its probably not KoL themselves so much as the people (looking at you dyjosu) who try to make a mediocre band out to be something amazing that makes it so irritating.
the best song on aha shake heartbreak doesnt touch the worse song on in_rainbows, and they dont sound like aha shake heartbreak anymore. radiohead continues to redefine themselves in a positive way, KoL has managed to go from a unique and interesting sound to putting out two garbage songs that repeat the same phrase over and over, yet somehow either of them get more radio play than ANYTHING else out there.
now i wouldnt even feel the need to nuts on them so hard if some people werent acting like they are god's gift to rock and roll. they are an insult to it, and it especially pissed me off being a MMJ fan. talk about a huge gap in talent, and for whatever reason, popularity.
it's also irritating when people act like Radiohead is God's gift to music even when Thom Yorke sounds like a prepubescent girl struggling to grasp the english language when he sings.
Radiohead is not my favorite band, and before in rainbows i had never heard anything from them other than Karma Police and Creep, so no i dont think they are gods gift to music (that was lennon). i just know good music when i hear it, hence why i liked aha shake heartbreak and also why i think the next logical step in KoL career is to breakup.
i dont even think you like KoL anymore, i just think you are trying to stir shit up.

1) Bob Dylan is God's gift to music (even Lennon thought so).
2) Youth and Young Manhood and Aha made the sundae that is KoL. Because of the Times was the cherry on top. Only by the Night was the lame advertisement for the sundae. It doesn't mean the sundae is bad. It just means lots of people dig lame stuff so they had to do something a little lame to get some recognition. Just because the Geico caveman commercials are super lame and annoying doesn't mean Geico has bad insurance.
3) They've already learned their lesson and have said they are never making pop again. These guys just toured for a year and a half straight promoting their album and are already starting to record another album in March. They aren't breaking up and they should never break up because they love it too much.
4) My musical views are bound to stir nuts up whether I want to or not.

Your views? As far as I can tell you have only one.
"KOL is the best band ever and anyone who does not agree with me sucks"
Also while they were friendly I have never heard of Lennon just paying a huge tribute to Dylan or anything.

dyjosu - i'll save you time and headaches......just let them win. I'm a fan of KOL too.....I agree totally with your "sundae" metaphor.
but you're not going to change anyone's mind about KOL. Either they (the people here on inforoo who are anti-KOL) have given them a chance and dislike them or won't even give them a listen. There's no fighting it. I like KOL but agree with most they shouldn't be unopposed headliner. You're better off just letting them hate. you'll be happier if you do

1) Not my view at all. My view on KoL is anyone who thinks that 60 year old Beastie Boys are more talented than KoL in their prime is out of their mind.
2) No. John Lennon did not build a shrine to Bob Dylan
But Lennon was jealous of Dylan's lyrical talent before they ever met and that drove him to try to write more meaningful things.
"At that time John had told Aronowitz he wanted to meet Dylan, but only "on his own terms", when John had become his "ego equal"."

The Geico and sundae metaphors are awful. The difference between lame advertisements and the product =/= 1/4 and the most recently made product by a band. Both the product of Geico's insurance and the sundae are supposedly good in your scenario thereby negating the dumb advertisement, but no matter how you want to frame it Only By The Night is still 1/4th of Kings of Leon's output and the most fresh. You're resorting to metaphors and insults of other bands to try and hide the fact that Kings of Leon's musical compositions aren't good for popular music, their music creates no tension that makes pop rock good, and their lyrics are ridiculous at times.
Also I'd love some statement from the band members that they don't recognize and won't play the ridiculous "advertisement" album. I doubt that they are pulling a Nirvana and purposely screwing up their most famous song(s) because they hate the press they got.
Except John Lennon repeatedly mocked Dylan later in his life and wrote in a completely different style of songwriting.
I don't have a problem with anybody thinking Bob Dylan is god's gift to music. He's a great musician. I'm just pretty sure Lennon didn't really hold him in that kind of esteem.

You're right......it's just sad that most people judge the band based only on 1/4th of their output. The people that say they like the older stuff would be happy to know that they *gasp* still play the older stuff and it's still good.
It's weird......some people act like they wrote "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" with the thought 'wow this is going to make us huge' or 'this is our plan.....we'll make these songs and then be popular and won't have to do anything else' . Certain songs catch on with wide groups of people. Franti & Spearhead's song "Say Hey" has gotten really popular and gotten him recognition but it's not because he planned it that way.
I think you can roughly break people's reactions to KoL into four camps: 1) Hardcore fans. 2) New Fans. 3) They were better in the day fans. 4) People who always thought they were posers who suck at life.

