^^^ That'll be a fun trip you'll never forget. I made it to Yellowstone in '04 and can't wait to go back one of these days. But Yellowstone and two fests on one trip will really be special. :-
i'm incredibly excited. any tips about yellowstone? i know it's got to be incredibly vast and will be hard to see everything in one day's time, so what should we mark as "must-see"? also I think rocky mountain national park might be in the cards as well. probably won't get to spend much time there, but still... super pumped.

Hey Jeff. Vast doesn't even begin to describe it. It's like the size of a small state. One day will be tough to see much there(it would take forever to see everything), but I'll point you in a couple directions that you could take.
If you drive in from the N.E. entrance to the park you can set up camp in an awesome little(23 sites, I think) campground called SloughCreek. From here it's not that far, 30 minutes or so to MammothHotSprings. Once you set up you could shoot over to the HotSprings, maybe hit TowerFalls and then end your night watching wolves in the LamarValley. 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. are the prime wolf-watching hours.
There is an amazing spot about a mile from SloughCreek CG where you can watch wolves. They are there every night. It's basically guaranteed that you will see some. Bring binoculars though. They are a safe distance from where you'll be standing, a couple hundred yards or so. One time while watching through a sighting scope I had 7 or 8 wolves, a bighorn sheep, a bull elk, a couple hundred bison, at least 50 pronghorn antelope and a grizzly with 3 cubs in my frame. They don't call it the Serengetti of NorthAmerica for nothing.
With just one day you'll have to concetrate on one small area of the park, like the LamarValley/Mammoth area or you could go down to the canyon area or the geyser basins. I'll write back later and detail one of those other areas for you. Coming in from the south would be sweet too, you'll have to go past GrandTeton N.P. This is much smaller and it's very easy to see alot in one day there. Even just driving by the Tetons is amazing. You can view the peaks right from car.
wow you rock thanks so much for all that advice. we'll be coming from the southeast because i believe the plan is to check out Rocky Mountain National park beforehand. looks like we're entering Wyoming in the southeast corner and going straight up northwest to the park.
Glad to be a help. I'll shoot off a proper run-down of the Canyon/NorrisGeyserBasin part of the park a little later.
Sounds like you got one a heck of a trip planned. I'm heading out west to SCI at Horning's this summer and I wish I had the time to do a little sight-seeing too. Unfortunately I don't. I'm jealous.

More Yellowstone info as promised:
I figure you'll be coming into the park from the south, using Rt. 287. This will take you past the Tetons before entering Yellowstone 23 miles later. You're going to be there at a great time of year. Most of the parks visitors come through in the summer months as winter can last through mid-May and beyond up there. I don't think you'll have much of a problem finding a campsite at that time of year.
With just one day I would try to hit NorrisGeyserBasin and the Canyon area. A good place to camp is the NorrisCampground. It's on the west side of the park which will make for a quick getaway the next morning. Plus, by camping there, you're real close to the geyser basin. The best time to visit this attraction is early morning. It is otherworldly. Maybe you hit that up on your way out in the early morning. One hour will give you a good amount of time to really see the whole basin.
The three seperate times I visited Yellowstone we always got up super-early in the morning to avoid seeing the most popular things with thousands of other people. By getting up and out by 5:30 a.m. we continually saw ultra-popular sites, like LowerFalls and Norris, with noone else around. You're not going to have that problem being there so early in the season. Your biggest problem will be seeing as much as you can in one day in a park that's bigger than RhodeIsland and Delaware combined.
So check out that map link I sent you. Stick to the lower loop. You don't want to waste your whole day driving around in the car. Try to get close to the park the night before too so as to avoid wasting time driving.
Good luck! Any specific questions I can help with, don't hesitate to ask. I love talking about that place. You'll know why soon enough. ;D ;D ;D
thank you so much! i can't tell you how much i appreciate all this information. i guess i'll show you my appreciation by throwing karma your way every time i see your name.

I'm glad to be of service. You're gonna love it there. One day is hardly enough time, one month wouldn't be enough, but it should be enough to call you back.
I'll send you a PM you when I have a little more time to really detail a couple things that I think you'll be able to fit in.

I'm really excited by this year's Sasquatch lineup. I may get shot for admitting this but I'm actually more excited by the Sasquatch lineup than the Bonnaroo lineup.

Hey guys, so I just got online to buy my ticket today, only to be disappointed by seeing them sold out. The two friends I'm going with already have theirs, so I really, really need a ticket. If anyone bought a ticket and can't go anymore, I'd be willing to buy it for a reasonable price. Please, PLEASE let me know if anything is available.

Sound sweet. We are heading to Leavenworth WA. after the fest. Got married after the fest last year and spent our honeymoon in that town. If you like German themed villages, you should check it out. Otherwise, see you at Wildhorse. Look for the Green H2 with Minnesota plates. Oh and 28 days till Sasquatch.
