GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Local business owner Shaul Zislin received permission from the City Council on Monday night to put on a $3 million, three-day music festival at the public beach in May, and said he plans to unveil much of the lineup Jan. 4.
Zislin -- proprietor of The Hangout, an 18,000-square-foot restaurant at the terminus of Ala. 59, as well as the Surf Style chain -- has said that he anticipates spending as much as $2 million on bands to fill the festival's four stages. He will also reimburse the taxpayers for any expenses Gulf Shores incurs hosting the event.
The Hangout Music Festival is scheduled for May 14-16, and paid attendance will be capped, as a condition of the organizers' special events permit, at 35,000 each night. By awarding the permit, organizers are able to run shows on the larger of two Gulf-front stages until 11 p.m., an hour later than would normally be allowed under city noise laws. But they still must receive permission from state environmental regulators to put the stages on the sand, and cordon off a large swath of beach for five days.
Zislin cited ongoing negotiations in declining to reveal any of the acts that might play the festival, but said that the headliners will be household names.
"We're shooting for the stars," he said Monday. "We want the best that are available in the business to come here."
A.J. Niland of Mobile's HUKA Entertainment, one of several experienced firms Zislin has enlisted, said organizers are planning to put on a surfside equivalent to the Rothbury Festival and Coachella, both well-known music festivals.
The Rothbury Festival, held on Lake Michigan's eastern shore in July, has featured performers ranging from big names Bob Dylan and the Dave Matthews Band to more cutting-edge acts, such as Of Montreal and Modest Mouse. Coachella, the three-day southern California event, was headlined last April by Paul McCartney, The Cure and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Zislin said that his team is assembling the lineup with an eye toward appealing to a wide range of tastes, to draw concertgoers from well beyond the Gulf Coast.
City officials said they are excited about the promise of such a large event during an otherwise down time of year, between spring break and Memorial Day. But they were cautious, without seeing how the first year went, not to promise that it would become an annual event, as organizers hope.
"We're going to have to gauge the impact on the community, and I don't just mean the financial impact, but the impact on our citizens not being able to access the beach, and the traffic and the crowds, and all of that," Mayor Robert Craft said. "I have no doubt it will have a positive business impact."
Right now there are rumors of Kings of Leon, Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, and of course, the Buffett.

Ok - that is an impressive resume of his
I'd like to say that just one thing on his resume stood out - but it all stands out
Assistant project manager for Jam Cruise The project manager for Echo Accounting Management for Bonnaroo Operations Adminsitrator for Gathering of the Vibes Venue Manager for Rothbury Project Manager for Camp Bisco 5, 6, 7 and 8 Production Manager for Bear Creek
Sounds like he should know what he is doing - will be interesting to see if he pulls it off.
Their facebook fan page said on either Tuesday or Wednesday that the lineup announcement would be coming in two weeks. So I guess it will be out around the 19th?

Oh I have no patience - we are trying to decide between this (depending on the line up) and Jazzfest and now Jazzfest has Simon & Garfunkel (who I would really really love to see)

I kinda feel like the lineup delay is a bad sign....I'm not seeing any buzz coming because of the lack of announcements. There hasn't even been an official announcement for the announcement--just an update telling us "two more weeks", which is here. Kind of REALLY annoying.

The only thing I've been getting from this is a cluster fuck.... Seems like dude had extremely high hopes and now he's seeing how the fest business really works... Maybe he'll pull something awesome off but I'll be surprised after all the run arounds these folks have been doing.
I'm giving up hope that they will ever announce a lineup. Too many good fests to compete with they need to get a lineup out so they can start selling tickets.

Hi there!
I belong to a message board full of music enthusiasts who attend Bonnaroo each year. Needless to say, we were all excited to hear of the possibility of a new festival and we were very excited when we learned that Michael Allegretto had been brought on board as he has an extensive resume and seems to know what he is doing. All of the news we had heard made it sound like this was a done deal and was going to be a great thing.
However, we are disheartened that there has not been a lineup announcment yet. Jazzfest has announced; Waka has announced; Coachella has announced; Bonnaroo will announce on 2/2/2010.
Is there going to be a Hangout Music Festival?
There is speculation that nothing will come of it...
The one thing you have got to do is announce your lineup before bonnaroo and (if it is happening) rothbury. Both festivals tend to bring it. You won't be able to match them on lineup, but if it is goo enough you can get a good crowd by being cheaper.
