My brother is in nutrition, and he was telling me that an average female who is losing weight shouldnt be on more than 70 or so g of protein??? I mean, im all for taking more, I just didnt know if it was worth it... for example, you know when you take a multivitamin, or you take more than 1000mg of VC a day, you just pee it out? Well if it costs me money to get all this protein, and it's not getting processed right, I dont want to bother... so if I should take more i'll do it! i just need someone to tell me to do it.
You hit the nail on the head when you said average. Everyone is different. For example, I don't know what you weight, but for me, me base lean mass when I started was 185 lbs. That's without lifting, eating poorly, drinking a few bottles of bourbon a week, etc. I am willing to bet that that is well above you and it is probably close to double the average woman. Hence, I am probably taking more protein than I can use, but since I always have some in the stream, it is always there. Plus, since protein is tough to break down, my trainer and I figured I could use the extra as an appetite supressent. It works better than anything else I have tried. Also, it is true you per out a lot of the vitamena you take in initially, but as you get use to taking them, your body uses more and more. You will always void some, and in fact, if you are not, then you probably don't have enough in you. Having said all of this, vitamins, protein, and supplements take money. I just got sick of feeling puffy, so I cut out some stuff that was bad for me and reinvested here. One less bottle of bourbon a week pays for everything I take during that week and it is easier to work out.

Most nutritionists still adhere to the American Dietetic Assoc. standards. They actually raised their protein suggestions a few years back, recognizing the benefits of proteins. Excess carbs from the sources that Americans typically choose are one of the reasons we have such rampant diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and heart disease. They tend to poo-poo higher protein diets. As long as one's kidneys are healthy, it is fine, and many of us in the medical field feel it is very beneficial.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Stupid carbs. They are like kryptonite to those who have a last name ending in a vowel. I swear, I could eat pounds of pasta every day and be a happy man. Except I would look like the stay puff marshmellow man.
Seriously, I thought I had gotten a lot of carbs out of my diet, but since I started MyFitPal last week, those bastards sneak into everything.

It feels like forever ago since I've been in here. It's been about a year since I started jogging again. This time last year I could hit about a mile or on a good day a mile and a half. Now I'm finally starting to hit 10 miles on my long runs!
Re: Carbs and stuff. In one of my magazines they recommend eating about .7 grams of protein compared to the weight you're shooting for. So someone looking to weigh around 150 should be eating like 100 grams according to that measure. As for carbs if you're doing long runs you'll want to make certain you're getting enough. I got in trouble for not having enough in my diet for days when I run a long time. if you're going to jog for an hour or more you need to add 200 cal and 50 g of carbs during that run for a 10 minute mile pace. I think that's two gel packs.
Thank you for sending me here! Dinner was delicious. I got the herbed tomato, sundried tomato, and pesto pizza and added chicken to it. Washed it down with a Highland Black Mocha Stout. I also stole a couple of my friends pepperoni rolls. Not exactly the most diet friendly dinner, but it's better than what I had for lunch. (A 3 pack of Zingers, but it was only 440 calories! ) I enjoyed my day off yesterday and I'm back on track today.

HA! All 3 of my names end in a vowel, so I can TOTALLY relate!
But since starting MFP (OK, caveat: since SIGNING UP FOR BUT STILL NOT YET USING!) last week, I've developed an immunity to carbkryptonite. In fact, today I ignored 2 boxes of Girl Scout cookies in my office and a plate of chocolate frosted brownies left over from a meeting.
That said... I've always been more of a salty carb girl. Give me fresh garlic bread with a dipping oil or pita chips...or spicy Thai kettle chips (omg, those things are like CRACK, I tell 'ya!) then it's game over. Those things are going in.my.belly!!!
Does anyone else keep a photo journal of their progress? Or do you just measure - and if so, how often? I don't own a scale; never have & never plan to. (No need, since my doctor weighs me monthly.) Instead, I take physical measurements (usually weekly; sometimes monthly) to gauge my progress. Last summer when I lost 21lbs & 17 inches in 6 weeks (<1Kcal/day), it was far more inspiring. Plus it helped me track which areas shrink faster (hips, thighs) and which areas are more stubborn (pecs, quads) and therefore require more concentration. How can you know that if you only weigh yourself? Just a thought...
Thanks for the tips on the protein y'all. I'll increase a bit I think.
And yeah, Holls, the trainer does our measurements every month. It's pretty enlightening. I recommend it too for anyone who wants that extra motivation.
In related news, I was called a really not nice name in the chat tonight by an asshole stranger. Even more motivation. Quacker.

I have found that the people who say something about the way others look are the most insecure with themselves. A lot of the time, they do it to hide some deeper emotional or mental insecurity of your own. I have never met you, except on this board, but the strength you have shown here in this thread is an inspiration to me, and I am sure many others. Quack them and keep up the amazing work!

For those in the MyFitnessPal group, I'm down 4 lbs since dieting seriously and it looks like you all are getting the hang adapting to this healthy lifestyle.
For protein questions you should try to get as much protein as body weight.
I keep progress pictures of myself and will share in June.
YEAH!!! thanks Viking and LLL. Just another notch on the reasons to keep it up board.
So this protein bit - Im gonna up it from one scoop to 2 of the supplement Im on. That, in addition to actual lean meats should get me there. And I did talk to my trainer about the raspberry ketones. He said it's just another boost, no magic bullet, to metabolism burners and go for it if I wanted. So Im on 2 burners now, the protein and my normal multivitamins.
And my hair appt was canceled today so a gym visit is in my near future.

