I don't understand Lez Zeppelin being part of the press release
thats the only thing that doesn't make sense.....I understand NME and every other news source misreading it or copyng and pasting other headlines....but why does ac/sf do this in the first place?
So, more than likely its
Thurs: some band Friday: Metallica Saturday: PJ Sunday: Jack Johnson
or (wishful thinkin)
Thurs: Jack Johnson Friday: Pearl Jam Saturday: LZ Sunday: Metallica
Thats a stretch, but probably the only rubiks solution.
One thing to consider is that JJ has already announced that he is "headlining bonnaroo". I don't think he would make such a declaration if he knew it wasn't true. If he is set to headline, then the only option would be to add a Thursday headliner. But if that's the case, and LZ goes to the Saturday slot, and PJ is bumped to Friday, then when does Metallica play? No way they're closing out on Sunday, and I don't think they'd agree to be the Thursday headliner (although I'd be more than happy if that was the case). Just something to ponder.
At the same time, I can't help but think they wouldn't be making this huge Metallica/Kanye gamble if they didn't have an Ace in the hole.
JJ could be thursday, Zep can close the fest on sunday.
Just make sure it's not the only reason you're going, and you'll be fine. Hell, I'll buy everyone in this thread a beer just to show there's no hard feelings, regardless of whether Zep plays or not.
7 2008 2:41 PM EST Led Zeppelin Bonnaroo Controversy Might Be Lez Zeppelin's 'Stairway' To Success
It was perhaps one of the bigger music-press snafus in recent memory, and it began at midnight Wednesday, when the press release for this year's Bonnaroo festival was distributed via e-mail to various members of the media. Along with news that Kanye West, Pearl Jam and Metallica would be headlining the event, the announcement further boasted that New York's all-femme Zep tribute band, Lez Zeppelin, had also been confirmed for the bill.
Months before the lineup went public, though, several unsubstantiated rumors had spread like wildfire, suggesting that other band, Led Zeppelin — who had recently reunited to play a gig in London — would be anchoring the festival's bill, performing their first Stateside concert in well over two decades. As a result, a number of prominent publications — including the esteemed Associated Press and the Chicago Sun-Times — erroneously reported Wednesday morning that it would be Led Zeppelin, not Lez Zeppelin, topping Bonnaroo's roster. Embarrassing corrections followed within hours, some defending the mistake: "The press release was misleading, to say the least," read the Sun-Times' retraction.
According to guitarist Steph Paynes, who actually crossed the ocean to catch the reunited band's O2 arena gig, Lez Zep doesn't mind all the free publicity they've been attracting in the wake of Wednesday's press release. She also says that while they're not the real thing, the girls plan to bring it to the people at Bonnaroo.
"It was quite extraordinary," Paynes, who helped found the cover band in 2004, said. "We were told by Bonnaroo that the lineup would be announced at midnight, and I happened to be surfing the Web at that point, and I was going to put the lineup on our MySpace page. Then, these stories started coming in. At first, it was really quite nice, because the first stories listed the lineup correctly, and listed us on there because of that expectation that Led Zeppelin might be playing.
"But then, I got a Google Alert to this AP story, and I read it ... it was incredulous," she continued. "I wondered, 'Is it April Fools' Day or something?' And then everything started happening, and it's been this whirlwind ever since. We've gotten so many calls and so many messages. People want to know, 'Who are these girls?' In fact, some people still think it's Led Zeppelin, masquerading as us, and that they're going to make some sort of announcement somewhere down the line. I just think it's amusing."
Still, Paynes said she doesn't see how such an error could have been made. For starters, if Led Zep had been booked for Bonnaroo, she suspects the press release would have led with that information — not Kanye, Pearl Jam and Metallica.
"It's an extraordinary case of wishful thinking on behalf of some young writer at The Associated Press," she said. "How could somebody conjure, from a single sentence that is not even at the beginning of a press release, that Led Zeppelin was playing Bonnaroo? I don't think they would have 'Led Zeppelin confirmed' three paragraphs in. I think this is just what people are hungry for, and what they really desire. I hope the avid music lovers who come to Bonnaroo will come with their minds and ears open. I think we're going to surprise a lot of people."
Lez Zeppelin have been playing club gigs for years, and even released a self-titled LP that was recorded by Led Zep producer/engineer Eddie Kramer. Paynes said she started the band, obviously, because of her love for Led Zeppelin's music.
"The fact that women are doing this, I think there's a shock value to that," she said. "We're not kitsch — we take it seriously, and we're all professional musicians. And at first, people were just blown away by us. I think we do it in the right spirit."
Paynes doesn't believe Bonnaroo's organizers tried to pull the wool over anybody's eyes but does think her group was asked to play the festival for a reason.
"I don't think they tried to trick people — I think they're probably stunned," she said. "I can only imagine that they're stunned that some major, major news organizations could piece that together from what they'd been given. Do I think they were being a little cheeky? I think they had heard about us and were interested in us for a while, but certainly, I think they decided it would be great to have some sort of Zeppelin spirit at the festival, in light of the speculation."
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!

