I'm pretty neutral about John Mayer, but I was reading an article in my local Village Voice publication, and I had to chuckle about this quote, which in an article about the rock hall, and who should and shouldn't be in it.
John Mayer Mayer is to Hendrix what Bolton was to Otis.
Anyone who has heard "Your Body Is a Wonderland" knows that this guy is a total hack -- a sterile cum stain on the legacy of rock music. His lyrics are little more than calculated come-ons. His guitar work is better tagged "easy listening" than "rock." I wouldn't even compare the creep to Christopher "Sailing" Cross. The dude even has an on-and-off-again relationship with Jessica Simpson, which makes her look like the idiot.

John Mayer is actually a freaking great blues guitar player, it's just that radio crap that everyone hears that make them think differently. Just watch this:
And I think John Mayer is more to SRV, then SRV is to Hendrix. I wonder who is next...
I too thought john Mayer sucked, and then I saw him in concert and became a convert. He is quite talented live; like many other musicians the stuff that somehow gets on the radio ends up being the corniest songs from the CD.
also i've read where he's said that he even thinks "body is a wonderland" and that other song he had are dumb songs.... but they made not have to work a day job and now he can focus on actually making good music
he was like "if i have this ability to write cheesy pop songs that women the world over will cream their pants for, and i can get rich off it, might as well"
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

I went to a small club back in 2000 or something like that. Anyway, he was the opening act for the man I went to see. His set blew me away!!! He was so good with the crowd and I actually ended up liking him better than the guy I went to see in the first place!
Since then I have been a fan. I look forward to the direction he's taking now...

He came to Roanoke a while back, and i had the choice of either seeing him or going to see RHCP and Gnarls Barkley. Sadly, I chose RHCP and Gnarls.... I probably made a bad choice
The first time I saw him, i didn't even know it was him. We had really nosebleed seats for the Stones and we were like who is this guy opening for them, he's good? Midway into the Stones set we found out it was John Mayer. Saw him about a year later with Sheryl Crow and had far better seats to really see him at work, which was very cool.

didn't happen to be glen phillips, did it? it was around 2000 that i was turned on to john mayer (through the power that is the internets). on a whim, a friend & i drove to philly to check him out at a small club. amazing... john mayer & an acoustic guitar. chilled in the audience for glen's set, signed a cd for me. then, rather quickly, he was all over the place. by 2002 or thereabouts, i couldn't stand the crowds anymore

No...it was for someone I don't want to say cause it's embarrassing.
The club was in Winston-Salem, NC....a place called Ziggy's. If I knew then who I was 2 feet away from, I would have taken a picture!!! (I even told him he did a great job!!!)

mayer is a great guitarist but he used the cheapest scheme in the music business: gather attention by starting off playing the poppiest of pop. pretty lame, i have little respect for that kinda thing. rock and roll hall of famers start at rock bottom, and go through a painstaking journey to make it to the top, and their passion is made crystal clear through thier songs

I read that too, and i personally think its a genius idea. I'd always heard he was a great guitarist, and i even enjoyed his early pop stuff, wouldn't have seen him though. Then i saw him play with The Headhunters in 05', and i am definitely a believer. I think even with all the hype he does get, this guy is underrated.
I'm kind of on the fence on John Mayer....I think he has talent as a guitarist and he has written some decent songs (wonderland not withstanding) but he just seems to be into the celebrity side of things as much or more than the music and that doesn't sit well with me....he is muy high profile and likes the spotlight a bit too much....he is very saavy but that can bite a really good musician in the long run. I'd like to see him work more on the music and less on the image for a while.....then I might believe he was on the right path....

Since when is that hard to do???
Regardless of who he sleeps with, how often certain videos and songs are played on whatever channels & stations, John Mayer is one of my favorites. I like that he's my age; I feel like I relate to his music & ideas in more than just the smarmy, romantic ways. 1983 was always a favorite year; I have personally traveled Georgia's highways and asked "Why?" many a time during my years-long quarter-life crisis. ;D I like his lyrics. I like his guitar-playing. And, yes, I have enjoyed his looks from the early boyish, clean-cut phase to the more recent Jack White-in-a-Tim Burton-movie-with-Michael Jackson's-fashion-stylist look. ;D He's hot. But he is an excellent musician!! So what if I'm in his target demographic audience? The music makes me happy!! And, ha, I'm "...home alone on a Friday," so "Love Song For No One" has now taken over my brain. ;D ....I could have met you in the sandbox........... Coincindentally, I will be seeing him one month from today. Woohooo!
Another John Mayer story. In 2002 I was traveling the East Coast helping to open new stores for my company and train managers. we went to Richmond (me and two other female coworkers) and they were humongous JM fans. We listened to his stuff over an over in the rental car and I didn't tire of it. Anyway the story part is one of the girls saw him in concert at a small venue right in front of the stage and said "his crotch was right there at eye level... I wanted to drop his man toys in my mouth like a mama bird feeding her baby." I know I know, but now every time I see him I think of this coworker standing below at the ready.
i went and DLed several torrents from him the other night. I had one album from him in my itunes, i DLed a live one, a specail sessions, and his latest studio album. havent listened to anything yet though.
Hmmm, that's interesting....I could make a few of those next time I change out my guitar strings and make a few extra $$...I mean, they all look EXACTLY the same.....????
Hmm. I enjoy John Mayer on occaision, although I do prefer his newer, bluesier stuff to Wonderland. I saw him about 6 or 7 years ago at a little music festival in Birmingham, and it was a great show...tons of fun. I am debating going to see him in August. It's him and Ben Folds is opening for him (why I don't know, Ben Folds is a great musician himself), but it's 60 bucks ...I need more convincing!

you said it yourself, Ben Folds is a great musician. So is John Mayer. I saw Ben Folds this last spring and he rocked the house, literally. He played this note that was so low on his custom keyboard that the stage and even the walls of the building were vibrating. it was absolutely nuts. He called it the "brown note" because it makes people shit their pants ;D
bamadancer, try and check out a more recent live performance of john mayer, and make the decision then. Its like anything he did on Live Earth, id be there.
