Last year The police grossed $3.2 million per show. Metallica grosses $2.5 million
Last year Tool grossed $2.8 million per show. Pearl Jam grosses a mere $1.2 million per show.
that leaves 2.3 million dollars of budgeted headliners. Not to include the money that will be made by this year's dvd sales..
Bonnaroo grossed 17 million last year compared to the 14.7 million in 2006.. Becoming the the highest grossing festival in the world.. As the highest grossing festival in the world.. any reason you are budgeting your headliners?
Found these numbers on a myspace blog.. any explanations or corrections?
they're most likely getting a steal of a deal on Pearl Jam. The reason they would gross so little per show is because the tickets prices are kept reasonable. I sat 15th row on the floor for 50 bucks just a few years ago.
Jeez, how much DID the Police charge for a ticket to a show? Metallica ticket prices aren't too bad either. I had VERY good seats in 2004 for under $60 and they played for 2 1/2 hours.
I personally would rather them budget the headliners, instead of bringing a band like the police who isn't worth the price tag.
The Police got paid more than any band in the history of the fest and played the shortest set of all the headliners.
I also would question that Tool number, it seems too high. Tool tix are reasonably priced. And I seriously doubt Tool got paid that much to play Bonnarooo...

bonnaroo's a hell of a deal - last year i saw 42 bands at bonnaroo - that comes out to $6 a band - i saw the police on their reunion tour for only $6 - take that sting!!!

Yeah, Police tickets last year were totally unreasonable, to the point that one of my friends decided to go to Bonnaroo just because the Police were playing and he would be able to see 3 OTHER days of music.

you can't put a price on the love between panic and their fans, they've been going at it twice as long as pearl jam and tool, and they've built their name the non-commercial way

Pearl Jam plays a lot of "smaller" venues.
By smaller I mean like 10,000 seats - often times much less.
The Police and Metallica don't touch anything with less than 20,000 seats. I don't know about TOOL per se' - but TOOL plays a lot of festivals over seas - which gets them 1) more money to play abroad and 2) more money because festivals and venues outside of the USA are not regulated nearly as strict and often allow as many people in as tickets they can sell. That's why in Europe there is an 80,000 person music festival every weekend of the summer.
Metallica sold like 60,000 tickets in 30 minutes to play in Stockholm Sweeden last summer - I don't think Metallica could sell 60,000 tickets to play at any venue in the USA in under 30 years.
You can still buy Pearl Jam tickets for $30. Again not sure what a TOOL ticket cost in - lets say - Cleveland - but I paid $30 to see Pearl Jam play there last year. Pearl Jam also gives thousands of the best tickets at each venue they play to thier fan club for something like $10 each. If they wanted they could sell the front row tickets for $500 like Metallica does - but they don't...
The Police were charging upwards of $500 for tickets last summer....
You are also over looking that Kanye West commands a 7-figure pay day, and Jack Johnson gets mid 6-figures.
The average ticket price for Bonnaroo this year is $230 x 80,000 = $18.5 million. Thats just on ticket revenue - forget about tshirts and whatever they are taxing vendors....
It begs the question = Why are ticket prices up 15% this year?
a few things to add: Tool ticket prices have almost doubled since their Lateralus tour. I saw my first Tool shows then and after ticketmaster fees and whatnot, it was around $40-$45. for the 10,000 Days tour, complete with shorter setlists, tickets were about $75. the venues they play range from outdoor amphitheaters, to places like the Orpheum in Boston (small theater with great sound). Tool puts on a GREAT show, but between Bonnaroo, Orpheum and about 3 other shows on that tour, I saw the same setlist every night with the exception of a show I saw at the Tweeter Center near Boston where they played Pushit.
Now as for the Police, the most expensive tickets were close to $200 on Ticketmaster and they sold out most places they played including Fenway Park which I was going to go to until I saw they were playing the Roo. For their set at the Roo last year, I was about 3 people away from the front of the stage. I looked up similar tickets to the Fenway show on Stubhub and they were going for about $4500 FOR ONE TICKET.
Just a few things about past headliners. Sorry that it wasnt really relevant to anything in this thread. LOL
my (floor) ticket price for Tool's Lateralus tour: $45 my (floor) ticket price for the first show I saw on Tool's 10,000 Days tour: 52.25 my (floor) ticket price for the second show I saw on Tool's 10,000 Days tour: 52.50
nearly doubled? I think not. It does depend on what city you go to though.

