^I agree to a point, the problem is escalation, at which point an entire thread becomes unreadable then you get people who start doing it for fun. Pretty soon it is PT threads, and thats what I hope we can avoid.
thats def true, I guess maybe I just have an easier time ignoring people making rediculous comments.

i took a long break a while ago because of the way i was being treated by several posters. every since coming back, my karma is taking a beating, and it's from the same person, and it's a regular.
now, don't get me wrong...losing fake karma doesn't keep me up at night. it just baffles me that people go out of their way to smite me for absolutely no reason other than they might not like me that much.
it won't keep me from posting, or having an opinion. there are too many people here i like, and too much great information. so, my karma could be negative and i'd still hang around. i just don't understand the need for the condescension, attacks, and general crappy attitudes i've seen as of late. in the end, we're here for music because we love it that much. why does that have to be reduced to chewing each other out because you may not agree who will or will not be on the lineup?
and if it wasnt for some of these "negative vibe threads" it would be pretty uninteresting around here. and its usually the people uninvolved in it that are the most concerned about it. just dont click the thread if it really brings you down or dampens your excitement for roo. for those of us involved its usually a positive thing and it just gives off a negative vibe. i know im smiling the whole time when im involved. but i guess we could tone it down and all just read the song title game! but that would be about as fun as a kanye latenight. maybe we can bring back the corncat karma fountain. that was always an interesting read with positive vibes ;D

OK....I TOTALLY don't understand this...but maybe I am missing something? Or is it just that you are saying it's fun to stir up trouble? Which I get....and in a light hearted way I agree...and it would be TERRIBLY boring if we all just sat around and sang kumbaya and told everyone how pretty they looked and how much we loved their shoes
But....name calling and calling people lame and saying they have NO taste in music and NO business going to Roo or any other place cause they have "sold out" et al ....and making them feel like they don't know what they are talkiing about and making them feel like sh*t for HAVING an opinion on Roo, music or life in general is just RUDE....not cool, not hip, not ANYTHING but just RUDE!
well i do agree that the direct name calling and personal attacks are not cool. they dont bother me. i think its funny. but i can also see why its unwelcome here. i wouldnt quite say that stirring up trouble is fun. but heated discussions between people with differing opinions is fun. and in my opinion its what inforoo is here for. it truly would be extremely boring around here if everybody just talked about how great things are and anyone who thinks roo has changed or dosent like jayz, weezer, and kanye is a troll who is just stirring up trouble and ruining the vibe and should be modded or censored. people see things differently. and discussing those differences is fun.. for me anyhow. if its not fun for some they should ignore it. there are plenty of happy positivity threads on here. but its kinda funny that the threads everyone is interested in are the ones that have that "negative vibe" and i personally think its much more contained this year. instead of it running rampant through every Dosh darn lil wayne and jayz thread its concentrated in 1 or 2 threads. for me its finally gotten to the point where roo is so far from being something i care about that its only worth bitching about in 1 or 2 threads. theres way too many custies on here now to have that conversation in 400 different threads. so us oldskool arguers pick and choose our battles. it cant be that hard to avoid a couple threads. isnt there room foreveryone here to have thier fun. i could Ann Coulter in every red hot chili pepper, jay-z, and lil wayne thread that gets started. or i could start a thread about how much those threads are ruining the roo vibe. but instead i just stay out of those threads. i think they are silly and dumb and they ruin my vibe so i dont click on them. problem solved. its kind of funny to me that the people who have been here for a long time, fell in love with roo, and now dislike most of the changes that superfly has made to the paradise that was roo are considered the trolls. but all the newbs that heard about it roo on the radio or mtv flood the place with ac/dc, gnr, tom jones, coldplay, jay -z, etc... and they arent the trolls???? if these posts were made in 2004 everyone would have screamed at them.."quit trolling with your kanye, metallica, tool spam you custie troll." and then they would ahve been banned. seriously. anyone who was here then knows thats how it would have happened. now its just the norm around here. i guess the mainstream majority is always gonna glom on and take over things. and the rest of us a resloved to be whiney trolls living in the past and stirring up trouble. i guess its all about your perspective.
BTW- those are awesome shoes!! ;D

i don't think it's so much that as people having a superiority complex about roo all together. just because they've been to more or went the first few years they feel they have some monopoly on the roo opinion, and what it "should" be.
personally, i find it funny to watch people debate about the clues or the speculations...as if anyone will REALLY know until the lineup comes out. but that's part of the fun! it just starts to NOT become fun when people go out of their way to make others feel bad. i do think some people are a little overly sensitive, though.

