Okay, so, I'm familiar with a number of artists here and like enough to make me go. I know the higher profile names, but what are some standouts to you guys?
I'm just looking to research the lineup a bit more.
Best Coast - Surf lo-fi rock. Has a good first album out. Bear in Heaven - Psychedelic electronic music. Should be great live. Atlas Sound - Shoegazing. Side project of Bradford Cox of Deerhunter Bowerbirds - Great indie folk band Washed Out - Chillwave electronica. Only have an EP by them, but it is good. Future Islands - This band is so much fun live. Must see. EAR PWR - this band isn't really good, more just a fun live show Fucked Up - Pretty good hardcore band, but is at the same time as Atlas Sound Woods - Great freak-folk band Deakin - Don't know much about his solo stuff, but is a member of Animal Collective Raekwon - Just Awesome
Collections of Colonies of Bees - great experimental/post-rock Double Dagger - Anthemic punk. Sometimes Springsteen-ish. Sometimes post-punk-ish Akron/Family - Folk-rock that's all over the place, but always great Ben Frost - Think a black metal band making ambient/experimental and you're in the ballpark. Really dark. Really excellent. The act I'm most looking forward to seeing Spider Bags - Killer bar-rock/punk band. Friends with Titus Andronicus and have a similar sound Active Child - Spacey, haunting, gorgeous electro-pop Mountains - Slow moving, beautiful post-rock/ambient Schooner - Excellent excellent band. Sometimes folk-rock, sometimes indie rock. Killer songwriting and one of my favorite vocalists. Killer hooks. Always great. (www.myspace.com/schooner) Whatever Brains - Lo-fi, snotty punk that's also really catchy Harvey Milk - Experimental sludge metal. It rules Ryan Gustafson - Great local. Beatles-sounding folk-rock Richard Buckner - One of the single most underrated acts of the past 10 years. Killer songwriter with some brutal songs. RIYL Damien Jurado Lonnie Walker - Like Bob Dylan if he had more punk in him. Seen them many times. Always great. Pontiak - These guys rule. Half their stuff is haunting folk-rock. Half is psychedelic blooze-metal NOMO - Killer Afrobeat-influenced band. Caught them at Bonnaroo a couple years back and it was a really fun show The ExMonkeys- Pals of mine who make bombastic, sometimes experimental electro-rock (www.myspace.com/theexmonkeys) Juan Huevos - Another pal who does killer electro-rap (www.myspace.com/juanhuevos) Megafaun - Experimental folk-rock that will blow your mind. One of the best live bands in NC Kylesa - Very heavy stoner metal in the vein of Mastodon. Two drummers

I'm no fan of the city fest set up but this line up is such a smooth mix of everything I dig... plus North Carolina is just absolutely gorgeous. Hmmm.....

Pumped for this. Work has been really busy preparing for this weekend.
To answer your question, noage, probably most excited for Best Coast tomorrow and Public Enemy for the fest. Heard rumors that Terminator X, who is from and may or may not still live in Durham (45 mins from Raleigh), will be performing with them, which he never does any more (he quit music in 2003, according to Wiki).

Conversation with a friend last night:
Me: "Get over to Akron/Family if you can...quacking killer" Friend: "I'm selling Panda Bear weed. Dunno how or why." Me: "Hahaha, woah...Panda Bear's weed or weed called Panda Bear?" Friend: "Weed to Panda Bear" Me: "Holy Leno...Raleigh is officially official."

Doing Love Language>No Age>PE>NOMO>Bear in Heaven>Dungen/Tortoise/Washed Out tonight (Tortoise/Dungen/Washed Out all conflict with each other, but I'll probably catch some of all three).
Glad I bought the VIP wristband because skipping lines has been CRUCIAL the first two days. Felt bad when I jumped the line for Best Coast Thursday night. Line was SUPER long, but nobody was in the VIP line, so my girlfriend and I got right in with no wait. Felt bad, but that's what I shelled out the extra money for. Totally worth it. I think the VIP wristband will allow me to see some of Dungen, Tortoise, AND Washed Out tonight. Stoked.
Half of Broken Social Scene got in line right behind me outside Sharon van Etten (who, by the way, was AMAZING--I highly recommend both her record and live performance, especially the song "Love More") last night, so I got to shake their hands. That was cool. Everything I saw was just incredible last night. The War onDrugs were a lot jammier than I thought in the absolute best way possible. They put on one of the best shows I've ever seen in a small club.
So fucking good. The played Lincoln theater, which is a pretty intimate setting. Glad you suggested I check them out or I might have been at another venue.
They are adding 2 more venues this year. I'm really interested to see who they book to play Fletcher Opera Theater. On the website it says "This September, a visionary Paris-based composer, a Chapel Hill folk band, a seminal trio of Australian improvisers, an experimental Brooklyn siren and many more will take to Fletcher’s stage." I'm guessing that the Chapel Hill folk band is Lost In The Trees but I'm not sure about the others. I think/hope the experimental Brooklyn siren could be Glasser or Julianna Barwick.
Zola Jesus and Glasser are L.A.-based. However, someone else suggested Julianna Barwick, who would be great.
Someone on last.fm figured that the Australian group were probably The Necks and not, unfortunately, Dirty Three. They also said they heard Earth and Mt. Eerie. I have heard Dodos.
Some larger local acts they didn't book last year that could be possibilities for this year: The Mountain Goats, The Old Ceremony, Chatham County Line, Carolina Chocolate Drops
Keeping a running tab of rumors/probabilities on the first post in the thread

Yeah, I realized I was way off about Zola Jesus right after I posted that. Honestly, "experimental Brooklyn siren" is the vaguest hint they gave. There are tons of possibilities.
I had never heard of The Necks, but after reading their wiki page, they do seem like a much more likely candidate than the Dirty Three because of their focus on improvisation. Oh well, at least they sound interesting.
