I hate to say it but the roo has become a scam. Ive been to Bonnaroo for 5 years now. Tickets in 2004 were 137.50 if I remember correctly. Now 5 roo's later they have gone up a hundred dollars while you book Widespread as a double headliner, Metallica and Kanye West. I am not bashing these bands but lets keep it real. The people and festival goers who have made your festival a success can no longer afford to go. People are losing their homes and their jobs and you decide to make a bigger profit. I have great memories of Bonnaroo, I got to see several bands and comedians that I would have not had a chance to see. I have been turned on to great music and good people. I even registered to vote in the 2004 election at Bonnaroo and proposed to my wife at the 2005 Bonnaroo. This will probably never be read by anyone, let alone anyone with any athuority. I was very much looking forward to attending Bonnaroo again this year. But Bonnaroo no longer means to have a good time. Bonnaroo now means lets make as much profit as we can.
Aside from VIP, are tickets any more than last year?
this is what i was gonna say.
apparently VIP prices jumped, but GA prices only increased by approximately the cost of inflation ($5, I think). if you're gonna complain about a big price jump, then it already happened in a previous year.
I bought my GA tickets today and ended up paying $30/ticket less than I did last year. Economy's shitty for everyone, can't blame them for raising the prices a bit.

I hate to be argumentative, but I was also @ 'Roo in 2004 and the line-up was about half as big is it is today, and the amenities on the grounds were not nearly as good as they are now. What most people don't seem to realize is that A) the prices of ALL things have inflated over the past 5 years, and B) that with the gradual ticket price increase has come more artists and more activities. Bonnaroo is just not the small, purely hippie festie it was 2002-2004 anymore. Ticket prices simply reflect that truth.
If that's not your scene, then by all means don't go, but I am getting tired of people trying to make it sound like Bonnaroo has completely sold out, and that anyone who goes is getting ripped off.

'08 was my first 'roo, so this is total speculation on my part. but i bet one of the price hikes happened when bonnaroo was expanded to a 4 day festival (2007, right?). well, i'm shocked that adding a day onto the festival would cause the price to go up!
yeah, you don't get a big headliner or as many bands on thursday, but thursday had some pretty damn good music if you know what's up (mgmt, battles).
But I bought all these off people in the traffic jam (and never paid over $100)
2007 - $189 2008 - $209 2009 - $209
I agree that the tickets are getting expensive. Still, a 4-day vacation for less than $250 is still cheap. And since I live only 30 miles away it's a no brainer for me to go.
I am gonna have to make the trip to Rothbury though.
For you numbers geeks, adjusting for inflation, tickets for 2002-2005 would cost about $160 so there's been about a 30% increase in price, not including fees.
So don't go. All these posts saying junk like "Bonnaroo no longer means to have a good time" are just dampening the mood for everyone else. For all we know, the reason it costs more is because they booked a better-than-usual lineup. Maybe it doesn't mean that, no one knows for sure. Until we do know for sure everyone needs to just chill out. Bonnaroo isn't for penny-pinchers that stress and worry about money all the time, it's for those that care about nothing more than having a good time.
I mean really, it's gone up $100 over the course of 5 years. Know what else has gone way up over the course of 5 years? The quality (except the Kanye debacle admittedly). Let's do some math:
$100/5 years = $20 increase per year Roo = 4 days long $20/4 = Roo going up in price by $5 per day of operation.
Am the only one that doesn't see it as that big of deal? It's not like your phone bill went up by $100/month or something - this is a once-per-year bill. If you want the quality to go up expect to pay a little more.
It's Bonnaroo people... stop complaining.

They've been raising transit prices pretty much yearly here, and they are going to do it again, by a LOT, very soon. Also, they are planning to add new tolls all over this city next year. Milk has pretty much doubled in price in the last 2 years, and everything in the grocery store is going up. My rent goes up about 10% every new lease, and sometimes even more than that. It's not abnormal to pay $100 or more to see a single concert in an arena these days. Club shows that used to be $20 a few years ago are now more like $30, $40, $50, even more sometimes. My electric bill is going up about $7.50 soon... and why? Because NY'ers have been using LESS electricity, so they claim they have to increase the price to keep ConEd going. Airline tickets have skyrocketed, and now there are all sorts of new fees attached to them, even just to simply bring a suitcase with you.
Maybe it's just because of where I live? But I mean, what the heck HASN'T gone up??? Oh yeah, because of the economy, my salary has been frozen for 2 years now, and bonuses have been completely cut out of it ... but that's just so we can continue to stay in business
I bought my Roo ticket for $209 plus fees last year, and paid the exact same price today. That was something I DID NOT expect from Superfly and Bonnaroo, and I give them karma for that

Well said! No increase this year for GA was a pleasant surprise.
Hell, if $40-$50 is stopping you from coming to Roo, you might want to rethink the trip anyway.

