Btw, a real positive about the festival is the location. I've done a few city festivals now and this was by far the easiest to get in and out of. Also super close to so many places to grab drinks, food and coffee. The T wasn't far either and we stayed in alewife, so getting back every night was simple. Hard contrast to the shit show that is randalls island and zilker at the end of the night.
Initially the lineup seemed inspired that was before it was apparent that chance and the xx was this year's festival whores and before tool had governors Ball and there are mini East Coast tour. Still any festival with Sigur Ros bon iver a tool mumpsons chance top line along with some unique stuff like Brandi Carlisle and some hometown stuff like the hotelier needs to be taken seriously Nice work
I thought the layout was completely jacked. The red stage green stage thing would've worked if the red stage was fairly small acts and maybe the fourth stage. As constructive its semi insane
The Blue stage was Great. 3-4 of those and they would really have something. I thought the sound bleed was pretty annoying and I was on the rail for the blue stage most of the time I was there
Shaky knees Really spoiled me with their half hour in between acts on all stages. Because of the crowds and my insane need to have good spots I chose to rail most of the headliners starting at 4:30 or five. That our break followed by the hour 15 break was quite annoying. The only good thing was being at the green staged it allowed me to see the XX from a far. I have to be honest I don't get it I have no idea how they were at headliner or a sub headliner I got to see you run the jewels from afar and I get it but I'm not particularly a fan. I got to see major Lazer from a far and I really don't get it. But I do like the booty squad
I thought the lineup was worth the ticket price but the set up definitely was not. Security was incredibly lax at the gate and a bunch of incredible dicks inside. I don't smoke and don't even really like it but I do not consider it to be a unimaginable offense against humanity
The Friday Saturday Sunday scheduling thing made a lot of sense to me however moving the Sigur Ros time to overlap bon iver was stupidity of the highest order
Since I don't have any other place to put it I really don't get the hate for mumpsons there are very talented and put on a good show and I think their songs are pretty good
I have this as a 7.5 out of 10 I liked shaky knees a lot better but just because it's indie/rock through and through. I think this would work a lot better with one additional stage and a few more artists each day. There was a few too many times where I was choosing between the lesser of two evils and not what I really wanted to see
I'm a total music nerd. I literally teach drum lessons and run a music store for a living, so for me, watching Danny Carey live tonight was totally unreal. Tool is a machine. They don't miss a freaking beat and it's some of the most intense music, musically speaking. I'm in awe of how good it was. Not for everyone. My GF did not have a great time tonight. I had a blast though. Unreal how tight they are.
I totally agree with the musicianship. Those mfers don't even look at each other or interact. They are spaced way far appart. It's unclear if they know they are in the same band. But they are hella tight and given the complexity it's amazing they are so flawless. Total pros. The bass and drums are ridic. Honestly I have never seen a band where the lead singers seems so inconsequential.
I just don't enjoy the music/anti vibe. But they are talented. Let there be no doubt
Hotelier. Nicely done lads. They can open every day of this thing for all I care. Anti shoutout to the dick security guard who told the mosh pit if they did it again we would all get tossed. Enjoyed his dumb look during PUP
PUP. I regret every PUP should I could have gone to but didn't. That was in error. Good times
Converge. Didn't like but wanted to keep moshing
Frightened rabbits were fine
Piebald were fine
Cage was the best I have seen them in a while. Shockingly good looking crowd for Cage
Tool. I wanted to like it and be swept away. Talented but just didn't do it for me. The visuals freak me out
Fest favs Sigur Ros Mumpsons Cage Pup Hotelier Brandi Carlile Mac demarco Kevin Morby
Day 2 thoughts, the proximity of the red and green stages is starting to get to me. It's quite difficult to move after 4:00 in that area, there's just too many people. That being said, a friend who works for the festival shared with me that they capped the fest this year at 35k since it was the first year on the new grounds. Next year supposedly they aim to at least DOUBLE the capacity in the same space, which seems horrifying to me. Also the food line problem was BAD today. I have Celiac's so my options are already cut back a little bit, so the long lines are very frustrating.
All that being said I thought the music today was great, this fest does a good job of booking quality lineups top to bottom. I left a little before the end of the XX (just saw them in Philly and loved it, but I thought last night felt really phoned in) , and I don't particularly care for Mumford (though I'm bummed I missed the Beatles cover, anyone know who they brought out?).
Set rankings 1) Strand of Oaks 2) Brandi Carlile 3) Hannibal 4)The XX 5) Kevin Morby 6)Alexandra Savior 7)Nathaniel Ratliff 8)Oh Wonder
See y'all today I'l be wearing a titus Andronicus hoodie, with a kurt vile baseball tee under it, and an elephant hat. I'll be at the blue stage almost all day.
