They need to find a way to make an EZ-up style thing that can easily travel by air. I mean....I guess I could check the item but the ones I have now are a bitch to transport. Can't someone invent something so I can continue to be lazy.
I think we have enough communal shade so you can use one of my ez ups for over your tent. It has to be one of my pink ones though. I won't even charge you $25 like that other guy.
Awesome. Yea, I think people said we should be good with EZ-ups/canopies when I was asking about having some shade over my sleeping tent. Should be able to figure something out. I'd just like to have a compact, easily-transported shade tent. That and a small, easily-transported hammock. Those would be ideal.

$50 shipped for a 10x10 can't be beat
The free shipping helped me finally make up my mind, thanks! And thanks to @clairity. This was the only thing I needed this year that costs more than a case of beer, since my shitty generic canopy was pretty torn up and would not fold down after the rain on Sunday night last year at Roo. I wanted another E-Z Up Sierra II to go with the one I have, but since they have been discontinued they are getting scarce. So it was this one or the house brand from Academy (which some have said is just like an E-Z Up Sierra II), and I decided to gamble on this one.
I'll check it out when it comes and report back with my initial impressions. Hooray, there will be shade for hanging and shade for sleeping.
I am a terrible person and never reported back on the Academy EZup. It's been a crazy month and we just got together to dry run our camp stuff a few days ago, but we're all systems go! The hot pink EZup is super sassy and it seems pretty sturdy - we were dry running in decently gusty wind, on concrete (so not even remotely staked down) and it didn't try to drift too far. I think that plus the 10" Coleman stakes will be a match made in Bonnaroo heaven!

Got my canopy in yesterday, set it up. I like it, only nag is that there's no where to hang any tapestries on it.. unlike the EZ Ups that have the accordion-style frame on the inside.. This one has the frame on the outside. But I can figure out a way to rig it up. It does have a nifty hook at the center to hang lights or a lantern and pockets on two of the inside legs.

Went to dicks sporting goods this afternoon planning on getting one of their 10x10 canopies (64sqft shade) for $50 but walked out with their 11x11 canopies (124sq ft shade) for $60 on clearance, limited supply from twhat I was told. Looks legit. Will comment more after we use it this weekend for a dmb show and beach trip :-)

I keep reading to only buy EZ-Up brand canopies, as they are far more sturdy and dependable. Is it worth saving ~$50 and getting one of these lesser-known brand name canopies from Dicks/Academy/etc.? Seems smart to invest a little more into one of these, as they seem pretty essential.

Depends on how often you plan to use it. I have a camping tent that I bought cheap because I only use it for festivals. If I used it more I'd invest a bit more. If you're only going to use it a couple of times a year the cheaper ones may be alright but they definitely are a little weaker than EZ-up.

the non EZ up brands work great...until there is a lot of wind or rain, in my experience. you could get an off brand and use it for years in the right conditions. or you could get an off brand, have a bad windy day on its first weekend of use, and have to buy a new one next year. Its a gamble, safe bet EZup. We have two we have been using the last 4-5 years that are still going strong.
another thing, that may not bother you, is many of the off brand legs start splaying out, creating a larger footprint, whereas the EZ ups generally stay pretty square. This is mostly important when you are putting a few together to make a large shade area, as the off brands don't really fit as well. dont be the one with the mega blocks at the lego party.

That's not just a non-EZ up thing (to have angled legs). I've bought the 10'x10' from Sears (and seen it reposted several times over the years) for the Sierra II model. I prefer the straight leg too but that has seemed to have a good price tag so went with that. Right now, Sears has it for $60 with free store pickup and also a 12x12 version for $90. At some point, wind is wind and it may bend your canopy regardless, but I do seem to hear/see better reviews with EZ Up's brand. I had a First Up too I like, but I can't find it anymore, especially at the same price. $50-60 is pretty good. I'd read reviews if buying a different brand, at least. But you can find an EZ Up brand for similar pricing. Just be aware, regardless what brand you get, the sizing may mean the bottom of the legs vs the top of the canopy if they have angled legs. My Sierra II is a "10'x10'" but that's referring to when the legs are completely out at the bottom. Top may be more like 8'x8'.

Got my Quest canopy from Dicks today. Seems alright, same size as the 10x10 E-Z Up Sierra II that a lot of us have. Construction is similar, although I'm about 90% as confident of this one. Definitely better than the $35 no-name canopy that serves me for 2 Roos and a dozen other uses before giving up the ghost on the farm last year.
It does not have pull rings at the top corners but the little push buttons are easy enough. Only two height settings which aren't that far apart. And the top doesn't seem quite as nice but should be fine. The bag is decent, and overall I'm pleased initially.

If you are putting multiple EZ-Ups together to form a campsite, put a large tarp over the top off all of the EZ-Ups. Not only does it solve the problem of unifying slightly-different leg-angles, but it keeps you from having a "drainage channel" down the middle of your site, and makes them more waterproof.
This guy is the man, even if you don't want a huge campsite, all the stuff he does is just practical advice out of doing 'Roo for so many years.

My Coleman canopy is sturdy as fuck. There are def brands that are better than others, but it's not all about just EZup.

I'm sure everyone has bought their tent by now but for those who haven't heads up on that ozark trail 4 person tent Walmart has in their stores. i bought it way back in end of march and had put it away till today i decided to set up for a test. first the tent is made for two average people. i placed my single blow up bed in there and that takes about half if not more of the tent. the rods looks like they could break if you aren't careful while setting up. I'm way past the return days the give you so I'm gonna roll with this tent and cross my fingers. i still have my ez-up so if it fails i still have some shade

Counterpoint: Mine has survived three bonnaroos and is none the worse for wear. And all tents are fast and loose with the "X person" thing

Yeah, generally speaking divide the manufacturer's number in half for a realistic capacity.
It seems like walmart has a bunch of camping deals in their stores that aren't online. I haven't done much research, but from what I've seen in this thread they have some good prices for Ozark trail. If you like that brand I would check out Walmart. I got a 10x10 Ozark trail canopy for just $50. I set it up and it seems pretty sturdy, but only time will tell.
