Oh, I forgot to mention that when they announced the London show two million people entered a lottery to purchase tickets for a 20,000 seat arena. Two million people. There are only sixty million people in the entire United Kingdom (compared to 300 million in the United States). (Tickets were approximately $245USD, comparable to Bonnaroo which features about 100 additional artists.)
^^^ No way, man. Bonnaroo would not sell out in one day, even if led zep is playing.
LZ is not just gonna come over, play one show in the US and be done with it. IF (and that's a very big IF) they decide to play at ROO, they will announce tour dates before ROO announces them on the line up. Superfly isn't just going to announce it first. If they decide to go on tour, we will know about it beforehand.
Secondly, even if LZ does decide to come here and play only one show (which seems highly unlikely), it's not gonna be Bonnaroo. There are so many other places they could play. If they are only doing one show, it's just going to be a Zeppelin show.
While the music business and international media continue the "will they or won't they tour the world" debate, Harvey Goldsmith - the promoter of Led Zeppelin's December 10 reunion show in London - says the band's earning capacity is unlimited.
But Goldsmith, who was awarded the MBE for his services to music and charity, doesn't believe what The Times described as "a whole lotta loot" will be the motivating factor.
"Basically, the sky's the limit," he told Pollstar, without revealing if he's among the promoters who, according to The Times, are "structuring bids in the form of a large upfront payment to lure the band to their venues."
The paper reported that Led Zep is "being pursued with offers from both Live Nation and AEG," and claimed the latter put in an offer immediately after the London show, although it admitted it couldn't verify that info.
But Goldsmith reckons some creative thinking is more likely to win the day.
"They are one of the few bands around that do not need to tour for money," he explained.
"Not much point in talking hypothetically. Led Zeppelin committed to playing one show for Ahmet [Ertegun]. That was it," he explained, as if dismissing any question of his own future involvement.
"If they decided to go onwards there are so many different ways to reach an audience. Money is not the driver.
"Therefore, what would be important is creating an environment that worked both for band and audience. That would need a lot of creative thinking with the band's input being paramount."
If Live Nation or AEG is about to stump up "well over £100 million," which is where The Times is pitching the act's potential earnings, then they're not letting on.
"I wouldn't presume to have any knowledge or info on this," was LN head of global touring Arthur Fogel's reaction to his company's mention in The Times piece. However, he did admit to having thought about it.
Having persuaded The Police to reunite and take to the road again would suggest that producing a world tour for Led Zeppelin would be right up his street.
Anyone trying to prognosticate whether Live Nation is about to table a bid may be left feeling a little dazed and confused. While Fogel said he didn't profess to speak for Live Nation colleague Michael Cohl when talking about Led Zeppelin, Cohl himself is saying nothing.
AEG Live President Randy Phillips, who was at the London show, is clearly a fan and would love to promote a tour.
"Standing on the floor of the O2 Arena, I closed my eyes and felt like I was in college studying for finals again," he told Pollstar.
"As far as making an offer for a world tour that night, this never happened. I was told that the group are going to meet again in January to decide whether this was a one-off or if they will want to do more performances.
"Needless to say, if they decide to do more I would be honoured to be invited to make a proposal to be their tour promoter."
Live Nation's Los Angeles-based rival is seen as the other main contender by one or two of the U.K.'s serious papers, although Cohl will likely also have considered the fact the act doesn't have a record deal.
As head of Artist Nation he now has an infrastructure to deliver a tour and record contract, as the company has recently done with Madonna.
The will they/won't they debate may even be turning into a can they/can't they question as singer Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are set to tour in the spring.
Most of Europe, apart from non-qualifying countries including all those in the U.K., is also likely to be more focused on the continent's major soccer competition during the summer.
However, according to the Daily Star, the tour is definitely on and the act is already looking at playing Cardiff Millennium Stadium. It quotes Welsh Rugby Union chief exec Roger Lewis as saying, "We would love to welcome Led Zeppelin and we have already put in a request to Harvey Goldsmith."
Only time will tell if he's talking to the right person.
he loud and proud return of Led Zeppelin was the most lucrative event of the year for the touts and fans at the centre of a heated row over the resale of tickets online, according to figures published yesterday.
One of the leading online ticket resellers, Seatwave, said the average price for tickets sold through the site for Led Zeppelin's comeback gig at London's O2 arena was £7,425.
Online resellers have effectively created a rolling market for high-profile gigs and sporting events.
There is no legislation covering the resale of concert tickets and sporting events other than football matches but the culture, media and sport select committee will this week release a hotly anticipated report on the matter.
Desperate Led Zeppelin fans were willing to risk thousands on tickets sold through sites such as Seatwave. The tickets had a face value of £125.
The figures reveal that boxer Ricky Hatton's much-hyped bout with Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas was the second most popular event for users of the site, with tickets going for up to £3,050.
Dedicated resale sites such as Seatwave and Viagogo, as well as established online retailers such as eBay, have angered artists, managers and promoters who say they are profiting from online touting. But those behind the sites say the vast majority of their customers are legitimate fans.
The live music market is now worth more than £743m a year, and the online ticket resale market alone is worth an estimated £200m a year.

Thanks Steve - Strum - Becca ... you guys rock
and becca, heres some karma to balance out the smite because of the Foo comment
I'm a big Foo and RHCP fan...I've seen RHCP a few times including woodstock '99 ... I can tell you that a RHCP concerts and probably a Foo show (never been) has a totally different feel than 'roo.
Again, I like Foo and RHCP...
isn't there always bands at roo that don't seem to have that southern tennessee hippie fest feel that's how i felt about tool last year maybe more so because that band makes me crazy cause they play snoozer set lists but everyone else seemed to love them but really what band doesn't have the ability to play roo. it's an eclectic festival to draw all sides of the music world. maybe i just have to much of a man crush on dave grohl!!!

