Mayo, I thought of YOU when I saw this! (not because you're the A.D.D. ditz that I am, but because I can totally see you counting in German while thinking about gastropubs & The Tudors!)
Well I usually attempt to start my 'get ready for bonnaroo' workout regimen by January 1st, but it never works out that way. I started this year a couple of weeks ago and thus far it hasn't been to bad. The goal I keep in mind is endurance and stamina because if I call it a 'diet' I will never stick with it. I try to walk outside a minimum of 3 miles a day, do P90X at home, and eat really well. I have no idea if I have lost any weight but I feel tons better, am less stressed and sleep better. Those benefits alone are worth it. For those who have posted, you guys are doing great and it is a hard road but worth it. Best of luck to all!

AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY ME. Although - I'd say that it's also me about 80% of my day not just at yoga. (the other 20% I'd like to think Im focused on work). Fill in the "pugs" balloons with "Randy," and drawing with reading or crafting, and this is ME. ....I absolutely count in German, pretty much anytime I count anything.
LOL!!! Good one Holls ;D
Related News: This morning I weighed myself, and it's the lowest I've weighed in a whole YEAR.

I've lost most of the weight I gained from quitting smoking. A lot of it was just eating to replace the smoking and then my metabolism slowing down. I also was eating a snickers bar every other night and cokes on the alternate nights So, I have cut out deserts/candies/drinks except alcohol and cut out the smoking except for going to shows. Honestly, this makes me even more excited to go to shows and events because I know I can let loose even more. I've got 2lbs till my lowest, 4lbs till first goal and 9lbs till Roo goal
Also the encouragement via this thread, chats, and pms is amazing! <love>
Been running about a mile and a half every other day for the past two weeks. It's crazy how fast your body can revert back to what it used to do all the time. Used to run in high school and could go for hours but when I started back up I couldn't even make it past the end of the street. Now, I'm up to 3/4 of a mile without having to start walking, and I smoke a pack a day. My body just feels so much better now that I'm actually working some muscles. More limber, more energized and I've lost 6 lbs in these two weeks, down to 174. Need to find a way to get rid of this beer belly though. Mayonnaise and soda is almost completely out of my diet. Even though I miss both of them dearly.

Congrats to everyone! I'm glad to see that this thread is still going strong and that y'all are working towards your goals. I didn't even bother to weigh myself this morning because I woke up bloated about 2 days early. I guess I'll see how things are going when I know I'm not carrying around an extra 5 pounds of water.

I need a good kick in the behind when it comes to my diet/exercise routine. I started off the year wonderfully - exercising in some way at least 5 times a week, doing the c25k thing, adding more fruits and veggies to my diet, and watching my carb intake (but not cutting them out completely). And then I starting having issues with shin splints which threw me off my exercise schedule for a couple days. Unfortunately at that time I discovered that the stores were stocking up on my favorite candies (they only come out at Easter so it's hard for me to pass up) but I got back to exercising although not as intense as before. Then I got a stomach virus almost 2 weeks ago and I haven't exercised a bit since.
I know it's a lot of excuses and it really bothers me that I do that. As much as I do want to lose weight and get healthy, every time I hit a roadblock it gets harder for me to get back on track. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how I can keep myself from falling into these ruts? Anything would be so appreciated!
Hello all! I wasn't at work yesterday and i spent my ENTIRE morning catching up on the whole alpha debate thing. Oye! I need an aspirin. ANYWAY! Glad to see you all going strong and to see some new names in here!!
My news: I signed up for my first 5K! It's the Color Run and it's on May 26th (and YES, I am still up for the Nashville Color Run in October too!). I'm excited!!
I am feeling really amped up because I feel like I have finally gotten to a weight were I am noticing a definite increase from attention from guys, more compliments from coworkers, etc. Game on! Let's keep doing it!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Hi SJ!, may I call you SJ?
You know I think having a partner makes getting on track so much easier. I go with my former roommate a couple of times a week. We dont even work out together or leave together, but we meet and walk over together. Having to cancel on someone makes it easier to get in gear. Or if you dont have anyone to meet up with and can afford it, consider a trainer for a couple of months. They'll teach you a lot and it's definite motivation to put that money to good use. Once you're on a roll for a while it's so much easier to get back into it.
Re: shin splints, it's definitely helpful to lift weights or do other leg exercises that are low impact and build that muscle up. Doing squats, lunges or leg press, really any of those will reduce the likelihood of shin splints. If you're running on a treadmill, put a little bit of an incline on there. 1% or 2%. It makes it a little less of a harsh impact when you've got that going on.
Just stick with it for those first couple of months and maybe you wont really see the difference but you'll feel it and that's a HUGE motivator for me.
Good luck!! Keep at it! Oh, and stop by here. We are always chitchatting away. It's nice hearing about everyone's successes and struggles. This way we're in it together.

This saved me on Friday. I was definitely a little hungover, but I had plans to meet a friend there. It forced me to go and I was SO happy that I did!

