and if bonnaroo doesn't NEED a way to sell out, then why would they feel the need to announce LZ? superfly is trying to hold off the scalpers and undesirables, and allow for regular roo'ers to have their shot. why is THAT so hard to believe?
That serves no reason other than to cost them money. This lineup will sell the fest out. There is no need to waste the premium of adding Zepellin, which cuts straight into the profits of an already sold out fest, like you've said.
I think you guys think that Supefly entertainment loves you way more than they actually do. They are here to make money. There's a reason they have advertising and marketing everywhere; they are a corporation. Adding the biggest band ever to a festival thats already sold out, and thus won't them any more money is the stupidest financial decision they could possibly make.
Hooty, I completely agree with your reasoning and you are probably right..... but.... I think they would have something to gain by adding Zep. The advertising value of being the festival that got Zep. That would fuel Bonnaroo for years to come. But just to be clear, if I had to put money on it, i'd say you are probably right. Nevertheless, I'm holding out hope anyway. If there wasn't such a glaring hole at the top of the lineup, I probably wouldn't be.
I'm still predicting Zeppelin headlining and here's my reasoning:
This all started December 1 last year with this statement being told anonymously to a music mag:
"“Zeppelin just confirmed for Bonnaroo. They can't officially announce until after the London gig so pass it on! Also Metallica is confirmed on the bill too!”
Okay, so this was during Zeppelin practicing for the reunion show, and the management probably setting up the preliminaries for a soon to come 'world tour'. Internet rumors zoomed around, something Superfly NEVER wanted.
Superfly then issues this denial on December 3rd:
"The rumors that are out there about the Bonnaroo 2008 headliners are inaccurate. We're very excited about the lineup that we're putting together for this year's festival. We'll be announcing the confirmed lineup toward the end of January/beginning of February."
Not only that, but Metallica management came out the same day and "flat out denied" ever being booked for Roo, an even stronger and more specific rejection than that of Roo.
So then comes the Daily Mirror headline at the beginning on Dec 31 with NEW sources proclaiming that Zeppelin has officially been confirmed to headline Roo.
Again, Superfly issues another denial saying, ""It's still a rumor and the information in the Mirror is inaccurate," said Ken Weinstein, president of Big Hassle. "I speak on behalf of (promoter) Superfly and AC Entertainment."
So we come to the day before the lineup is announced and NME claims to announce a 'surprise' act for Bonnaroo. They announce Zep was CONFIRMED (the 3rd confirmation news item in 2 months) and yet had to change their story when Superfly didn't announce them.
Now, as for the people telling me I'm a conspiracy theorist, fine so be it. Already one act from the original 'conspiracy' has been confirmed, so what are the odds that the first band it mentioned are also on the bill? And you offer 'quotes' from Superfly as proof that somehow there will be no more major headliners...Well guess what, Superfly and Metallica were full of it on their quotes, so why can't Superfly still be yanking our chain?
I find it too hard to believe that dozens of people at NME misread LEZ for an entire day. Something fishy is going on, and there's no way all these sources are pertaining to the Lez Zeppelin thing. Just look at the timeline of events.
Imo, Superfly will deny this all the way up until the schedule is released, when low and behold, Jack Johnson is not the 3rd headliner but Zeppelin is, and it is here when Zepp would also finally announce a world tour for sept/fall of 08.
Okay, so I do sound like a conspiracy nutjob, but there's no way Superfly would screw over its loyal fans by having many get shut out during the ticket frenzy which would ensue.
Just my prediction though
very very very true. karm for you. As to what could superfly gain? They would be the FIRST US venue for zep to play in. Think about the press they gain, if they can book zep this year, they will be able to book absolutely anyone. I see this festival being HUGE in the years to come if zep is there.

I really, really hope you're right, and, like everyone else on this message board, won't give up hope until June 16th... ;D
Rock me mama like wagon wheel, rock me mama any way you feel, hey, mama rock me. Rock me mama like the wind and the rain, rock me mama like a south-bound train, hey, mama rock me...
LED ZEPPELIN are to reunite for a second time to headline the 2008 Bonnaroo Arts and Music Festival in the U.S. Organisers for the event, which will be held over three days in June (08) in Manchester, Tennessee, have confirmed the legendary rockers will top the bill, which currently includes Metallica, Pearl Jam and Kanye West. The announcement comes after months of speculation that the Stairway To Heaven hitmakers were planning on playing more live dates after they reformed for a one-off concert in London in December (07). Founding members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones teamed up with Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer John, to take to the stage at the O2 Arena for a tribute concert in honour of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. And the gig has been followed up by rumours of more shows and a possible world tour. But the band insist a full tour will have to wait until at least September (08), after frontman Plant finishes his promotional commitments with Alison Krauss

