Speaking of GIRLY things like periods, haha, I'm really nervous going on birth control because I know it can make you gain weight. Have any of you experienced that?
Yep, +10 lbs for me. always drop it instantly whenever I stop taking it too. it's a serious pain in the butt.
Okay, I know that there are a few boys wandering in here, so I suppose that they are subjecting themselves to this...
I was wondering what you girls do to fight off the temptations/obstacles set forth by Aunt Flow. I always have trouble getting motivated to excericse at that time o' the month because I just feel so...blah. And then on top of that, there's like ice cream cravings and whatnot. So, aside from just working on sheer willpower, any tips on what to do to resist those urges/get more motivated?
I know I feel a lot better (physically and mentally) after I work out, auntie flow or not, so I always keep that in mind when I don't feel like going and it keeps me in line. And I think it comes back to what others have said about having a routine, at a certain point not going isn't really an option anymore. (at least not without making it up later)
So basically, it cures the blahs
the eating thing... I can't really help ya with too much, I love my sweets, especially at that time. I just make sure to watch my portions very carefully and thoroughly savor the little bit I do have
EDIT: My friend CarpeDM called to my attention that suggesting its okay to have some girly relaxation time when you're on your period proliferates the stereotype that women can't function on their periods. He's too chicken poop to post it on the thread, but I'd just like to say in case I was being too stereotypical- not every girl is as weak and whiny as I am, but if you are, I think its just fine to feel sorry for yourself if you don't feel good.
Well, I see what both of you are saying. Like today, I made myself excercise despite the fact that I was feeling blah. I was just wondering what you girls told yourself mentally or whatever to just be more motivated in general. And, CarpeDM, don't be afraid to say what you think. I think that we all apreciate your input and won't get mad at you for speaking your mind. If anything, the fact that you think it just attributes to a sterotype is encouraging. Hope that makes sense...
And, now that I've finally posted in here instead of just reading everyone else's posts... I'm working on shedding a few pounds myself. I mean, I suppose that I am in pretty good physical condition (I've played soccer all my life and I'm at a healthy weight for 5'9"), but there's still a little room for improvement. I do love excercising and being active...I just think my biggest problem is snacking and not always making the healthiest nutrition choices. There are a lot of things that I've been doing. I think the biggest things for me are: -eating smaller portions/not overeating. -drinking lots of water and soy milk -having a bowl of cereal for breakfast as well as lunch or dinner -snacking on fruits or vegetables when I feel sorta hungry between lunch and dinner
I also thought about you girls (err, guys, too!) today while I was excercising. I don't know if your cable providers offer the same sort of thing, but I can access some free workout programs on the television. I think that most of you are looking to go to the gym/workout outside, but I think that if you just feel like excercising from the comfort of your own home, DVDs/tapes/television programs are good ways to do that. Also, I also do push ups/sit ups/etc in my room. Just thought that I'd share some of the stuff I do...because it could be like an alternate workout if you don't really have time to go to the gym or whatever. (Sorry if those were already pointed out/obvious. )

Kinda akin to what you're saying, I think getting to the gym or up to walk is the hardest part. Once i'm doing it i'm just like, why was i so slow to get off my ass? Its just that initial push, then its just enjoying it.
Gotta love accidental extended workouts. I went to the track, did about two miles of warm-up and sprint-jog intervals, and then realized I had locked my keys in the car in true blonde fashion. So, I did what any normal human being would do - I ran the 2 miles back to my house, all the way up the ginormous hill without stopping. (yay?)
Moral of the story: You never truly know what your capable of until you are forced into it. Oh, and don't lock your keys AND cell phone in the car. It makes things difficult.

