I'm not saying it's literally going to cause people to go out and copy cat this crime, but there will be shootings like this again, no matter what. This just gives those people a more brazen attitude that they can have their cake and eat it too.
Again, satisfying our curiosity, which is all showing the videos did...it was NOT news...was not worth ANY harm this caused to victims/families.
I'm obviously repeating myself now so it's probably time to give it a rest.
I respect all of your opinions on the matter and my point isn't to say YOU ARE WRONG. I just think these people have been through enough, and the positives don't come close to out-weighing the negatives in showing the videos.
I can decide what I need to watch all by myself. The news needs to report on the situation and I want them to be as comprehensive as possible. I'll decide it I want to watch or not.

and for the record, I didn't want to see it. When I did see it I had this immediate reaction, so it's not like I'm just jumping on the bandwagon. For what it's worth...

Why did you need to see it Knox? Why did anybody need to see it? How did it help you? Was it worth the anguish it has caused those that already are in a horrible spot.

It's up to the individual to decide what they need/don't need to see. It's not up to the news stations to decide for us. They showed it because I'm sure they felt a "need" to deliver what they consider was newsworthy.
I suppose it's up to each person to decide if it's what they need to see. What you need is different from what I need. If it bothers you (any individual), turn the channel. Of course the families and victims are going to be bothered by this, but if it were me, I would be bothered just the same by seeing ANY photo of him.
(I mean NO DISRESPECT to the victims and their families from my comments. I want to be clear of this! I'm even wearing their colors today!)

I didn't want to see it either. And actually I chose not to watch any of it on the news. I have seen his pictures online but otherwise I have avoided it.
Deathreau, do you disagree about all the bloody and shocking images we get from Iraq. Do you decide not to watch them too out of respect for those peoples families? Because if no, then this is definalty you jumping on the bandwagon with your torches going to burn down NBC. They were put in quite an awkward situation and i think they handled it how they should of.

I don't have to answer to anyone why I needed to see this. It is my own personal decision to view the material. If I didn't "need" to see it, then I wouldn't have watched it. Simple as that.

I think an image of him with guns holstered has quite a bit more impact than what is basically a mugshot.
My point with my statement quoted was to say that the families and victims are going to be bothered by him no matter what. Like I said, if it were ME, then I wouldn't want to see his photo no matter what....guns or no guns.

No one needed to see those pictures or that video. If anyone feels that they did, ask yourself for what reason? If it's to fulfill a curiosity, that's not a "need" that's a want. Discussion on the topic is necessary and questions have to be addressed about security, but the criminal killed himself so there will be no justice served in this violent murder spree. These images do not provide evidence for a trial, so the only purpose to show them is to shock. The people who made the decision to release them only have money as a motive in the form of ratings for the television programs that they produce.
I am so grateful that we have a community of people brought together by bonnaroo who seek to help one another and spread love and peace for a few brief beautiful days each year. This tragic event serves to show how incredible that really is.

My stance as of right now is as follows:
I also wish the news devoted more time to the victims than the psychotic, heartless killer. We all know he was extrememly screwed up, anyone who would mercilessly slaughter as many innocent people as he did had serious issues. I don't see why the news feels the need to keep reminding us of how screwed up he was. Lets hear more stories of people like Liviu Librescu who exemplify courage and the best of the human spirit.

Personally I chose not to look at or watch those kind of images either. But that is just me. It is disrespectful to their families and the people who loved them period.
Don't bash people who wanted to see these videos. People deal with things differently. If they hadn't shown them at all I think the question "Why?" would be nagging at people for a long time.
These events are horrifying. NBC wrestled with the decision to air the footage and were commended for their restraint, then bashed for showing it at all. It was a double edged sword. They were screwed either way. It was newsworthy if not disturbing...

I certainly hope what I'm saying isn't coming across as bashing people that want to see it. That certainly isn't my intent, and I apologize if that's how anybody took it.
I think that some of the family members may want or need to see the information. I would like to see the inside of the murderer's head and any references to movies or other things that may have influenced him to act out. I don't like secrets or witholding information. I want to know everything. I thought NBC did a good job. They showed it on the day it happened, but they haven't continued to show the images over and over again for days afterward. Once I see the whole horrible scenario, I can begin to deal with the horror and begin to move on better.
Remember, everyone has a different way to grieve and begin to heal. That's the beauty of the remote control or the on/off knob. To each his own.
I think the one of the best ways we can show support for the Hokies and their families is to wear their colors, maroon and orange.
On another note, we are getting a very controlled and washed down version of the Iraq war compared to the coverage of the Vietnam war. I think that is why there was a much larger social issue at the time that ultimately resulted in the war ending whether the fellas in the White House wanted to do it or not. I feel that the anti war demonstrations all over the country and particularly in Washington helped bring that one to a close. Big business profits when there is a war going on. That is why the Iraq war is washed down for the evening news here.

I just don't see why anybody would need to see it. Of course it's your decision, and if you don't want to share your thought process, no problemo. I was just asking.

You can't say anyone should or should not NEED or WANT to see the video. It isn't up to any one of us to decide for another human whether or not the footage is shown, and if the footage being show is right or wrong. It was news, and personally, I want my news to be as comprehensive as it can be. I want to be shown every angle, even if that angle is directly from the murderer's lips.
Like I've said before, if you don't want to see it, don't watch it! Don't decide for anyone else if it is right or wrong.

Showing images of dead soldiers in Iraq is akin to showing images of the victims being carried out of the buildings, which I don't necessarily have a problem with.
Showing this sicko with his guns holstered and spewing his rhetoric would be akin to showing the insurgents celebrating the murder of a mass quantity of our troops and telling us how and why we deserved it. It would encourage jihadists around the globe - including in our country - and torture the families of the slain soldiers. I definitely would have a problem with that.
EDIT: And there probably are videos like this that are shown on places like Al Jazeera (sp) but are NEVER shown in the US. Right?

I understand your point.
I guess the biggest thing I disagree with you on is whether or not this is actually news. Personally, I think it's just some sicko's wet dream being played out for the whole world to see. The important details from his manifesto and video could have been reported by the fbi without us seeing it.

What about the multiple videos of Osama bin Laden that come out periodically? Are those wet dreams? Do you watch those? What about the day after 9/11 where they showed people celebrating the attacks?

I understand your point as well, but I believe that if NBC hadn't shown the footage, they would have been ridiculed for not showing it. Either way, people would have been upset. It is their responsibility, in my opinion. It is up to the individual as to whether they watch it or not.

Bin Laden video's are news since it's an on-going ordeal. What this guy said meant nothing since he's already done.
Showing the people celebrating did show us that there are people around the world that agreed with what happened. I think that was informative and helped give us a view of the world at large. Showing this guy did nothing but tell us what we already knew....he's a wacko.
Good points though. I know I'm treading a fine line.

I agree with you on this. I do wish I could see more of the victims and hear about their lives...instead of reading it at the bottom of the page on the scroll bar while his face takes up 1/2 of the screen!
