do you guys and gals have any suggestions for a post-gym breakfast? i will usually have kashi with fruit, nature valley bars with fruit, or recently i've been just grabbing odwalla/naked type smoothies (mostly because my blender is leaking and driving me nuts). i'm a vegetarian, and a pretty picky one at that. i just don't know if what i'm eating right after the gym is even doing anything for me.
Cottage cheese has tons of protein and tastes great with some fruit mixed in.
2nd day of officially being 15lbs down since November! Before November, I had spent a year dropping 12lbs. I still have almost 30lbs before I'm pre-kid weight. Never ever ever ever wait until your kid is 4 to try and lose the "baby weight" lol
Hi friends. I would like to lose weight AND get fit before Bonnaroo! I'm tired of being fat and this year ALOT is motivating me to start getting with the program.
Great job!!!! I am so happy for you!! (I need to get on the wagon too.. badly) I just had a flash back to 2012 (2013?) when I practically had to drag you to get you to walk to the arch instead of cabbing it
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Now that the side effects of my new medication have leveled out, I'm back on track with my diet. I finally coughed up the bucks for a gym membership here (Alaska Club is really the only decent place in my town, but $175 a month family membership...ouch!), but I've noticed that after intense cardio like HIIT and sprint intervals that my nose goes into a full meltdown. For two or three hours after the workout I have sneezing fits that cause nose bleeds, followed by a constant drip. I've read that post nasal drip is common after cardio, and I only do cardio workouts twice a week--because I'm all about those weights yo!--but has anybody had any experience with this? How can I stop it? Will it eventually quit happening?

Maybe I'm just allergic to cardio *shrugs* haha!
I recently switched medications, too. Zoloft was making gain weight like crazy - I'd gained 40+ pounds since I started it. I've always been a pretty slim guy, so that really bothered me. I switched, and am trying to follow a mostly vegan diet with the occasional every now and then. The hard part for me is exercising. I just can't seem to find anything that I enjoy - I used to skateboard all the time but I can't do that anymore...risk of injury and all that. I've just found the whole process of doing repetitive exercises boring. I'd rather exercise by doing something.

Paxil was my enemy a couple years ago as far as weight gain went. I packed on 40lbs in three months on that stuff, it had to go! Thankfully they switched me to Lexapro and I lost it all plus a few in a matter of months. My issue this time around was not eating at all. I was put on Wellbutrin XR and it killed my appetite completely, so instead of the 80/20 clean diet I was doing, I was forced to make some less than healthy choices on a regular basis just to reach enough calories to sustain my energy. I've seen some major improvement in the past two weeks, appetite is back and the workouts are making me feel hunger again. If I can just stop this faucet nose of mine I'll be in good shape!

Oh, I was put on Wellbutrin too! It's completely killed my appetite as well. Zoloft made just want to eat everything in sight, health be damned. Now at least with my appetite curbed, I can make good decisions when it comes to food.
I want to lose five pounds! It's the last 5 lbs before I'm my "dream goal weight" and my body doesn't want to be there. I COULD lose it pretty easily if I ate super clean and did some extra lifting but I don't seem to be able to sustain losing it when I return to my maintenance workouts.
Drink a gallon of water everyday! I set out 8 standard 16.9 oz bottles everyday and label the caps 1-8 by noon I like to have 5 gone! Please recycle your bottles!

Or don't buy and waste 8 water bottles a day, but rather use refillable water bottles???
Sorry, don't want to nag on you for your first post, but wasting water bottles is a pet peeve of mine. Welcome to the board, Mrs. Starr! I do like your idea of having them all set up and labeled. It's great to actually be able to see your daily goal.

No eating after 6 pm!
Pick up the banana and put down the Doritos!
you must go to bed at an ungodly early hour if you don't eat after 6. I'm rarely even home from work or whatever errands I'm doing afterward by 6.

I've been doing it so when I eat dinner before 6pm and I make sure to get some gym time in and then after gym snack it. Usually by the time I've worked out and stopped for a quick after gym snack... I can be awake a few more hours.

I don't mean you have to buy 8 water bottles you can use any bottles I reuse them each day they are simply labeled 1-8 on the cap with a sharpie I don't recommend buying 8 bottles for everyday of the month! I am sorry for the confusion!

I go to bed around 11. Not eating after 6 isn't for everyone.

Actually, the whole "don't eat before bed" thing is a myth.
Also, for weight loss, banana's are very high in sugar, and really should be eaten sparingly as well.
It's amazing how much/how quickly you can lose weight/get in better shape if you stop drinking, even if just for a little while. I haven't had a drink for the past week and a half, but the difference is already noticable. Also, I have a buddy who came to the realization recently that he is an alcoholic and stopped drinking. He lost probably around 30 pounds in a few months and looked like a totally different person. I think, especially as you get older, when you drink it tends to just sit in your belly; I guess there's a reason they call it a beer gut.

