Yea, I had fun last year but agree that the people pretty much sucked. I was in a really talkie spot for Radiohead, too, and I caught sh*t for smoking at that show from some German chick. I also caught attitude from some pr*ck at Wilco as I was trying to find a spot. I've never encountered so many rude people at a festival.
On the flip side, it IS really pretty there in Grant Park, with all the architecture and the skyline and everything. The fireworks during Fake Plastic Trees was a beautiful.
Oh yes, and the party ends at 10, which is a bummer, too.

i had good and bad experiences with the crowd. during the black keys some guys shared some of their really nice corn. during radiohead it was talky but only for a song or two where i was standing. some guy did yelled "honestly bro, honestly" while i was making my way back from the bathroom during radiohead and it's not like my spot was even that close. i wasn't pushing through the crowd i was politely making my way back. i wanted to sock em...seemed like a total weiner. also while waiting for rage this nice guy was really thirsty but didn't want to lose his spot. so he offered to trade corn for my friends water. the shittiest part is definitely the 10pm stop time...however there are a bunch of free/cheap shows each night all over the city after the fest ends. plus air conditioning, shower, and a comfortable hotel is pretty nice too. bonnaroo is still my fav. fest
Every spot at Radiohead @ Lolla last year was "talky." I moved about six times and couldn't get away from it. I went to seven mainstream festivals last year (SXSW, Jazz Fest, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Lolla, Virgin and ACL) and Lolla had, by far, the most unfriendly crowd. The food and beer lines were pretty time consuming, too. That said, I really love Chicago and I would consider Lolla again if the lineup was stellar.
I've been to lollapalooza the past 3 years and it's always been amazing. However, I do have to agree somewhat on the crowd being lame, it took me awhile to find some real radiohead fans last year where I know they wouldn't be talking up a storm, still the best show I have ever seen though. RATM- easily the most intense show of my life. Half the show I wasn't even on my feet because people were so packed together and I was getting lifted. One of the best parts were the after parties on the subways after Grant Park was closed for the night..we got pretty wild on those things.
45 min sets for most, 1.5 hour sets for big names.
Main stages a mile apart.
Horrible, nightmarish atmosphere.
It is what you make of it, you go in with a bad attitude you will find ways to think it's shitty. The walk between mains stages took maybe 10 minutes max and usually I met some interesting people along the way. Can't say I'll be back anytime soon though unless it's a ridiculous lineup because Chicago=$$$ EXPENSIVE!
lolla wasn't all that bad yes the people suck most of the time, but they keep to themselves try to map out what you for sure want to see, cause walking around to find something takes up almost the whole time and then before you know it, its time to get a good spot for the headliner of your choosing also like most people say there is usually some craziness going on after 10
idk....I've been to quite a few diff festies in the last few few years....camping/non camping....indie/rock/jambase/jazz/small/big....you name it...and by FAR Lolly last year had the MOST STELLAR lineup of ANY festie....an AWESOME setting (Grant Park is incredible! Truly beautiful and worth the hassle to get into and to fight the crowds....plenty of shade and yeah the lines are crappy for food and beer/wine but not much worse than most other big festies) I LOVE Chicago and the nightlife and aftershows! And great hotel acccomodations if a bit $$ tho not as bad as Jazz Fest....BUT...honestly...the crowds.....The WORST music festie crowds I have EVER encounterd! Rude.....disrespectful of both artists AND other concert attendees...totally self absorbed in "their own experience" and getting what "they wanted" out of it...with NO regard to ANYONE else....it was just like thier own private social club.....and no one else mattered....and THAT was the worst part. We ALL paid the same price to get in...and yet some people took TOTAL advantage of it and treated it like their own private festie to lord over and trample eveyone else...THAT'S what made it miserable for the rest of us......totally inconsiderate. That is why I will think twice about it before I go back....

I wont think twice about it. No way in hell I'd ever go back to Lollapalooza
There's not a thing worth remembering When tomorrow can bring someone new Get used to the thought You can't be what you're not Life has already got plans for you
I like Ben Harper (although I haven't heard him with Relentless 7), but there's no way he's big enough to headline Lolla. What festivals are billing him as a headliner?
Gah. He headlined two years ago with the innocent criminals. Attending that show was one of the biggest musical regrets of my life because opposite him was Daft Punk. But yeah, he headlined.
Ive been seriously contemplating lolly this year due to the fact that ill be in Chi for phish on the following Tuesday....is it really that bad?
No. You're on a camping festival forum, where people just aren't open to the thought of going home to a nice warm bed and taking a shower every night and morning. Lolla was the highlight of my year the past two years, and I couldn't have been sadder when I found out I wasn't going this year. GO! If you go in with preconceptions tho, yes, it will bring you down. It's just like if you say you're not going to be able to do something, then you probably won't achieve it. I may get smited for this, but I haven't experienced Roo yet, and Lolla is the only festival i've been to, but some of my best concert memories are from there. I mean, seriously, Rage Against the motherquacking Machine. Best show of my life.

YES!! That's what I'm talking about. That was amazing. To hear everyone yelling LOLLA and being part of that, that was so fun.

That's pretty unfair and totally untrue! I go to LOTS of other "non" camping hotel festies each year (VooDoo and Jazz Fest just to name two...just got BACK from Jazz Fest as a matter of fact....) and I am NOT at ALL opposed to a nice comfy bed and shower along with my music. BUT....not ALL festies of ANY type are created equal...the vibe at EACH one is totally diff...even Jazz Fest and VooDoo, which are both in New Orleans have totally different vibes....cause they attrack totally different audiences. Lolla has it's audience which at least last year which is the ONLY year I have gone was NOT like any other music festie audience I have every experienced even though I have/had seen LOTS of those acts at other festies so I KNOW it wasn't the fanbase of the acts....
And yes the RATM show was INCREDIBLE!! But so was the show they did at VooDoo in 2007! You really should go to some more festies outside of Lolly...I think you might understand where some of us are coming from and what we are talking about.....

is lolla doing just single days, like last year? i really wanna see tool outside the 10000 suck ass days tour (not saying tool sucks ass....just that tour)
TOOL!!! And a lot of the good bands from 'Roo's lineup. Last year was my first Lolla and Bonnaroo, and I hope to get to see both again this year! It was awesome to wear my 'Roo shirt to Lolla and have people yell "BonnarOOOOO!!!" when they saw me. ^_^

I don't know, man. I didn't have a problem with anyone. No one was especially rude to me, everyone I met was pretty friendly. I met just as many elitists with their noses stuck in the air as I did at 'Roo, (not very many, but a few). I think it's worth it for the setting. It was awesome going from the country fest to the big city fest last year.
Main problem I had with Lolla was the expense. The vendors were about the same as any fest, but you can't park on the campgrounds like at 'Roo in Chicago. The parking was ridiculous and it was annoying getting back to Indianapolis. It was awesome walking through the streets at night with the huge crowd after they shut down every night, though. Like Night of the Living Dead, only we were all drunk and exhausted from moshing. Hah.
Bonnaroo down...Lolla ahead. The schedule was kind to me but I'm going to have to abandon my girlfriend for Tool as she really wants to see Beasties and couldn't make it to Bonnaroo this year. There's gotta be an Animal Collective aftershow this year right? Right?

I might go to Lolla, but Bonnaroo will always have my heart. The crowd are total dicks. For example: I was watch RHCP in 06 and this drunk ass guy pissed all over the back of my leg and all over some girl. Worst end to a festival ever.