i'm happy led zeppelin was not announced, as tickets would sell online in minutes. too quick for me to get my hands on one.. It would be nice to reward the mere 80,000 fan capacity with an epic led zep announcement after tickets have already sold out.. they have yet to announce the late saturday night superjam.. john paul jones played in it last year and they didn't announce it until 4 weeks before the show.. just before tickets sold out. Led Zep would make bonnaroo an international attraction for years to come.. don't think they haven't tried to get a reunion.

Festival organizers apparently had some sort of actual admission to the Lez Zep placement in the release being a joke/cheekiness, in light of all the Led Zep rumor.
I'll even break down the December 07 rumor thing for you. Okay, the rumor was that "Metallica and Led Zeppelin" would be playing Bonnaroo, and festival organizers said "that's not accurate" (or something along those lines). That could have as easily meant that just the Led Zeppelin part of that wasn't accurate.
And I don't think that comparing them to the Police helps you much either. Yes, The Police are big, but Led Zeppelin is even bigger. And I really can't think of any substantial incentive for Bonnaroo organizers to lie about them coming. I mean sure, if Led Zeppelin decided they wanted to come at the last minute, I bet festival organizers would take 'em. But right now they don't even have a tour organized -there are no plans in the works.
I'm now officially moving myself from the "led zep is coming" camp to the "I wouldn't even care if Colbie Caillat was the scheduled headliner" camp. you know why? I met a person tonight in her mid twenties who is so into Hanson (yes, the MMMbop Hanson), she actually made a homemade Hanson calendar with pictures of live Hanson performances she took herself.... I made her show it to me so I could be sure that she was serious.. and there it was ... wow... so I figure if somebody in the year 2008 can love Hanson enough to make a homemade Hanson calendar, I can be happy with Metallica at the roo. I dare anybody to find a flaw in this logic.

Bottom line.. Led Zep won't announce ANY shows they plan to play if they plan to play until their world tour is announced first.. which we may see at the grammys.

Something to consider.
Last year, tickets didn't go on sale until one month after the initial line-up went out(with the exception of presale).
This year they go on sale 9 days after the line-up is announced. My personal opinion is that they are giving us bonnaroo faithful to get our tickets before they announce Led Zeppelin in the following weeks. Because we all know tickets will disappear if, neh when Zeppelin is announced.
CNN just has a 10 second clip on Bonnaroo and Led Zeppelin.
They started off saying, "Did you hear, Led Zeppelin is playing Bonnaroo." That got my attention, but then it said, "No, not the reunited band, but their alter ego Lez Zeppelin. this has led to confusion and angry fans..."
So there you go, CNN said no Zep, instead only lesbians playing Zep.