It depends enormously on what you eat. Ideally, you should start and end your day with protein, and avoid dairy, processed carbs, and wheat several hours before bed. No eating after 6pm is an absurd rule - and I'm not just saying that because anything before 5pm is really lunch. This sends your body into starvation mode, where it burns minimal fat and will latch onto whatever you consume next. It's far healthier to eat several small meals throughout the day instead of a big meal at 5pm and then fasting until breakfast.
Not all sugar is created equal, despite whatever the corn syrup industry tells you. A bag of caramels hits you far more than its equivalent in fruit. Yes. fruit has sugar; it also has fibre that slows the absorption of the sugar, potassium that keeps you full, and a host of other goodies in there. When you deny yourself these allowances, you make yourself far more likely to binge on something worse later on. Turning fruit into juice destroys that fibre, which spikes your blood-sugar and wreaks more havoc on your gut.
Are you hungry but can't work out what you want? It's probably water. Drink it before, during, and after meals to avoid overeating, and to aid digestion. Speaking of which, your body can only process about a cup of water at a time. Slugging back that 20 oz. bottle in one go will add to your water weight - which is much easier to get off than the donut weight, but it's still weight. Even better than recycling your water bottles? Buying a reusable bottle to enjoy municipal's finest. This isn't some iffy bacterial water from a third world nation - you will survive. Promise.

Yep, cutting back from 1-2 beers a night to 1-2 beers a week was key for me. Most people don't pay nearly enough attention to liquid calories when trying to lose weight, but it's basically drinkable bread.

I was just talking about this yesterday. I have lost so much weight in the past year, but if I could actually cut out alcohol I'd be set. I bet I could lose another 15-20 lbs easily if I cut out soda and alcohol.... I just really like being drunk though.
However, I don't drink daily. I usually drink once, maybe twice a week, but when I do I'm basically binge drinking.

This was a lighthearted post. Take it or leave it. I don't need "schooled".
A banana is always a healthier option than Doritos! Fact. I didn't say eat 5 bananas! To stop eating early in the evening will decrease your caloric intake your fat intake your sugar intake if you are someone who generally snacks in the evenings. Fact. Decreasing those things can potentially lead to a healthier lifestyle and weight loss.

I didn't realize we had sooo many experts here I would have kept my mouth shut. My tips were simple and have worked for me obviously they aren't for everyone.

Soda was a big problem for me. Soda and caffeine. I was drinking about a liter of Mt. Dew or Mellow yellow a day for the last couple of years (3x 20oz for $3 at the gas station!) but It's getting close to a year since I quit. I had to go to the dentist for 3 fillings one day and my mouth was so numb it wouldn't operate sufficiently to consume my morning dose on the way into work after the visit so I decided then and there to quit. After that I'd only have root beer and cream soda for rum drinks and the occasional coke at work and tho I'd sometimes kill a 2-liter on the weekends, especially while gaming. I quit that too and now it's been almost 2 months since I've had any cokes or sodas at all, tho imo ginger beer for a dark and stormy (or 3) doesn't count. I don't drink a lot of beers but lately when I have I've tried to alternate or substitute a mich. ultra to feel better about it.
I gave up Diet Coke about a year ago. Now I just have to drink my whiskey straight, much healthier.
But honestly, cutting back on caffeine was terrible for me. Now I just do a cup of black coffee in the morning and I'm all set.
I have a hard time quitting pop, too. I can quit for a little bit (currently on day 3) but I always go back. I also drink a lot of coffee and tea...I can't quit caffeine altogether because I get crazy bad headaches. But pop is just so good, haha. My dentist STRONGLY disagrees, damnit.

Most of your advice wasn't awful - I just think 6pm is crazy extreme, unless you're going to bed at like 8:30. That also means I'd be squeezing all my meals into a 9-hour window, which actually isn't great to do. If I'm eating dinner before 7:30 or 8 at the earliest, it's only because I skipped lunch. Don't eat any non-whole foods within a few hours of bedtime is more sound advice.
I'm no expert, but I took some personal training sessions for much of last year that focused heavily on nutrition. It was eye-opening to realise all the little ways I was sabotaging myself without even realising it. I know most people loathe the scale, but weighing myself weekly, tracking the results, and keeping a rough idea of what I had consumed was absolutely critical to getting in shape.
Painting all weekend has made me realize that I really really need to get back to the gym. My hamstrings hurt so bad on Saturday night, I could hardly move. And it would also be nice if my jeans fit again.
I know I keep posting in here and then not doing anything, but honestly, once we get moved in two weeks, I'm going back to the gym. I'm going to ask you guys to harass me about it to ensure that I actually go. OK?

Painting is great exercise!!
And we all do that at some point. I haven't posted for that very reason. Although since I got my Fitbit, I've lost 5lbs and I haven't even started exercising yet - that is just from watching my portions and calories etc. Another 11 lbs to go....
Ahh the Fitbit. I've been debating getting one.. it's just a big expense if I don't end up using it. I'd love to get one and then challenge you to a battle, dreamingtree!

The before 6pm rule is actually a bad tip, and isn't very healthy, so I wanted to make sure people understood that.
Banana's are obviously healthier than Doritos. If you eat Doritos too often though, substituting them with bananas isn't going to work.

Wow, someone provides the thread with actual scientific information, and you condescend him? Sooooooo sorry, we should have kept our mouths shut and let you spread horrible information in a thread meant for helping people... good call. You could have used this information to help yourself, but instead, you bitch and moan when someone corrects you? Enjoy starvation mode.
