Painting all weekend has made me realize that I really really need to get back to the gym. My hamstrings hurt so bad on Saturday night, I could hardly move. And it would also be nice if my jeans fit again.
I know I keep posting in here and then not doing anything, but honestly, once we get moved in two weeks, I'm going back to the gym. I'm going to ask you guys to harass me about it to ensure that I actually go. OK?
I find Facebook groups/month long challenges that I join to keep me on track. You're supposed to post on how your day was overall. Did you work out? Did you eat healthy? Some groups have gift cards and prizes you can win if that's motivation. It helps me because every time I sign on Facebook I have an alert that others have posted in the group so if I skipped out on my workout I feel lazy seeing others got theirs in. It's like a gentle workout harassment group, works great for me.
Ahh the Fitbit. I've been debating getting one.. it's just a big expense if I don't end up using it. I'd love to get one and then challenge you to a battle, dreamingtree!
I have an up bracelet but everyone with their Fitbit makes me want to switch over. Mostly for the challenge groups. The Up bracelet is also kinda bulky and sometimes I get angry at it in my sleep and toss it against the wall. I think it's time for something smaller.
This was a lighthearted post. Take it or leave it. I don't need "schooled".
A banana is always a healthier option than Doritos! Fact. I didn't say eat 5 bananas! To stop eating early in the evening will decrease your caloric intake your fat intake your sugar intake if you are someone who generally snacks in the evenings. Fact. Decreasing those things can potentially lead to a healthier lifestyle and weight loss.
The before 6pm rule is actually a bad tip, and isn't very healthy, so I wanted to make sure people understood that.
Banana's are obviously healthier than Doritos. If you eat Doritos too often though, substituting them with bananas isn't going to work.
I didn't realize we had sooo many experts here I would have kept my mouth shut. My tips were simple and have worked for me obviously they aren't for everyone.
Wow, someone provides the thread with actual scientific information, and you condescend him? Sooooooo sorry, we should have kept our mouths shut and let you spread horrible information in a thread meant for helping people... good call. You could have used this information to help yourself, but instead, you bitch and moan when someone corrects you? Enjoy starvation mode.

I'm not sure Fitbit is smaller than that actually (unless you get the clip on which isn't as accurate and easily lost)?? I could be wrong. Which actually reminds me of one of my biggest worries: I hate bulky bracelets. Anytime I wear one, I end up tearing it off mid-day.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I had a Fitbit and never really used it, because I'd always forget to bring it with me (it has since been re-gifted... sorry Bonz).
However, I love the crap outta the health app on the iPhone. Today I did ~8,500 steps, 6.5k, 22 flights of stairs, and 2 hours of heavy lifting while cleaning out my garage, all on a crazy humid, 31°C (~90°F) day... schvitzin' over here. I earned that post-lunch beer, dang it!

If I was a guy and could basically guarantee pockets, I would try an app, but my phone is rarely on me. If I were to track, it would have to be a separate item.
(DAMN YOU FOR GIVING IT AWAY, JACK! Just kidding hehe) Sounds like a good (and hot) day!

Maybe I'll have to give the iPhone app another try. I didn't like it the first time I tried it. I didn't realize the little Fitbit wasn't as accurate as the bracelet. The braclet looks thinner than my UP so maybe i won't throw it against the wall in my sleep. Since the iPhone app is free maybe I'll have to try that first.
Well now that I think about it, only one person told me the bands were more accurate than the other one. I am not sure where the info came from, so I can not verify its accuracy.

I've done a couple of the 4 week DietBet's. It's always nice to get a bit of cash for something you are trying to do anyway.
I did it once and failed. The problem being that I started it when I was doing badly. If I was already on a roll and I started it... I totally would kicked its butt

