Ok girls, I just ordered my first hoop and need advice on how to get started. I'm hoping to get enough practice in to add to my work out routine and also to be able to hang with the rest of you at Bonnaroo without making a complete ass of myself!
Any suggestions on where to find info for a beginner hooper?

Linz, there are some hoop threads buried in the bowels of Inforoo. I will dig them up for you to read over. We have a lot of great hoopers here on the board, and they have some great advice.

Linz, I see that you're in M'boro. Don't know if you're interested in driving to the "big city", but there's a studio over here in East Nashville Hoop-a-rama that has hooping classes for $5/class. It might be worth it to take a few beginner's class to figure out how hooping works, and then go on your own from there.

I actually found that place while doing a Google search. All the beginner classes were booked at the time, but I'm going to check back periodically for when they start new classes. Thanks!
I actually plan on moving to Nashville soon. I just graduated from college and I'm stuck here in Murfreesboro (aka HELL) until I find a decent job.
2 days in and p90x is kicking my ass. In a good way. I was a little worried that it was going to be so hard that I wouldn't be able to do it, but it's not at all. The time commitment is the hardest part.

I'm sort of fascinated by p90x, but I'm afraid I have too many injuries to do it. (Missing both ACLs in my knees and I have a spinal fusion neck to waist... tmi probably, but I have to modify a lot for lifting or any other exercise). Too many shearing movements and I'm toast.
I'm interested in hooping too, I never actually heard of hooping for exercise before this thread, but I wonder if not being able to move my spine would make it impossible... hmmmm. Might be an interesting experiment.
Well, I've got a new problem now in that I'm not eating enough! I've been aiming for about 1300 cal a day, which is 200 under my BMR. Now that I've been really working out, I haven't been as hungry and snacky, so I've been coming in way under without even trying. I don't want to lose too fast, and I definitely need enough cals to sustain my workouts. So todays goal is to eat a bigger lunch! (still healthy, but more food)
Hey ladies in Nashville- today's Groupon is $20 for 2 90 minutes pole dancing classes at Godess a Go-Go off of Wedgewood. It is a $60 value normally. Pole dancing is supposed to be a killer workout, and I am all about changing things up!

Same here! I've been aiming at around 1200-1300 calories. I lost 5 lbs in less than 2 weeks - watching my calories and started back at the gym doing 3 miles on the elliptical 3 times a week. I've also been eating bigger lunches and I think it's evened out a bit. It's really not a bad problem to have though
I had my first hooping class tonight... I haven't touched a hula hoop since I was a kid and I'm also a perfectionist to my own detriment so the first 50 minutes of the class were pretty frustrating, but everything clicked in the last 10 minutes and I love it already! Got a feeling that I'm going to be a bit sore tomorrow though.
Hearing all of you ladies talk about hooping totally makes me want to do it. It sounds like a lot of fun! I have been cursed with an apple shaped body which, to me, would seem to make it harder... Been doing weight watchers and have lost 27lbs. Could stand to lose about 80 more to be at my ultimate goal, but by Roo time, there should be about 40 less to lug around than when I started in January!
^^^ Do it! Don't wait forever to start like I did! I've only been practicing for four days and I'm hooked already. I had a fair bit of bruising around my waist after the first day (still have visible bruises on my sides), but that just forced me to figure out how to hoop on my hips. I live in a tiny house, but if I rearrange some furniture I have enough room to practice and move around just a bit. I went into this thinking that I would never do it in front of anyone else but already I want to go to the park and practice in a big open space.
Also, congrats on the weight loss so far, that's awesome!
^do it! I lived in an apartment when I first started and was in the park within a week. Even if you can't do much, people that see you will admire your confidence. Plus, you can probably do more than them, so they'll be impressed.
Setting up close to a couple trees always helped me feel not so out in the open.
Thanks for the encouragement Clairity! There's one park in particular that is close by and has some nice spots where I could find a tree to help me hide out a bit until I feel more confident. Bringing it to roo might be a different story but I've got lots of time to practice before then.
I will be practicing in a tiny apartment too! My hoop should be arriving any day now. I ordered one from Hoop Mamas on Etsy and I can't wait to try it out.
For those experience hoopers, should I try to get the basics down on my own, or should I just cough over the money for classes?

