This is soooo much like Waynestock lmao
None of the artists are gonna show up and then the Black Crowes show up in a limo and walk out there... and then it turns into the biggest fest in history after they play!
If you had to pick Roo, Allgood, or Hangout, where would you go? Factor in logistics if you're coming from Knoxville.
I grew up worshipping Rock and Roll like a religion. I know its shortcomings and strengths but have loved it unconditionally all the same since I was eight-years old. I ran away and joined the circus and honestly, I'm still as obsessed as I was as a boy. I'm not a kid anymore but I still remember how it felt and it doesn't really feel all that different to me now.

Hangout sounds great but the music ends to early for me, I will be at AllGood.
I'm doing all three! Going to be a summer to remember
If I really had to pick just one... I don't know if I could honestly. Music ending early or not this seems too good to pass up, but I've only heard amazing things about All Good... and I know Roo is going to be awesome regardless of who plays... I don't know!

Bonnaroo is the safest bet, since I've been there the last three years. I've seen and read so much about Allgood that it looks like a safe bet, too. Allgood seems like a bit of an adventure. I know the WV guy said it was somewhat close to Morgantown, WV...but the entire mountainous region of WV might as well be Mars to me. I've even been to Beckley! Admittingly, I'm afraid I might freak out up there lmao. I know exactly where Bonnaroo is and know how everything is going to be (for the most part). But ... For years I've wanted a music fest to be on the beach! I never thought it would work out. At best, I figured it would be in Cali (I live in East TN). Theoretically, this will be perfect. Great lineup, a very accessible, affordable, and beautiful beach! Unfortunatley, this is first year of this thing. I'm afraid the cops will be horrible. If I can get a decent clean room then this could be great, though. Girl Talk ending before 11pm? Sounds lame, but some of these sets could be classic while the sun is going down. No one going down for Hangout Fest has any idea what they're getting into. You think I'm crazy, but I'm right about that. As long as the cops aren't trying to arrest every other person they see then everything should be alot of fun down there. I'm not going without ALOT of money, though.

as far as "extra-curricular activities," im not goin there with the same mindset as roo, sure security may be beefed up....gonna have to do my tokin/other/etc in the condo, or discreetly for the most part, whatever..........and girl talk befor 11 will still be cool, also not the same as roo, but still way cool....his show/sets are awesome and a ton o' fun.....its gonna be special, the whole weekend...a vacation to remember...i hope. No, I Know. It's on the Beach!
Yeah...it won't be as loose as All Good or Roo cause..hello! It's pretty much on a Public Beach! But...if you are otherwise discreet and don't get obnoxious and belligerent and just blatantly flaunt anything...you should be cool. The cops down there aren't like militia or anything....they just want to keep it a fairly family friendly environment and safe.....so just be discreet and safe and don't act crazy and you'll be fine!

if i had to pick one, i'd go with All Good. mostly because camping fests are the bomb, and it's a smaller fest with better weather than Roo. that, and you'll enjoy having exposed yourself to a new festival. Rothbury was the only other major camping fest i'd been to, and it was amazing!
i'm doing both All Good and The Hangout, and if Roo wasn't a 17hr drive, i might consider doing it too. but in the end, go to whichever lineup will make you happiest

I will say that last year at Orange Beach at the WSP show, cops were pulling people off the floor and arresting them. Hundreds of arrests. No idea what it will be like at Hangout, but there was little tolerance for anything except beer drinking last time I saw a show in the area.

yeah, city fests can be a toss up. ACL in Austin is pretty lax about the green, but a lot of that is because Austin in general is lax about it. don't know what gulf shores is like.
Post by GratefulHippie on Feb 28, 2010 14:18:19 GMT -5
well, that's a little disheartening. then again, as is the case most of the time, if you're not being stupid you shouldn't have to worry. and luckily the condos where some of this group is staying are within walking distance in case there's a need to be indoors.
Post by nitetimeritetime on Feb 28, 2010 15:01:41 GMT -5
Yeah, if you keep your head about you, you should be fine. And as long as you can leave and reenter, there's always walks down the beach if the place seems sketchy.

yeah, im not worried....just cautiously aware. Those beach cops dont wanna go thru the hassle of nabbin some music fans for "petty" things. Just dont disrespect them by lighting up right in front of them, wait til they turn around......by the way, condo is .5mile from the hangout....an easy spot to get in the right frame of mind then hit the venue...in case you want to...and you know you will!