LMFAO!!! Heeheehee!
You KNOW it wouldn't be the same around here without you Dude!
And you are totally right....different views ARE what make this such a neat place...although I TOTALLY will worship Sass AND her shoes till the day I die! ;D
As long as it doesn't get TOO personal...unless it's in a POSITIVE vibe of couse - LOL! But yeah...for the most part I think MOST of us just ignore the things we DON'T like...and throw down on the things we DO care about that we just CAN'T ignore...which is what makes this place special....and let's face it...we wouldn't be here if we didn't CARE...about music...about Roo and about each other!
well i guess when something is what it is and then rapidly changes to a completely different thing there is going to be some complaints. and i dont think superiority is a good word for it. or maybe its the right word. i dont know. i feel like my first roo was far superior over my last roo. i feel like dead heads have a superior taste in music then say a kanye fan or whatever. if nascar fans showed up at talladega and they had a midget wheelbarrow race instead of nascar there would probably be some complaining. are nascar fans superior to midget wheelbarrow racers?? its an unanswerable question... like the chicken and the egg. whos to say whats better or whats superior. but the fact is that its different. its overun by a new crowd thats a different brand of people from a different walk of life. and it dosent jive well with the past. and i think that the reason some of us feel that roo is/was "ours" is because it was built on our attendance, our dollars, our music. they couldnt get these craptacular mainstream bands to come to a no name fest in a field in TN. it was built on the backs and wallets of "us" and then sold out to the mainstream masses.
and the superiority thing goes both ways. there have been plenty of the dead or wsp is boring and they just noodle along and tom petty, the police, tool, kanye, etc... putting on the same show every stop on the tour witht he same setlist played directly off their greatest hits album 40 times in a row is exciting in comparison to a new setlist every stop and a 15 minute morning dew jammed out to melt your face in a different way then the last 40 times you saw it is inferior to these sh!tshows. its definintely a 2 way street.

