Are the mio/other water bottle flavor things good for you? Or at least...better than most stuff? I've cut soda out for the most part (once in a while I'll have a mixed drink with some soda at parties or bars) but have kind of replaced it with different types of juice. Some with just as much sugar as Soda. So i'm looking for alternatives (and plain water is great but I need something a bit different for meals and stuff).

It's artificial sweeteners, so it kind of depends on your thoughts on those. It's probably not a good idea to use them for every single glass of water you get, but it's good to switch things up now and again.

I know little to nothing about any of this kind of stuff. I'm like a 27 year old kid who never learned how to take care of himself lol. I need to alter a lot of things in my life in regards to foods/drinks because I'm just clueless and have been stuffing garbage into me for years. Super picky eater and ignorant to health-conscious choices make for a lot of PB&J sandwiches, pizza, and fast food haha.

That's pretty much where I am for the most part. Most everything I know how to make from growing up is not good for you, and I never bothered to try to learn new things when I got older. I have a co-worker who is kind of a health nut, and I keep meaning to get her to give me part of her wealth of knowledge re: cooking but never quite get around to it.

Text me pictures of what you want to eat and I'll tell if you can.

Yea, I mean....I can cook chicken cutlets (fried or grilled) and various pastas/spaghetti but those are all basic things. I'm picky about things even I like (sometimes pizza is good, sometimes it's made in a way that I can't force myself to eat) so trying to eat well has been a challenge for me ontop of being ignorant about things. Also, I have little self control and I don't know how to fix that.
I am annoyed this morning cause I am up a few more pounds. Maybe it's the weekend of poutine and fancy cocktails I just had but I'm still annoyed. I walked around a ton and made sure I did a run at the hotel gym so WTF. I am back to writing down everything that goes in my mouth to see if that helps. Wah.
Weight fluctuates. Don't get annoyed.
You just reminded me why I never weigh myself anymore. I used to be obsessed with the scale and if I worked hard a week and lost 1 pound or gained 5 I'd lose it and binge since "it's not working anyway!" It was an awful cycle that I'm glad to be free of.
I just pay attention to how I feel now. I'll step on the scale one day to see where I am but I have a better peace of mind not worrying so much about that now.

Practice.
I'm not where I'd like but I'm WAY better than I used to be. Imagine trying to change the way you eat while working at a bagel shop. I swear it was like those iced sugar cookies were calling my name. They had this glow around them.....tempting me......pulling me in.....
Sorry.
You just have to start thinking about it. Something that helped me was when I was doing my 'one sweet a week' thing. I could have a sweet, any sweet, BUT I could only eat it once that week. That made me start saying no to a lot of things because "This could be good, but wonder if something better comes along and I can't eat it?" Pretty soon I was pretty good at ignoring that awful nagging.
Another thing that helps is drinking a glass of water before you eat. That way you feel full faster. I had to get over that 'finish everything on your plate' mentality that was cemented in my brain from my parents. If you get a craving do some push ups. Keep it exciting. Eat what you want, just don't binge. You gotta start somewhere. Don't try and be perfect right off the back. It's a life long commitment and slow and steady wins the race.

I think it goes back to the structure thing that jenny was talking about earlier. One of the issues I see myself as having is that I don't improvise well. Over the last week and change, abra and I (mostly her) have done better with prepping the kitchen to have things that I can use to make meals easily. If I didn't have the stuff ready at hand, I would probably just say eff it and make whatever. It also helps to reduce those things you have weaknesses for. It's easy to rationalize that "small" bowl of ice cream if it is already in the freezer. It's harder to rationalize going to the store for ice cream so you can have that bowl of ice cream.

Yea, my issue ends up becoming about a lack of eating because I'll cut out the fast food or junk food and then end up not eating the "good" stuff that I got. Then I have a lack of energy and stuff from not eating as much lol.
I've got a littany of minor issues though. They're all sort of connected. I don't sleep well because I don't use enough energy throughout the day. So I wake up tired and without a good nights sleep and don't eat breakfast....because I don't have enough time ( I slept in since I was tired ) and also I have trouble eating early in the morning. So then I don't have much energy or motivation throughout the day and by the time I get home after work I usually have to do some basic maintenance or work on the computer for some side-work/family help. Then I end up going to sleep too late and rinse and repeat. All while note getting enough "good" stuff in me.
I really, really need a hollywood-style personal trainer. Someone who forces me up, creates my food schedule and makes me stick to it, forces me to work out, and stops me from staying up late browsing the interwebs. I do not have money for this, though, so my first step is getting a physical at my doctor, asking for advice, join a gym (or just start doing more physical stuff after work) and maybe seeing a nutritionist.
Now I need to motivate myself to do that stuff lol

