I sometimes hate the random smiting when I have done nothing significant lately, but I like how it can keep people from being rude or annoying for no reason. I say keep it, it keeps things more interesting.

I dig it! Even if people are d!cks about it, it doesn't matter! It's all make believe! If it bothers you, maybe you're wound a little too tightly! Just my opinion!

Thanks for doing the poll, Danbird!
If "It annoys me sometimes but I want it to stay" wins, will there be any modifications to the karma system?
Yes, It will stay but annoy you less! ??? The mods can't fix what annoys you and they shouldn't be expected to try!
Nope, I disagree. The whole point of the poll is to enact change based on how the majority feels. You're right that it's not about just one person's opinion, but I'll remind you that goes for you as well.
^^ well right now - based on the voting - I would say there will be no change based on how the majority feels because the majority like the karma system

That's what I didn't see in the poll. If it's a good idea in principal, but has a crappy set-up, then what to do?
Personally I'd keep the karma system, but change it so that whenever you exalt or smite someone, then you leave them a message explaining why you've done it. Lot less confusion and random resentment then. Also you can see WHO exalted or smited you, and act accordingly.
I like it. I did have an issue with it about a year ago, when someone was docking my karma every hour for no good reason. apparently this person had created 2 usernames to smite me 2 times an hour. But i took it up with the mods and they took care of it. There does seem to be someone randomly smiting users anonymously though. I think many people have sufferred the anonymous-smiters wrath, as I've seen many people post that they are getting smitten when they haven't posted anything negative.
I think the system helps keeps people in check though. Other boards on the internet have far more bickering than this one, and I think the fear of smiting tempers that. It has its drawbacks, but overall I think it is a good way to temper the board.

It seems like the point of the poll is to find-out how the majority of us feel about the karma system, as it is. If "It annoys me but I want it to stay" wins, then why should it be changed? It bites us all in the ass sometimes but, most people seem to like it overall. It annoys all of us sometimes but, changing it would only place some arbitrary sense of importance on it. It's meant to be fun and if it bothers you this much, just ignore it. Saying that you shouldn't be expected to ignore it and that we all need to vote on it's existence because you don't like it, is kind of self-centered. Lots of things annoy lots of people. That's life. If something terribly unfair was happening on this board, i'm sure that the mods would step-in and take action to remedy it. Asking them to restructure any part of Inforoo simply because it annoys you, is putting your own opinion and comfort above everyone else's. They shouldn't be expected to cater to everyone's individual pet peeves and personal issues. That would be impossible.
Again, I remind you that it is all make-believe. Letting it bother only gives power to the handful of people who do abuse it.
Eventhough I do disagree with you on this particular subject, I really dig you and the vast majority of what you have to say. Karma for you....just for the hell of it.

^^^Thanks, backatcha. And you illustrated my major hitch with it, which is also what yossarian mentioned: people often don't tell others why they exalted or smited them (*especially* the latter). And while it might not be fair to force people to do it, I think communication would be a lot better if people did. When there's disagreement or disapproval, it just seems unhealthy to be able to push a smite button in order to express your frustration as opposed to trying to talk it out with the person. That's why even though what you originally said, Oat, annoyed me I wanted to talk it out with you instead. Glad I did, especially because you're a cool, levelheaded guy. So yeah... karma backatcha.
I actually never tell anyone when I smite them or exalt them. It's like life.....sometimes sh!t happens and you don't know what you did to deserve it, and sometimes wonderful things happen and you don't know why. Just take them both as they come. Things all even out in the end.

I totaly understand what you're saying and I'm sorry if I came across like a prick. It just seems like people are taking the virtual karma thing way too seriously. It's like a self-fulfilling phrophecy, in a way. If you get offended when you get smited/smote, and complain about it, you're more likely to be smote because of it. If some jackass is trying to get under your skin and you let him/her, they will continue...simply because they got exactly the reaction they were looking for. If someone sees that they can successfully taunt you, they're likely to continue. For a while it seemed like the simple act of posting in the Karma thread would paint a bull's-eye on your back. Some folks are just plain sad and use their smite-button accordingly. We shouldn't give them the attention that they're looking for. I think that's the best way to handle them. Just ignore them and they'll get tired and move-on.
I (personally) don't think that identifying smiters or requiring that an explanation accompany your own smites is a good idea. I think that, while it is more respectful to let someone know why you're taking their karma, it will only lead to lengthy arguments. Some people are incapable of agreeing to a truce, unwilling to accept a differing opinion, letting someone else have the last word, or just being civil in general....And some people just flat-out suck! I can't help but think that this sort of change would inevitably lead to dozens of locked threads and lots of hard feelings. I would rather be pissed-off at an annonymous jerk for a couple of days than establish any long-term enemies.
Just my opinion. Here's some more karma for you. We cool?

That's the way I look at it too, an explanation after the exalt or smite takes away from the mysteries of the universe.

You're probably right about that. It would be the best scenario, but perhaps too idealistic to actually happen around here. Although that's not to the discredit of the majority of fabulous, respectful people around here, such as yourself! I mean, case-in-point, right?

Now you tell us. All this time I thought that, by being nice to people on the boards, I was earning genuine karma to offset the pain and horror I inflict on people the rest of the time. For a few weeks, I actually believed that I didn't have to look forward to a thousand lifetimes as a dung beetle. I thought maybe I'd come back for 500 or so lifetimes as a dung beetle and, over time, work my way up to a highly-sexed bonobo (aka pygmy chimp). Now I find out it's all make believe? Better start working on my dung ball technique.

off topic, but. i had a discussion about karma today with my 5th graders. and how they are going to be attracting some negative energy later in life due to the energy they are projecting now!
So the karma system stays how it is. That seems to be the consensus here. It may annoy some people but they still like it. So there you go, the people have spoken. LET THEM EAT KARMA!!!!
