Why is it that bad food tastes so good? I mean, if I liked some of this "healthy" food, life would be easier, but I cannot live without the joy of eating a cheeseburger.
I think the healthy eaters just pretend to like what they are eating so they can feel better than us.

I know right WLV?! bad food tastes sooooo good. ...though, I will say that I have started enjoying the actual taste of "good" food too. But not more than a cheeseburger sandwich. ;D
I think my new goal is 15 lbs by Christmas (that includes the lbs i put on after Roo). I think it's highly possible. I just have to get my bod back in burn mode.

Why? Because fat= flavor! I actually rarrrreeelllyyyy eat burgers. They don't often appeal to me. Unless they are posted on Inforoo right before my lunch break...
I actually really like a lot of vegetables. I practically live on spinach and carrots. BUT I also looooove my pizza and nachos.

That sounds about right and that miiiight be my end point too if I make it. Before I fell off of the wagon, I was thinking 10-15 lbs more to go. There are 5 weeks till Moog. Down at least 8 by then? Ready. Set. GOOOO

OKAY! 5 weeks till Moog, Moog goal is 8 lbs!!! I'm with you Bonz!!! Then another 8 before Christmas.... After losing NINE in May alone, I feel like these are lazy goals. But I'm just not in the same 6 day/week, sometimes 2x a day place as I was then. And I'd like to hit goals I can actually achieve, then feel really good about. ...So maybe I'll just have to get back into the 5x/week, 2x/day for a couple days routine.
As far as a FINAL goal - I still have a total of say... 25 to go. And that's being really realistic (i'd love another 10 after that, but I'd be pushin' it). I def know that I'll make it. I'd love to do it before my birthday in February. So there I go - Final goal - February 2013 - 25 less than I am right now.

it is soooo good. Do what I do, no cheese and usually I replace my fries with a side salad. So that makes it ok right? And the beers dont count.
sounds like everyone is ready and rawrin' to go! Some of you I'll be seeing in October for the Color Run!

Yay for everybody workin on their goals!
Speaking of cheeseburgers... I'd recommend Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes and The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson. I found my way to them via finding out I have gluten intolerance, but the science may be interesting for anybody I think.
They advocate--with somewhat different details--more (healthy, good quality) fats and less refined sugars and carbohydrates, and there's a lot of new research pointing towards the idea that some people may lose more weight, faster on higher protein and/or fat. Yay organic cheeseburgers without the bun!
I don't think an all-bacon diet is gonna make anybody healthy, but we do eat quite a bit of grassfed, organic meats and eggs and its helped us both lose weight and I didn't have to give up fat.
Of course, everybody's different...I do poorly on both very low carb and very low fat AND I'm a special flower because of the gluten thing... but I do think upping protein and/or fat can really work for some people!

^^^Yes ma'am! I didnt lose ANYTHING even with the workouts until I upped the protein by a substantial amount. I don't generally enjoy pasta or bread, so it's easy for me to cut out those carbs, but keeping the fats to "good" fats is the hard part. I. Love. Cheese. ...andanythingpotatolikefriesaremyFAV.
I have considered attempting the Paleo diet - it's mostly what I eat anyway, but with a framework to follow so I'm not just cramming burgers and bacon in my face with reckless abandon. I haven't decided yet. Last night I had a delightful spinach omelette with gruyere cheese. Didn't even salt it! I was proud of myself.

I am going to significantly up my protein and reduce my overall portion size. Roughly 40% of my diet is protein anyways, and since good meat is so cheap here in Chicago, it is either in lean beef or pork or chicken. Usually I go up to ~50% protein by adding shakes instead of a lunch, with 30% carbs and 20% fat. I know my body does not absorb all the protein, but itis a great appetite suppressant and my body does not try and store it like it does with sugars or fats.

I think I'm really repetitive on diet. So I'll break it down:
Breakfast: a bowl of cereal (Special K or Total), non-workout days: a banana or apple, 2 cups of milk (in addition to cereal), workout days: egg white scramble or protein shake and fruit Morning Snack: Greek yogurt or apple, diet coke Lunch: Sandwich, no cheese, no mayo or stir fried chicken and white rice or salad w/non-fat dressing Afternoon snack: beef jerky or apple or nothing Dinner: chicken breast or turkey sandwich and 2 servings of vegetables. If eating out, no cheese, fries, white sauces etc. Evening snacks: 4 oreos or less, 100 calorie popcorn, pretzel sticks, low fat mozzarella stick
Of course there are exceptions, but I usually consider them a reward. During the week my cardio is kind of low so I try to stay more towards a high protein diet. On the weekends I'm a pretty heavy runner so I eat a lot more carbs on the long run day.
It took me like a couple of years of being anal retentive and making small changes to eat like this.
I've often thought about Paleo... BUT THE CHEESE!! OH MAN, THE CHEESE! And I love legumes. EDAAAMMAAAMMEEEEEEEE.
Check out the Primal Blueprint and Mark's Daily Apple. It was the only thing that made sense to me after being a vegetarian for 11 years and realizing I needed a new way of going about things. I still eat cheese, but avoid a lot of other dairy. Get away from the legumes for a while and see what happens. Man...that was the biggest eye opener for me after being a bean fiend for years and years. I eat a lot of bacon. I eat a lot of beef. When I'm on the run, a bunless burger (sans ketchup) is a good quick meal. I consume a lot of kale, broccoli, and spinach. Lots of berries. If it's a colorful fruit or veggie, I'll try to work into a meal. I consume a lot of coconut oil and a sh*t ton of real grass fed butter (Kerrygold). And I feel better than I've felt in many, many years.
Paleo isn't halal or kosher. No one's going to get struck down if you have a weak moment. It can be flexible and there's a TON of experimenting within the community. You just need to figure out what works for you. Paleo, primal, ancestral eating, blah, blah, blah. All pretty much the same thing. Do your best to eliminate all grains, steer clear of gluten, care for your insulin, aim for low carb/high fat, and try to stick to real food.
For me, it was like a labyrinth. I just kept searching out and reading and trying to figure out what works for me. A few links...
That guy from the interview is the guy who pushes the products at the end of P90X. A lot of good info. Even as a modern science guy, we eat way more carbs than we use to, so hence the heavy protein diet.

