Well if everyone wants to get into the reasons for these high prices here are a few;
1- The increased demand, though this is not a big reason
2-Lack of refining capacity. This is due to the artificial restriction by the Oil conglomerate. When Reagan stopped enforcing the Sherman Anti-trust Act in the name of deregulation, the Big oil companies bought the little ones and closed their refineries. There were 305 refineries in the US in 1985 and there are 78 now. And no they were not closed due to environmental regs. Making less gas make Big Oil more $$$.
3- The collapsing dollar. The dollar has fallen by 50%+ against the Euro under Bush due to our reckless overspending. Since oil is traded in US dollars, the price must go up to stay the same on a worldwide basis. Notice European prices are up ~60% while US prices are up 300%
4- Speculators- Just like speculators drove up housing markets before the collapse, now they are driving up oil (and food) prices in the name of profits through the commodities market.
So in summation, the majority of the increased cost comes from US deficit spending and deregulation of the economy. But supply side economics says we will get trickled down on soon though, right?

Yeah, I'd say we've been getting trickled on for going on eight years now.
No kidding about the gay comment. It's not like he was bashing homosexuals.
See thats where you're wrong. Its fine if you want to say what you want to say but dont expect to not be challenged when you use terminology that is widely considered to be offensive and inappropriate. Passive acceptance is the same thing as bashing.
Does that mean I'm perfect and I never say anything offensive? Of course not. I slip but I dont whine about it if I'm challenged by someone.
When you see the people you love have to hide who they are and who they love because people make remarks like this you'll want to do what you can to make a change. And I'm not saying that anyone hates gay people, I'm saying that I'm going to stand up and defend my family and friends.

also when i complain about gas prices, i do not complain about gas prices in my town, state or country. people across the pond paying twice what i pay is not any less of a reason to Ann Coulter at how retarded the inflation of gas prices is. we cant even do anything about it as they just go up up up. it never even stays the same price for a week anymore, its like they always just quack with it a little so you dont know what you are paying for gas anymore you just give them money and pump it.
I disagree that there is nothing we can do about it. Back in the 60's, when there was true competition, there were these things called "gas wars" where oil companies competed for business and had sales and price mark downs. Imagine something like grocery stores do today.
As we deregulated and allowed oil companies to consolidate and collude we did away with competition. Collusion, and price fixing, are technically illegal but not enforced. If we broke up the big oil companies and imposed BIG fines for collusion, we could get real competition and lower prices.
Yes, I know it will never happen in our corporate America, but there is a solution. We just choose not to do it.

This is a really good tip.... I drive about 100 miles roundtrip to work everyday and I was tired of pumping $100+ into my tank everyweek. I did some research, because I'm a geek, and I found out that if you reduce speed to 65 mph and use cruise control as much as possible, you can save as much as .80 per gallon. I've been trying it for the past week and the results are amazing. It takes about 3-4 days to get used to everyone passing you on the highway, including wide-loads and old ladys. But if you keep with it, set the thing on cruise 65 mph, you will reduce your expenses. Give it a shot and let me know how you do. Also, I learned that operating the AC is not a gas guzzler, contrary to popular belief. Hell, if you are going that slow, at least you should be comfortable. Good luck on your drive. See you in a few weeks.

im guessing you watched mythbusters. if not, there was a test done with speed vs ac on for MPG. also, driving at 55 mph saves 15% more gas than driving at 65mph. like they say, time is money lol. it costs to get anywhere fast.
Yeah, gas prices suck. A lot. We haven't quite hit $4/gallon where I am yet, it was $3.83/gallon this afternoon. I'm just glad I don't live in the Netherlands - I recently read that, after Euro-to-USD conversion and metric/imperial conversion, it's over $9/gallon over there. No wonder they all ride their bikes.
European public trans is way better than here. Unless you live near a major city, you are effed...hell, I live in NJ, 15 minutes outta Manhattan, and our public trans isn't that great. For example, if you don't have a car, you can forget trying to attend anything at Giants Stadium. But if you live in Brooklyn, you can get to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, no problem, car or not...

Good advice, but I differ on the cruise control issue a little.
The cruise control on my car cannot properly anticipate a hill and ends up changing gears to climb sometimes (it's a 4-cylinder). When I am controlling the throttle, I can anticipate the hill, increase the fuel a little, and never change gears. My car uses less gas when it doesn't have to jump up 1000+ RPM when climbing a hill.
6- and 8-cylinder cars are less likely to have the same issue, I would think.

"If you reach back in your memory A little bell might ring 'Bout a time that once existed When money wasn't king If you stretch your imagination I'll tell you all a tale About a time when everything Wasn't up for sale
There was this cat named Johnny Who loved to play and sing When money wasn't king
We'd all get so excited when John would give a show We'd raise the cash between us And down the road we'd go To hear him play that music It spoke right to my soul Every verse a diamond Every chorus gold The sound was my salvation It was only everything Before money became king
Well I ain't sure how it happened And I don't know exactly when But everything got bigger And the rules began to bend And the TV taught the people How to get their hair to shine And how sweet life can be If you keep a tight behind And they raised the cost of living And how could we have known They'd double the price of tickets To go see Johnny's show
So we hocked all our possessions And we sold a little dope And went off to rock and roll
We arrived there early In time to see rehearsal And John came out and lip-synched His new lite beer commercial And as the crowd arrived As far as I could see The faces were all different There was no one there like me
They sat in golden circles And waiters served them wine And talked through all the music And paid to John paid little mind And way up in the nosebleeds We watched him on the screen They'd hung between the billboards So cheaper seats could see
Johnny rock that golden circle An all those VIP's And that music that had freed us Became a tired routine And I saw his face in close-up Trying to give it all he had And sometimes his eyes betrayed him You could see that he was sad And I tried to rock on with him But I slowly became bored Could that man on stage With everything Somehow need some more?
There was no use in pretending No magic left to hear All the music gave me Was a craving for lite beer As I walked out of the arena My ears began to ring And money became king"
Ha, you win! This thread makes me glad I dont drive.
I'm happy my car gets 30+ mpg, I can walk just about everywhere AND I carpool two or three times a week. Otherwise I'd be broke. I also heard that gas in Pasadena is at the 4.50 to 4.65 range....WTF?