Grohl Rocks...you're right
Yeah, I don't really have a lot to back up my opinion...and I probably would be front and center for a Foo show at 'roo.
a Foo Roo..I like it..anyways, i digress
It seems like although 'roo and 'roo goers (myself included) want diversity, we want to make sure that things don't get to "standard" in music. Everyone wants to talk about the awesome setlist by gov't mule, or the superjam, or getting to see Ornette Coleman or seeing monkeys on tamborines....more than likely RHCP/Foo will put on a good show, but we know where their ceilings are.
Now if RHCP came out a played Dark Side front to back, while wearing those light bulbs.. I might change my mind.

i will say that i think foo at this point in their career might have a higher ceiling than most give them credit for. i don't want to say the bad word "mtv" around here but just for example when they played on there in vegas this past september they brought out guys from queens, eagles, gnarls barkley and motorhead. also when they toured last year they brought an extra 8 people on stage to have almost an orchestra feel so who's to say they couldn't bring out even crazier guests and get nuts with their set list if they were to play roo who is the best at getting the most out of every performer. no matter anyways we already know they won't be there. i'm gonna stop talking about them now because i feel like i'm talking like a giddy little catholic school girl with a crush defending my man!

I posted it in the sharing music thread. The link is still good.

I've seen the youtube clips...it sounded good.
Back to Zep, I think at this point I could take or leave LZ being there. Its not like my decision is predicated on them showing up. If its LZ on saturday, thats one less show I have to go to when they end up touring, and if they're not there thats one more awesome headliner I get to see (and i'd still see LZ when they tour)..either way I win

i actually thought it sounded a little strange i listened to it a week or so afterward maybe my expectations are to high. not to say i wouldn't want to see them because i do. just wondering if anyone else had the same thought.
moderators---isn't this the Led Zep rumor thread? I think some of these posts are getting off topic. Sorry to offend anyone...I was just thinking.
Yes, they are. Its hard to keep a rumor thread on topic. As long as the Led Zep stuff is contained to one thread though, we're happy.
Just a reminder though, should anyone ever feel the need to ramble in an off-topic nature, you are always welcome to join the crazies in the abyss of The Other Tent
" As far as making an offer for a world tour that night, this never happened. I was told that the group are going to meet again in January to decide whether this was a one-off or if they will want to do more performances."
I this is true then that means they sit down in January, HYPOTHETICALLY if the decided to do a world tour including bonnaroo say mid- late january, then it would take a decent amount of time to book gigs all over the world and make all kinds of contracts and what not. Even though i'm not a promoter or anything i would immagine that would take a month or two at the very least to put something as big as a world Zep tour together. That being said if they decide to tour is it fair to say that they might not even have dates and announcements till possibly march- april? From this article it sounds like the band really hasnt even talked about it much, I'm not saying they wouldnt want to do it but I just dont think they have enough time to put it together and make it to bonnaroo on time. I mean is bonnaroo in the practice of signing a Headliner less than a month before they announce the bands? I always assumed that bonnaroo would have thier headliners figured out months before they announced them, but I am probably wrong because I have no idea how all thats goes down. I want zep as much as the next guy i'm just saying I feel like there isnt enough time to get Zep on board. Anyone have any input on this?
I feel like it was just up until past few years it was held on the main stage. Superjam late night was started like 2 roos's ago with Trey, Mike, and the Duo. Am I wrong? I honestly can't remember.

I seem to remember Superjam in previous years (prior to 06) being late in the day Sunday, in tents or maybe second stage. And then yeah, the 06 & 07 superjams were late night, like you said.
Post by steveternal on Jan 9, 2008 10:15:22 GMT -5
You all are correct. There have been SuperJams as far back as '03. They were held in That Tent on Sunday afternoon, and they were a mix of musicians already at Bonnaroo, and surprise guests brought in just for the jam.
Yeah I think you are right about the sunday afternoon superjams. Here i am trying so hard to stay off the boards at work and i make it about 1 hour and 15 mins and now all I can think about is Zep in OUR tiny backyard out here in a Tennessee feild! In Manchester! Are there any other locals that are just so freaked out by that. All the other acts I have ever seen at the roo have been surreal cause i am like this is BEN HARPER in MANCHESTER. Last year I was going holy cow John Paul Jones in MANCHESTER and now this. I HONESTLY MAY OVERLOAD! I love you Bonnaroo!!!
thank you. i was thinking that it was at least in the afternoon. i guess position of the superjam will give us an idea of what they have in mind. last year was the first announced superjam. i wonder if they will do that this year?

I think it all depends - the consensus is that last year they needed a boost in selling tickets and announcing JPJ was to get that boost. If 'roo can sell out early, they probably won't announce it, and vice-versa...
Post by steveternal on Jan 9, 2008 14:03:14 GMT -5
^^^Yeah, I agree. But outside of that, I do think they'll keep it late night, and continue to get more impressive names together. That formula really made a difference the past two years.

Well, here's an idea. I'm not going to read through the countless Zeppelin pages to figure this out. The following artists will play at Bonnaroo: Robert Plan & Allison Krauss, The Black Crowes & Jimmy Page, and Mutual Admiration Society featuring John Paul Jones. We already know Plan & Krauss are likely. Black Crowes have a new album, or will have a new album and are touring this spring. They've toured with Jimmy Page before. I talked to Glen Phillips from Mutual Admiration Society and he said he's going to do another album with Sean and Sarah Watkins. JPJ toured with MAS last time they played. And then, the hilight of it all, Superjam on What Stage with Led Zeppelin.
Of course, I'm dreaming, but it would be absolutely amazing.