No need for a trainer; we'll hold you accountable, ITM, if you want us to! We're all here to support each other.
Just take baby steps: Cut out all fast food. Find a gym that's reasonably priced and start going (I go to Planet Fitness, $10/month, not sure if there are any in your area but worth checking out). Find a fruit and/or vegetable you like and buy a ton of it. I feel that if you try to make all of these major changes at once, you're more likely to fail because too much change at once can be overwhelming and stressful.
I hear ya itrainmonkeys. I'm a mess because of my work schedule, so I can never get a consistent sleep schedule going. I've been trying out this new thing....so if I close I go to the gym after work. I've been doing it for 3 weeks now and it works wonders. If I open I'm trying to get up early (or just stay up) and hit the gym before work so I won't have to worry about it later (that one still a work in progress.) Try to fit it in somewhere.
You're always going to be tired. That's no excuse. Work out anyway and once you start working out that fades, you feel awesome, then you can TRULY relax afterwards. After work just take a walk around the block before you go into your house. If you have something else to do, go for a run so you can get it done quicker. I try my best to work out before I step foot inside the house because I know once I do it's over.
Do you like almonds? Those things save my life. I'm constantly snacking on them throughout the day. A handful of almonds and an apple are a great snack between meals. Every morning when you wake up drink a glass of water before you do anything else. It took me a while to get into the breakfast thing but now I hate missing it. It's all about training yourself. You're used to a schedule, mix it up. It won't be easy but anything that's worth it usually isn't.

All your comments are pretty much the exact same thing I'm going through. Throw working 3rd shift & school on top of all that and it's hell. But seriously, hearing someone else describe my exact problems is somehow comforting. Especially that will power thing, I've always had terrible will power and have no idea how to change it. I'll do great for a week and then fall off (and stay off) the wagon for a month.
What I've started doing, and seems effective so far, is I've started texting my work friend a picture everything I eat & if I make it to the gym I'll text her a picture of the stats at the end of my work out. If she doesn't get a picture from me she either texts me and reminds me, or gets on me on at work all night about what I ate & why I didn't send it to her. It holds me accountable, because although she's not doing anything (and probably doesn't really care all that much besides not having to hear me complain about how self conscious I am & miserable I feel) I'm still being held accountable for what I am putting in my body. Cutting out soda has been terrible though. Drinking water with my meal just tastes weird.
Yeah, changing the way your brain thinks about food and hunger seems to be a major key no matter what dieting path you take. It only takes a couple weeks before you find yourself in a new "routine" if you can stick it out and not stray from the path for very long.

Definitely been told to try that from a doctor a couple of years ago. Now I need to force myself to wake up early. I'm a terrible morning person lol
itrainmonkeysDave Maynar let's go to school! Last year I changed a ton in my diet and ate foods I NEVER thought that I would have before. As you eat healthier foods, your taste buds adjust and you begin to crave items you may have not eaten growing up. For me, black beans, peaches, sweet potatoes and squash (of all kinds) are so delicious now. I would love to talk to either of you about your own level of comfort in a kitchen and what foods you "will" eat.
Monie I'm throwing you in here too. Sometimes we all just need to find where our first step is, and then keep moving from there. If will power and not knowing what to do/buy/cook is where we need to focus, I think I may be able to help. Just DM me if you all have questions.
Sources: I lost 21 pounds last year, ran 3 5Ks and a 4 mile obstacle race last year, and changed several things in my diet.

Sure thing....I love the support/help. We can make a separate thread, take it to PMs, or just keep things rolling in this one. Whatever works. Other inforoosters (Jho, Druid, Jess) are well aware of my picky eating lol. I'm very open to trying new things (or trying old things but in a new way...prepared differently or maybe just better quality than I was used to).
The food/health thing is just one step of major changes I would like to make in my life. But it's an important one

Don't feel bad. I was like that until I was well into in my 30s and I raised my daughter that way I really had no clue about healthy eating. I started gaining weight then, and realized I needed to change my habits and my daughter worked at a health food store, so she came home with lots of good info and foods. We both now eat pretty healthy and very rarely eat fast food. I've even learned to cook, and that helps with making healthier choices.

Yea the cooking thing is a huge thing for me. I don't know how to cook. I have literally burned ramen noodles before. It's all kinds of bad.

No brand is elite. It's just about finding the best bacteria combo that suits your body. Everyone responds different to certain microbes. Fermented foods are the best food source. Check this article for more info.
