Last Saturday I gave up smoking. Just wondering if anyone has any helpful tips, so I don't suffer at Bonnaroo!! It's not that bad, I'm just worried about when I'm around a bunch of smokers. I'm taking some herbs, and smoking herbal cigs when I need that hand to mouth, but other than that cold turkey.

my smoking stops after the 'roo, i promised my fiancee, and its a promise i will keep. the hardest part about stopping for me is driving, i sit in tooooo much traffic, and its what helps me thru, in the past, i just bite on a straw, and it does the trick.

Yeah, I promised my fiancee I'd quit when we got together (four years ago next friday I figured I'd better do it before we get married. I'd feel like kind of a jerk if I didn't. Aside from all the logical reasons, health, corporations, etc. Herbal cigarettes are saving my life right now but I'm worried that when I'm at bonnaroo with all my smoking friends the cravings will really kick in.

I hear ya Hoodoo....Quitting before Roo is a bit tough. One last hurrah before the plunge is how I'm doing it.

I quit almost 2 years ago cold turkey but I did chew a lot of gum during that time and that helped. I did however gain about 15 lbs after quitting.........

^ On my fourth day I went over to my friends house to drink (both heavy smokers) told them I quit, and they both lit up within 5 mins. I remember doing that exact thing when someone would tell me they'd quit, I'd just think "Man do I need a cig, now!" I got through it though.
I wont say there weren't times that I was shaking my leg like crazy, but I feel like once I defeated that I'm in the clear.
Plus telling everyone I know that I did quit helps, cause after all my friends say they're proud of me and can't believe I did it, well there's no going back after that.
Good luck to you - I often say I don't smoke enough to justify buying the cigarettes (I go through a pack a week.) But at 'roo I know I willsmoke alot more.
When I have quit in the past - the hardest part for me also was driving - but once I got over that - it was all good!

I hear that. I knew I'd done it when I went to a party and everyone is inside the Garage smoking and playing pool, and then I suddenly noticed, I not only didn't have the urge, I hadn't thought about a cigarette the entire time. Only reason it had even dawned on me then is because someone about to make a pool shot asked me to ash their cig.
It's a good feeling to know you're not paying Big Tobacco to shorten your life anymore.
Honestly start back up and quit after Roo. You won't be able to enjoy yourself at the fest. You'll crave one and then think about having one and not enjoy the show because tha is all you will think about and then you will have one and feel guilty. So if you can just tell yourself, after Roo I am done for good, you will be fine.

Eff Big Tobacco! The night that I quit, I was partaking in some extracurricular activities, if you will , and my fiancee told me about this article he read stating that the tobacco in cigarettes was a lot more radioactive that the leaves at Chernobyl. That stuck with me the whole night, needless to say. I kept thinking about how crazy it would be if someone went to Chernobyl, ground up some of the leaves on the plants and smoked them. If you want to check out this article here it is: www.itwire.com.au/content/view/12699/1066/
I would definitely agree about the three day hump. It's all about breaking the mentality of being a smoker now, but in a way for me it's the hardest part.
ive only ever tried quitting once. it lasted for 3 weeks and i gained 20 lbs. (i pretty much ate EVERYTHING i could get my hands on.) call it vain, but i just wasnt ready to be fat yet. ive decided to give it one more shot.... AFTER roo. there are too many extracurricular activities that i chain smoke while doing.
good luck. id probably invest in a couple bags of hard candy to suck on at roo. i like the little red and white peppermint jammers. when my dad quit he ate hundreds of the individually wrapped fireballs, and still swears by them years later. chapstick was a necessity bc i chew on my lips when im mid-crave. and gum. lots of gum.
3 day hump, it must be scientific. I don't smoke cigs, but I do smoke other things. I had to quit a few times in college for sports, and the first 3 days were brutal! Thought I was the only one to notice...
hmm well if the other things you smoked were the things i'm thinking of, perhaps herbal remedies...then I can't see why a 3 day hump would be in there since it's not physically addictive.
Not Smoking cannibus for 3 days. And not smoking Cigarettes for 3 days.

A lot of people have warned me about gaining weight, so whenever I get an intense craving I go for a run or hike. Takes my mind off of it, and there is no chance of gaining weight.

I have also set Bonnaroo as my "quit date." I am planning on having my last cigarette in Manchester and then quitting cold turkey. It's not even worth it trying to quit before then because God knows I'll take three steps inside Centeroo and light one up immediately. But once it's over, I'm done. I want to get a good month smoke free before Pitchfork so I'm ready for that challenge. I'm a secret smoker, and frankly I'm tired of it. I hate myself every time I get half way through a cigarette. I know I'll enjoy it with a few beers at the Roo, but when I get back, no more. My health is just too important to me. And I'm going to try to replace cigarettes with exercise. We'll see how that goes.

i started smoking at 13 and i quit at 17 and i was smoking way more then a 15 year old should be smoking i think it got to 2 packs a week. well one day i was like wow im hacking up sick ass s#it everyday so i quit cold turkey im only 19 but i never went back. i believe quitting cold turkey is the only way. you might feel shitty for a few days but after that its easy the smell of smoke doesnt even seem appealing anymore it just smells horrible. i sucks cause all my friend that started at the same time as me are still doing it and they want to quit but they cant. hope that helped

Thanks everyone for the support!! This thread is helping, when I get a craving I check it. I'm soooo glad I quit before roo cause I know when I partake in extracurricular activities, I will feel good about myself. I am not saying I will quit after I clean the bedroom or after finals, I f-ing DID IT!!! And all you inforooers that are quiting after roo, I'm here for ya, I'll have it down by then.

So many people are quiting after bonnaroo! I just wanted to add my name to that growing list. I bought my last packs, I'm going to live them up then never buy another!
