I can see your point placidcasual (and from some feedback I've seen elsewhere a lot of people felt the same way about the Malkmus set that you did). I can definitly think of some artists I know and love whom I would like to see in a different setting/setup. I don't have that connection to Malkmus (more out of ignorance than dislike, I've actually started to really love him, but more based on his solo work so far). To me, it seemed like he just showed up with a guitar and figured he'd be able to fill the hour one way or another, then sounded pretty thin and screwed some songs up. I guess I wasn't the intended audience. Its probably somewhat sacreligous on my part to not know/care about the Pavement tunes (I'm working on it). Like I said, there are plenty of artists I could see seeing and enjoying from the perspective you described.

yeah, i wasn't trying to be all defensive about it - i am just a big pavement fan so it made me happy to see him bust out the old tunes. you (probably) won't see that when he plays w/the Jicks.

i only saw Vandermark and i really enjoyed it. I don't know a thing about the scene or his music other than what i read prior to the festival - so i am not sure i can really comment too much.
