I think at this point Spoon can come off as too reliable. You know you're gonna get something good, but you also probably have a good idea of what it will sound like other than some slight variations. Happy to read that the new songs sounded good.
They also haven't really changed their setlist up for a few years. What I'd give for another Transference heavy set like the first time I saw them.
not me but my niece, who is a freshman in college and my actual and musical godchild saw Tame last night in Atlanta. she had such a great time and loved the show. i'm so proud of her for driving to atlanta on a school night for a show.
not sure who the opener was but she said she hated them. she texted me she'd rather be standing in silence.
she was in the cheap seats but will definitely pay the extra for floors next time. it's so fun to see her starting to learn the joys of live music.
One of my first shows freshman year of college was Tame on the Innerspeaker tour, this story makes me so happy. I love that the kids are so into him.
Saw them last week in DC on the floor, was surrounded by teenagers. But in a good way.
Also, Sudan Archives was cool but the sound was terrible. No surprise people didn't dig her.
Caught James Blake two nights ago. Wasn’t really feeling it, which could be more on me than him as we got there halfway through his set due to work.
Saw Dayglow last night, and man, can that kid put on a show! For only having two albums, his set was really tight, like that of someone much more seasoned than him. He covered “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” during the finale, and really did the song justice.

Yeah it was the same in Portland too, I just chilled at the back of the floor where there was plenty of space. I felt like a weird, late-20s specter floating between the olds in the seats and the kids up front.
Future Islands was absolute perfection on Wednesday. Sitting front row in the balcony was a dream and had the best view in the house for Sam's dance moves.
Busted that 19 month covid cherry with Perpetual Groove at Orange Peel. Your boy was rusty. We got there at 10:30 figuring we’d catch most of the first set and the second. Turned out we got there for the second set which I didn’t know until the house lights came on. I could have used another couple hours. My screaming was off too. Haha. They required cards or negative test and semi enforced masks in the venue which was limited to 200. Fans were on, and I was by a windy door (Wicked Weed side). So that made things comfortable for me and props to the venue for handling shit.
Big Thief was very good. They played more older stuff than I care for but Adrienne was in a joyous and confident mood and it really came through. She also switched the set up on the fly and added Orange, which def teased tears out of me but also had such a command over the audience that people had stopped singing and talking and the venue was completely silent. Been a long time since I’ve seen a whole crowd completely enraptured like that.

since it seems to be a hot topic lately, I saw Alanis last night in San Diego. it was nice to be at a show that was 80% women for change
Garbage was also great, but Cat Power bored me.
I caught this show a few weeks ago here. I missed Cat Power because we got stuck in traffic, but I heard the sound was supremely messed up. I thought Garbage was awesome and Shirley Manson really performed the hell out of that set. I think I may have liked their set more than Alanis’s, and I’ve been dying to see her my whole life. :/

Alright, the Brandi Carlile hype is real. I went to the final day of Ohana primarily for PJ and Sleater-Kinney. Both were good, but Brandi was the MVP. I need to dig into her catalog further, because I would happily see her again.
Hadn't been to that festival before, and it's comfortably sized. The vendors ran out of water, which was weird, so I think my bloodstream is now 10% agua fresca.
Closed out tonight by seeing Nation of Language and The Wants. As I've mentioned on here and elsewhere approximately 1,000,000 times beforehand, The Wants were one of the last bands I saw pre-pandemic and I love them very dearly as a result; they were the entire reason I was at this show in the first place. The set was divided 50/50 between new songs and songs from their (excellent!) first album, Container; if their first album was notable for mixing techno rhythms with post-punk guitar work, the new songs featured the same guitar but with more syncopation in the drums (and plenty of drum fills, the essential part of any balanced post-punk diet). I will endlessly hype this band unprompted and I don't want to oversell them here so I'll leave it at that.
Nation of Language were also quite good. It was like watching New Order but with a sense of humor (just before they want on, the had an extended bit about bands trying to pit the left side of the audience vs. the right side that was pretty funny). The bass tone was especially Peter Hook-like; it's honestly kind of surprising that more bands haven't tried to do do the same thing outside of like, Operators.
Also also, I decided to brave the forecasted thunderstorms (that didn't happen, making me feel disappointed I didn't get to see Debbie Gibson lol) to go see Jamila Woods earlier as part of the Chicago Pride fest. She had her full band at Pitchfork but today it was just her, her backup singers, and her (incredible) keyboardist. I liked her full band set more if not just because the band was incredibly tight and breathed life into her songs, but her lyricism shone more during what was effectively a solo set.

