If he was THAT big with the 'roo crowd he would be a headliner.
... and if Phil Lesh was a bigger name than Kanye West, he would be higher than him on the lineup.
I didn't know whether Phil Lesh had been in the Grateful Dead or Phish until last year. I don't listen to jam or rap, but I definitely get the impression that Kanye is a bigger name than Phil-- not just in the general American population, but also in the festival-going demographic.
And Jack Johnson is bigger than both
Phil Lesh has earned the right to be wherever on the lineup he chooses. He is playing in a revered spot, saved only for those who will *bring it* to Bonnaroo. He's headlined multiple times at several festivals. If he wanted to headline this one he'd probably just have to say so. Besides, to a large extent headliners are for napping.
It will be interesting to see if your impression of Kanye's appeal to the festival-going public changes after Bonnaroo.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that since the beginning, I've been telling you that he's only showing up Saturday to guest with Lupe/Talib, and his show will not be until Sunday. (But BonnarooDetective, Pollstar says he's playing Saturday! BonnarooDetective his website says 6/14, he must be playing Saturday!)

How about Lupe indicating a start time of 4pm on his Myspace page?

I'm not sure what Lupe listing 4pm on his MySpace has to do with the fact that it looks like I might be right about the fact that Kanye is playing Sunday.
Technically Saturday late night WOULD be Sunday. I really hope Kanye's show is late night. If Muppets at Bonnaroo is wrong then baby I don't want to be right.

Now that we are all done being disappointed over the weak sauce announcement . . . can we talk about this? The board would have been buzzing about Kanye's schedule had it not been for the "big" announcement.

I'm pretty excited about his set, not gonna lie. I used to HATE Kanye, but I've been listening to his stuff lately and I'm pretty impressed. Plus the glow-in-the-dark stuff sounds AWESOME.
However, I would really either like to see him pre-headline (in the dark) so that it doesn't conflict with my latenight. As of now, the plan is to be dancing my bootay off with MSTRKRFT --> Tiesto until Sunrise
jmkm, Karma for Buckethead, i believe that Kanye will be forgotten in 45 years, contrary to Phil and the surviving memebers who are still making music, after some 40+ yrs.
That setlist is absolutely ridiculous!!! Im so excited for Kanye's show. If you have the chance to download the torrent for "Late Graduation" you should get it. Its a live show from Japan or somewhere I think. The energy is absolutely staggering. Theres no chance they put Kanye in a tent. I know in the grand scheme of things he's not so big but right now...2008. He's hands down the biggest current selling artist at Bonnaroo. Not to mention all his RECENT grammy wins. He's warrants a stage show. How about a Chris Martin cameo during Homecoming? Im sure I'll take guff for saying that. Say what you will about his cocky attitude, but he's right. There will be a time when you cant even talk about hip hop without mentioning his name. The reason people dislike him isnt because he's so cocky...its because his cockiness is completely warranted. This is a show Ive been waiting 4 or so years to see. So...if everyone dislikes him so much go watch wsp wank around in E or D or whatever key it is this year while Im head bobbing and bank head bouncing the night away with Ye'. Unfortunately Kanye wont have warren haynes come out and do john the revelator for the millionth time.
"But with my ego, I could stand here in a speedo and be looked at like a fracken hero"
"These haters be killing themselves, the wanna come and get the glory"

Kanye is a great performer and producer, but he's not too hot with his rhymes. Don't get me wrong, I will be at his show, dancing like wild. However, his egotism is not warranted IMO, I understand how common it is for hip hop artists and rappers to keep their name at the top - which is the same in every business - but you don't have to keep telling me about yourself and how I should be honored by your lateness, that you would even show up to this fake s h i t. So i'm gonna go ahead and go nuts, maybe go ape s h i t.
His MC'ing has gone from solid to atrocious, no doubt.
His claim is that when he goes outside of the states, dumbing down his flow works to larger crowds and that the last album is just a reflection of that.
But I sort of think he's running out of stuff to say. Graduation was easily his shallowest work yet...

Agreed. I like his production, but listening to him try to justify his MC'ing is hilarious.