It's different for everyone. When I first started, I didn't have the option of taking a class, so I just learned from youtube videos. hooping.org has a really good collection. After hooping for 3 years, I got the Hoopnotica DVDs as a Christmas gift, and they are awesome. Even as a more advanced hooper, it has been great to go back and strengthen the basics.

Alright so I have made a diet plan and would like to get some feedback. My aim is to lose 10 pounds by the end of May, so let me know if you think it could be accomplished this way or what things I should try to change.
-Eat breakfast (yogurt, granola bar) -Small snacks in the day (fruit, veggies) -Have normal dinner -Dessert 1-2x per week -One day a week I could eat whatever -Run at least 3-4x a week -Work abs every day

Thank you! In the beginning it was a love/hate relationship with WW but I am used to it now and it is definitely something I can stick with forever. I am going to start shopping for my new hoop after this weekend!! I know that the larger sizes are good for beginners but does anyone have any other tips in what I should look for in a quality hoop? Thanks in advance!

Hiya slightlyaltered!!
I am now a bit chunkier than I once was, but I've been training on and off since my teens (about 20yrs now, ouch!), to the point that I had considered entering a female fitness competition about 5 years ago. I've become a whiz at shape-up when I put my mind to it. Just so you know how I come by my knowledge of the subject.
You may already know all of this information I'm giving you, or this may be way more than you were asking for....
I would strongly recommend that you add more lean protein to your diet. I would best liken protein to "throwing fuel on the fire" that is your metabolism. Protein protein protein, at least 0.75grams per pound of body weight, but I would actually recommend closer to 1gram per pound of body weight. Sounds kind of technical but if you weigh, say 130, you should aim for at least 90 some odd grams. This sounds like so much to people, but it really really really helps with weight loss. And it isn't really taxing on the kidneys of a healthy individual, that is as myth.
Secondly, I would suggest that you are not consuming enough calories for weight loss. Once again the fire adage comes into play. Your metabolism is a fire that needs fuel to burn strong. A strong metabolism = weight loss. Very low calories will cause an immediate weight loss of primarily water, but then the metabolism will begin to slow and fat will be stored as the famine alarms go off in your body. You should never consume less than 10 times your desired body weight in calories, or no less than 1200 a day if it falls below that.
Thirdly, I suggest a little weight lifting, light weights if you like. Women generally don't have enough testosterone on their own to bulk up, rather the bit of muscle we gain rids us of that "jiggle", decreases our size because muscle takes up less room than fat, and increases the metabolism even more because it burns more calories both at rest and at play.

^^Thank you for taking the time to make such a thoughtful response! I did find what you said helpful. I have definitely been eating healthier lately with more protein (chicken, beef, fish) along with salad. But I sort of have an issue with eating where once I start, it's hard for me to stop, so I just end up eating way more than I should. I think it's a compulsive thing I do that may have something to do with anxiety. So, I'm really trying to focus on figuring out a method to keep me from doing that, or if I can't stop doing that, ways to make it so instead of gaining weight, I'm losing it.

Juggs speaks the truth about the abs.
I hear you on the compulsion of eating, especially during times of stress. "Emotional eating". Carbs raise Serotonin levels, the "feel good chemical" in our brains, so that is pure biology in action. I have a few simple tricks that I use when I am training.
Eating more protein tends to curb appetite, so that may help. It takes the digestive system a long to time to break down protein. Proteins with Omega 3's are perfect for cravings (fish, walnuts). Eating 5-6 small meals/snacks a day will keep your blood sugar even. Three hours is the LONGEST I go between meals when I am trying to drop weight. Also, a glass of water before each meal and sufficient water throughout the day. It fills the stomach somewhat so there is less room to fill with food. 3L of water a day is a good goal. Distraction is another good method. Simply switching tasks can throw off compulsive thoughts. And lastly, if you are into aromatherapy and the like, grapefruit and peppermint essences are good ones to try to cut cravings.
Also, if you crave sweets, eating a pickle can help. It hits the same receptors as sweets do so it can eleminate the craving the same way a sweet would and is only about 15 calories. Strange huh?
Now if only I could motivate myself to get back on the wagon full time!!! Alas, the perils of being a workaholic.

