I downloaded xACT to convert my Flacs to wavs for iTunes. I just can't really seem to find a good source for torrents
I stumbled across a program called xld that will convert straight from flac to apple lossless. Apple lossless will save you the space over WAV and keep the lossless sound quality that you lose with mp3. by keeping the files in apple lossless you can still play them in itunes and your ipod as well as burn cd's without losing any sound quality.
I use isohunt.com for a general torrent search but bt.etree.org for live "trade friendly" music.

I've only been on oink for like 3 days, and its a godsend. In that time i've already downloaded 3.57gigs. Just recently i switched from azureus to utorrent, its not as much of a memory hog, and i like it. Before i just used isohunt and the like, and didnt think oink was that much better, but i was very wrong. If you are a somewhat experience bitorrenter, i suggest working on an invite, it really is that much better. They also have comic books, books, and apps. I've grabbed a few comic books off it too.

I'll look into it, thanks for the tip!
edit: Wow, that was a quick look! Without an invite there isn't much to see. I do like sites that hold you accountable for how much you seed though, makes for much faster downloads.
i just recently got oink and i am completely confused by it!! i have to upload to keep my ratio good..i know that.....but do i have to upload whole albums?? i don't keep full albums on my computer just because i never like EVERY song on an album and i try to keep as much space free as possible..especially when i already have 1300 songs and add more every day....

first of all read the rules about uploading albums, they have to be certain bit rates and can't be already on the stie, or in other words no duplicate uploads. there are plenty of other stipulations as well if you're gonne be uploading new material. When you download an album just let it seed until you have at least a .5 or 1 ratio with the torrent before you delete it off your hard drive. you need to allocate space on your hard drive for torrents you will download and be seeding or oink just isn't gonna work for you. that being said, Oink is a great resource but if you're just lookin for songs and not albums i recommend using emule, soulseek, or public torrent search engines.

If you are gonna upload anything yourself it must be a full album. I've uploaded one album and I just seed all the stuff I download. My ratio is 8.
for some reason im not getting my stuff to upload. i downloaded the hold steady album because it had lots of seeders and while it was downloading and for about 5 minutes after it ws done it was uploading good. now its just at zero though. i just joined and i dont wanna get a horrible ratio right off the bat. any advice?
you need to get something with alot of leechers and like one seeder, its more art than science really. and they can kinda be ratio nazis there, but they do give you like a 10 gig leeway. if you get in early on a big file and alot of people get on after you your ratio will go up. or just leave whatever you dl seed for a long time. every year on thankgiving an christmas they have holiday periods where you can dl as much as you want but not hurt your ratio and it still counts uploads. ive heard that software downloads can help your ratio too.
its anoying but it does ensure that the torrents stay seeded.

I just leave everything i download up to seed, so i have like 30 things seeding, and usually only like one of them il actually be seeding, but that keeps my ratio at about .4 right now, and im only at 4 gigs, so im golden on the rules, but its still not as high as i'd like. I agree its an art getting your ratio up on oink, but its not too hard to maintain.

Are you clever? If there are alot of other seeders then they are getting all the upload time, especially if you aren't clever. Just leave it up and you'll be able to upload some of it.

seeders are people who have the album and are seeding it , or uploading to people downloading. leechers are people downloading it. so the more seeders there are compared to leechers the more competition you have in uploading the file to the leechers. it's best to get files that have hardly any seeders with lots of leechers. but that is pretty much non existant on oink. best thing to do is download in moderation and just let what you have seed 24/7 until it reaches an acceptable ratio for that file.
I like to switch it up. If I'm wanting a whole album or discog, I'll go torrent (Azureus, or built in Opera torrent feature, a bad habit I'm trying to break but it's just sooo damn easy). If I just need a single song or two, I'll find an IRC mp3 room. Much less trouble then trying to find a decent torrent for one or two songs. The Collective Search Engine on Undernet is a godsend. If I can't find what I'm looking for there (which is rare), I'll fire up Shareaza which uses Gnutella 1 (the same network Limewire accesses), Gnutella2, and the ed2k P2P networks. I typically use Shareaza as last resort, as it can be the slowest and being a P2P network it can be a pain shifting through the fake files and such.

Thats the way to do it.
Im on a DSL line currently which I hate. Before this I always ran on Cable. Even while on Cable your upstream crawls. I guess it all depends upon your computer habits. I use to just let specificly strong torrents upload for days and it always worked for me. The only exception for me has always been Dimeadozen. For some reason Ive always had a terrible time seeding and leeching there.
BTW, anyone feel like sending me an invite to Oink. Ive never felt the need to get on there as everything that actually leaks on there is spread within an hour. Still, something Id like to have an account on. If someone wants to throw one my way itd be appreciated.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!

Oink isnt for finding the new leaks, its for being able to find pretty much anything you can imagine, and it actually having enough seeders to download it. You name it, its on oink. Plus, they have good sbd's. Unfortunatly i dont have an invite, but i remember someone having some, maybe Nol.
That's the big diff I've found with Oink, my DL's don't crap out 78% of the way because there are acutally seeders for the harder to find stuff I want.
EDIT: And I don't have any more invites at the moment either

I download live shows and live DVDs of shows from dimezdown.org. That site has a lot of great videos of shows, Lots of the euro fests are broadcast and I have downloaded many rips that are perfect and recorded by the actual camera people, not someone in the audience. Typically they are about 4 gigs but they always fit on a DVD.
All my albums are downloaded into a bag from the record store. People who only download albums make me sad.
Thats what i do, i'll download an album i dont even like, just to seed it.
good advice man. i was having trouble with my ratio because i was downloading old soundboards. i grabbed korn unplugged as soon as it was posted and it did allright. 2.5 or something ratio. but i was the first person to grab the new fountains of wayne when it posted last night and its given me over half a gig of upload and still going strong. so thanx for that tip. now i can start downloading again ;D
what is this "clever" all about? i read through the faq but i didnt see much about it

I didnt know about that clever thing, looks like too much of a pain for me, just leaving my stuff up to seed has me at a .66 ratio at almost 9gigs downloaded.
i use utorrent to dl i used to use azureous that is good also i notced someone already gave the answer about flac (frontend has plug in for winamp) foobar is also a good player, as for where i get my files i primarily use bt.etree.org or www.shnflac.net however www.gdlive.com dimeadozen and LMA (live music archive) are all great places as well.
