My 32nd birthday is approaching.
My best friend is a 22 year old ex-goth hipster who seems to be making tremendous strides in cultural/musical/mental expansion. As a (hopeful) fluke, I suggested that he spend some time with my friend LUCY when he comes down here for my b-day next month. He blew my mind and accepted my invitation.
He is kinda square but a great and open-minded guy who seems to be on a quest to broaden his horizons and, quite possibly, grow-up some in the process.
I am overwhelmingly honored by his trust in me when it comes to guiding his voyage.
My question: What music/movies/games/whatever should I provide for him? His favorite bands include Marilyn Manson, Tori Amos, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. While I want to cater to his tastes to some degree, I'm also hoping to open his eyes/ears/mind to some of other amazing stuff. I can tell you right now that he's not terribly "jam friendly", so I guess I'm asking for some relatively unorthadox suggestions here.
Any input or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Ohhh, a Jim Jarmush flick would be excellent. Dead Man with Johnny Depp.
Bet you some corn he's never seen it.
Actually, he is an enormous Depp fan and he LOVES that movie! (he is the first person to make me think about what color Johnny's suit actually is in that film.)
....And while I know that he would love it, I'm looking to open his eyes to some things he is totally oblivious to.
(I still owe you some karma though

Pink Floyd... Fearless... or anything really Gone With the Wind... Trust me Fantasia... the dinosaurs have made me cry walk around outside at some point... hopefully there's a storm mood lighting is key carbonated beverages
and the three most important rules: 1) you can not fly 2) fire hurts 3) before doing anything really cool... ask a relatively in control third party
if you are doing it so you are still wide-eyed when the sun comes up make a playlist on your computer, with the window shades open and watch the world come alive
if you do it during the day you should go for a bike ride

Personally, I don't enjoy movies when hanging with Lucy. I don't have the attention span for it, and need to be doing something more interactive.
I was like that for more than a decade until I started looking at movies as the individual actors' preformances and not as any cohesive narrative. I'm the poster-boy for short attention spans but, disecting individual preformances in individual scenes (see Christopher Guest) works wonders for me. You know what I mean. Observation can be incredible!

Though, if your are in a room with DVD capability, it's not bad to have something on... something very visual that could work well with the sound off and random music on... some sort of cartoon may be in order... or just flip around the TV, and see what works out... nothing better than making your own unplanned music videos
Especially living in Atlanta. That movie can be disected all day. Do a little research on the making of it first. George Cukor was a master of detail... the costumes are AMAZING!!!... the sets are phenomenal (they filmed the burning/clearing of the back lot of the studio when the shot "the burning of ATL"... King Kong's gates fall as the wagon drives by).... OMG! It's Vivian Leigh... Clark Gable... both of them perfect... just an iconic piece of film

true, but if you don't say Pink Floyd in this context lightening will strike you dead
Actually, I had a 'beautiful experience' on "Saucer Full Of Secrets". For me, this might well be the path to enlightenment. However, I don't think he'll get much out of it. We are a decade apart in age and more than a universe apart in mind-set. That's exactly why we get along so well. Friends should challenge and question you and yours. Right?
While I'm hoping/praying to open his eyes to "colors never seen before", I also want him to understand that he can discover incredible and beautiful paths for himself.
When I think about it, this could be the most benevolent experiment ever or a horrible mistake. I think that we've all faced that cross-road and came out on the good side. I'm going to do everything I can to bring forth his profound psychedelic/cultural epiphany. That's why I'm coming to you fine folks for help.
Thank you for your assistance.

You can't really plan these kind of things anyway
That's what I hear (The Log Lady) but, as I've mentioned before, I have incredible OCD. I MUST plan out everything. I'm even cool with massive deviations, just not from me.

I've become incapable of making ANY decision when my girl LUCY sits on my lap. That's why I plan my path so anally.

maybe this time, as an experiment, you should just let it flow...
While I know that previous posts contradict this statement, I'm a master of "surfing" whatever comes my way. I can handle and embrace ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING (ask Hilari). I'm just incapable of planning/preparing for it.
Maybe that makes no sense to you guys but, it does to me.
