Phil is a legend to those who know... maybe some people disregard the members of the Dead as "stoner hippies" and ignore them...
Mickey Hart has done fabulous things... do your musician friends look at you funny when you talk about him?
broaden your horizons... The Grateful Dead did more for the live music experience than what you think.
no one is trying to insult the phil or the dead here when we say he's only big in the jam scene. it's just the simple truth.
I know you weren't insulting anyone. I'm not that sensitive. I'm just sharing what I know.
Phil is a legend... and not just in the jam-scene... The Grateful Dead were legends before there WAS a jam-band scene. They are great musicians... period.
they were a crucial part of a cultural revolution.

hmm, im going to back the people who say "phil who".
i dont think its the majority of attendees, but its a mighty large percentage who will have no idea. the crowd gets younger and younger and the dead become a distant memory, musically speaking. i doubt there are many there who dont know the dead in some capacity - but to know the names of the members aside from jerry...
That's more or less the case. Say Phil Lesh and a lot of people will just say "Who?" But when you say he's from the Grateful Dead, those same people will say "Oh, cool!"

Then tell us who the hip hop late night will be if Kanye doesnt have a late night set? Talib and Lupe are good but do not have the draw to have that many fans for a late night show unless they were getting ready for Kanye.
The last few years have been showcasing at least a hip-hop stage/tent/whatever during the late night festivities, and so far Kanye has in tow Daft Punks light team (remember the lovely lighted pyramid), Jim Henson's puppetry, animatronic robots on stage, and who knows what else. Superfly would be absolutly stupid to have him anywhere near light. He will be a night/late night show...period. End of discussion.
Have you even thought there may be different stage setup this year instead of the conventional 5 stage setup (main stages I mean)? There are a lot of what ifs and we will know in May where everyone will be playing.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
I really hate to break it to most of you, but the only member of the Dead that 98% of American knows of is Jerry.
I didn't know of Phil Lesh or Bob Weir till last year. I'm sure a lot of Bonnaroo's population this year will be about the same. Keep in mind, this isnt the Bonnaroo of 4 years ago. This is a multi-genre, multi-denominational fest. And a lot of the original jam band kids are avoid it now to go to other that don't have the evil Metallica or Kanye West on the lineup.
I would say theres a good chance that 50+% of Bonnaroo this year probably won't know who Phil is.
four nights of what stage headliners solves this problem pretty well right? I have said this from the beginning...
and kanye is a much bigger name than phil lesh. a horrible reality, but reality nonetheless. a great example of the utter $hit pile that is over-hyped, commercial, mainstream music.

I'm quite sure that at least 90% will know Kanye.
i would say 80/% will have at least heard of pihl and 100% will have heard of kanye, but phil will still get a bigger stage.

yup... commercial and mainstream $hit... blech.
I might have a weird perspective, I found Phil first and then worked backward to appreciate the Dead... I just lurve him and want others to do the same

I've said this a dozen times before, and I'll say it again. If you think they are sticking Kanye in a tent, you're crazy.
Regardless of what percentage of the Bonnaroo population knows who Phil Lesh is, Kanye is still billed higher than him. AC/Superfly simply wouldn't put their #4 billed artist in a tent, that would be a waste of money. Also, I think some of you are overestimating the capacity of the tents. Which Stage holds 30,000-40,000 people. Kanye will draw (at the very least) a crowd this size. A huge part of the draw for Kanye is his "Glow In the Dark" theme, why would they put him in a tent, where the stage is barely off the ground, and visibility is poor? It would be a shame if only 5,000 people could actually see his theatrics. Furthermore, I'm confident that his set-up will not fit on any of the stages that are inside the tents. Those stages are not very big, and I highly doubt they could contain a bunch of Muppet creatures. We know that Kanye is arriving at Bonnaroo on Saturday, whether or not that is actually the day he plays has yet to be determined.
I mean, let's run through the scenario some people have proposed . . . If it really were Kanye versus Phil, what do you think most people would do? Well, let's think about it. Kanye would probably be from 12-1:30 or 2, Phil from 12-3 or 4. I'd venture to say that most people would go see most of Kanye's set, knowing that they can still get a solid two hour of Phil. If this were actually the case, there would probably be 40,000 people or so trying to crowd around "That Tent" . . . it would not only be wayyyy over capacity, but dangerous.
Well like I said it was announced Phil is late night on Which Sat. So if he is not in a tent he is not at night, and that would really suck.

