They did play the unannouced set to open the what stage on sunday of 2002 I was at the show I was walking by and thinking nobody is scheduled on and somebody told me thats Galactic and I though geez they just played a 4 hour midnight show like 8 hours ago, I was at Moe so I watched the show and enjoyed it, by the way I'm going to see Galactic for FREE tomorrow night at the variety playhouse in atlanta getting a ticket through volunteering for Green Apple festival.
That explains it then -- not something that was actually scheduled. I wish I had known.
Portugal the Man said that they were playing before Yeasayer on Thursday. Yeasayer said they believe they are playing after Bruce and before MGMT on Saturday (Late Night). With as crowded as Saturday Late Night is, people generally expect Yeasayer to be on Thursday.
2002 was Galactic Late Night but I think I remember hearing somewhere that they played a bonus unannounced set to open the day on the What Stage that year. I remember hearing that somewhere, I just don't remember where.

Please post about that show in the Galactic thread. No one has been able to really say if they are playing more hip hop than funk lately. I have a feeling on Friday, it will come down to Galactic or Erykah Badu (somewhat concerned about the sound bleed between What and Which if I'm too far back on the Which as well). I've never seen either so I'm trying to get a feel for which one I'd have a better time at. Thanks.
they're playing more funk--a quick look at etree (http://db.etree.org/bs_d.php?artist_key=57) will show that. However, I wouldn't discount them bringing out a shitload of MCs, especially if they get a late night

i was told the only guests they are going to have is some new orleans horns.
just wondering, but is there any proof that Femi Kuti and King Sunny Ade are late night sets, or is that just wishful thinking? Because honestly, after listening to them, I view them as What Stage afternoon bands. Kinda chill, sit-in-the-sun music. If that was so, it would also free up some late night slots. I hope they play in the afternoon. Both acts are cool, but they would be a waste of some good late night trippy, funky (Galactic?) stuff. Plus, Saadiq totally wont be What Stage. Which Stage at best, and early in the afternoon
PS - Word up to all you guys that keep up with the updates. Awesome work!
Oh, and I'm really thinking the overall theme of the weekend will be Afro-Beat, so if Something Else features the Afro-beat acts, that frees up a lot of slots on the other stages, possibly even making room for additions...being Devil's advocate feels REALLY good right now! I CANT WAIT FOR ROO!!!!!!

I believe Femi Kuti comfirmed he was a late night on his myspace, not sure about Sunny Ade. I like the idea for an african themed something else, I think that would be awsome and free up some late night slots for Galactic & Animal Collective.
Femi Kuti's myspace page says "Jun 12 2009 12P." I'm guessing that P stands for PM, right? 12pm is noon, not midnight.

2009 SUMMER TOUR INCLUDES BONNAROO! Femi Kuti & the Positive Force are returning for their second appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, TN... if you didn't catch Femi's epic set at the '04 festival where even giant mud puddles couldn't stop everyone from dancing, be there for his not to be missed late night set at this year's festival!
Looks like Femi Kuti doesn't know the difference between 12am and 12pm.
The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, states:
To avoid confusion, the correct designation for twelve o'clock is 12 noon or 12 midnight. Alternatively, the twenty-four-hour-clock system may be used. The abbreviation a.m. stands for ante-meridiem (before the Sun has crossed the line) and p.m. for post-meridiem (after the Sun has crossed the line). At 12 noon the Sun is at its highest point in the sky and directly over the meridian. It is therefore neither "ante-" nor "post-".[8]

Ok, but his myspace page says 12pm, not 12 midnight. 12:01am is before the Sun has crossed the line, and 12:01pm is after the Sun has crossed the line. So either he has it wrong, or he's planning to play for one minute at noon, then take a break until his late night set.

Most of the world uses a 24 hour clock. I'm not sure where Femi Kuti is from, but there's a good chance it's a country that uses a 24 hour clock. Using 12 am or 12 pm is very confusing for anyone to interpret, esp. someone from a country that uses a 24 hour clock. It would be very easy for whoever said that they would play at 12 pm to have made a mistake. If people would just say 12 noon or 12 midnight, or 12:01 am or 12:01 pm, there would be no doubt about what was meant. I have no idea whether Femi Kuti is playing at noon or midnight.
EDIT: After reading sangreal's post above, I'd say they're playing at midnight.

I believe he's from Nigeria. I didn't click the link on his myspace page until sangreal's post, which clearly says he's playing latenight, so the 12pm thing is most likely a mistake. No biggee.
I was just joking about Femi not knowing the difference between pm and am -- he's a pretty brilliant guy. I guess I should have put a little laughing emoticon at the end of my 10:03 post like I did at the end of the last one.
its hard to tell cuz they really havent stated if the byrne stage will be an existing stage or a brand new one. if it is new, where the hell would they put it
ok i had asked yeasayer if they could confirm what they told me earlier about playing late night with mgmt and they said yes. so i guess portugal the man was wrong. maybe ptm is really playing sat. in the same tent as yeasayer/mgmt?

OK so I jsut read the article about David Byrne curating and it refers to it as a tent. Someone suggested that perhaps some (or all) of the Something Else artists have already been listed on the lineup. If they did an african theme on Friday and bluegrass on Saturday, that would make it much more manageable. I guess we'll have to see what is announced on Thursday.

Wow, looks like Volta may get the shaft. I don't know though, who knows, until this David Byrne bit clears up, I don't think anyone will really know.
Also, anyone thinking Byrne will be late night on the Which Stage now? I really don't see him missing any sets on his own stage (but maybe).