I don't know how accurate it is that the organizers have confirmed it..... I was kind of hoping they would wait until after tickets were on sale to announce it IF they are going to play.
I'm just wondering what NME was up to. From the announcement on their website the day before, it seems like they were prepared to run with the Led Zep story before they even had a chance to misread the official (LEZ CONFIRMED) press release from bonnaroo. Did they have a bad source or were they just yanking people around for the publicity?
On a side note, I've been listening to Lez Zeppelin tonight, and now I'm actually kinda jazzed about seeing them at the roo, I bet they will put on a great show!

there's no way i believe that LEZ was misread as LED.
here's how it would have gone....
"omgz john look at this...led zeppelin is playing at Roo!!"
"omgz no dude look at it...it says LEZ...not LED"
"omgz get the boss"
"omgz guys that says LEZ. lets call and confirm"
and this is where they would find out if it were true or not. there's no way that story would get read by not only NME, but by TONS of other news sources, and have them all be wrong. maybe some of them just followed the lead, but i promise you something is up.
I have yet another "theory." With all this Zeppelin stuff going on for the last 6 months, don't people think they will be somehow represented at the Grammy awards? JPJ will be there with the Foo fighters, Plant will be there for the Plant/Krause nomination and Page could easily be there. Is it possible they will make a big "bang" at the Grammy's this year? Then possibly begin to announce stuff (tour, etc..)?
I also think it is odd that tickets go on sale on a Saturday this year. I don't remember that being the case the last few years. Am I wrong on that?

If Bonnaroo's keeping Zep on the d/l, not only are they doing fans a 'favor' (assuming the prevalent theory), but they're also saving sponsors a bundle. I mean, I know if I were them, I'd be shouting it from the rooftops and charging sponsors an arm and a leg. Hell, if I were really trying to do a solid for the fans, I'd probably pass the cost off to sponsors and vendors entirely. And I think we'd all agree, there'd be no shortage of takers.
But I couldn't just jack up their fees (and expect them to pay it) without telling them why. And I couldn't trust them to keep it secret. So I'd give them the usual rate, maybe with an acceptable 'cost of living' bump, small enough not to scare anyone away. Assuming I sell all my tickets, there's a good chance I might make as much money as I did last year, maybe a little less depending on how big a chunk Zep takes. Or are they doing it 'for the fans' as well?
I could be making a killing on sponsorship... I could be making a mint on ticket prices... I could offset the huge price tag, and make a nice little bundle of green for myself.... but I won't. Because I want to keep tickets cheap, so that the 'real fans'.... the ones that 'know' Zep is gonna play, despite a complete lack of facts and a mountain of evidence pointing to the contrary.... can get their tickets cheap.
Didn't superfly have to wait last year to announce the police? I have a theory.. They are waiting till zep announces their world tour so roo isnt the only venue with zeppelin. That way the zep fans dont have to buy out roo in order to see them, they will have many more options around the country. IF zep is playing roo, it would make sense to hold off with this announcement till the rest of the tour is announced so roo isnt perceived as a one off in the states.
And the way the Police did was they waited until the day after the Grammy's and had a big press conference. I'm pretty sure Zeppelin wants to be the one's to announce anything and not Superfly.
Hopefully soon =/ maybe they will copy the police and do it right after the grammys? as someone said, JPJ and Plant are there, who says page wont make a surprise appearance. haha i have no clue though =/ According to Jambase, Plant is done May 22nd, so they are free for roo. Hopefully we hear something soon, this is killing me

i have a zillion people who have never been, and will not go to roo, trying to tell me that i must be dumb as a rock for believing this is still an option
maybe i'll have to look stupid by the end of it, but at least if i'm right, they'll feel even more stupid.

Just make sure it's not the only reason you're going, and you'll be fine. Hell, I'll buy everyone in this thread a beer just to show there's no hard feelings, regardless of whether Zep plays or not.
I think the ONE thing that will totally kill the rumor would be if Plant/Krause release more dates right around Roo. Obviously if Plant has a date scheduled for Saturday with Allison, it probably is safe to say it won't happen. But, until then...

One thing to consider is that JJ has already announced that he is "headlining bonnaroo". I don't think he would make such a declaration if he knew it wasn't true. If he is set to headline, then the only option would be to add a Thursday headliner. But if that's the case, and LZ goes to the Saturday slot, and PJ is bumped to Friday, then when does Metallica play? No way they're closing out on Sunday, and I don't think they'd agree to be the Thursday headliner (although I'd be more than happy if that was the case). Just something to ponder.
At the same time, I can't help but think they wouldn't be making this huge Metallica/Kanye gamble if they didn't have an Ace in the hole.
