This is my first year away from New Orleans after six living there. I absolutely love Jazzfest. I think I'm going to go for the second weekend. Gov't Mule usually plays a night show the second weekend.
Does anyone know if the Saenger or Orpheum theaters have reopened?
This is an excellant source for after hour shows. www.jazzfestgrids.com/ It hasn't been updated yet but it looks like he is ready to get to work on that. The late night shows, many produced by Superfly, are great.
I've always thought that part of town should be developed that way. Superfly could have a "Jam On The River" with bands playing all night in the theaters.
It's just a short drive down ol' I-10(aka Evacuaton Blvd) so I'll try to make both weekends. I've got to go for Alison Krauss as I'm sort of an Alison Krauss groupie and have asked her to marry my twice(neither of which with favorable results) and then Panic is playing the next thursday. Hell, I might just rent a space in NOLA and stick around for a while. Only bummer:the week between the two weekends is finals week for me. Damn my luck.
This is one of those festivals I would love to go to. I have a few friends that swear by it and go every year. At times i tink they are worse than Inforooers picking the line up apart and spending hours commiting the schedule to memory.

I went two years ago, for the first post-Katrina Jazz Fest. When Paul Simon played Irma Thomas came out and sang "Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water" with him. That was easily the most emotional moment of ANY concert I've ever been too, there wasn't a dry eye in the place.
And the food, being in New Orleans, is better than ANY other fest ever. PERIOD. The Crawfish Monica is worth going for alone.
The night Michael Franti is playing is also the same night that Gov't Mule usually does a late show. I'm waiting to see if they schedule for this year.

i've never been to jazzfest, but an old college roomie lives in NO now, and two of my good friends are headed there for the first weekend. i would love to go to the second weekend, but to cut on cost, i'll probably just ride there with my friends.
either way, i doubt i'll be disappointed!

He played the other weekend that year, I missed seeing him. Someday I'll be able to get away and make time to go both weekends. It's always tough trying to decide which weekend I have to miss and this year is no exception ...
The same weekend I saw Paul Simon play had Jimmy Buffet. If Paul made us weep it was Jimmy who made everyone laugh. The Picayune said that that year Mardi Gras showed the world that NO was open for business, but Jazz Fest proved it to the people of NO. Definitely an emotional roller coaster that year.
SPECIAL NEW ORLEANS SHOWS ANNOUNCED On Friday, May 2nd and Saturday, May 3rd, Gov't Mule returns to New Orleans for the 10th straight year for two special shows at the Contemporary Arts Center as part of Superfly during Jazzfest 2008. New Orleans holds a place in the band's heart and has been the site of many extraordinary and historic shows, including The Deepest End. The band has a few tricks up its sleeve to celebrate the fifth anniversary of that show and its first 2 night run in town since Hurricane Katrina. Further info will be announced shortly.

hey everyone! me and jacob are going to be going to Jazz fest on May 3 & May 4th, and we're going to see the New Mastersounds Friday night at the HOB .. they play at like 2 a.m. on Sat. Morning.
And we're going to see Umphrey's Mcgee on Saturday at the HOB... busy, busy weekend.
Hopefully we'll be able to accomplish it all!
The sucky thing is that there aren't any hotel rooms because everything is pretty booked up.. but we'll figure it out.
We would love to meet up with anyone that's going to be there or lives in New Orleans and hang out!