your mileage may vary, though
I've been on a couple different kinds and haven't really had issues. I didn't gain at all when I was on the pill. I think my boobs might have gotten a little bigger on nuva ring, which I guess is good for some girls-not me I think it just depends on your body and what kind you use. The pros definately outway the cons IMO. Plus, when I'm on BC, I don't have PMS symptoms as bad, ie cravings
And, CarpeDM, don't be afraid to say what you think. I think that we all apreciate your input and won't get mad at you for speaking your mind. If anything, the fact that you think it just attributes to a sterotype is encouraging. Hope that makes sense...
That makes plenty of sense, and thanks! Karma for being cool!
"We're no longer called Sonic Death Monkey. We're on the verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive, but just for tonight, we are Barry Jive and his Uptown Five. "
Ahh...PMS and workouts. I do know that working out reduces PMS symptoms and reduces cramps, so I encourage it...and I try to do it. Unfortunately though, I get CRAZY fatigue, so it makes it hard for me
Also, for you ladies who get a little...ahem...well let's just say 'excitable' around the time of your period, remember that SEX BURNS CALORIES!
I'm hitting a wall...craving McDonalds, not wanting to go to the gym or skipping strength exercises when I do go. I NEED MOTIVATION. I ran/walked (I'm not up to run/job level yet) on the treadmill and I was sooo proud of myself, but I can feel myself fading fast. Plus, I'm moving this weekend and don't necessarily have time to go to the gym. I guess moving burns calories!
What do you ladies do when you don't have time to make it to the gym? I can't get motivated at home. I get horribly distracted - I almost HAVE to be at the gym to work out. Encourage me please!
Clairity, I actually was on the NuvaRing when I was in high school, but I just used it to regulate my period rather than for birth control. I didn't gain weight or get bigger boobs, but I'm reluctant to try it again because I feel like my BF could feel it... ???
But yeah, the pros of BC definitely outweigh the cons. I'm just gonna have to work hard!! I had a dream last night I had a big "cheat" meal, haha. I have a really unhealthy relationship with food...
Bama, I actually prefer exercising at home / outdoors to the gym. I feel really uncomfortable in the gym and basically hate going. I used to go for runs/jogs outside when the weather was nice, but haven't started that back up. I really like doing workout DVDs too. I don't know if any of you have watched The Biggest Loser, but they have workout DVDs that REALLY kick your ass, and they taped them while the contestants were still losing weight so its not a bunch of super-fit models with smiles plastered on their faces demonstrating the exercises! And while yoga doesn't burn many calories, it does tone and improve your posture, and its very calming and centering for someone like me who is a little all over the place ;D
But the one good thing about going to the gym is I feel a little silly if I don't work hard or stay very long, because I care what people think about me. I don't have a gym to go to while I'm at home, but in less than two weeks I'm going back to college and we have an AWESOME rec center so I think I'm gonna have to hit that up a few times, if only for the lazy river!!
but I'm reluctant to try it again because I feel like my BF could feel it... ???
My ex wasn't bothered by it. He said every once in awhile he could feel something there, but it wasn't bad or anything, and most of the time he didn't even notice. I've asked guy friends who's GF's are on it, and they all said the same thing.
Exercise during my period helps with food cravings, cramps and the blahs. So does doing anything BUT curling up in bed, although this month I definitely had to do that with my heating pad. I was so sad. But the next day, I was up and running errands and going out and basically forgot to feel bad.
So for minor issues, don't dwell. For the major ones, I am a firm believer in clean sheets, Extra Strength Tylenol every 4 hours and a heating pad. And Kleenex. Feeling awful always makes me cry.
im really into my hotyoga classes now. it burns a TON of calories and you feel great afterwards. its GREAT for cramps and it changes your cravings. when im home i do some light weightlifting and some stomach exercises. i also like to ride my bike a lot!

I will turn on an exercise DVD and put it on mute, then turn on the radio. Or after I've memorized the moves, I'll just do them while watching TV. One thing I hate about working out at home is that there's other things I would rather watch/listen to. And after a while, I may still not be bored with the moves, but I will HATE the instructor and the people behind him/her.

Hmm... maybe I should try it again. Right now, I'm doing lots of research on the Internetz about the different levels and combos of hormones in the different brand names of BC. Whew, its so confusing!! But I need to go in there informed. Apparently, BCPs higher in progestin are the best for getting rid of menstrual cramps and PMS, but progestin is also testosterone-like and can worsen acne and increase hair growth. It also has water retentive properties. So I guess I will continue coping with my symptoms as usual, to avoid those lovely side effects!