Do you think the production companies are effected by raising health care costs, increase in utilities, increase for performers, increase for security, increase for advertising...on and on..
What do you expect the price of entertainment, cars, houses, utilities...to go down?
It is a cruel hard fact to realize that the price of doing anything in this and other countries keeps going up..
The nice part about this country is we are able to do any thing we want, oh and we have so much to do..
jess8004, I'm not bashing you in any way, if cost of going is a problem, why don't you go to every other one?
everything costs way too much...but for 4 days of great entertainment i don't think it is that unreasonable. Last year I ended up finding a ticket online for about 212 with taxes. If i can do the same this year i will be happy with that. anyway i am still pumped for this year and can't wait to see the lineup.
If you stop to think about it..going to a (as in one) concert with a band that opens and then the main act for lets say $75 a ticket? Now that is a rip off..

That's EXACTLY why I have become addicted to festivals. For what it costs for tickets to see half a dozen shows or less, I get to see at least 20... places like Bonnaroo, ESPECIALLY Bonnaroo give someone like me the ability to see just about ALL of the bands I could never afford to see otherwise. And that says nothing about the rest of the experience and what that provides. There's no "concert" in the world like it. I go to work, then a happy hour, then a kickass show for two or three hours once in a while and have a fun time... then I go home, go to bed, sleep a few hours, and get up to go to work again.
At Bonnaroo I leave work and most of my daily troubles, and forget any of it exists for a week, all while wandering a music wonderland in total constant bliss. I don't have a lot of $$, but I'm happy to give them whatever they need to keep going for as long as I am able to. For me... I think they give me back a LOT more than what I give them. I hope I always have the choice.
Sorry for the length, I'm in the mood to ramble ;D
All I have to say about this is Bonnaroo is great - each year - I see on average 15-20 bands with 4-5 of those being BIG name bands that tickets for a concert would easily be $75-$100 each and I get to do this for less then $250 for the 4 days - seems like a bargain to me.

I've loved Roo, but I agree with the original post. They're going to have to do something pretty exciting to get me to go.... It's Bonnaroo v.s. Rothbury (in a steel cage match) this year, and only one is going to win my money.
What's with all the people coming in here going, "OMGZ ROO SOLD OUTTTT CUZ THEY MAKE MONIEZ NOW AMIRITE??"
Dude. It's a BUSINESS. Every band, every promotion company, every musician has to make MONEY. You can argue about how "musicians can still not make money"...but you'll never get to see musicians like that live...unless it's in a garage

It is definitely a bargain. We go 3 hours to Dallas a lot of weekends to see shows most tickets average 50 bucks a pop, some more, some less...but I usually have to stay in a hotel and eat a few meals too. That, plus gas $$ adds up. That is just for one band and doing this every few months costs a lot of money....I'd rather go to Bonnaroo and see nearly all the bands I want and then I can cut back on my trips to Dallas throughout the year. (I've only gone to Dallas twice to see shows since Roo, this year).
If you don't want to pay the price, then apply as a volunteer and you'll get your money back at the end of the fest. Plus you'll get fed and be treated better. Its what I did!

^^this^^
I counted it all up, and I saw about 25 acts during last year's Roo, almost all of them full sets. So, basically, an average of $10 per band. Where else can you get that value? Even the least popular bands I saw would still charge more than $10 a pop for one of their shows.
First of all, using the word "scam" is kinda silly. Excepting presale, which you were not specifically addressing, they give you a list of bands and then ticket prices. You buy a ticket for the listed price (which also transparently lists all fees) and you go to Manchester and see the bands listed. That is not a scam, it is a business transaction.
The festival charges a price. If the price they charge is attractive to you for the bands you get then you should buy tickets. If the price they charge isn't worth the bands you get then you should not buy ticket. That's the risk they run when set prices and line ups.
Personally, I don't have a problem with the price charged for the line up. I am choosing to go. You do not feel that you get value for your money at Bonnaroo and you should choose not to go.