I think I would have come away with the same opinion had I not seen Garbage before (and if the row behind me would have been a little less annoying during their set, lol).

Hell yes!! Saw him at ACL on Saturday and even being a pretty big fan of him, he still blew me away. Also had my mom with me and she said that Sloan and the band "looked like a scene out of the Brady Bunch" but still loved him and his energy.

I must've went the day after (second night in Philly) and thought they absolutely killed it. Not brought me to tears and the guitar solos/jamming was extraordinary. They're just so in their element right now. 2nd time seeing them (1st time not at a festival), and I was completely enthralled. The crowd was really engaged, I loved a lot of the new/unreleased stuff, and it was my first time at Union Transfer, which was a great spot for them. Very primal. Hoping the new album is great and probably catching them in Cleveland on these new dates.
Saw Drive-By Truckers tonight, for the first time ever (I’ve come very close a couple other times but missed out for various reasons). I know their setlists are all over the place, was kind of wary with a slow beginning but it kicked in high gear towards the end, with a phenomenal closer in “Let There Be Rock” / “Shut Up and Get on the Plane” / “Angels and Fuselage”. Mike Cooley now joins some rare company along with Thurston Moore in the small but exclusive club of “Guitarists who I did not realize had insanely long fingers until this year”. More than a few obnoxious audience members, adding fuel to my belief in my theory about Gen X indie rock bands having uniquely bad crowds this year.
I’m at a show and I can’t bitch about the opening act on FB.
Were you at ascend amphitheater? If so, who was that first band? The sound was terrible. The rest were good though. I flew up and took my mom. She had fun!

The opener for the opener was Empath. They sucked. I complained on FB. It’s my thing.
James Blake was excellent last night. I feel like he gets better every time I see him. While his slower sadboy sound is 100% his lane and he owns it wonderfully, I would love for him to just throw down a dance set for a couple hours. When he extends the instrumental aspects of some of his songs they become some of the best electronic music I've seen live.

Black Midi was awesome Saturday. Being outdoors in Joshua Tree under all the stars was magical. The band killed it and I retract my previous statement that I liked them better without a saxophone. Sax guy killed it but the drummer is still my favorite part of the band.
Fuzz on Sunday slayed. Probably my favorite iteration of Ty's current bands. The sound and lights at the venue were perfect. I'm kinda bummed that we probably won't see another tour with them for a bit due to Ty 's new album with the Freedom Band.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Saw Lucy Dacus tonight. Was a big departure from the shows she's already done on this tour since her guitarist is out with COVID; she said it was one of the first shows she's done without him. She was clearly nervous but stuck the landing every time. She played mostly the songs from the new album that were often pretty reworked, sometimes performed solo, sometimes with Lucy a lot more prominent in the mix (read: a lot more acoustic guitar than you'd expect). A couple members of Bartees Strange's band guested, including Bartees himself on "Night Shift". Her encore was three new songs done solo; they were all pretty good but there was a very, very new one she had just written about a fortune teller that was really good. It sounds like most of the bands that have been in similar circumstances to her have been bigger bands that have easier workarounds for if something goes wrong; it must've been absolute chaos to try and figure out how to basically rebuild her entire show without a vital band member and she pulled it off incredibly well. Can't give her enough props for that.
Also, Bartees Strange brought straight heat as the opener, but you could've already guessed that.