Finally got out running for the first time this year the other day! And boy, am I out of shape. I don't even remember if it was last summer or the summer before that I was running fairly regularly, but even when I was doing that I wasn't in amazing shape, but over the course of the summer I did really improve on the ratio of jogging to walking I was doing, plus I lengthened the route I was taking. And this time when I went running I was really starting from scratch as far as all that goes - I'll definitely have to work my way back up! And I am SO sore now. Eek. Oh well, at least trying to work my way back up will give me a challenge to work at!
I got out my hoop this weekend for the first time in a while. It was fun, but now I'm bruised all over again. I guess I will be starting from scratch with my hoop-bruises, too

I'm addicted to hooping! I've been at it for a few months now and do it almost everyday! I just ordered my first LED hoop, it should be here by next month, just in time for Roo!! Lets have a hoop jam at Bonnaroo I am so down

That might me give me the boost I need to actually use my my hoop at Bonnaroo! I am very shy about drawing attention to myself and I need to get over that.
Has anyone else gotten sore hips from hooping? Mine have been really sore for the past two days, but my hips tend to be tight from running anyway, and I have been doing some kickboxing so this may have just pushed me over the edge.

yes, i'll get random muscle pains in my hips and sometimes legs and arms especially after hooping for hours at an event or something. i also have a ton of little bruises all over my body especially on my legs.

I have noticed that a muscle on my stomache i have never seen before is starting to show. only on one side. i found out this is because i should be trying to hoop in both directions instead of just one. haha!
I just realized this thread exits.. I tried to catch up and only got to page 9, so I don't know if anyone has mentioned any of this..
First of all, getting engaged and moving in with my fiancé has been bad for my waistline.. No major weight gain, but there will be if I don't make changes. He only likes food that is bad for you... Comfort food... So that is what I cook. He also makes frequent fast food runs for snacks and it's hard to pass on that order of fries. Ugh. So since I can't seem to eat as healthy as I used to because I have to cook for two and he won't touch anything I used to eat, I went looking for a solution. I found the books Now Eat This and Now Eat This Diet. Both books are packed with low calorie versions of your favorite comfort foods including pizza, burgers, cookies, and fried chicken. Finally a solution!
I also like Zumba whenever I fall off the exercise band wagon. The live classes are too expensive for me, but I have a set of the old DVDs and a version for the Wii. Once I get back into the habit I start back in with my The Firm DvDs.
Lately I've been struggling. I have a hormone imbalance that puts on weight around my belly.. Again, mo major weight gain, but the amount of weight at my belly compared to the rest of me sucks. I feel like ass all the time and the place I'm carrying weight is the most dangerous for your health. Ugh.. And my girl time of the month has sucked.. Bloating, fatigue, pain, acne and mood swings for the week before my period and then pure ridiculously crippling pain during my period. It has made it so hard to do anything when half the month you feel like you've been in hell and the other half you are just trying to recover and feel normal. Oh yeah.. And the migraines and silent migraines are painful and blinding. I'm only 27 so I'm too young for hormone issues like this. Ugh. And the stretch marks... My thighs are the same size as ever, but when I came off birthcontrol 6 months ago I started getting stretch marks on my thighs.. Another symptom of screwed up hormones.. And the negative sex drive! It sucks!
This month I started using progesterone. I can see immediate benefits. I don't feel like I am in a fog, my insomnia is better, fewer headaches, and my sex drive is back. And normally I would start feeling bloated and moody by now, but I don't. I will have to see if it helps regulate and de-pain my period, get rid of acne and stretch marks, or help me ditch the weight around my tummy. Oh yeah.. And my boobs don't hurt like they uses to. So I'm hopeful this will help me feel like me again.
For now I just need encouragement to exercise and say no when my fiancé wants his fast food fix. I've always been reasonably thin, and I don't want that to change because of hormones and lifestyle changes.