Actually, the whole "don't eat before bed" thing is a myth.
Also, for weight loss, banana's are very high in sugar, and really should be eaten sparingly as well.
It depends enormously on what you eat. Ideally, you should start and end your day with protein, and avoid dairy, processed carbs, and wheat several hours before bed. No eating after 6pm is an absurd rule - and I'm not just saying that because anything before 5pm is really lunch. This sends your body into starvation mode, where it burns minimal fat and will latch onto whatever you consume next. It's far healthier to eat several small meals throughout the day instead of a big meal at 5pm and then fasting until breakfast.
It takes a long ass time to enter "starvation mode," and most people have a really poor understanding of what it is. Unless you are an endurance athlete, you have about 24 hours of glycogen stores in your liver (and a little in your muscles as well) that you can be converted to glucose for energy. even after the glycogen stores are used, then the liver will break down fatty acids and produce ketone bodies for energy (this is what those people on "keto" diets are aiming for, and why they cut out glucose sources in their diet like carbs). fatty acids have a higher glucose/energy storage potential than protein and are therefore prioritized in the "starvation" metabolism. the body only burns "minimal fat" when their is a ready source of glucose, or glycogen (carbs). once fatty acid stores begin being depleted can no longer provide the energy the body needs (mostly the brain, tbh. fatty acids can be directly used by many organs in the body for energy, but they cannot cross the blood brain barrier) then the body begins breaking down proteins and amino acids (muscle) to supplement the ketone bodies in providing energy to the brain in the form of glucose. There are multiple studies of starvation and its effects on people and metabolic rate. you will see decreases in basal metabolic rate and non exercise thermogenesis, but these reductions are the body adapting to an extremely low caloric intake or extremly high caloric output (eg: anorexics or obsessive spin classers) for an extended period of time. this is also an example of a positive feedback loop: less body mass/skeltal muscle, lower metabolic needs. so even if you are in this "starvation mode" your body will definitely be burning fat. basically for lenergy the body uses:
1. glucose (carbs) 2. glycogen (stored form of glucose) 3. fatty acids (convereted to glucose) 4. fatty acids + ketones 5. proteins (broken down to glucose) + ketones 6. you dead.
depending on exercise levels, diet (keto/low carb, etc) and body depends on how long each of these stages last. but starvation mode takes a long time to reach, and usually people are just cycling through the first 2 or 3 stages.
as far as meal frequency and timing, it is a myth that many small meals are better than fewer large meals from a purely weight-loss perspective. in some psychology studies though, they have found that either approach can lead to over eating in non-disciplined people. with many meals, people tend to eat more calories throughut the day unless they are diligently counting their calories. on the other side, people who ate fewer larger meals would tend to overeat at their last meal of they day because of the accumulation of hunger. so in that regard, it really is dependent on the person and their self control. as far as going longer periods of time without eating (eg: intermittent fasting) it has actually been shown to have some neurological benefits in the prevention of disease and neuronal health.

You can have mine. PM me your address. I bought it half price for a work challenge. Wore it for that, but once it was over, I completely lost interest in having it on and kept forgetting to charge it, so I quit wearing it.

AHHHH really?!?! THANK YOU! I have it in my Amazon shopping cart but then started searching for panda and other Roo gear and haven't clicked buy. WOOHOO!

Killer info. I know I used Starvation in it's slang sense. There are a lot of conflicting reports on what starvation mode really is and what it does. I wish I had my old computer, because I had a recent study done on there that specifically went into what you eat before bed. It basically stated that eating the right food before bed actually helps you lose weight, and that a little fuel for the metabolism while you rest actually helps you break down nutrients more quickly and efficiently. This is especially true for those who exercise. It also mentioned that you won't process your first meal of the next day very well either as your body tries to adjust to the fact that you aren't actually fasting. Everything you stated though is completely true and is great information that I'm far too lazy/busy to post.

Haha do it!! I had a 10 year award at work and got to choose my award, so I chose it. I don't think i would have spent the money in though because I am too cheap
I am worried about that happening. I've already decided I am taping it on for Bonnaroo, because there is no way I could make it through that weekend and not lose it

If I get a fitbit, in theory could I "friend" any of you and participate in challenges? I've been using my built-in iPhone pedometer and shooting for 10,000 steps a day. You guys sound like you're having a lot of fun with this fitbit business and it's making me intrigued!

Are they really worth it? What's a good one?
Yes you make an account and can add friends via email. You can challenge and cheer each other etc. I kind of feel like there are multiple apps out there to do everything a Fitbit does, but this is all in one package.
It is working for me, because it is really helping me move more and be accountable for everything I am putting in my body (My Fitness Pal does that part better though I think...).
I had the nike fuelband (had to be replaced several times.....) but switched to the garmin vivofit. I like it bc it runs on watch batteries and doesn't have to be plugged in every few days. It just goes. And it's super accurate. No more masturbating 4 miles like on the nike fuelband. WAIT WHAT!
I tried the iPhone app yesterday. I had my phone in my pocket at work all day and it shows I did 11,000ish. So I guess it still gives me an idea of my total steps.

Sigh. So I went out on lunch to go to the grocery store. I had big plans of doing tons of cooking tonight and wanted to get a head start on some of the shopping. ROCKEEDDDDDDD that discount produce section. Three stuffed bags full of vegetables (90% of it discounted) for $21!! Yeah! Get on track, Bonnie!
Then I got asked to go to happy hour. I said yes. Sigh. No cooking and more booze for me. I can't say no... I neeeeeed to get back on track (and I am drinking way too much).

I hate getting asked to go drinking! I have pub trivia on Thursdays with a group and I have so much damn fun, I can never say 'no' when the group gets together.
I feel your pain. Have fun tonight and eat your fresh produce tomorrow.