2/27/2008 11:15:49 AM The Phil Lesh & Friends and My Morning Jacket performances will be special late night shows on the Which Stage! Following the tradition of historic past performances from artists such as The Flaming Lips, Primus, and Trey Anastasio, these epic performances have been known to last until the early signs of morning. Look for more details coming soon!

I really dont think its as out-of-the-question as most think that Kanye play a late-night set on the What Stage. Maybe starting around 1-ish. They could set up a lot of Kanye's stuff before Pearl Jam, because their set really isnt filled with a bunch of extra stuff. It's really more a straight-forward show. Aside from that, much of the stuff could be set up in the morning, even before anyone starts playing. If you'll remember, much of the Flaming Lips set was already built into the stage Saturday.
I really think Kanye on the What stage is very possible. Certainly more probable IMO than him being in a tent.

Sunday
Which Stage - Kanye West - 8:15 to 9:45 What Stage - Jack Johnson - 9:30 to 12
Wait for it.
this is definately do-able, but i always felt like sundays were more for the jam-bands and bonnarooians who keep coming back just for the festival, ya know? A lot of people leave Saturday and Sunday morning which opens up a nice, comfortable setting for alot of the jam goers and others. I don't know though, anything is possible and i can't wait to see how this all works out.

Wolfman . . . I'd gladly accept your wager.
Chandler . . . I agree it is more likely that they would but Kanye on What than in a tent. However, I still don't think it's very plausible. As I understand it, part of the reason they don't use the main stage for latenight is because it is a noise issue for the surrounding homes. Also, the use of Which Stage latenight in itself is a special occasion. Just two years ago they only had the tents going latenight, the year before that they only used Which stage for Trey latenight. I'd be suprised if they expanded latenight to include What stage as well.
Mello . . . yea, Sunday has usually been a "jam" friendly day. But this year looks like a change of pace. I mean, look at the two biggest acts we have confirmed to play Sunday - Plant/Krauss and Jack Johnson. Also, recall the White Stripes last year. If you ask me, they are the most comparable act to Kanye this year. Obviously not in the musical sense, but in their draw and popularity - note that both are billed 4th for their respective years. Last year the Stripes played on Sunday from 7:15 to 8:45; and for the first time that I know of, there was an overlap with a headliner (WSP started at 8:30). I feel like if they put the White Stripes on Sunday, they'd have no problem doing it for Kanye.

I don't know why I'm so concerned with when Kanye is playing, I don't even plan on seeing him. I guess it's because I know I will have lots of room to rock out at whatever he conflicts with. And because it is the most interesting unsolved mystery about the schedule. I love schedule projection.
Post by melloashello on Apr 7, 2008 20:42:54 GMT -5
yeah, this year anything is really possible and with the white stripes overlapping last year, i could see kanye possibly playing Sunday. I guess we will just have to wait and see to solve the puzzle.
Gotta say I'd be just fine without a hip hop stage at all. I like and listen to almost anything but it's not my genre. That being said, if Kanye is in competition with anyone else I will likely see the anyone else. If he's the only game in town I don't know what I will do, maybe watch part of the set, maybe take a nap, just depends on the time. I am bummed though, I was hoping he'd play Thursday night and then we'd be done with it. Oh well....
I don't think it will be a "Glow in the Dark" tour. I think that Bonnaroo would be advertising it as such if it were. Like we all knew the Flips show last year was an UFO show. If this was a Glow in the Dark show, we would know already.
Post by placidcasual79 on Apr 8, 2008 8:37:38 GMT -5
didnt they announce the UFO Flip's show quite a bit after the initial announcement? I cant remember... regardless i really dont care since im not going this year. Has anybody considered the possibility of Kanye doing a shorter set from 12-1:30 or maybe even earlier on the Which stage...then followed by Phil or MMJ? this seems possible to me.
^ I don't think they ever really announced the UFO, but they did announce that the Lips and String Cheese would be on Which stage. Either before or after that, someone saw the Flaming Lips live and talked to them, and they said they'd have the UFO at Bonnaroo, so that's how we found out on inforoo.
They won't have him play on the Which stage before Phil or MMJ...nobody really knows what they're gonna do. We humbly await the schedule.