just pulled out to random ticket stubs for that tour:
Mansfield Friday Sept. 29, 2006: $48.00 plus a $10.75 fee, plus another $7.00 fee. Boston (Oprheum show) Sunday May 21 2006: Face value of $66.66 plus fees.
So you're right. It does vary. It may not have doubled since '02, but there has been a significant rise in ticket prices. thanks for pointing out my mistake. karma for you!
the difference is definitely covered by kanye and JJ, who both certainly demand much more cash money than WSP and the white stripes
remember, jj is already getting a headliner's check for coachella, which is VASTLY more expensive than roo (i went through the ticketbastard process, and the final price for coachella this year- 3 day pass plus camping- is $371!!! makes you think twice about complaining about ticket prices i guess....)tho bonnaroo has a greater capacity and does gross more $. It is safe to say that JJ is at worst making #4 money (if zep or some other crazy addition that he said wouldn't happen happens) since he is already 3rd billing. sadly, jj is probably a good deal more expensive than WSP.
also, whether we like it or not (i dont), kanye is one of the biggest music acts in the US today, as proven by his grammy's performance and awards. as far as the mainstream music industry is concerned, kanye is gold, so i guarantee he was pretty expensive. kanye has performed at many of the major festivals in US and Europe over the past few years: US: Roo, Coach, Lolla, Essence, Live 8, Bumbershoot, Live Earth EU: Roskilde, the Cool Jazz Fest, Quart, the Stockholm Jazz Fest though he's not even remotely as worthy, i think there is little doubt that he commands more money than the white stripes on the major festival market
the money left over from metallica/PJ went to cover the increase in price for kanye and JJ vs. WSP, and white stripes.
So what we have here, in my uninformed estimation, is a fest that spent slightly more this year on 4 headliners than it did last year on 3 headliners. The proof is in the poster, 4 names on the "headline". i think this means one of three things: 1)thursday night headliner (kanye) 2)what stage late night (kanye) 3)seriously upgraded which stage for big late night sets (long overdue!)
DMB ticket prices have gone up significantly in the last few years... which, sadly to say is rough, because after 15 shows... i don't really want to pay to see DMB anymore. i may be taking a break from DMB this summer...
price is not about quality, its about clout, and who your "people" are in the biz. in essence, the pay scale is determined by "mass appeal" JJ is headlining coachella ($370 for a "roo" experience)= expensive JJ is currently listed THIRD on the bonnaroo press release = $$$
even if they add another headliner, which has been flatly denied by Ashley Capps, JJ is still the #4 artist on the bill. in festivals, promotion and ticket sales are everything, so the way bands are listed is actually important. Im sure RP and AK are also pricier than their counter part, ben harper, on last years lineup. I also think pearl jam will make more money to headline a fest than they do when they play their normal tour venues, because pearl jam is a rare band that makes a conscious effort to keep their ticket prices down. when they are getting paid by a corporate festival promoter who divvies up the revenue among 100 artists, im sure they take every penny they can get.
im pretty sure they paid A LOT of money for kanye... i have no idea what he charges or what the going rate to see his show is, but you may want to factor him in

It would be nice to see them tour theaters around the country...but that hasn't happened since their early years...they've been playing arenas and ampitheaters for a long time now...the only small venue shows they have played in the last 15 years were either benefit shows, fanclub shows, or during the canadian tour in 05 where they played small cities that had no big arenas to play in
fan club tickets have generally been around $50 or so for the last few tours...I could pull out my ticket stubs but no way they are that cheap fanclub or otherwise
