I would recommend getting him TMV's Frances the Mute, have him listen to that.............I think that will sufficiently open up his mind a little
then maybe show him MMJ's Okonokos DVD, pretty sweet as well
Deloused in the Comatorium would also be a great listen from TMV. Also, my favorite album ever, First Rays of the New Rising Sun (or another favorite from Jimi as you can tell by my avatar, Axis: BOld As Love) would be great. If he appreciates classic rock to any extent he will dig these albums. Axis opened my eyes sober and lucy just made it that much better so hopefully your friend will benefit as I did. Let us know how that goes. Btw, Atl, rep it.
oh yes, I forgot. My favorite album at this time is Edan's Beauty in the Beat. It is amazing and really breaks the mold. I will seriously burn you that shit and meet up with you sometime to give it to you before you go on this trip. It's such a great album and got me (a former non-hip-hop head) into hip hop. Its really great. PM me if youre interested.

I am overwhelmingly honored by his trust in me when it comes to guiding his voyage.
My question: What music/movies/games/whatever should I provide for him?
Any input or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
music suggestion: some Antibalas, Funkadelic, Claypool, Booker T & the MG's, Hold Steady, Kinky, MMJ-- take him out of his comfort zone musically...give him upbeat, cheerful, funky shit!!
movie suggestion: don't make a movie/games the focal point --wait til the journey's near the end or skip it altogether-- if you decide you want to watch something I recommend Baraka. Ever seen it?
I like the idea of a long walk, bring plenty of water, and remember you can have a completely different experience during the day as opposed to night. Hope that helps!! ;D
Music: I would agree with Pink Floyd & TMV Also - Beck, Jimmi Hendrix, Portishead, Dave Brubeck, Fiona Apple - 2 earlier albums, The Rapture - "Echoes" album, Muse - I would suggest starting with their earlier albums, they're "rougher" and more powerful than their more recent albums & I'm assuming he's listened to The Faint
Some classical: **Ravel - Bolero** Debussy - Arabesque No 1 Chopin - Chopin Prelude Op.28-15
Not too much hip hop? Old Outkast albums (ataliens, stankonia, aquemini) Maybe Gorillaz? There's a dvd out there - Gorillaz live at the Manchester Opera House - not sure if it's the same but the link below should give you the idea:
(I caught it on a HD station w/surround sound...very cool.)
Films: **Anything by Michel Gondry - especially his music videos** any good music dvds maybe he's seen them already but these expanded my mind - a clockwork orange, sin city, fear & loathing, the usual suspects
Sorry! ...A little lengthy on my part, I'm all for broadening one's horizons - obviously these aren't all for one event, but I figure these are worth telling him to check out or rent, etc. etc.

I really appreciate everyone's input on this one!..... But I have to give squirrel karma here. Without actually knowing me or my fiend, and with very few exceptions, you pretty much nailed it! Gondry, Brubeck, TMV, the Gorillaz dvd, Sin City, Portishead and Muse! Great suggestions....and very appropriate for my intended purposes! Thanks!
lots of cigarettes on hand before the journey is a good idea if either of you ever smoke tobacco, a mid-trip 7-11 experience can be rather intense for a n00b.
I used to get my place meticulously clean beforehand. Though much of that came from the inability to get outside as we lived in one of the worst hoods in Amerika.
Many good ideas above, though planning may seem trite if you try to stick to a plan too hard. Much of his first experience may be about learning to roll with it, whatever may come.
In my early days, I credited the chemical rather than the circumstance, for the experience. Then I met some people who apparently liked to get all looped and go fighting !! Yeah-I couldn't believe it either. Point is, know that your plans, reactions, fears, and nuances and whatnot may help shape him for years to come, with or without deference to your intentions. Just make sure he feels the love.
And I'd take special care to hang with him the next day. He'll be all sparkly still. And in my honest opinion, there is often little better than a friend and some corn, and maybe a movie or something mellow and semisocial the day after. Kinda gives one a nice peaceful feeling to put it all back together by reflecting on the power of it all.
Everyone should have a caring mentor like you. Be a lot fewer naked freaks wandering around the city of Manchester while the festy's ragin' !!!

Axis Bold As Love will definitely turn on those 'ears'...as well as some Mars Hotel and early Grateful Dead.....yummmmmmm
scary music would be er....Bauhaus and Nick Cave..but I think thats what you might be steering away from....its just that thats QUALITY Lucy listening
..oh yeah ...silly string and those things that stick to the walls when you throw em are extremely fun play toys ....silly string should be done outside tho

this reminds me of one of my early voyages, we chewed up paper, like into spit wads, but huge ones and threw them against a wooden panel on my bunk beds and watched them squirm and dance for like an hour or two. later we played with the radio,we found a college radio station and dug on some 50's music then a show came on that played god knows who but all i remember is a voice saying "i am the high priest of LSD" several times. this was not a imagined lyric and I'd give 50 karma to anyone who could tell me who made this music. Also any Floridians remember or know of Dj EFx and the mind motion crew?
I've never had the pleasure of meeting Lucy myself, but I have been in contact with her younger cousin. I believe her name is Morning....something. Rhymes with "gory". Ah. GLORY. That's it!
Anyway, ol' MG is like Lucy but less-intense. Here some of the stuff my friends and I did while hanging with her:
The Doors - "The End" Pink Floyd (obviously!) - Dark Side of the Moon, imagine doing that while peaking! The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi is especially nice, as are some tracks off At War With The Mystics Santana - Caravanserai is awesome, one of his first jazz-fusion accomplishments Miles Davis - I have to second the motion on Bitches Brew, this album is incredible! My Morning Jacket - Z is a nice, calm album. Pretty good for coming down. Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon are also really calm albums.
Also, we really enjoyed bouncing tennis balls on the floor. I remember at one point I sat down and threw a tennis ball against a dresser repeatedly for almost ten minutes, because it was just so fun.
As far as The Mars Volta goes, does your friend already like them? Is he very familiar with their music? If not, I'd suggest De-Loused rather than Frances because Frances the Mute has all those CRAZY background noises (screeching, screaming, coqui frogs, etc.) and it may be a little intense/scary if you're unprepared. Just a thought.

me and lucy hung out this past weekend and i pretty much dedicated myself to jack white. elephant and white blood cells were great, but icky thump really made my night. ive always been a huge fan of floyd, floyd is almost natural to me when im fryin. i always play wish you were here for newbs because the shine ons really illustrate your peak while welcome to the machine takes you to that "dark" place. then theres wish you were here, it tends to bring people back to earth as they familiarize with the song. plus its just generally soothing. after the albums over i think a person generally grasps how something like music can take their emotions and their minds so far
