The hubby and I are gonna quit on July 1st, the day that our legistlators have set to raise the taxes on cigs 42 cents a pack (for education, nonetheless!).
At first I was p*ssed that ONLY smokers should have to pay to better the state's public education, but then it hit me...these guys are shootin' themselves in the foot! When they raise the cig taxes, more folks are gonna quit and then they'll have to find another lame way to "fund public education" in TN! Phew! Okay, done with my personal "rant".
The MAIN reason that I should quit is this: my mom passed away in November 2005 after a loooonngg battle with lung cancer (it had eventually spread to her bones and brain). Not only was she the most beautiful, loving, sharing friend I and many others would have the pleasure of knowing, she was a true "flower child" of the 60s and, unfortunately, a smoker for almost 40 years. She eventually quit with the help of patches and Wellbutrin, and she repeatedly asked/pleaded that my dad and I quit....and, well, I'm ashamed to say that I didn't before she passed.
So, in honour of my beautiful mother and Bonnaroo (which she would have LOVED!), I'm going to stop this smokin' cig crap on Sunday, July 1st, and I'm sooooo glad to know that I can come here for the support I'll so surely need.
my roomate just told me she has gone all day without a cig so far!!!!! We move today into the building next to us, and we are going to institute a no smoking rule.

Don't blame ya!! I'll be MORE than happy/glad to get the smell outta my house!! Yeck!!!!
Happy, you're amazing.....keep it up. I hope you're feeling better from your bonnaflu and bonnabronchitis. Remember, I was sick with "something" for almost 6 weeks after I quit. Don't get discouraged. Lung illnesses make you extremely tired, so don't begin to feel like you're a weenie, if you are tired for a while. That's why the doc so wisely told you not to go back to work for a while, so please rest up and get well so you can have happy days ahead. You'll be smelling more prettyful, too. :-)
Lucy (I presume) that is so great that you were able to go to a huge party that lasted 4 days and not smoke. You are a stronger woman than I.

Thanks!
It just got to that breaking point for me with cigarettes. I just really went over it in my head about how little sense it made that I had been smoking for this long. Its such a weird routine. Smoke when your mad, when your happy, nervous, after you eat, when you wake up, on and on. I realized that pretty much every activity of my day was accomponied by inhaling hot poisonous fumes, and I willingly and knowingly spent money on it. And the leaves in the cigs most people smoke being more radioactive than plants at Chernobyl, that's enough to motivate even the most devoted smoker.

Last night I was hanging out with a bunch of friends who know i'm not smoking anymore and we were outside hanging out and my friend who was smoking right next to me (i know, what a friend right?) had to go inside to get something and said "hey scott, hold on to this for a sec while I run inside" and handed me his lit cig and ran off and I just stood there with it in my hands and contemplated taking a drag and then realized eff that and decided to do him a favor too and just toss it on the ground and stomped on it. Pretty surprised in myself that I didn't take advantage of a "half cig cheat" or something like that.
strumnscott and mikearoo.... you are doing great. I was not strong enough to be around my smoking friends at that time. I had to go into seclusion for a month. But I had a 3 year old to occupy most of my time back then. 20 years ago.
This year we went to Bonnaroo together plus a couple of her friends. I don't smoke, but now she smokes a little. I wish I could get her to quit!
I am so amazed at how well everyone is doing on here.
Day 12, i did make it yesterday. My roomate even went to sleep and left her cigs on the table. Looking all delicious, like Marlboro Menthol Lights should look. I took one out of the pack and smelled it, and it didnt smell delicious. Usually, they smell like heaven on a stick, but last night it smelled halfway like funk. So i said, 'bleh', put it back and went to bed. Actually she is still asleep, and i just remembered they are sitting right behind me on the coffee table. I havent even looked at them.
awesome awesome. This weekend was rough. its 830 sunday night . . . . i have been moving since 830 friday night. Moving next door must have walked back and forth about 500 times. I am finally done. I have wanted a cigarette real bad. Everything else hasnt given me a craving, even drinking, but man, moving sure did. But i did not

Karma to you, man. Not smoking while moving had to be rough!

I definitely hear ya on the moving thing. I was helping my girlfriend move into an apartment today 30 min across town. Every time on that drive in between I wanted to have a smoke but was able to resist every time.
i sincerelly wish you all of you the best of luck and karma to you all (eventually) . im very anti tobacco, seems like such a waste in every sense of the word.

The weekend was rough, but I'm not gonna lie... today at work is the hardest day I've had yet. So much to do, such little motivation. Only been here 3 hours and if this had been a week ago I'd probably have taken atleast 5 smoke breaks by now

Rough day today. Got an unexpected C on my first exam, and I was just kinda annoyed at everything for some reason. It seemed like everyone I saw had a cigarette. Grrrrr. Gotta remember it's almost been a month. I thought I was past cravings, but I guess not.