Okay, let me get in on this. Last month I started a weight loss challenge at work. It was $25 and 9 people joined. Most % of fat loss wins and winner takes all.
I started at 240 and I am down to 228. Phase I: I have cut out soda! Went cold turkey on that. I am watching what I eat. More salads and a lot less sugars and sweets. I feel better already and have people already telling me I am looking better. ;D Phase II: Exercises. This is a weakness of mine. I hate to do it, but it is starting, slowly. Phase III: More extreme diet changes. I plan to start this soon. Just did not want to shock the body too much. and I love bread. This phase will cut most breads and pasta and potatoes and rice out. Well, not completely out, but pretty close. I will allow myself one day, Sunday, to have breads, pasta, potatoes, and rice.

AQ! You aren't ranting Great post, and thanks for the tips! What you stated here at the end, is pretty much what I've been trying to do for the past 6 months (Roo food and alcohol excluded ) I'm definitely going to take you up on your suggestions, and check out all the links and vid when I'm not at work. I think that "paleo" is just the hot word right now. It's a good place to START for me since I'm kind of already there, and then like you did, go from there and incorporate my own "rules" etc. For instance, with the exception of meat, I'm eating a LOT of raw foods. I like the thinking of "if you can't hunt or gather it, don't eat it." That's a VERY basic but very specific idea - and easy for me to say to myself as I contemplate driving through the McD's drive through, "Mayo, could those fries be gathered up?" ..."YES! Im getting them!" ..."Did you find the fryer out in the woods, too?" ...."Dammit."

Hahaha! I spent 4 years as a very careful vegetarian. To the extent that I almost cut hard cheese out completely unless I could verify that it wasnt made with animal rennet. After that this wasnt so very hard, but it was a learning process.
((excuse my rant post - I just saw "paleo" and clearly I have opinions))
Not a rant! I loooove Mark even though I disagree with him about some of the very minor details. I prefer primal to paleo because its so much more flexible and its non-dogmatic by its nature. Its really helped me get thru the transition to gluten free without feeling deprived.

Nice work Scrog!! I dunno if you've tried this, but I too always hated exercise but I love my kettlebells. Mostly because I can get a really thorough workout in 30 mins that's not boring, and I don't have to go to the gym. I have short attention span when it comes to workouts.
I still eat cheese, but avoid a lot of other dairy.
I actually don't do much dairy with the exception of sprinkled blue/goat/feta in a salad for fat and flavor and Greek yogurt.
Get away from the legumes for a while and see what happens.
I often pair my salad with a Greek yogurt or edamame when I didn't have time to add any protein to my salad. I try to hard boil some eggs or bake some chicken at the beginning of the week, but you know how life sometimes gets in the way! Do you guys have some good ideas for protein to eat with my salad on these days?
If it's a colorful fruit or veggie, I'll try to work into a meal.
A note on colors of food... After a trip to China a few years back, my mom has had a new viewpoint on her meals. The Chinese try to incorporate all the colors into their meals- including BLACK which is hard to do.
Do your best to eliminate all grains, steer clear of gluten, care for your insulin, aim for low carb/high fat, and try to stick to real food.
This is the track that I've been on the past year more or less. Besides my (numerous) splurge meals, I have cut out most processed foods and starchy foods. Like Mayo, I do a looot of raw vegetables.

bonz, I find eggs are easiest (I boil a full dozen every Sunday and keep them in a bowl in the fridge so I just have to grab em)... but cottage cheese is a decent source of protein. If you can get Friendship brand, its BY FAR the most delicious I've ever had!
Also canned or packet tuna is not terrible. Every once in a while I'll eat canned oysters but they're not for everybody! My dad loves canned salmon...I can't stand it though.

Good posts, doodz.
Easy protein isn't always easy - that's for sure. Pre-prepared meat is still my go to. I'll cook sliders up in big batches, nitrite free hotdogs (Fearless Franks are my fave and widely available), bratwurst/sausages from a company out of Boulder, Applegate Farms lunch meat, and things of that nature. I'm a weirdo, though. Braunschweiger has also found its way back into my life. <3 Also, like mizvalentine, a big fan of hard boiling eggs a dozen or so at a time. When I'm feeling ambitious, I'll do fritattas. Bunch of eggs, meat, veggies, and bake it all off in a cast iron! You can eat it for days - cold, hot, whatever. I try not to burn myself out on eggs, though, because I've done it in the past.
I totally get the hard-boiled egg thing. As mentioned in my previous post, that is something I try to keep around as well. And I do make frittata type things. I throw egg whites and an absurd amount of veggies (sometimes meat) in a Pyrex and bake it. People don't realize how well eggs reheat! I do try to keep packets of tuna in my desk drawer, though I have been out for awhile. That is a good thing to replenish. I keep chicken sausage in my freezer at home at all times, and I guess I could always pull a package of that out when I am low on protein and time. It's so convenient that it's already cooked...