[male comment] HCTS - don't worry too much about the BF feeling the ring. It generally relieves him of something that he does feel - condom. Either that, or he has to take matters into his own hand(s).
I do not know what new technology exists for you young folks - I think I heard about something new that an OBGYN was discussing as a new solution for people who seem to keep having children. It was much more discreet that in some ways could not be known by the male that the female was on birth control. This is advantageous when the views of religion within a community may not be in keeping with the desires of the possible mother.
My wife had issues with the hormones effecting her emotional state, so I would say that whatever you think is best for you is what you should do.
I too need to get in better shape - I know that a pear is a shape, but not the one I want, but because I am going to Mexico in late October. I do not want to come out of the water and hear - Thar, she blows!! Or have some environmental organization place wet blankets on me and pour water over me until they get me back into the water like a beached whale. ???
touching on a few mentioned topics... - birth control never made me gain weight but it makes me VERY nauseous and has gotten even worse to where I can't even take it anymore, I need to find an alternative. The whole concept of the nuva ring kind of gives me the willies though haha. I'm considering the shots. - i do definitely get um, excited, during that time. Whether or not to do it or not, depends on the guy in guess. and whether or not i feel okay with it...or want it bad enough haha. - alcohol and losing weight. i was told by my doctor and my trainer that there is an enzyme in alcohol that causes your body to be unable to burn fat for 48 hours. So, there really is no way to avoid it and drink.
Ok. So I'm wondering if anyone has any exercise recommendations for toning the inner thigh area. I've been running 4-5 times a week, so my legs in general are getting more fit - but the inner thigh is being so stubborn. Thoughts?
Ahh. I became good friends with that machine when I had my Planet Fitness membership. The gym I went to was kind enough to have it facing towards the wall. Hopefully they'll have one at the the campus recreation center so I can reacquaint myself.
But that other one looks good until then. Always looking for new uses for the dumbbells. Karma.
Ok. So I'm wondering if anyone has any exercise recommendations for toning the inner thigh area. Thoughts?
well there is always this lovely thing at the gym. ;D ;D
not my favorite needless to say
this is better
i LOVE that machine, the inner and outer thigh ones, but i always feel so vulgar when i use them lol. and i am really flexible so its more comfortable for me to have it as wide as it will go and i just feel very um, exposed, and like all the men are trying to stare. not fun at all. just let me work out in peace haha. but, i like the exercise i will do like a million of them. also, for thighs, try walking on thhe treadmill on a really high incline, it gives a nice burn through the thighs and butt and you get cardio in also.
HereComestheSun Diet coke is my huge addiction too....I have to have it or I get mega cranky.
So...I was planning on getting fit and joining the gym by my work, but my husband and I are trying to have a baby so I think it would be almost pointless to try and get in shape right now since it will all go to hell if and when I get knocked up, LOL! I am lifting small hand weights though to try and tone down the arm flab I have accumulated.
I need to be more consistent though. I'll do it one day and plan on doing it every day and then go weeks without thinking about it.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
i recommend getting off the diet coke before you get knocked up... also you could try walking while holding the weights
my friends who have had babies tell me that the worst thing you can do is use it as an excuse to just eat and eat and eat
my friend tassie gained 70 pounds, her baby was 7 lbs...
i'd say get in shape and your baby will be better
Yeah i have been trying to wean myself off the diet coke. I have only had about three this week! I will probably do the walking with weights when the weather cools down. Our highs have been up to 100-104 lately and the evenings aren't much cooler. I am defintiely going to keep doing yoga and light pilates.

I have to confess that I have not been working as hard as I should. I have yet to eat veggies and my running has slacked. I have cut down my drinking (well except for this week) Tomorrow is a new day though... I need to get with it.
Also BC never made me gain, I was using YAZ and I found that pill to be amazing, it helps stop bloating and fatigue, gives you lighter and shorter periods and also helps with breakouts. I would def suggest it to anyone.

^ my dr wants to put me on yaz, he thinks it would work well for me, but i just hate taking pills. maybe i'll try it though.
speaking of drinking and going out though, im not doing a very good job of it. Ive gone out every night this week but hey, ive been out of town for over a month and before that had a boyfriend and worked a lot of weekend nights, so, i had lots of people to catch up with. i say im allowed
hey gals, just thought i would drop my two cents in on a few things... i have a love hate relationship with exercising, i hate the idea of doing it, but love it while im doing it... my absolute favourite exercise is a spin/cycle class at the gym, its super low impact on the joints which is nice (especially for me because i have a bad hip, broke it 5 years ago) and its the hardest i've ever worked out in my life... also i've been lifting a lot of weights lately, which i also love!!! I also face the same dilemma about the booze, i go out 2 nights a week clubbing so i always try to dance off whatever i've drank lol....

I'm on Yaz, but aside from the clear skin, I have experienced very few of the other positives. Granted, it has not made things worse (and my periods are way more regular than they would have been otherwise), but I still get bloated, tired, and just as depressed as ever during that time of the month.
I'm off to do hill repeats - fun? Hopefully I don't get caught in any hailstorms this time.
