like the OTHER big guys" They can't DO what Coach and Lolly do or offer what they offer in services and amenities without HUGE investments in infrastructure that might never pay back. And then still not even because of location. And moving 'Roo isn't an option since they just bought the land. So....I think they are still feeling out just what directions they can go and how far....and the attendance and public feedback we give them in forums like this AND, better yet - emails and letters to SuperFly, AC and Big Hassle. And of course our wallets as to whether we choose to go back or not.....that is what will decide how far and what directions they will go ultimately.

I think that Hilari was trying to say the exact same thing. Selectively or not, we are all missing/ignoring each other's points. People, on both sides, are chosing to only respond to certain aspects of the "other side"s argument. I know that she was, in no way, trying to imply that anyone here is anything less than intelligent. She was just trying to point out that we are ALL guilty of picking and chosing what issues/points that we will respond to. Essentially, I think that she was just trying to start the "agree to disagree" end to this particular subject. I have to agree with her.
She feels differently than some of you do. You feel differently than some of us do. We've ALL had ample chance to make our individual points. No one wins. No one loses. No one's wrong. No one's right. We won't cahnge your mind. You won't change ours. We're ALL just spinning our collective wheels, at this point. Let's just let this ridiculous, well-covered discussion die.
Anyone else agree?

I must admit, this has definitely been one of the more respectful and mature debates I've seen in a while on this board. The only namecalling was asshats, which I found too funny to be bothered by and since it wasn't directed at anyone here it's all dandy.
As far as the whole "I won't change your mind and you won't change mine" attitude... well... isn't that more or less true with every argument? I mean... just look at Presidential debates. I look at it as more of a way to see views other than your own, not necessarily to change anyone's mind. I'm only an advocate of saying "I won't change your mind and you won't change mine" when debates turn into personal attacks.
But yeah, I think most people probably are running out of new things to say... I know I have. Thanks for the worthwhile debate/argument fellas, nobody changed my mindset on the issue but I did learn a few valid points that I was unaware of before.

^That's really all I was trying to say. (As was Hilari, I believe) We seemed to have passed the "my opinion/ your opinion" point. We've all just been repeating ourselves(or someone else) and talking in circles for a while now.

Also, whether or not you agree or disagree shouldn't affect my karma. I'm just stating my opinion.
Welcome to my club. Ever since I stated that I like VH, people have been hitting me left and right.
To all you DOUCHEBAGS that smite over musical differences, "FUCK YOU". There. I said it. I'm sick and tired of you targeting those that don't hold the same musical tastes as you. I wasn't rude to anyone. I didn't argue with anyone. So, for those of you that are smiting us for stating our opinions, "FUCK OFF" and grow up already.
(The only reason the cuss words are in quotation marks is so it will show on the screen and not be censored out.)

Unless 'roo blows my mind with the lineup next year, I will probably just end up going to Waka again. I had a blast!! Laid back, "hippiefest". There may be more cops, but as long as you aren't doing anything to harm yourself or others, they won't bother you. I recommend Waka to anybody that hasn't been before. You get to hot?? go jump in the lake. Your tired of walking all day?? You can bring a bike or take the NO WAKA shuttle (FREE!!).

Hell yeah!!! Well put! We're all different. Everyone who can't except that can go f!ck off.
Also, Oleander (AKA post whore numero.......dos....right?) I for one will help rebuild your karma.
Yeah, VH is silly at this point. Dave is washed up and kind of a joke but he is responsible for probably the single most effective UUUUHHH in all of rock history. I am a sucker for a good UUUUHHH in a song and that one in Hot For Teacher is the best.
... " I got my pencil ... gimmee somethin' to write on, man .... UUUUUUHHHHH!!!

classic.
True. They really did have some good moments. There was a time when they were kings, and everybody wanted to play like Eddie. Unfortunately, even though they were truly original, they spawned the Hair bands that nearly killed rock music.

i said in another thread that i can't imagine not loving Led Zeppelin. well, i can say the same thing about Van Halen. i bought '1984' the day it came out, on vinyl even. and i will always love that band. since that time long ago i have discovered many many other artists that i love and they weren't all "hair metal" or "heavy metal". some of them are even "jam". variety in music is so beautiful that it should be celebrated, not smited.
a reunited VH will never be as great but none of that diminishes VH's influence. i truly can't understand why anyone would say that VH wasn't good or important. Eddie changed rock 'n roll forever. he was the most influential guitarist in history to come after Hendrix. there is a definite "after-Eddie" point in the history of Rock. so the VH imitators did not kill rock and roll, they were just doing what so many other bands have always done: trying to be the best by copying the best. "hair bands" did alot more to help rock n roll than to kill it. i will not SMITE someone for hating VH just like i would not SMITE someone for liking that nasty non-singing witch Patti Smith. (a perfect example of why the rock hall of fame is a joke)
i will give all the karma i can to oleander for standing tall and to alyroo for loving "hot for teacher"