My pretty good video if I must say
Doubling this would be lunacy of the highest order. You would literally need to take downs the tennis court fences and put up an ton of sound buffers to get any other stages
Mumpsons kicked butt I was impressed The XX from a distance. I mean I don't get it. Like at all Nat Ratliff. Good but I wanted more. Without SOB he would be a fine early day act Brandi Carlie. Wow. Real talent Stand of oaks. Nice early day get Kevin Morby. Well done young man. I will see you again Alexandra Savior. I will not
Day 1 Vunderbar. Pretty sure singer has had head trama Lucy d Deerhoof. Sucks royally. I can't emphasis that strongly enough Car seat headrest. Was really good Mac demarco. I had no idea about him except a couple YouTube clips. Entertaining as all hell Sigur Ros. from the rail What an experience high art
Oh - I know Gov ball - I survived the storm in 2013 and the 2016 disaster and day 3 cancellation - the rest of you should just cancel now since I am bringing my good luck with me
I have no interest in the Thursday and Sunday lineup but Friday and Saturday are magnificent. For me
I think I'm coming to the sad realization that this might not be doable there simply no collection of affordable flights at the right time left anymore
It's an easy drive to both the Philly and Baltimore airports. But there's no collection of flights that work and make sense price wise.
I got one of the live nation festival passes - and because I am a U2 fan consider Friday at Roo to be the best fest day of the year - I was not planning to try for it - but now I am - here is what I wrote to my buddy after getting the pass
Bonnarroo seems doable Fly Southwest out of Philly Friday morning. Slight problem is that it's a 6 AM flight. That's pretty tough. However if i get past that i arrive in Tennessee at 7 rent-A-Car and drive to Bonnaroo. I think my pass actually includes camping so I could just sleep in the car. Do all day Friday which for me would start at 3:45 for me and go till 3 in the morning (lets do this Big Gigantic). Sleep in my car. Stick around the next day long enough to see the front bottoms. Drive back to the airport and get a 730 flight that arrives in Philly at 10:30. Sleep overnight in Philly and then go with you to the BB&T center to see the killers the next day.
Help me out
Is this doable? What if anything do I need to know? Can I get in and out of the campgrounds on time with that schedule? It all check out via google maps but I have no idea.
This could be glorious, or a glorious disaster - any help is appreciated
Oh - and I am just throwing this out there - anyone that has a place for me to sleep on Friday night - well the Karma gods will surely reward you - or I will if you ever come my way. And since I will be going to a bunch of fests this year - some chance I would have accommodations for you
Lets just say I just got one of those live nation festival passes. I have no idea what I am capable of. But it goes like - Bonnaroo - Friday and sat - 80% - ACL 80% - Voodoo - 100% - Gov Ball Sat and/or Sun - 100% - Peach for a day or 2 - 100% - Billboard 100 - ?? - Music Meadows - 100% - Lolla - 100% - Crystal Coast - 25%
Oh - 1 lolla ticket and 1 riot fest ticket now for sale - PM me if interested
When I copied this link to FB, it posted saying it's $799.
That doesn't seem right, seems pretty cheap.
Cheap until you factor in travel + hotel/accommodations for each fest.
Definitely a great deal. I am almost leaning towards it but I know I won't bid for it.
Is it bid or straight $799
I am in for $800 - I already have lolla I could sell that in a min. I have riot - but I would sell that and go to meadows or music midtown. ACL would be on the table, so would bonnaroo for U2 day and voodoo. I would do some gov ball, peach, billboard 100
Through this out there - I have a Hilton garden room booked Thurday night to Monday morning on points - I will likely only be there Sat night any maybe sunday night. Hotel wont let me modify the reservation to just my 1 or 2 nitghts. I have a good deal going on the points and would consider sharing the cost of the room for the entire fest - 2 -3 nights you would have solo. Includes hotel breakfast since I am Diamond (assuming they will give you the vouchers and I don't have to be present to get them). PM me if interested. 2 queen beds. Its like 2 miles from fest, next to a McDonalds and absolutely ideal.
Last thoughts before I shut this one down mentally and move on to Boston Calling
- Phoenix is sneaky good. I cannot say I am a fan - but I thought it was pretty interesting set. - J Roddy is one of my favs, but this is the second time I have seen him at a fest and I like it much less than a club. The all apologies cover was cool though - I am happy to have seen LCD - I don't think the set was as magical as everyone else seems to. I though the last 40 min especially was really good. - I don't even know if bleachers is good - I know they are a good time - I though Ryan Adams would be a lot more tortured - This is a great little festival with a real identity. As much as some people may want diversity in their line-up, I am fine knowing that if I don't know whoever is playing, likely it will fall somewhere in my wheelhouse
Hope for next year - Arcade Fire - The National - I know its a repeat but I wasn't there - Jack White in some form - Royal Blood - Futurebirds - Grace Potter - Japandroids - Sigor Rus - Bon Iver
In that nature of first world problems - I really hate the change - BI > SR made so much sense and would have made for a cool night. A little of BI > SR > end of chance makes no sense.
