As most of you know, I lost a considerable amount of weight between Roo 13 and this year. I coupled that with actually being active in the two months before Roo this year. I expected a pretty noticeable difference between the two years because of that. I was really blown away by the difference though. Every single part of my weekend was so much easier. When I got back yesterday, I actually unpacked and put up most of my stuff because I felt absolutely fine. I even briefly considered going for a long walk because I felt almost the same as I do on a general basis which is complete 180 from the sedentary pile of goo that I usually am on the Monday after Roo. For anyone thinking on focusing on this next year, I really couldn't suggest it more. It will change your entire festival experience. The only issue I had was my back started hurting me some in the back half of the festival, so I am working on core strengthening to help get around that for next year (and Hopscotch this year).

I'm so happy for you! You look amazing but to also feel great is a pretty huge bonus!

Okay, I have decided, that I'm making changes starting NOW, I got a membership at the local YMCA,went grocery shopping and only shopped in the outside circle of the grocery store, (IE: lots of veggies, fruits, salads, some chicken breasts, even almond milk) I want to bust my ass and drop some weight, tone up and get in better shape than I have been in a LONG time. So any encouragement/recipes/etc that anyone can pass along PLEASE do I need all the help I can get since I'm usually REAL crappy at eating healthy.

Are you on Pinterest? I find a ton of healthy recipes on there and have been pinning them as I find them. I have tried out tons of them, especially the vegetarian ones.

I'm SO glad I started running a couple of months before Bonnaroo! I feel like if I hadn't I would have been even more exhausted than I already was come Sunday, definitely a good thing to do before on top of making sure you're hydrated before you even leave.
I have eaten horribly this week. I mean there is eating salsa and then there is eating an entire jar as a snack. I ate almost an entire package of PB Oreos at work. Stress. PMS. Doing better today but feel like I have to make up for it at the gym now.

Thanks for listening.
I ate some ice cream yesterday and ended up exercising on the porch at sundown to somehow even it out. It's just strange because I avoided Amish Donuts all Roo weekend but caved at Butter Pecan.

i have eaten pretty terribly for a while now. i'm too tired to unpack my dishes yet or go to the grocery store since roo so i've been a real asshole to my body. sorry body, we'll get this back together soon.
^ Same. I've actually been pretty bad on all counts and I'm pretty sure I've gained back most of what I lost I haven't been to the gym since my grandmother died in mid-April. I have been going to the walking track outside a few times a week but it's not consistent.
I plan on forcing myself to get back in to a workout routine this weekend. Wish me luck!

I found two websites (http://myfridgefood.com/ & . Check off all the ingredients you have, and they findrecipes.
i'm re-joining the getting healthy party. i've been sick since monday, probably partly due to living on granola bars and peanut butter sandwiches all weekend. it's been all fruits and veggies since i got home, and i'm getting back into my workouts as soon as i can breathe again. just wanted to hold myself accountable with you guys.

Good luck! You will bounce back quickly but the sooner the better! That's what Josh was always reminding me of when I was feeling nervous about not working out for awhile.
time to get back on the wagon tomorrow. I haven't gained any, loving all the walking and dancing at roo (helps all those boozy calories). however, looking at these pictures from the happiest place on earth I realize how far I have to go. YIKES

I noticed today that my pants are too big again. Good thing I bought cheap ones when I got them last month. Also, I put on a size L t-shirt yesterday and it fit pretty great which is the first time that has been true in a long, long, long time.
On the negative side, I have realized that summer is gonna be bullshit because I have to wear layers in my office because it's a freezer then I start instant sweating when I go outside since it's hot as balls out there. Also, benches and other hard surfaces have really become less fun to sit on now that I have ass bones.

ladies that lift: do y'all do machines or free weights?
since the move, i'm close enough that i can ride my bike to campus and work out w/ gf in the evenings. since the trip is a few miles of good cardio, i'm thinking i should focus my time more on lifting and a little rowing. i'm wondering if machines are ok or if i should venture into the scary man part of the gym where the free weights are.

My understanding is that machines are better if you're old and frail and trying to build muscle. If you are wanting to tone and build muscle, as a normal person with no physical limitations, free weights are better. I'm not an expert though so if someone else more knowledgeable tells you differently, listen to them

Im a man who spends his time in the scary part. I promise its not that scary. Free weights are better than machines for most people (unless you have joint issues or other musculoskeletal injuries). machines limit the movement of the weights, and 'force' your form. Free weights dont, and so they incorporate more muscles. For example, a bench press machine only allows movement in one direction (generally forward and back), and therefore really only works your pecs and tri's. With free weights, your other muscles in your shoulders and back have to stabilize the weight so it only goes one direction (up and down, in this case). Therefore you are using more muscles for the same exercise in free weights vs. Machine. More muscles used means more calories burned, both during the workout and during recovery.
Lifting weights is much much more effective than cardio for reducing fat. Combining them is even better. If you want to start lifting weights, focus on compound lifts, which use lots of muscles. These are bench press, squats, and deadlifts. These use muscles throughout the whole body ( vs say, a bicep curl which focus on one muscle). A whole workout can be based on those three lifts, plus an overhead press (think vetical benchpress). The one advantage to machines is you dont need to worry about form as much, since the machine kinda controls this for you. But free weights >>> machines.

for sure venture into the "scary man part." free yourself from the insecurities that come along with it (guys are prob thinking that you are cool, or they aren't thinking about the fact that you are there at all) and it will reward you with awesome super hot girl muscles in allll the right places haha.
Don't use machines. Unless you're rehabbing an injury or something.
Honestly, don't even use benches. At least not for lying down or sitting. Body weight exercises and compound movements will transform your fitness level better than anything else. Doing shoulder press? Stand up. If the weight is too heavy or you can't keep proper form while doing them, it's a sign that you're using too much weight.
You really don't even need a gym. Find a playground and make that part of your running loop. Run a mile or half-mile to the playground as a warm up, then get a good stretch in. Get on the monkey bars or whatever and do 3 sets of dead hang pull ups, 3 sets of toes-to-bar, 3 sets of chin ups, 3 sets of knees-to-elbows. Work in a pushup set, and then be on the way for your run.
