So the karma system stays how it is. That seems to be the consensus here. It may annoy some people but they still like it. So there you go, the people have spoken. LET THEM EAT KARMA!!!!

Here's just a suggestion, I know it might make quite a hassle and perhaps be difficult to do, perhaps even impossible but maybe it'll spark some other good ideas from someone....
The thing that bothers me the most is logging on and seeing all my karma has been taken away and I have done nothing uncalled for other than merely stating my opinion that someone might disagree with. If there could be a way to have a box come up that is like "Please state the reason for smiting:" and then that goes to the mods of that forum or something I feel like a lot less people would smite just for the reason of "he/she said Tool sucks and they don't!"

I've heard of other forums that use a karma system, where a smite must get approval before going into effect, and that a rejected smite can actually damage the smiter. But that might not be practical here, what with SO MANY members and only a handful of mods, that would be a lot of extra work for them.

I like the karma part but I believe smiting should be done away with.... it's a buzz kill. Maybe one could give karma but the amount you give is based on the amount you have.
Another thought is: should it really be limited to once an hour?

i think if people have a problem with it, they're taking it too seriously. yes, there are smiters out there, but its not even REAL. i have never smited anyone, though. i just don't see the point.
I know Meg, I will give you Karma for something you said or just because you're Meg and 5 minutes later you're back to the original (or lower) number.
What if to smite, you lose one of your own Karma? oooh, wouldn't THAT be interesting??? Then you would REALLY feel it and really feel it is warranted.
See - I wish there was someway to set it up that way - that if you smite you lose karma also and the only way you can smite is if you have karma to lose

How about: - every day you log on, you get 1 karma regardless (just to be fair to newbs) - if you give 1 karma, you get 1 karma as well (to encourage positive feedback) - if you take 1 karma, you lose 2 karma (to discourage negative feedback) - negative karma gets reset to 0 every day at midnight (so being a dumbass doesn't penalize you for life)

Sounds logical to me - now if only the admins and mods could make it happen
^ I was going to ask you about your karma level in the "Sleeping Outside" thread because I noticed it had taken a serious hit since the last time I saw it. Here's some to help offset whatever is going on with that.
This has probably been mentioned before, but it would be good if there were a way to know which posts you were smitten/exalted for. Not necessarily the person who smote/exalted you, because I like the whole anonymity of the way it's set up, but just for general feedback.

I like that idea. It seems pretty fair to me.
I also agree with whoever was questioning why we can only give karma once an hour. If I see someone else I want to give karma to I might have to log off and then forget to do it later.
some people like to take their karma level too seriously, but overall, I like it. It's a good way for new people to figure out who's opinion to take seriously and who's an assclown.

I just want to be able to see who's giving me karma, because I don't want it. The first day I posted anything I ended up with a karma of -1 and it made me happy. Now I have like 3 or something. Who is giving me this and why? ??? I just want it to be -1 again. It suits me. I could run around and upset people in an effort to get smited, but I am not that cantankerous. Can some one just smite me to -1. It's not wrong to beat a masochist if he likes it.
but i agree with becca, true LOL statements deserve a karma or two... musical opinions are a dime a dozen around here so i hardly ever karma for those...
