Here's a little test to see how you really stand politically. It's divided into a grid of right/left/libertararian/authoritarian. Pretty cool. Thought it might be fun to see where everyone stands.
You can take it (and see where some historical figures stand) at:

Economic Left/Right: -5.50 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.18
smack dab in the midle of Left/Libertarian. Surprise, there's only a few long-shot candidates that are even close to sharing my views. No wonder I feel left out of the American political process.

Studies show most Americans are a little left and south of center when asked about issues but we've been told we are conservative so often we believe it. Therefore candidates run far more right and north than the public.
I love that this survay includes the libertarian/authoritarian axis. What I find interesting is that the Republican party tries to associate the right with Libertarianism and the left with Stalin type authoritarian government but in reality it's the opposite. Most liberals are libertarian (for personal freedom) and most conservative lean authoritarian (willing to give up rights for safety) There's actually a big void in the upper left and lower right for Americans.

Quite true. Elections are rarely about what a candidate actually stands for, but rather about hype, big names and big money. I find it ironic that most conservatives demonize liberals like us by calling us commies, when nobody thus far has wound up in the liberal/authoritarian quadrent (which would encompase true Communist values), while most conservative candidates fall into the same quadrent as the fundamentalist muslim governments like Iran who we are told are "evil." And while most individual conservatives think of themselves as Libertarians, they blindly support candidates who are systymatically eroding out liberties in the name of safety.

I really don't understand what that means but Ghandi was around the same area on the little graph thingie
In a nutshell Upper Left - Authoritative liberal - Your Typical Communist - Total government control of business, art, social services.
Lower Left - Libertarian Liberal - Does not believe in total gov't control, but does believe the gov't has a social responsibility to care for some needs of the people. Personal freedoms are very important, but so is responsibility. This is where, as Troo pointed out, most Americans actually fall if you only look at issues, and not surprisingly is where everyone here who took the test has wound up.
Lower Right - Conservative Libertarinism - Favors little or no gov't intervention in everyday life. No taxes, no social welfare, free market can solve everything. Gov't should also stay entirely out of our personal lives. A true libertarian conservative would favor legalizing drugs, prostitution, gambling, pornography, abortion and gay marriage. Not surprisingly, very few conservatives are true libertarians, though many claim to be.
Upper Right - Shares the free market, no tax ideology of the libertarian, but does believe the gov't should legislate morality, usually from a religious standpoint. This would cover most Non-Communist dictatorships, esp. religious fundamentalists and military despots. And this is where all of our major political candidates fall. We truely do have a one-party system.

An excellent summary, Stallion. I'd only add one point on the Lower Left (Libertairian Liberal): this is where most flavors of Anarchism (especially those that call for no federal goverment at all) would fall.

True. Thanks for the catch. Anarchists would be at the extreem negative on the vertical scale.

Awesome summary thank you! I tend not to really take much notice of politics because I am not a citizen and can't vote, so that is why I am so clueless.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
Your political compass Economic Left/Right: -7.12 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.62
I'll admit, didn't think I'd be THAT far in any corner of the chart... interesting. Guess if it's gotta be in ANY corner I'm glad it's that one! Thanks for a great survey.

Revolution, anyone?
Great summary.
I'd just add that basically the right/left is an economic scale with all the way right being absolutely no business regulations (no env, safety, wage, etc) all the way left is completely regulated (no private business ownership, wages/prices fixed by gov't)
The up/down is a political/ personal freedom scale. All the way up is dictator (no vote, no rights). All the way down is no centralized gov't (everyone do want they want/ anarchy)
My feelings are that you err on the side of personal freedom though a centralized gov't is necesaary to maintain order. And free enterprise capitalism and the profit motive are necessary but businesses should be regulated and unonized so that they work for the good of the majority.
As I said earlier, Meg, most Republicans are not authoritarians, only the Republican Party is. That's why you never see the Libertarian/Authoritarian scale mentioned, just economic one. Neither party wants you to view them as to how they affect your personal freedom.
