I've been twice. I just don't care for most of the stuff lumped in there. Theres some stuff thats considered "jam band" that I love. Umphrey's McGee, STS9, Allman Brothers, some Gov't Mule, etc.
But the thing is, Bonnaroo is a full-on all-genres music festival. You don't HAVE to like or even see Jam Bands there anymore. And if you don't like jam bands, its okay. Or at least it should be. I'm just not interested in seeing two of the headliners cater to the exact same audience.
I know Bonnaroo has its roots in Jam Bands and stuff, but we have to face facts. Its an all-around music festival anymore. I wouldn't like two Jam Band headliners, much like a lot of you guys wouldnt want two metal headliners. Hell, I wouldnt even want two metal headliners. But you get what I'm saying? Variety is the spice of life.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you have never seen Phish. Because if you had, you'd realize Phish is only a jam-band in the sense that they have a penchant for occasional improvisational exploration. Phish is a rock band first. They are a rock band who bridges the genre gap from many many different styles of music, including, but not limited to, Blues, Jazz, Pop, Bluegrass, Classical, Country, and, yes, even Metal. They do this on a nightly basis, in the live environment, and give variety to their shows by consistently changing how they approach a show on a given night.
Phish, as a band, is the embodiment of what Bonnaroo is as a festival. Similarly, Bonnaroo embodies the sense of musical variety and adventure that Phish embodied.
Phish, throughout their career, brought people together from different musical backgrounds, because of their unique ability to blend the genres into a seamless format. They ignite within these people the desire to travel long distances to unite in a community spirit centered around music. Sound familiar? Of course it does, Bonnaroo has this.
Phish is a natural fit for the festival. Not only is Bonnaroo modeled very similarly to the festivals Phish put on in the 90s, but they both embody the same musically adventurous spirit. I think if they play, they will likely play 2 nights. And if variety is the spice of life, and Phish does play Bonnaroo, you will be hard pressed to find a band at Bonnaroo that will have as much musical variety in their show as Phish does.

While it's true, Bonnaroo is not simply a jam band festival, you have to look at it's history. Bonnaroo was built up through the jam band community. The fact of the matter is, "jam" acts typically take 2 (or sometimes 3) of the headlining nights. It was only 3 and a half years ago that Dave Matthews Band headlined one night, and WSP played the other two. Just look at how many times either Dave Matthews, Trey or Panic headlined. The vast majority of Bonnaroo headliners have been jam bands, and there are some people who consider acts like Tool and Radiohead to be on the jammy side of things too. There is no standard for headliners. I'm tired of people asking: "Who will be next year's metal headliner?" or "Could [insert band name] be Friday's metal headliner?" Who says there has be a metal headliner? There is no mold for Bonnaroo headliners, it doesn't have to be one metal band, one jam band, and one mainstream act. If they see the opportunity to book Phish, and the Dead, I'll bet it happens. Having Phish and the Dead in one festival assures a sell-out, which didn't happen this past year.

The thought of Bonnaroo being headlined by Phish and The Dead makes me oh so happy. Keep to the roots and throw WSP in there.....or if you realy want to make people happy COULD YOU IMAGINE Radiohead, Phish, The Dead......wow!

How bout a Pink Floyd reunion to go along with the dead and phish??? ha just kidding as amazing as that would be... how bout some bands that we could just rock out to and have a great time thats all that is needed
Its funny that AC-DC are being mentioned on the board as a rumor. I took my 10 year old to the acdc show in Indy(no i could not bring myself to pay $91 for the ticket but I scored two free seats in a suite) and kept thinking to myself that this might work at the farm. After the way Metallica was received last year I think acdc would be accepted. The band can still rock! It was a great show even though it was a bit short but man was it fun. Angus still brings it just as he did when I saw them for the first time 25 years ago. Great sing along show.
"We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, movie gods, and rock stars. But we wont, and we're slowly learning that fact & we're very, very pissed off......."

^^^^It wouldn't be enough to keep me away....since last year I didn't really care for the lineup and had the most fun at a Bonnaroo yet....of course this had a lot to do with my AWESOMELY close to centeroo campsite....
But it would make me so happy to see these types of bands back on top of Roo!

it would be funny...but i'm not sure if thats what i'm looking for in a headliner spot at roo. AC/DC has become a caricature of "rock music." Might as well have Spinal Tap play.
I still keep thinking Arcade Fire would fit perfectly on Friday Night.

I have no idea as to the validity of any rumors. I would have to think that if Bonnaroo could get both or either The Dead and Phish they would. That would be a no brainer. If either reform and tour this summer, their shows would be extremely large draws.
Bonnaroo has enough diversity that even non Jam fans would find plenty to make them happy.
I do think Bonnaroo should have some counter programming during headliners. One act is never going to please everybody.

I call it nap, shower, and food time before late night. I think a lot of people do when they aren't into seeing the headliner. They actually had some stuff going on in Somethin Else and a few other places, but I really wanted there to be a DJ or something. That would have been a lot of fun.
I have a hard time believing that anyone who has been to bonnaroo more than once is a "non-jamband fan."
Has the festival taught you NOTHING? Bonnaroo is a place to open yourself to all that which you have not had a chance to explore yet, even if your pre-conceived notions tell you that you won't like it.
Bonnaroo is a place where you should leave your inhibitions at the door, and accept the fact that our differences are really what unite us.
If you have not learned that yet, you still have yet to experience BONNAROO.
A - flipping - men, best thing I've heard so far. Bonnaroo definitely changed me.

I think that one or two major tent acts would be a good idea during headliners, because you're rarely going to find someone who's interested in all 3 headliners. The possibilities are limitless.
The thing people miss about the solo headliner is that it is a chance for the festival to come together as one.
All day and all night we are all out exploring the festival, checking out bands, seeing different tents, stages, cafes, etc etc. Each Bonnaroo experience is totally unique in the sense that every person has a totally different experience, and you can literally find 2 people who saw no 2 bands that were the same.
However, Bonnaroo is wrapped up in a sense of community and community spirit. The solo headliner gives the entire festival a chance to unite together, for one show a night, under the spirit and umbrella of music. Without this solo headliner, there is no chance for the entire Bonnaroo community to unite as one. To me, that sense of community is not often found at other festivals. There are no major festivals who have this strong sense of community that has persisted for this long. The solo headliner, along with Bonnaroo's roots in the jamband scene, are 2 of the major reasons this sense of community persists 7 years later.

i think the point about "coming together at the headliner" is a good one. i hadnt thought about that.
i am not a huge jam band fan but i dont mind it at roo. i dont want to hear it the ENTIRE time in there but i enjoy some of it thrown in there. thats one of the things i like about roo is that i can listen to music that i dont have in my collection or wouldnt see live. i also like to hear new bands.
as for the headliners....acdc is fine with me - i think they have a really fun personality to their show. if the dead and phish also headline then that will be cool also.
no one has mentioned neil young as a headliner.
id like to see ghostland observatory on a large stage at a late night spot. they were great last year...
What about Blitzen Trapper and Elbow, both have songs that are getting noticed and they seem like they fit the mold for middle of the list bands.
I would not be surprised in the least to see Blitzen Trapper on the lineup... They're touring with Iron and Wine, just released a phenomenal album (entitled Furr), and have seen a steadily growing fanbase over the last few years that will undoubtedly continue to grow... A perfect afternoon set in a tent at Roo
