What helps for my motivation are telling myself two things:
1. Think about how great you feel afterward. I love that satisfied, melty butter feeling-like after sex ...and yes! It burns calories too-it its own motivator
2. Just get there...just commit for 10 min to anything. Maybe Ill just walk...but Ill be there.
These two things have gotten me there alot-and by the time Im done 'just walking'-I want to do more.
I still struggle with wanting to be in better shape-reading this thread is a motivator!

Before I explain my credentials to give advice on girly fitness, please know that, on my way into this thread, I had my eyes closed and didn't peek. And even if I did peek, I didn't see anything. (But you all look terrific.)
Now to the subject at hand. I've been doing yoga for years. I started with Bikram or Hot Yoga and then moved to Ashtanga (which was developed by the guru-looking homeboy at left). I know yoga is considered girly because most of the students are women. In my class, it's about 2/3 women. When I travel, it's closer to 9/10.
Yoga doesn't have to be just relaxing and saying "Om." Classes can be physically strenuous. And the women in the classes - who come in a variety of shapes, ages, sizes, etc., tend to be gorgeous (again, not that I peek). You can find classes that combine strength, flexibility, cardio, balance, and mental focus. Find a good teacher and a class you're comfortable with. But give it a try. I love it and it's changed my life.
I do yoga. I love it. Back when I was a lot thinner, I kept myself thoroughly toned with yoga and occasionally lost some weight. I only did it with a 20 minute DVD every day, too. Sara Ivanhoe changed my damn life! I dusted them off and started back on them the other day. She has a bunch of DVDs that target a certain thing and they're all only twenty minutes. I mix and match them. It's totally awesome!
Anywho, the Slim Fast diet is awesome. It cuts out my need for a candy bar (I need my damn chocolate!!!) everyday while also taking care of my inability to eat breakfast, which is one of the reasons why I'm so unhealthy in the first place. It has also helped me adjust my eating habits. I am now on a food schedule, which is definitely what I need! A free spirit like myself needs some damn structure sometimes! I've been craving Thai food for the last three days, though. I wonder if that's a side effect.

I would like to get in shape for roo '09. Hopefully, starting this soon will give me time to reach my goals. I'm thinking of using a game I have for xbox. It's the yourself fittness game. I've heard about the new wii fitness thing but they say the yourself fittness is better? Don't know- has anyone tried it? Maya (the yourself fittness trainer) kicks my arse!
Also, for the diet I was thinking of the Lean Gormet tv dinners. Maybe a combination of Slim Fast and the Lean Gormet?
Lean Gourmet is really good. A few months ago I lost some weight eating those, but my aforementioned candy bar love sabotaged it.
I've done the Yourself! Fitness before. They gave them away at McDonald's in 2006 when you bought a water and a salad. I remember this because I got a yoga one on my way to Bonnaroo that year! I never used it, though. I did get a cardio one that was amazing. I don't know about it being better than Wii Fit, but it is very effective.
I did ediets one time and really liked it. Lost about 10 lbs in a month. It's a cool website where you fill out all this stuff about what you like and what your life is like, and it just shoots out a menu for you. You can choose to do microwave dinners or to cook, and gives you all the recipes and a shopping list. You can substitute and switch meals around as much as you want, and you can even eat out-it tells you what you can get at dif restaurants.
I liked it because t told me exactly what to do, which I really need. Plus it didn't feel like a "diet" it really just retaught me how to eat healthily and to portion things. I was eating a lot and eating things I really liked. Anyway, it's ediets.com if you want to check it out. I think it was like $30 a month for the plan and you had to sign up for at least 3 months. ps - I printed off all of my favorite recipes and still make a lot of them regularly. Delicious!

Hey, also there's this thing called Vida One. It is a software program (cost around $30 I think) that tracks your exercises and diet. It has dailly graphs that show how many calories you've consumed verses burned. It has most eat out foods listed and tracks everything!! It allows you to glance a month at a time and gives a good idea as to when you normally consume more. It tracks more than I can remember and can help you regardless of your goals. You can put in the amount you want to weigh and the date you want to be there and it will help you keep on track. It's like the ones athletes use. Since it doesn't have a recurring charge you might want to check it out too.
Hey girlies (and girly men ;D)! Sorry I've been MIA, my computer was in the shop! However, I would just like to say that in just about a week and a half of making healthy changes, I've gotten to the lowest weight I've ever been!! Well, when I was 12 doesn't count. Woohoo! I went to the doctor and when I saw the number on the scale, I seriously did a dance, haha!
Still not to where I want to be so I have to keep up with it.... glad to see all of you are still at it too!