I don't know enough about the band to know how they form their setlists, but usually a new album consists of at least 1/3 of a band's setlist on the resulting tour. But still I find KOL old stuff, and by that I mean Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak, to be mediocre 6.0 work. Only By The Night is just awful though. Honestly based on just the music I would be fine with them going in a tent on a day, but with the ridiculous hype and popularity that is surrounding them I really wouldn't book them at all.
They aren't a band that's musically great. They aren't on top of their game or genre. They aren't a band that is great live, based on reviews by people that aren't super fans. And they are going to command probably anywhere from 2-6 on the lineup. Does that sound like a band that I want at Bonnaroo?

I agree with this. I was just responding to the other guy. I find it laughable that people think that any band is sitting in their studio petting their cat and belting an evil laugh saying "Yes, Yes, We have them now! Now we are free to do whatever we want artistically."

The band is the product and OBTN was meant to bring attention to the product.
"I just had this melody and I didn't know what to say. Then one day I just sang "this sex is on fire" and I laughed. I thought it was terrible, but the rest of the band were like, 'it's good, it's got a hook'. I was like 'fuck off!' but I ended up writing it" - Caleb Followill
In their recent interview in SPIN magazine they talk about how they really hate Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. Caleb said something along the lines of "If I have to hear one more cover of that song (Use Somebody) I'm gonna rip my fucking throat out." He also talked about how Use Somebody started as some kind of a joke built off of a show's theme song.
I remember at a festival in Europe (Reading I think) Caleb said something along the lines of "I know you're sick of Kings of Leon. We're sick of them too." Which was definitely built off his frustration that the crowd wasn't feeling anything except for Sex on Fire and Use Somebody.
I don't know if they will drop those two songs from their sets or not. I don't think they hate the "press" nearly as much as they hate people focusing on TWO songs in their collection of 4 albums.

Can't this apply to any band though?
I suppose it can, but it's a grouping based specifically on KoL. The last grouping is kind of specific to major label groups who try to act indie though.

Yea my second part of the post wasn't directed to you. Just a general thought about how people judge popular bands based on a few songs.
And I guess I can agree with your first response......I'm a fan of KOL but even their first 2 albums aren't on my favorite albums list. I know they aren't expert guitarists and don't expect such. I also wouldn't call them horrible or boring, but that's just me.
also the same issue that Spin named them "band of the year"
just sayin
what are you "just sayin" ?
the magazine named them band of the year......so of course there will be an interview/article section. what does that have to do with the quotes that dyjosu posted?

The Reading festival quote from Wikipedia, he sounds like a classy dude
Kings of Leon caused minor controversy at the 2009 Reading Festival when Caleb Followill tried to get the crowd going by asking "I thought this was supposed to be the loudest crowd in the world?" Picking up on a perceived hostility towards the band, he announced "we know you're sick of Kings of Leon, so for all those who don't give a fuck about us, I understand. But we've worked fucking hard to get here. So anyone that has anything to say to us, fuck you. We're the goddamn Kings of Leon." The band later smashed their guitars in anger and made rude gestures before leaving the stage.[31]. Nathan Followill further criticized the Reading crowd on his twitter page, declaring "Zero love for the kings. I know it was cold but holy shit, y'all were frozen. I can only hope Leeds is in better form.".[32] At the Leeds Festival Caleb again bad-mouthed Reading while complimenting the Leeds crowd declaring "We're only five songs in and you've blown Reading to hell", while complimenting UK crowds in general stating "It was the UK that made us feel like we could take on the world."[33]

has nothing particularly to do w/ anything and is meant to imply nothing...is why i said "just sayin" Just figured some might not have known that.

yea....like no other artists have ever been hostile/rude towards a crowd. Didn't Roger Waters spit on a fan and call them names?
You're just looking for more reasons to dislike them jess. We get it. They're not your thing. But what happened there doesn't sound out of the ordinary for any rock group. At some point, things will go bad.
^Actually I was refuting dyjosu's claim that his behavior at the Reading festival exemplifies his how he does not like the new tunes either. When all it apparently shows is that he is a first class jerkstore.
