With Mastodon and Metallica alone there are gonna be a bunch of pits. I personally cant wait. I am all for peace and love as much as the next guy but I need to get my anger out too. Nothing does it better than throwing down with a bunch of people looking to do the same.
don't forget Gogol Bordello! It's not violent moshing, but rather the thrill of seeing f-ing Gogol Bordello sheer exhilarance moshing! They fortunately played only an hour and 15 i think, anything more and i prolly would have passed out. BEST show of my life!

I know I probably can't say this, but I think tripping and seeing moshing would make me really uncomfortable. However, this won't affect me because i will not be seeing any of these moshing bands [nor will i be tripping ]
If you're up close and center, and not right up against the rail for a metal show, you should know what you're getting into. Of course there will be moshing for Mastodon and The Sword, probably Metallica too. Anything less would be disappointing.

Exactly, its easy to avoid, the people moshing want to mosh, and the people who don't want to aren't going to get thrown into the mosh pit.
^^^^I've long outgrown the pit myself, but if people want to mosh, so be it. As long as its the 'Clutch at Emo's' type of pit, not so much the 'S.O.D. at The Backroom' pit. For $250 a pop, you should be able to mosh if you want. As long as its friendly.

I think we can count on some friendly moshing. Nothing like a Pantera or Godsmack show where people are out to kill each other, but more of dance-moshing, with people head banging, jumping up and down, and running into each other because, after all, its really hard to stand on two legs.
there was a huge mosh pit for Tool last year down in the front. i was standing on the edge of it watching the show. It wasnt friendly moshing either. It was pretty violent. There was one guy who must have been about 6'6" and just JACKED and going nuts. Some little guy, like 5'3" jumped on the big guy's back and just started punching him in the head. I just don't understand the moshing phenomenon, especially for a band like Tool in which Maynard (lead singer) has said he doesnt want moshing at a Tool show. He's so against it that recently and their shows, they've had seats on the floor and not GA.

I was at the front for Tool, and there wasn't any moshing around me. But that was the What Stage. There could be ten mosh pits going on and I'd have no idea about it. I also left halfway through to make sure I'd be able to get in to David Cross.

this was over on the left side in front of the first barrier. it was pretty nuts. dust everywhere. also i got yelled at by someone in the band to put my camera away otherwise he was gonna smash it.
The way I'm thinking, they're gonna put Mastodon in either the slot that Clutch or Mute Math were in last year. That'll be the heaviest set of the whole weekend. Seriously...let us roughnecks have our fun, then we'll dance with everyone else for the rest of the weekend. Bonnaroo is a prime arena for freedom of expression. As long as we're not hurting anyone, I don't see what the big deal is. I've never purposely hit or tried to hurt someone in a pit. Sure, people get heated sometimes because they take getting knocked down the wrong way....but I don't see too many amateurs of the mosh being at Bonnaroo anyways. There's a pretty common understanding when you step foot into a pit that anything can happen. If you get hit...deal with it...that's kinda to be expected. If the mosh isn't your thing, hang back n laugh at us kicking the shit out of each other. It's fun! There's nothing mean hearted about it! I can't count the number of times that there's hugs and handshakes going back n forth after a show from people who were in the pit together. There's a mutual respect there that a lot of people don't understand. Nothing but love from me!

Moshing- A friend and I were on leave from the military in NY and walked in a club where all these "people" starting moshing. I believed we knocked several of them out cold before we left. Fun Times!

Idiots.. that is the reason. I guess I don't get the whole moshing thing. Your going throw your body against someone else's to the beat of the music. What the fuck?
We were leaving and several guys just thought they would slam themselves into us. So we slammed there head on the wall.
i can understand your reasoning somewhat in not understanding the mosh. a lot of people dont understand it. thats why i preach to stay away from the pit if you dont want anything to do with it. people get run into...thats what happens. but slamming heads into walls and knocking people out over getting run into while walking past a pit i dont get. that really doesnt make you any better than them when you think about it...worse probably
