Actually I'd say the art installations and the lights drive up the cost a little. One week after Roth my bf ran into the guy who was in charge of the lighting for the forest. He gave #'s as to how much it all cost. I can't remember the exact amount but it was effing crazy.

sorry to change topic... but k2boarder, where are the Avetts playing on 6/16? That's my birthday, and DMB is playing in my hometown... not a DMB fan, but I quacking love the Avetts!
back on topic... it hasn't been 24 hours yet, and I'm already tired of reading people's complaints about either festival on both boards.
2/5- Papadosio 3/3- MUSE 3/12- John Mayer 3/19- The Werks 3/31- Passion Pit 4/18- Ben Folds 4/20- Against Me! 6/10- Bonnaroo 6/30- Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey
There is really no reason to be snarky about, both are great fests for different reasons. I mean in order for them to get the breadth of lineup Bonnaroo has, they would also have to sell 80,000 tickets. Trust once that many people show up, the "vibe" will have changed there as well. As it stands though Rothbury is still the best of the Regional festivals. Bonnaroo however is easily this year the best of the national festivals.

I'd agree with that. I'm much more a fan of praising each festival, rather than ripping them apart.

hey, i'm going to both, and totally stoked for both. i'm just tired of comparing the two...there's no reason for it. they are NOT the same kind of festival, and they're NOT trying to be. that's all i'm saying. and you can say bonnaroo is the "best" this year all you want...doesn't make it true for everyone. that's where opinions come in. personally, roth is the best this year IN MY OPINION.
Rothbury = Langerado a couple years ago. It's a nice mid to large scale music festival that is copying Bonnaroo's model on a smaller scale. Hopefully they'll learn from Langerado and not entirely abandon their format.
But really, the only reason this whole which lineup is better thing even began is because a few people on these boards viewed Metallica and Kanye as the ultimate betrayals and made it their mission to proclaim the gospel of Rothbury to all who would listen.
^^^^ This
I'm really surprised Keith/Dude hasn't popped his weaselly little head up to preach the gospel of the crunchy heady vibes and tell us all once again how Roo should be called CustieFest 09 and that anything that isn't jam sucks. I figured he'd be all over this one.
hes steered clear of the main boards, apparently lurking and/or posting in the threads almost no one sees. i thought i saw someone quoted your post also and replied along the lines of hes going to Roo and not Roth this year despite Roth being in his home state, and asked what does this say of the lineup? cant find the post to quote though....
anyways who cares what it says of the lineup, what it says to me is that all the bullshit he was spewing this time last year was unwarranted and hypocritical.

Eh that really doesn't say much about this years line up because he didn't go to last years Rothbury either. Something @ Nelson Ledges competes with Roth.

Well opinion is one thing. The facts are Roth will have about 50% of the attendance, and 50% of the total number of acts, that is what makes the difference between a regional and national level festival. There is no reason to argue opinions on here, but we can certainly discuss the facts. Personally I am much more impressed with Bonnaroo's lineup but I am huge Phish fan, and that biases me I am sure. But really price considered I still think I am gonna hit up Grateful fest rather than Rothbury, SCI makes it a close thing though.

roth being smaller is exactly one of the reasons i find it so appealing. it felt SO GOOD last year at roo to only have the what...65k? as opposed to the normal 80k. there was a definite difference in how you were able to move around and get to the stages. throw on top of that the fact that rothbury has better weather, and more appealing night-life(sherwood, more electronic stuff), and it makes it the best in the country for me.
but, i'm also a deadhead, so i supposed that's another thing that biases me in the end, i'll be raging with you at phish, and it'd be awesome to be raging with you at the dead as well

For the record, I indeed was unaware about the lake and whatnot being taken away this year when I mentioned the venue, so thanks for mentioning that! Had no idea... ???
But seriously, that forest looks sick... and with secret stages/shows going on randomly? Hell, I'd pay a little bit extra for the possibility of that alone.
I don't know if it justifies a higher price or not, cause I haven't been there. But I'm sure it's fun while you're there regardless. It's not like anybody that goes there is gonna have a bad time.
^Ok considering the Bonnaroo crap that gets passed around on several other boards that was pretty lighthearted. Not defending the Rothbury blows comments or anything, but that was actually kind of funny.

well, ftr, i spend just as much time defending bonnaroo on the infobury board as i have defending rothbury on this board. i love them both, and am of the mindset that a festival is what you make of it.

when it comes down to it, these 2 festivals have good enough lineups that people on the internets feel the need to justify their reasons not to go. That generally comes off in the form of angst, hate, and general snobbery and elitism about which festival is better.
For me, I could care less. I'm about done with this whole festival thing as is. Bonnaroo 2009 may be my last camp-out style festival for a while. I have had a great ride at every Roo and many of the festivals that have risen up and gone their ways in this past decade, but I feel like the ride is sort of thinning out and becoming severely played out. All the festivals are starting to look the same, and they are just rehashing each others sh*t. I still like the music some of them present, but at some point it's like "fuck, how many jambands can you fit on to one bill and have it look the same every time." It'd be different, I suppose, if these jambands were better bands and could hold these fests weight year in and year out. But they can't, and with Phish back, the noobs who have only gone to festivals so far, are about to see what they have been missing out on, and it really may spell a retraction of this whole jam-festival scene.

Time will tell.
A soothsayer you are Gouge. I tend to agree with this. I think you're already seeing it retract. There will always be good fests for those that want them though.

Heres my beef with Rothbury the promoters im sure are paying big bucks to score Dylan with that kinda money they could have gone with a younger act like My Morning Jacket which would make the lineup more exciting while still maintaining the jamband roots.

well, for someone like you who has been "on the ride" for years now, i can understand you feel this way. but i can't help the year i was born, and was not exposed to the festival scene until about 2004, and didn't attend my first one until 2005. to you it may have gone downhill, and i'm sorry for that. but for me, i'm enjoying the hell out of it still. i'm going to roo and roth, and plan on enjoying both of them to the fullest. i realize it's easy to get heated when someone attacks something that's important to you, and i apologize if i was a little catty.
in the end, i'd rather just celebrate what it is, than criticize what it's not.

I think that they are trying to attract some people that know the name of a popular act, like Dylan, and expose them to the festival... instead of saving money and getting MMJ instead of Dylan, because they already have a solid jam band line up, so they can already attract those fans. They want more people to come to the festival and establish a bigger fan base, IMO.
Just type in "rothbury" in google and look at the first page. They list Dylan and have him in a couple titles before they even mention the Dead.