I feel compelled to play "The Sage" here. Feeling good and being healthy and active are great. And nothing I say should be interpreted as discouraging that. But there's an epidemic in this country of women with body images issues. The media bombards us with images of women with these unnatural, surgically enhanced, photo-shopped, air-brushed bodies. That's not what real women look like. Real women have hips and curves and booties that don't look like they did in 7th grade. I've seen this in my wife and my teenage daughters and my friends. I don't know a single woman over 15 who's happy with her body. So if you don't look like Pam Anderson, don't beat yourself up. You're not supposed to. No one's supposed to. I don't expect this alcohol-fueled diatribe to change anything. But next time you find yourself stressing because your butt is bigger than Paris Hilton's or your skin isn't flawlessly smooth, lighten up on yourself a little and understand that maybe you're holding yourself to a standard that isn't realistic.
^exactly why this is the "fitness/get healthy" thread, and not the "let's all go barf until we feel good about ourselves again" thread. Having strong, supportive women to share with, helps keep all of us motivated and keeps us from falling into the deep hole of low-selfesteem induced crash dieting. I don't think anyone here is trying to starve themselves into a toothpick. Just trying to get into better shape, and we are helping eachother do it!
I don't expect this alcohol-fueled diatribe to change anything.
There is also an alcohol epidemic too. ;D
I don't want to look like Pamela or Paris. I just don't want to be as big as the CITY Paris. 65% of all adults are overweight. So it is not just the media putting false ideas into our heads. And this does say get HEALTHY for roo.

Preach is sister...while I agree that the media does horrible things as far as female body image goes, America is also a country of obese people. I think sometimes we use the "unrealistic media image" as an excuse to not take proper care of our bodies, because it's easier to blame an outside problem than to make serious lifestyle changes.
Anyway, much respect and admiration to all you ladies on here who are doing what you need to in order to get healthy (ier). If more people took the same amount of responsibility, our country wouldnt have the weight problem it does.

I want to find a yoga/pilates class that I can go to too. I don't belong to a gym though, so I don't really know where to look
Have you checked out your local YMCA? The ones here offer yoga, pliates, spin classes, etc.....and they also offer huge discounts for students and people who are broke like me

Karma to both of you, Druid & CarpeDM! (Druid goes first because she's a girl hehe) Druid for being making me LOL as always while making a good point, and CarpeDM for what I put in bold, because I couldn't agree more. I know my friends and I have blamed hot models for making me feel fat, when really, we were just making ourselves fat with our unhealthy lifestyles.
Everyone has different goals, depending on what's right for them and their body. The Girly Fitness Thread is all about supporting each other to achieve those goals healthily! And I am really excited for all of us who are getting there!
And just for clarification, when I was 12 I was overweight so its not like I am aiming for the pre-pubescent look. I'll keep what T&A I have, thankyouverymuch ;D

I know in Chicago, there were quite a few yoga places that have "donation" days (where you pay what you can) and/or free days. Do some Googling, look in your local free papers & whatnot, and ask around. I bet you there's at least one place in your area that you could go for free or dirt cheap, without needing to be a student or have a membership.
I went hooping last night and my hip didn't hurt at all, so I'm considering myself healed and ready to work out!
Here's my plan.
Food wise, I'm not dieting. I'm just cooking/packing all of my meals. My worst habbit is going out for lunch, so no more of that!
Working out. I hate working out. I can't do it unless it's fun and I enjoy it. So I am going to start getting up before work Mon-Fri and doing my old ballet warm up. 100 plies (squats), 100 releves (heel rises?), and 100 bat mas (kicks). It's a great strengthening exercise, plus it helps posture, which I need. And I am going to hoop at least 3 evenings a week. Typically I like to walk down to the park about 3/4 mi and hoop there for about 45min then walk back. But if I'm on a time crunch, I am at least going to get my hoop on in my living room.
So that's my plan! It's fun, so I'll do it, and it really will get results.
*I accidently put this in the fashion thread at first. I'm having a ditsy day
I'm here! Still motivated! Just been busy getting ready to move back to college, where a terribly unhealthy lifestyle awaits. And its gonna be so hard to not eat a ton of greasy fast food in the 8 hour car ride... *sigh* I guess I really need to amp up the exercise so I have a little more room in my diet.
Clairity, your exercise routine sounds awesome! I can't hoop And you will save a ton of money cooking/making your meals, I try to do that as much as possible for economical reasons.