I was worried about the popo situation. I've only been to one other city fest and that was Bumbershoot but it was more lax than Roo. There was zero security walking in other than showing your ticket. Open vending during the shows. People were old school vending where they actually carried their wares out in the open so you could see. But it was on the west coast. I've never been to Alabama but I can't imagine that it is any more strict than Indiana. You can pretty much do anything at Deer Creek as long as you're discreet. In fact, you can do anything pretty much anywhere as long as you're discreet. Just don't act a fool.
Wolfaroo had a good idea about taking a bike down there. I assume there will be somewhere to chain up a bike. It'd be good for trips back to his condo for a smoke, drink, poop, etc... It's close but I'd hate to miss too much music.

Don't want to keep hammering the point, but this is the kind of attitude that got lots of people arrested last time I was in the area. They absolutely DID want to nab some music fans for petty things, which is why I saw dozens of people yanked off the floor of an amphitheatre that holds thousands, even though they were being as discreet as you can be when doing what they were doing.
I'm just saying be careful, and don't go in expecting to do anything except drink. Maybe it will be different at Hangout. But maybe it won't. Just trust me when I say that AL cops don't treat that offense as something petty. They won't write a ticket; they will take you to jail.
Questionablesanity has it right. A bike would be a great idea for trips back to the condo.

im def bringing a bike....the h/out site claims to have bike lock-up areas at the venue, so ima gonna have my wheels out there........ahhh, questionable just reminded me how nice its gonna be to poop inside/ on a real toilet.....oh joy!

you think there will be all the "goodies" available, like at other fests and whatnot?......i hoping to get my mitts on some festie wares while im there...but if it aint kosher than i may try to get my stuff ahead o' time.

i hear ya.....i left roo early in 08 to see the FLIPS at city stages fest birmingham, AL. I didnt see much going on as far as thats concerned.....but that was literally in the city...i imagine this will be slightly different in that respect....not quite a fest on the streets of a city, but also not in the middle of no-where, free from hassle and rules. Tough to gauge how it will be.....i doubt there will be any central "shakedown" area...oh well....BYODs it is!

Music does end kind of early but I think the venue is open til 2am so the party will go on. It'll be interesting to see how it's all going to work out. If this guy really has that much experience with all of those other fests, I think it'll be amazing.

Agreed. You have to remember...this is a redneck Beach Bum town...they don't call it the Redneck Riviera for nothing!
You can be a little bit bad...just don't piss people off by being waaay obvious, throwing in their faces and being a**holes about it. Be a bit more discreet than if you were on private property where anything goes....byowhatever just to make sure (tho there will be stuff there if you know where to look) and mind your manners and leave the 'Tude at home! It IS the beach! This is land of Jimmy Buffet for heaven's sake! You think it can REALLY be that bad?
And as for the Warf...totally diff sitch. That is more of an upscale totally concert venue trying to create a name for itself as an high class/high end year round big name place . Orange Beach is trying to REALLY upscale to drive the prices on property et all through the roof. I think the Hangout Festie will be MUCH harder to be hard on policing and expect the flat out Police presence to be lower and private security to be more prevalent. And usually THAT is much more lenient. They KNOW from prior festivals like the Mullet Festie and Shrimp festie how much MONEY they bring in for stuff like this. ANd there is ALWAYS the FloraBama for apres Festie Fun! ;D
Haahaaha! Maybe...depends on what's more important....partying or the music. If you are good with toning down the partying till after festie hours THEN hit it hard core at night in places like the FloraBama (and plenty of other really cool night spots) AND get the beach atmosphere all at the same time...then it's right up your alley.
If you HAVE to have the big time party action WITH the music all the time, then yeah. A public venue festie just isn't your thing. You need something secluded, on private property where the security can be more lenient and don't have as many "rules" to uphold and no once can get that much in trouble over NOT doing their job. Just different strokes dude! That's the great thing about festies. They are NOT one size fits all...and I truly hope we never lose so many to where it comes down to that!