^^^ hey, i'm definitely a deadhead at heart. i've said a couple times this year that i would LOVE to see roo get back to it's jamband "roots" this year...esp after the kanye debacle last year.
but...all the things you've said about deadheads having better taste in music(which, btw, i don't disagree with ) is still just an opinion...just like everyone else has. i don't think a single person on this site believes they have crappy taste in music, which is why some take it so personally when they get told that they do.
as for being built on your dollars, well, i understand that. those who attended the first 2-3 years are what kept it going, and what helped turn it into what it is today. but don't discount those of us who may have just arrived late, but are still contributing "our dollars" to the fest. maybe it's more mainstream than it's early years, but no one's dollars are any more important if they're all going to continuation of bonnaroo.
but you're right...it is a 2 way street. the thing to remember is that no one's side of the street is any less important than the other.
i guess the point i would make is that i dont view what has happened as a continuation of roo. i view it as the destruction of roo. but i think the decreased ticket sales and increased problems may have sent the message to superfly that they screwed up and this isnt working. but im not even sure about that. i think that superfly sees phish playing as the way for them to make the most cash. if they though jay-z and kid rock would sell more tickets or fetch a higher price you would see them headlining this year. i know its a business but damn. it was BONNAROO!!! it was beyond business and money for the artists and fans. just not for superfly. sure kanye and the police get you mentioned on the radio, mtv, and cnn. and widespread and dr john get no mainstream publicity and even if they were mentioned no one would know who the hell they are. but that was what made bonnaroo what it was. if you werent a part of that scene or community you didnt even know that roo exisited. and yet 80,000 would show up anyhow. it didnt need mtv or the radio. it didnt need tens of thousands of custies on vacation so they could make more profits. it didnt need to charge so much to vend that only the mass produced garbage tourist crap would be available on "shakedown" for 10 times what its worth. it didnt need garnier fructis doing make overs and having showers. it was something entirely different. and to me it was way more important then dollars and publicity. bonnaroo was an escape from the ills of a completely profit and recognition driven society. now its just a part of that society. it used to be a unique street that only existed in a couple of spots on earth a couple weekends a year. and those unique streets that are few and far between are way more important.
and btw why dont they have charmin sponsor some decent bathrooms??? i can pee anywhere but i would seriously be far more likely to pay 5 or 10 bucks to take a dump in a clean air conditioned bathroom then i would for an overpriced burrito or a shower.
and thats pretty much my order for how much i enjoyed them. although 06 was amazing and may have been my favorite year. partially because of the lineup and partialy because of the crew i went with. 07 didnt even seem like roo. well string cheese and mule had that roo feeling to them. but the rest seemed more like an over priced tourist trap state fair concert or something. IMO of course.
Post by GratefulHippie on Jan 3, 2009 16:43:31 GMT -5
06 was my first Roo, and i drove from texas with 9 other friends who were attending their first Roo as well. it was definitely the experience of a lifetime for me, and compared to my only other year(08) it totally owned. i still get giddy when i meet someone who was there to experience radiohead...it's like an instant connection.
but...while 08 didn't have the same "feeling", i never found myself thinking "damn, i kinda wish i wasn't here". i'm just of the belief that you can make it whatever you want. i camped with some people are now some of my closest friends, even if they do live in canada. sigur ros was one of the most epically beautiful shows i've ever attended, and ghostland just about rocked my face off...literally.
so, i agree the crowd makes a huge difference. but, out of 65-80k people, i found plenty of good folk still around
well i would also say that the more you go the more other things bother you too. especially being deathly ill for weeks after roo. getting patted down and pockets emptied to see a show. no glow. over priced crappy shakedown. the most obscenely priced tickets in the industry. the large crowd is a wash. i like it but it can suck. mostly dpending on where your camped. the shady security. after a few years it wears on ya. and after experiencing places like all good, gathering of the vibes, langerado, nelson ledges, etc... it just hard to justify the cost, drive, hassle, and pain and suffering involved with roo if the lineup isnt insane. and for me the lineup has gone down hill every year and 07 and 08 were quantum leaps away from what i like. and i dont mean to imply that roo is not a good time or that there arent good people there. honestly i could go to nascar and drink and have fun partying with people that i would never really hang with other wise. i could go see toby keith and dance around with drunk hot cowgirls no problem. i could go see snoop and smoke blunts and have a blast. i guess im too harsh on things sometimes. its just not for me anymore. not worth the hassle and expense even if it may be some fun. personally id have more fun at the ledges seeing several species on roo weekend plus it costs hundereds less. but if phish plays ill be there. i will be a reluctant attendee. i figure my ticket money is my contribution to the bands. but outside of that i will not spend a penny that superfly collects anything on.
Post by GratefulHippie on Jan 3, 2009 17:03:02 GMT -5
i can agree with that. your first year everything is amazing because you've never experienced anything like it. but, once you're a veteran of festivals, you get to know the little things that stand out about a fest...good and bad. security is definitely shady at roo these days. my friend got her BUBBLES taken away last year...i mean, really?! and the increase in ticket prices is definitely a bummer. one good thing i will say about last year, though, is that i THOROUGHLY enjoyed the smaller numbers. about 65k i think it was? there was a noticeable difference in the ease of navigating the crowds.
depending on how this year goes, it might be my last roo for a while. after last year, i really got the feeling that superfly felt they had something to make up for, and i'm hoping that's the case with this year's lineup. while i had no problems skipping the headliners, i do WANT to be excited by them(ie, Phish, The Dead, etc).
i hear ya. i just accepted that for me roo was 2 latenights and sundays headliner. and thats really all it was to me. i mean ya theres alot of good music during the day but its so brutal that its hard to get into it. so its pretty much 3 shows for me. although grace potter at roo was one of my favorite shows ever. but i would love to go to roo with the excitement of headliners i can get excited about. and not just oh i am excited to see the police or petty but who knows what youll get and then it sux. i mean excited that you know its going to be the show of a lifetime. thats what roo needs to get back. phish and the dead can bring that back. and to stay on the diverse side of things radiohead and dave were AMAZING! id be very happy about either returning to roo. anything but classic rock greatest hits sh!tshows, radio metal and kanye. as much as i have hated on roo in the past couple of years. and as much as i despise superfly it would put a HUGE smile on my face to get out of my car on the farm and let another BONNAROO!!!! yell go. its something i didnt figure id ever do again. but who knows, maybe ill be doing it in june.
Post by GratefulHippie on Jan 3, 2009 17:23:37 GMT -5
well, i'm sure there are plenty of us who would love to see you out there!
but i agree whole-heartedly with your sentiments as far as it being hard to get excited in the heat, or about the police/petty type acts. i'm definitely craving being excited for headliners again.
I've gone every year since '03 and I still love every minute of it. I start planning for next year the minute I leave the Farm on Monday morning. I anxiously await the line-up, shopping, packing, driving and stepping out of the car into that Tennessee sun every year. I can't imagine a place that I would rather be than there. And even though "Roo's changed" as so many people say, it's still my fave place on Earth.
I've met kids that some of you would call "custies" and they were awesome, and I've met kids who are supposedly the people who "built" Bonnaroo and they were complete jack-offs. And, hell, if you met ME right now, you probably wouldn't think that is gonna be my 7th Roo. But, that's the thing, it takes all kinds, and I think that is the spirit of roo more than anything. It's bringing together a shit ton of like minded people, and hey, we are all there for the music in one way or another. And that is what we have to remember. Some people like Kanye and some people like Mule, and there's nothing saying you can't like them both. Thats what is so awesome about Roo, anything you want is there for 4 days. And for the most part, everyone is happy and excited and loving every minute of it.
I don't care who they book, I will always be there every year. Because it's not just the music, it's just the Roo. and I can't think of anything that makes me more happy to be alive than to look out from the roof of my Jeep and see 80,000 people all grooving together for a weekend in June.
I love Roo, but I dislike how much the hippies hate the custies and vice versa. It's like, come on, I thought you guys were all about peace and love, can't you accept those who are different than you? Everyone is there for their love of music; you should let that bring you together, not tear you apart.
If having worked hard at my job so I could have some extra spending money for Shakedown vendors, corn, food, beer and the like makes me a custie, well, so be it. To me, there's no shame in that. It's more honorable than sneaking in, or mooching off the kindness of others, or selling corn to make back the cost of your ticket.
^^Thanks for that, and I agree with you 100%. And you deserve some karma, too. It's all about the music, and when we are all shakin' and grooving together, that's all there is.
And by most people's standards I'm prolly a custie too.
We should make "Camp Custieroo" and have our own flag and everything!

custies arent hated. unless they play rap or some horrible poop in the lot. some of my best friends are custies. lot kids draw most of the actual dislike. although some of them are cool ass people too. custies are kinda like polish people. we all bust on them but few of us hate polish people.