Hey there SleepyJean/SJ So in highschool many many many moons ago, I was busy working out in someway about 6 days a week - I did competitive ballet, and I also ran cross country. Both take a real toll on your shins. My senior year I got shin splints so badly, every day it was like someone trying to carve off my shin muscles, and I kept 2 bags of frozen peas in my chem teachers mini fridge just for after practice. At the time though - i was young and just powered through.
Shin splints never really go away, so when I tried to get into running again over the years, they come back full force and I'd quit. Just quit entirely.
NOW - I've been at this bootcamp thing for 6 months, and in the beginning it was baaaad. But I'd ice afterwards (under my desk at work!), and make adjustments at class, and would do stretching exercises at home at night. And now, after many lunges, squats, and low/no-impact leg exercises, I can barely feel them - and that's only on bad days. Chico hit it spot on - you have to strengthen those muscles back up with low/no-impact leg stuff. You can get some resistance bands (http://tinyurl.com/8y6nch7) from any sporting store, and while you watch tv at night, put your foot in one, hold the sides tight and draw the alphabet with your toe by flexing your foot. It's like a miracle worker.
As far as buying candy - DO IT! You can't deny your self sometimes, just make amends by having a light dinner, or running that extra 5 minutes, or walking an extra 15. I love candy. ;D
And getting sick? that one is hard. You feel puny and can be afraid that once you get over it if you go hard at workout you can send yourself back into sickness. You just have to say, "NOW. NOW im going to workout again." and then get up and do it. You've already got a great plan!!! fruits! veggies! c25K! low carbs! 5days-a-week movement! you just have to start. and know that you will mess up again - you WILL! we ALL DO! but we just start over. EVERY DAY can be a fresh start. It doesnt have to be Monday. It doesnt have to be the 1st of the month. I screw up today - TOMORROW is my fresh start.

SJ works!
Thanks for all the great advice! Especially regarding the shin splints. All I had really heard before in terms of prevention was just to stretch but that clearly wasn't helping so as much as I hate squats and lunges, I'll be giving those a try!
From reading through the posts in this thread I'm so happy to see that everyone here is supportive. I've tried Weight Watchers a couple times and one time I decided I would take advantage of their message boards - holy crap that was a mistake. I couldn't believe how often a lot of these grown women on the boards would tear someone down who had the courage to admit that they made a bad food choice that day, especially when they were asking for advice on how to get back on track or something. People on there were just plain mean sometimes! Hopefully in the years since I belonged to their boards they've gotten better but I'm still not going to be going back anytime soon so I'm just really glad that everyone here is nice!

So keep coming back here! We hold each other up
Yeah, that's exactly the problem! When I was in college, I had to stay on campus for a summer so to keep myself busy I signed up for an extra gym class - tennis. Unfortunatley with the summer schedule it meant playing tennis 2 hours a day, 5 days a week and after getting shin splits, I unfortunately couldn't let them heal or whatever because I was being graded and I had to go to class and play every day. It was torture! So the pain flares up every time I try to be a runner but this last time was just bad. I'm totally stopping at Target to pick up some resistance bands after work after your suggestion though!
Oh, regarding the low/no-impact leg exercises, would you recommend using handheld weights for more resistance or is that kind of unnecessary at this point?
Thanks all for your encouragement! I think I might actually swap watching reruns of RuPaul's Drag Race for going out for a run tonight!

We are here for you, SJ! I've dabbled in the WW boards and those people are brutal. Truly they are. <shudder>

I just don't understand how WW allows that kind of behavior to happen on their boards. It wouldn't be tolerated in a meeting! I guess maybe a lot of the users are insecure and take it out on others since it's the internet and there's no real-life consequence for them but it just makes me so sad and angry that these bullies (for lack of a better term) are constantly belittling people who want help in what is supposed to be a supportive environment.

To preface, I have never done it, but what I understand from someone who has is that it gets super competitive and almost cultish. A lot of people in there with low self esteem who feel knocking someone else down highlights how good they are. Basically what my friend said was that there was no room for mistakes in her program and if you were not on board, there were a lot of mean people.

That's EXACTLY how it is, unfortunately. I thankfully never managed to receive the wrath but I had a weight loss pen pal that I met through the boards when I first joined who made the mistake of admitting that she had gone to White Castle the night before and that it made her sick. The responses she got to that were INSANE! Things like "I'm glad you got sick; you should know better." and name-calling...I was just floored by that.
That's a good point that you guys have about the low self-esteem. That is probably it. When I was active, I joined an emailing group too. There were about 8 of us. I am friends with around 6 of them on FB and two of whom I "talk" with (ie. comment on status', etc.) often. They aren't all bad, but they have many bad eggs.
PS. I am going to happy hour and will probably have too much wine and can guarantee that I am ordering this delish margherita flatbread. If it makes me feel fat tomorrow or makes me miss the gym, make sure y'all tell me that I deserve it!

hahahaha - YEAH Bonzai! - you DESERVE TO FEEL FAT!!! hahahaa!
What craziness. I can believe people would be that way, but it still floors me, too. Bonz - I'll be at happy hour as well, and I will def be drinking my fav cider and hittin up some apps that have cheese. So there. WE CAN FEEL FAT TOGETHER TOMORROW! (but still dont miss the gym. just say go.)

I totally want to do one of these. There's one in Georgia in March 2013. Think it's possible to train up to this in one year given I am utterly and completely out of shape now?

I actually had a group all lined up to go to the original in the UK a few years back, but we could not get the funds together. Now that I have the funds, I am not sure I want to do it anymore. HOWEVER, I could be convinced of anything once I start drinking. I will never do a run, but this is a race I could get behind.

They have them all over the US with 4 different levels of difficulty (3, 8, 12 and Death Race). They're not too expensive either. The GA race is a 3 mile event, and registration is $60-$100 depending on when you sign up.

I am interested. Have to see what is involved. The one in the UK is probably similar to the Death Race, since it involved frozen ropes, and jumping into thron bushes, etc.