So I have been going to the gym for about 2 months now twice a week in the mornings, and i never really saw progress in any weight loss (i was always fluctuating somewhere in 196). i went this morning and last week i weighed 196.8 and this week i weight 195.2! it may seem small but it's the first significant change since ive started ;D
Im ready to kill it this week. Official weigh in/measurments are april 4 - and im looking to hit that 2lb a week goal. This morning was hardcore abs/core. on the yoga balls, doing pushups, doing mountain climbers, doing leg raises... after the first 20 minutes i felt like my lower abs were trying to rip themselves from my body. I was like, UGGGH/YESSSSS.

I was wayyyyy too lazy this weekend. Didn't over eat or eat badly surprisingly. Munched a little bit due to the state i was in late night, but normally just pretzels, (whole wheat pretzels) so i don't consider it a let down. And i worked out satuday, but not sunday. I guess sunday was just bad, laziest sunday EVER! Made me wake up today in a crappy mood. It's amazing how when i've been in a routine for a while, when i take a day off, just how poopy i feel the next day. Anyway, back on it this week, and won't be slacking like i did, i don't want to feel this way again. Glad to see you all have been doing well! Keep it up!!!

Remember diet is just as important. Try to get to the gym at least 3 days a week.
I've been splitting like this Monday: lift Tuesday: swim Wednesday: lift Etc...

I was also lazy this weekend, but I ate pretty well, except for the cans of cider (which are 250 calories each.....). Back on it today though, and I fly to Long Beach on Wednesday where I plan to be doing a lot of walking.
My weekend was an average weekend. Meals were good/decent, but not great. Exercise was ok. Too much drinking. Weekends are my downfall, for sure!
I didn't go to the gym this AM because I had a HORRIBLE night's sleep last night and needed the extra sleep. I was wide awake and ready to go, but Monday-Wednesday are exhausting day for me anyway due to my schedule, so I figured the extra sleep was needed to start my week off right.
I think that I am going to limit my alcohol more. I haven't been really, and have been losing, but I think it will be a good change. At least for awhile. In addition to the obvious caloric reasons, I think it will allow me more time for gym/walks/hikes/etc, as well as save money. Over the next month or so, I have taken off a bunch of Cheesecake shifts for holidays/concerts/ baby shower... and that will seriously affect my income. If I want to feel worry free when the festivals roll around. I need to be good for the next month and a half! So now that I have rambled, the question is, how should I limit it? Should I say that I can only have so many oz per week or should I just say that I can have one night of fun and leave it at that?
PS Mayo- If I was there I would have FLIPPED out on that guy. I am extremely mild-tempered.. My car got towed Friday night (a story for a different day) and everyone was shocked about how calm I was through it all and the next day. But when someone attacks a friend. Oh shiznit goes down.
PPS Holls- I cannot wait to see that photo gallery, but the warning that pops up makes me scared to see it at work!! I don't keep track of measurements but I have always meant to. I started weights and such this weekend, so I think I officially NEED to measure myself if I am going to be building muscle!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I finally made it back to the gym after the weekend. It felt really awesome once I was done. It's pretty rare that I take off 3 days in a row, but a wedding out of town and then a drunk Sunday night got me there. No biggie.
My new apartment has also caused me a little problem. I think my first bus is at 6am which is losing 20 minutes from my old routine. I want those 20 minutes!!
Seems like we've got a good crowd that's still at it. Any Chicagoans doing any runs or anything soon? I'm only signed up for the soldier field 10, but I want to squeeze a 5k in soonish.

I am in Chicago, but I hate running for the sake of running. Sorry not to be able to join you on that one.
Also, the plague swept through our house this weekend, with both kids going down, and my wife on Sunday. I had it yesterday, so I have now been off 4 days. Luckily, this week is my rest week in P90X, but I still feel bad missing those days.
nice job everyone - it's good to come in here and be able to say, "I totally flopped this weekend" and there's only encouragement to get back at it from everyone!
Thanks Bonz - 'nother story for another day - we can trade! and you tell me bout the car!
Today has been good so far - workout done, foods in order, killing the nalgene. And its FREAKING. BEAUTIFUL outside. may hit the pavement before book club tonight. woot!

mayonaise: totally off track but I crack up every time I see your signature
On track: Getting off track for one or two days on the weekend isn't as bad as it may feel, it's just getting back on track the following days that is crucial/difficult.
As a personal aside, I wrestled in high school, and after not eating things for 4 years, I truly enjoy food (maybe a little too much), and sort of have a distorted self-image of what is "healthy looking". I'm out of shape (to me) but most people think I'm being girly when I say that I need to lose some weight.
Bringing it all together, my advice/words of wisdom (That even I fail to follow although I know it to be true): don't overindulge in any one thing, eat what you like, but make sure you're not a couch potato. Also, become comfortable looking like "you" in the mirror with a shirt off.
oh and wlviking, I hate running too because I get bored, but I have to say that I feel best after a good solid run, even if I have to split hairs to make myself do it in the first place!