I would love a PUP aftershow - but I will be staying to the end of Mump - any late night Boston suggestions that are within walking distance of the fest?
Logistics were so good. I just walked out my hotel and was in the fest in 5 min. Reentry allowed 3x so if there was downtime could come back and shower, drink, whatever. Not that I would, but an option. Bags were searched, technically. Short of a bazooka you could bring anything you wanted into this thing. I am not saying flasks. I am saying you could get a handle in if you wanted. 3 stages and would could get to any of them in 5 min if you walked with purpose. A bit of sound bleed between 2 of the stages unless you were up on the stage – which I almost always was. 30 min max between each stages set times. So if you were waiting at stage for a fav the wait was not at all bad. Firefly is like an hour plus between main stage set times and waiting if painful. This was nothing. Loved it so much
Weather was so good. Despite weather prediction to the contrary the rain held all weekend. For 5 min during Shovels and Rope’s Birmingham I had on a poncho. That’s it. The clouds the first 2 days prevented a lot of sunburn Day 3 was all sun all day.
Kings of Leon pre-show was great. Much better live band than I remember from the 1 short time I saw them before.
Crowds were there late in the day. Before 4;00 you could get up on anything you wanted with no effort at all. If you wanted to be close to the rail for anything including headliners there is no reason that you couldn’t if you were willing to be there 2 acts ahead of time. Cage into LCD was the only clusterf and even that wasn’t horrible if you planned it right
I thought the music was amazing
Best discoveries - The Record Company. 1:00 on Saturday and this was my fav set of the fest. I will be seeing them again. Many times - Anderson East – I wont be going to see them but I don’t know why. Amazing voice over top of horns and the organ - legit talent and some fun songs - The Revivalist – Only caught the last 25 min cause Shovels and Rope – but dear lord I will need to see a full set at some point - Ryan Adams was better than I had even hoped
Best moments - Last 5 songs of LCD – Call the Police was amazing and All my Friends was everything I wanted it to be - Singer from Cage jumping on my head during Teeth - About 3 dif times during Dr Dog – oh def the highest crowd of the fest - The Revivalist with an on point Hey Jude and the crowd rising to the occasion - The Record Company first song and the dude owning the stage with just a mic and a harmonica - FIDLAR covering Weezer Sweeter Song - Bleachers - dealing with early sound issues nicely and then I Wanna Get Better to close, my second fav song of the fest
Slightly disappointed - Shovels and Rope – just cause their 2 person act is much better in a club or small stage. I love em but it doesn’t quite work as well on a vast stage - Cage crowd for not being more nuts. Usually all hell breaks loose at Cage, not this time.
Best looking crowd - The XX. Hair done, tons of glitter, actual wardrobe thought, recently showered
Worst looking crowd - FIDLAR – like the XX except the complete opposite. Oh BTW – shout out to the FIDLAR crowd, you are my people
I give this thing like a 9.8 out of 10. Loved everything. Would have preferred a non XX//Phoenix headliner. Other than that, I thought it was great.
Yo I think I stood & talked next to you during Ryan Adams/Bleachers! I remember you making the best/worst looking crowd joke. I was the "Cloud Nothings" instigator lol
Dude - get it on
I have to say as a guy who goes to Riot Fest and Bamboozle (when they had it) and warped when it is decent and a lot of small club shows for the frenzied crowd - I do need just a little moshing each fest day. Thank you to Fidlar, Cloud Nothing, Car Seat Headrest for providing that on their respective day.

Went Frank Carter > London Souls > Temples > CSH > Growlers > Highly Suspect > Fidlar > Cage > 3rd rail LCD
Highlights. Matt Shultz jumping on my head during Teeth. CSH Fill in the Blanks. A fing 45 min Fidlar throw down from the front with the cover of Weezer sweater song being just delightful. Free Greek yogurt bars. Last 5 LCD songs with Call the Police being amazing and All My Friends being just a perfect way to finish a very perfect day
highly suspect after show was packed by the time I got there. I'm giving the XX a chance but unless I really get blown away I'm leaving early to go to car seat headrest
I wrote this after last year MIA - I cant believe how much I nailed it

Enjoyed this thing even though I was not the demo. For the stuff that interested me most, white dudes with guitars there was like no one at the stages. Which made me realize I am not in the cool club I guess but was a great way to get front row ticket to a bunch of bands I like at minimal effort. In all honesty with the demo they have I if anyone was walking around and taking notes they would just say screw it, no Aaron West, Basement, Touche Amore, or anything of that ilk at all. Waste of a timeslot/stage. But I hope they don't cause worked for me.
Crowd way into selfies for me but all in all I thought this was a fun fest, and easy for me to get to. Wish I had gone before and would go again. I have to say since I saw it to camp for Coldplay, Chance the Rapper is an actual talent. I don't mind being impressed from outside my genre. Also, Carseat Headrest. I am a fan.
