I was talking to Wolfaroo about this last night. Even if there is oil in the water, can we still not enhoy the beach, the good weather (hopefully), and great music? Sure, I'd like to swim in the ocean, but it won't ruin my weekend if I don't get to. I don't like swimming all that much. Like Jade said, there'll be plenty of pools around.

^That's true, but if there's oil in the water near shore then there's likely to be oil on the beach as well. If that happens to be the case, cleanup, not a music festival, will be top priority.
The reports are that any oil that reaches south Alabama or the Panhandle of Florida will just be residue. Most experts say that because of the distance of the rig that the oil will naturally dispearse by the time it would reach these areas. Plus the rough seas the last 2 days have helped dispearse it faster. They expect to lower the concrete dome onto the leaking pipe in about 6 days.
Here's an article from this morning. "The entire eastern portion of the sheen seems to have disappeared," said Phil Woods of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. "It's breaking down rapidly. The solids that remain are emulsified. And while they are going to be hard to deal with, we're not going to have black beaches."

What exactly are you trying to say here, that they will shut down the festival to clean 100 yards of beach? No. Or are you saying that the beaches won't be enjoyable because of oil being all over them? The water level only comes up so far, there's still lots of beach that won't be affected by oil or residue. I'm enjoying myself no matter what!
^I was simply speculating that if significant amounts of oil washed ashore in the area that the festival might be in jeopardy due to more pressing concerns of crisis management. Good news is that it sounds like it's not going to be a problem.

dead sea turtles are washing up on the shores of Mississippi. they don't know if it's directly related to the oil spill yet, but they are saying the numbers are double what is normal for the season

They are indeed trying to schedule another headliner to replace the Lips!!
"Shaul Zislin, the developer who first pitched the festival to Gulf Shores officials, said Monday that organizers plan to book another headliner in the next few days, rather than shuffling groups that are already on the bill. The challenge, he said, is finding a similarly distinctive act."
""It's easy to throw another name in there," Zislin said. But he wants to land "a good alternative" that Flaming Lips fans can appreciate. Negotiations are under way, and he said he hopes to announce a new act within the next two or three days, he said."

Wish but there's no way that will happen. It'll be someone who plays smaller venues like the Lips. I can't wait to hear who they come up with and I hope it's not a big disappointment.

Seriously. If anything it should be an even more awesome band than the Lips. I would gladly settle for Ween. I don't mind seeing them three times in one summer. Not at all.

Meh, I'm indifferent to the Roots. I saw them open for 311 once and they didn't impress me. But the crowd was really lame so that probably played a bigger part of it.
Lips>Roots for sure imo. But at least I won't be forced to watch Jakob Dylan.
Anyone heard his new record? It's getting good reviews.

I've only ever really listened to one Roots album much, and the same is true of the Lips actually, but I was just thinking yesterday that the festivals I'm attending this summer seem pretty devoid of hip hop acts so I'm kinda stoked for that reason if nothing else.

i can get down with the Roots. i'm a huge hip-hop fan, and both time i've seen the roots have been nothing short of a raging party. they can really get a crowd going. still completely bummed about the Lips because i still have yet to see them live, but i'm not bummed about the replacement.