Ugh I suck. I am just so sick of doing diets and programs... I just want to be able to just be able to eat when I'm hungry, stop eating when I'm full. I honestly have been having the weirdest eating schedule. I've been eating either once or twice a day and it's not always the best choices. I am really considering cutting back my drinking, I feel like that has the biggest impact on weight gain. I only go out usually once a week but when I do I take it as a get out of jail free card and just have so self control. ugh
I have a snacking problem, so I've started bring a lot of cut fruit to work. I'll snack on that all day to keep me away from the candy bowl. Works pretty well, and then I'm not starving when I get off, so I'm not tempted to run through a drive-thru on my way home. And I agree! Much better to eat several times a day in small portions than to eat 2 big meals

I think I'm doing okay on my "diet." Last Friday I freaked out and ate an entire pizza. I, for some reason, didn't eat ANYTHING that day and decided to go to the grocery store after work. Yeah, great idea. I bought a thin crust cheese pizza, red pepper hummus, plain rice cakes, and Pillsbury crescent rolls. A real strange variety of food because when I'm that hungry my pickiness goes into overdrive. I need to stock back up on my Slim-Fast or Ensure stuff because I either don't eat enough or don't get enough nutrients in my diet if I don't have it. I've been having a problem with anorexia (in the medical, non-nervosa sense of the word). I'm just not hungry very often, but when I am I'm HUNGRY. I'm forcing myself to eat at this very moment and I'm not enjoying it, but it'll save me from eating all of my calories at one time later.
Also, a suggestion to anyone who is working on drinking more water. I have a ProSpirit water bottle with a built-in straw. Definitely helps increase the water intake!
Anorexia is used by some doctors to indicate lack of appetite, but most don't because it's confused with anorexia nervosa, which is the eating disorder. I pretty much sit on my butt all day at work because my job is to sit on my butt all day. In the past few months I haven't had much of an appetite and I figured it was because I'm not technically burning very many calories. I became even more sedentary with some nerve problems I've been having in my head, but when I leave work I suddenly get SUPER hungry. I've been forcing myself to eat because it could just be a communication problem in my body or something. lol The no appetite comes and goes. For example, yesterday I ate half a bagel for breakfast, some grilled chicken and broccoli on white rice for lunch, and some grilled chicken for dinner. I snacked on a rice cake and a little bit of hummus. Today, so far, I've had half a small bag of SunChips, a cup of Sprite, and 4 cups of water. I might finish the bag of SunChips before I leave work and then either not eat anything tonight or be overly hungry tonight. Tomorrow might be a combination of the two days: Half a bagel, a handful of chips for lunch and maybe some soda, and a decent dinner. It's ridiculous. I'm probably going to see my doctor about it once I get paid. I don't know if it's in my head or if something is really wrong with me.
I'm just hoping that it isn't my old eating problems trying to force their way back into my life. I won't have THAT happening! Hopefully going back to school will even me out a bit. I might be subconsciously stressed about it.
school can be stressful, i know.... i wanted to share some suggestions gals!!!
-20 minutes before every meal drink a big glass of water, you can sometimes over eat because your body doesn't signal to your brain that it's full for twenty minutes.... -drink A LOT of water every day.... it will be annoying because you have to pee a lot but it flushes toxins from your body, helps clear up your skin, helps with pms and cramps, your body will love you or it -for breakfast everyday i eat either 2 big bowls of fibre 1 cereal which has 56% of your recommeded fiber intake for the day, or oatmeal, not the processed stuff from the packets but the real stuff, and sometimes i add apple pieces and cinnamon, or honey, or a little brown sugar... it leaves me feeling full for HOURS.... which is great!!! -sometimes everyones got cravings though, you should try to meet that craving, not suppress it... if its sweets your craving think fruit or low cal popsicles bars, if its salty your craving think cashews, almonds, or even pretzels - i don't eat a lot of meat because its a hassle to prepare, and $$$$$, if your the same make sure you replace it with a protein source, i eat a lot of egg whites and beans (not together lol), both are super cheap and excellent sources of protein. the trick is to never feel deprived, because when you do you're a lot more likely to binge eat all the things you've been dreaming of... so make sure you're full and satisfied!!!
those would be my suggestions i'm within 5 pounds of my ideal weight which i'm extremely grateful for, but the struggle with weight is a HUGE epidemic is north america, it's both scary and sad that people on this side of the world are eating themselves to DEATH (diabetes, heart attack) while people on the other side of the world are starving to death.
